UK - Martin Audio will be hosting three open days at their High Wycombe HQ between 13-15 March.
The company is inviting rental companies, FOH and monitor engineers and other members of the touring community to better understand its product range and enjoy extensive listening at its offices as it won’t be attending Prolight + Sound 2018 in April in Frankfurt.
The product selection will include many of the company’s solutions for a wide range of rental staging applications, including Wavefront Precision optimised line arrays, iKON amplifiers, XE and LE Series monitors, as well as the hugely popular CDD-LIVE and BlacklineX.
Martin Audio managing director, Dom Harter, says: “When we staged our first series of open days back in September we were overwhelmed by the response. Therefore when it came to scheduling a similar event in the Spring it was logical to extend it to six sessions covering an extra day, to give our customers greater flexibility.
“The event takes on additional significance given the success of our new live sound portfolio over the past 12 months. For anyone who misses us at ISE in February, High Wycombe HQ is the place to be.”
In addition to sound demos, the open days will also include tours of the factory and refreshments.
UK - It had been more than 20 years since the EMAs descended on London, but it certainly did not look or sound that way at the SSE Arena on 12 November, 2017. Hosted by Rita Ora, the production was in the safe hands of long-time MTV audio supplier, Britannia Row, whose specification this time around was dominated by DiGiCo.
After more than two decades of working with the EMAs, Britannia Row's console deployment has now been condensed mainly to DiGiCo consoles.
Company director, Lez Dwight reports, “We have a long-standing relationship with DiGiCo, and find the technical support and service absolutely world class. MTV is always a challenge from a technical perspective, and this year was no exception; the performance area covered the entire arena floor, but this area was also built up off the floor by 4.75m, giving room for large lifts and sub stage space. We had three separate locations for monitor desks, RF, and FOH, and the five DiGiCo SD Racks and fibre loop capabilities helped us to achieve this.”
Two SD7s were assigned to monitors, with three SD5s at FOH - two for the show, one for prep - and the presenters and guests all went through two SD12s. Every artist on the night, barring The Killers, used DiGiCo, and it was a very smooth operation all round.
“It was a spectacular show from an audio and visual standpoint,” says Lez. “Fourteen acts performed in just two hours without any issue, but really that's just another day in the office for our stellar crew, led by Pete McGlynn.”

UK - White Light has announced the signing of a five-year in-house supplier contract with The Mermaid London.
The contract, which begun on 1 January, will see WL work alongside The Mermaid London to improve existing equipment as well as introduce new lighting, audio, video, rigging and staging technical solutions and products to enhance the venue’s event production offering. To complement the supply of equipment WL will be appointing a specialist project manager to handle all enquiries and manage the day-to-day technical support required on events.

UK - Cirro Lite (Europe) has added Dedolight DLED7 ‘Turbo’ bi-colour kits to its rental fleet. The 4-head kits are colour tuneable from 2700K to 6500K and come complete with four AC controllers plus one extra DC controller and V-Lok battery plate. