UK - PLASA 2017 proved a lively, energetic and vibey hub for meeting the UK’s lighting and visual designer community and other creatives commented Robe UK’s MD Mick Hannaford, words echoed by the moving light manufacturer’s CEO Josef Valchar, stating, “We have enjoyed seeing many individuals, companies and organisations from all over the UK as well as several from Europe – the quality of the visitors and the networking opportunities were really excellent this year!”
The annual trade show was again staged at the Olympia exhibition centre in west London over three days, with Robe’s large, high-impact stand right at the heart of the domed ceiling hall, attracting massive attention with a specular dance / light performance live show.
This year, the product focus was on Robe’s just launched MegaPointe multi-functional moving light.
Another stunning booth design complete with elaborate draping and dressing continued the theme of theatrical spaces around the world in which to showcase Robe’s diverse range of products.
The stand design and the live show’s direction and choreography was conceived entirely by Robe’s own creative team led by Nathan Wan and Andy Webb. The show starred Jake Stephens - a talented freestyle dancer who has auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent - together with 42 x MegaPointes.

UK - On its first ever public outing at PLASA 2017, Le Mark’s new PAL Label Challenge was attempted by some of the shows strongest visitors and exhibitors, but remained completely undefeated.
“The PAL Label Challenge is so much fun. It gets really competitive between friends and colleagues but so far, no one has made it budge.” Said Le Mark’s marketing & strategy manager, Mark Gibbons.
What’s the PAL Label Challenge? Le Mark wanted an entertaining way to demonstrate the raw strength of the adhesive they use in selected PAL Road Case Labels. With the help of with 5 Star Cases, they designed a set of flight case plates, fitted with heavy duty handles and stuck them together using the very same super-strength foam adhesive used in their foam-backed PAL Labels. The challenge is to see if anyone has the strength to pull them apart.

UK - Shure UK announced SSE Audio as its 2017 UK Rental Partner of the Year during the PLASA Show at London's Olympia. The award was given to SSE Audio's group managing director John Penn and co-founder Heather Penn at the Shure PLASA stand during the second day at the show, by Shure UK's Pro Audio Group manager Tuomo Tolonen and area sales manager Stuart Moots.
"Shure's excellent relationship with SSE Audio spans several decades, during which time they've been a highly valued rental partner for us - but this past year, we've worked especially closely together with them," noted Tuomo Tolonen following the handing over of the award.

UK - Sundown Festival returned to Norfolk Showground for the seventh year this September and Hawthorn once again supplied lighting for the main stage. Attracting a 40,000 crowd, the three-day festival was the biggest ever and featured Craig David, Pendulum, Rag’n’Bone Man and You Me At Six.
Hawthorn supplied the Main Stage flown lighting system, including rigging, drapes, FOH control systems and followspots. On top of this, the company also provided a custom designed lighting package for Saturday’s headline act Craig David and another for Pendulum, who brought the festival to a spectacular close on the Sunday night.
Hawthorn’s head of concert touring, Mick Freer, led the project and consulted with the lighting designers for this year’s headline and supporting acts to produce a design that brought together all their precise requirements.
“The LDs provided a festival/touring plot in their rider and from this I picked out the key fixtures they wanted; in this case these were Martin Mac Viper Profile, Clay Paky Sharpy and Atomic Strobes” said Freer. “Once I’d pinpointed these, I then incorporated them into my design for the flown rig. The key with this was to ensure that any floor lighting packages the acts were touring with could seamlessly merge together with the flown rig to achieve the best possible visual effect for both artists and festival goers.’’

Europe - Depeche Mode’s Global Spirit Tour sees the band crossing the globe in support of Spirit, their 14th studio album. During the European leg alone, the boys will play to 1.5m fans in 32 cities in 21 countries. And at each venue a pair of Hippotizer Boreal Media Servers will provide the technology required to manage the show’s video playback.
SRae Productions, the full-service design and production company owned by Sooner Routhier and Robert Long, takes charge of the tour lighting direction for Anton Corbijn’s production design. Commenting on the Global Spirit Tour, Sooner described some of the duties she and her team demand of the Hippotizer gear: “For Depeche Mode, the Hippotizer is a playback machine. We used the system for IMAG effects on the rear wall. We also used the colour block system in some way, shape or form. We trace the screens to give them the look of being lined in modern, neon-esk lines. We also were able to use each LED tile as a lighting fixture, taking a bit of pressure off the content team.”
Key to the success of this world tour’s video & lighting show is Hippotizer, Green Hippo’s award-winning proprietary software, including its ZooKeeper user interface. South Africa - Visiting South Africa, and in fact the African continent for the very first time, Oliver Ronshausen, service manager from MA Lighting, presented an elaborate three-day Advanced Service Training session to the DWR Distribution technical and support team.
Oliver joined MA in 1994, and with only a four-year interruption in between, really is part of the family. “I love the MA team, the product, being around the users and distributors and making friends in the industry,” said Oliver who in August last year started pushing service training to new and more structured level. “The training is to educate and enable people in the field to do repairs but the important thing, really, is maintenance. The feeling I have is that many MA owners don’t realize that they have to maintain their consoles in order to operate shows with a reliable product.”
The complex course went right down to component level and included fault-finding, quick fixes, replacing parts, PC boards, screens and a wealth of other information.
“We have learnt a great deal and our sincere thanks to Oliver,” said Bruce Riley, head of the DWR Technical department. “Our knowledge on tips and tricks and prompt problem solving has increased. We have learnt about support, how to listen to problems over the phone and how to swiftly get to the bottom of issues.”

USA - “Magic is what we do, Music is how we do it,” Jerry Garcia once told an interviewer. Had the Grateful Dead frontman been around to see the fantastical transformation of his namesake forest at the recent Lockin’ Festival, he undoubtedly would have agreed that there can be quite a bit of magic involved in lighting too.
S. Jeremy Peters turned the thickly wooded ‘Garcia’s Forest’ around Lockin’s Terrapin Station Stage (named after the Grateful Dead’s mystical 1977 album) into a transcendental canopy of colour with 150 pixel-mapped IP65 par fixtures that he controlled with his ChamSys PC Wing and Playback Wing.
Peters, the owner of SJP Productions, hung between three and five lights on over 30 trees in the forest. The glow from these fixtures radiated throughout the woods, colorizing other trees and creating a wonderland around the stage. Using modified hunting stands to set up his rig without harming the trees, he positioned his pars high over the ground. This not only aided in spreading the light, it also kept the fixtures safely out of the reach of festival goers.
The glowing forest provided a colourful backdrop for the music on the stage, which featured a life-sized replica of the Terrapin Station Porch that graced the cover of the Grateful Dead album. Peters lit the stage using only six par fixtures.
“We wanted very minimal stage lighting to keep the ‘porch’ vibe, so we just used a basic front wash and a coloured wash on the tent ceiling,” he explained. “The idea was to make sure the porch façade was well lit

Tahiti - Nexo’s flagship modular line array, the STM Series, has been installed in its most exotic location to date – the To’Ata Showground in Papeete, the capital of Tahiti.
This very large showground, available for rental in different configurations that can accommodate 3200-6000 people, is the primary cultural events venue in French Polynesia, staging rock and pop concerts for up to 5000 people. It is also home to the Heiva, a spectacular two-month festival of dance and sport which dates back to 1881. Teams and troupes arrive from all the islands, more than 8000 participants in all, with the best chant and dance groups competing on the famous To’Ata stage.
Te Fare Tahiti Nui (TFTN), the public service organisation which manages the venue, was tasked with choosing a PA system that could match the showground’s versatility. Working closely with Comimpex, the Nexo distributor in Tahiti, TFTN opted for the scalable STM Series modular line array which could provide the best quality without compromise in different configurations.
Nexo field support engineer Val Gilbert flew to Tahiti to set up the system. “This is a perfect example of the true benefits of modularity. The entire setup can be re-configured to provide an optimised solution for all their events, despite the challenges of reduced sight lines when the production companies want the loudspeakers to be invisible on camera during the traditional events.”

Norway - Acoustic problems are not limited to historic venues - many newer concert halls still experience issues with reverb or frequencies that can be difficult to eliminate. But an Alcons Audio pro-ribbon system has made a major difference to the main live venue in Tromsø, Norway.
Owned by the municipality of Tromsø, KulturHuset opened in 1984 and is used for a wide range of productions including opera, theatre, stand-up comedy, rock, pop and classical concerts. It also shows films during the Tromsø International Film Festival. The main auditorium can accommodate a seated audience of 620, or 1200 with the seats removed.
The main auditorium’s existing PA had been in place for over 10 years and the theatre felt that it was time to modernise and embrace the latest technology to help minimise a problem with bass reverberation.
"Sound quality was of course one of the most important considerations, a new system had to deliver equally high quality audio for all the varied types of production that we host,” says KulturHuset stage manager John Bekkelund. “The difficult acoustic characteristics also meant that we were looking for a system that was at the cutting edge of current technology.”
John and the team looked at a number of options, finally settling on the Alcons LR18 compact mid-size line-array, to be supplied by local installation specialists Lydproduksjon Tromsø AS.

UK - Organised by LSi magazine, the 2017 PLASA Awards for Innovation took place at the end of a very busy Monday at this year’s PLASA Show. Hosted by PLASA’s managing director Peter Heath, the awards aim to recognise and reward outstanding new product ideas. 
The Awards garner a huge amount of respect because they are independently and impartially judged by an invited team of industry experts.
To win an Award for Innovation and Sustainability, a nominated product had to satisfy the chairman of judges that it met the criteria for Innovation by clearly showing that it demonstrates a new style of thinking; improves technical practice; introduces new technology, new materials or new techniques; includes patents or unique intellectual property; offers a new commercial advantage, or improves safety.
“This year we saw an incredible 40 products nominated, rather fittingly for our 40th year,” says Peter. “The judges can give up to eight Awards of equal standing - plus they have the option to make one or more of these a ‘GOLD’ Award - to recognise products they believe stand out above the others. They also have the option to present the PLASA Award for Sustainability, for products which offer a significant reduction of power usage; or make effective use of renewable energy sources; or which offer a significant reduction in environmental impact of its product lifecycle.”

UK - Chroma-Q has appointed Paul Pelletier as global brand manager for Chroma-Q. Pelletier is a 30 year veteran in the performance lighting industry working for industry leaders, most recently Martin Professional in the role of solution manager. Bringing with him extensive experience working with key brands, Paul has been an integral asset in brand development and marketing. He has worked closely with product development, sales, marketing and technical support to develop products, as well as to promote and sell these products within the lighting marketplace.
Reporting to Jean-François Canuel, managing director for the Canadian Operations, Paul will provide the direction to promote and continue the growth of the Chroma-Q brand, with support and training for clients and users. He will also work closely with Chroma-Q’s R&D team to create forward-looking, successful product development efforts that anticipate and fulfill end-user lighting design needs.
Paul will be based near Chroma-Q’s North American manufacturing operations in Toronto, Canada.

USA - What The Festival (WTF) returned to the Wolf Run Ranch in Oregon on 16-19 June for the sixth edition of the boutique festival. Funktion-One sound, including a Vero system for the main stage, was deployed across the festival, courtesy of Sound Investment and Fusebox Productions.
WTF was born in 2012, the same year that the festival’s co-founder, Glen Boyd, had Sound Investment install a Funktion-One sound system in his house. This year’s event welcomed 7,500 people, who came for what Boyd describes as: “A totally immersive festival”.
“It’s not about massive crowds and headliners, it’s about the whole experience, which includes interactive art, eight stages of electronic and live music, guest speakers and movement classes,” he says. “We don’t do pass outs because we want our community to stay together and for the environment to be as immersive as possible.”
To ensure that each stage has its own immersive aural environment, Boyd, together with fellow co-owners Tiffany Boyd and Peter Clark, stipulates that Funktion-One loudspeakers feature throughout.
Boyd continues: “I believe Funktion-One sound provides the best experience. I’ve followed the brand since the early 2000s and I’ve watched them improve and get better. There isn’t anything in the market that comes close in terms of quality and the warmness of the sound.”

UK - Historic landmark building (and former picture house), The Scala at Kings Cross originally opened its doors just after the end of World War 1. More recently, in its current guise as an eclectic live music and dance/club venue, it has played host to many top bands since the venue reopened in 1999, including Tiesto, Bastille, Ed Sheeran, Nine Inch Nails, Kaiser Chiefs, Foo Fighters, Rihanna, Rita Ora, Lana Del Rey, The Killers and Stereophonics.
In order to keep up with the demanding technical requirements of artistes of this calibre, the Scala recently upgraded its house PA system to a Martin Audio MLA Compact, with the new system designed and installed by Capital Sound (for whom both The Killers and Stereophonics are long-term touring accounts).
With as many as 800 people packing the place for live stage events (rising to 1145 capacity for club nights), audiences too are now treated to pristine digital audio from the new mixer-loudspeaker combination.
Explaining the background to the sale, Capital Sound’s operations & development director, Paul Timmins stated that when his company became aware that the Scala were starting to upgrade, having taken possession of a new digital console, they approached the venue’s technical manager, David Preston and he in turn introduced them to Scala owner, Ryan Bissett and Operations director, Lee Hazell.

Italy - An Allen & Heath dLive C Class mixing system was selected for a charity concert by famous tenor, Andrea Bocelli, held at Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico, Italy, for his foundation, Voices of Haiti.
Held annually, this year’s concert featured a choir of 60 young Haitian singers, who are part of an educational Andrea Bocelli Foundation (ABF) musical project. The opera star accompanied the choir and there was also performances from several international guest artists. Now in its 12th year, the concert was attended by more than 15,000 people.
PA company, Luciano Spera Audio Video Luci, was responsible for audio requirements on the night, selecting a compact dLive C3500 Surface with CDM48 MixRack, to manage FOH.
Sound engineer, Pierpaolo Guerrini, commented: “The dLive C Class was a great choice for this concert. Its compact size means we did not take up much space in the audience, and the audio clarity, depth and quality of the system make it the perfect choice for classical events.”

Australia - Brisbane’s Point Source Solutions are specialist AV integrators that pride themselves on making complex systems work. With skills across multiple disciplines, Point Source can do everything from event management, to networking infrastructure, to LED video screen design. With a diverse roster of clients, Point Source recently found themselves aboard two P&O cruise ships, the Pacific Dawn and the flagship Pacific Explorer, upgrading their theatre’s lighting system with High End System’s Full Boar 4 consoles.
With a rotating line-up of productions created for the global cruise giant by Sydney’s Grayboy Entertainment, theatre on the P&O line is just as complex and technical as it is on dry land. Grayboy’s lighting designer Gavan Swift is a dedicated Hog user, and specifies High End Systems consoles for all of the P&O shows. As part of a major upgrade, both the Explorer and Dawn’s Full Boar 3s were retired and directly replaced by the latest Full Boar 4s.
“I specified the Full Boar 4 firstly due to its ease of use and intuitive control interface,” said Gavan Swift. “The second reason was that the Full Boar is a direct upgrade from the Hog 3 with similarities in how the two consoles operate resulting in less training for the on-board crew who have to program and operate the lighting console on a daily basis.

UK - The PLASA Show’s second year at London Olympia marks its 40th anniversary. It may be 40 years old, but the show has moved with the times, adapting its offering to accommodate the shift in how companies want to exhibit.
There are over 200 brands on the show floor this year, displaying the very latest pro audio, lighting, AV, staging and rigging technology. UK - Sunday 17 September marked the 10th anniversary of the prestigious Knight of Illumination (KOI) Awards, held at the Eventim Apollo in London. During the dazzling evening event, 24 respected designers were 'knighted' - and bestowed with the iconic KOI sword.
The event was skillfully compered by the inimitable Ola Melzig, an internationally renowned technical director perhaps best known for his tireless work on the annual Eurovision Song Contest - the world's biggest televised music event.
More than 500 entertainment technology industry professionals gathered together to celebrate the achievements of the many international lighting and video designers whose work on shows across the UK earned them a coveted place on the shortlist for this year's KOI Awards. The winners are as follows:

UK - Novum Audio Visual Ltd., a leading Midlands-based conference and technical event production company, has just invested in a significant stock of Outline PA equipment along with flying hardware, flight cases and amplifiers as part of an exercise to both revitalize and streamline their rental stock inventory. Novum’s technical team voted unanimously for the Outline products after a blind shoot-out between seven different speaker manufacturers.
Novum’s commercial director, Tim Jacques, takes up the story: “In this current tranche of investment, we essentially had two issues to resolve. First, we were looking to overhaul our point source stock, and secondly we wanted to set a foundation and a direction for our next investment into a large-format solution.

South Africa - Ayrton has announced the appointment of Zane Cretten as the latest member of its expanding sales team. Based in South Africa, Cretten will take on the position of regional sales manager, with responsibility for sales across Africa and the Middle East.
Cretten brings with him 11 years’ experience in the live events industry, specialising in video and lighting. During this time he has worked with major global brands including High End, Barco, Pandora’s Box, d3, CreateLED, Wings and Caliber.
“When the opportunity arose to join Ayrton I jumped at the chance,” says Cretten. “I am very excited to be joining such a highly-specialised, innovative lighting company. UK - DiGiCo has announced the launch of a new DMI-MIC Pre-Amp Card for its S-Series digital mixing consoles, offering additional connectivity.
The S-Series has already benefitted from an increase from 40 to 48 flexi channels as part of a recent update, and the new DMI-MIC Pre-Amp Card adds an extra eight mic inputs, connected via a 25-way D-sub, using the same pre-amps already found in the console. This allows for up to 40 mic inputs directly on the console surface.
DiGiCo consoles are used on many of the biggest live sound tours and events around the world and the launch of new, compact S-Series made this pedigree of audio performance available to every part of the industry, with Stealth Digital Processing introducing a new standard of audio quality, power and flexibility not seen before at its price point.
The S-Series multi-touch touch screens, breaking the mould for small format consoles, with up to 31 faders, 96kHz processing, Internal FX and bundles of I/O. With plug-in DMI cards the S-Series can operate in a wide variety of environments by adding extra I/O or connectivity options, including MADI, Dante or Waves SoundGrid.

Tourflex Cabling builds cable assemblies to customers' specific requirements in its manufacturing facility in High Wycombe, not far from London. The level of customisation even goes down to adding specific heat shrink labelling, RFIDs and barcodes as required by the client. Typical customers include rental and production companies, as well as venues and installers.
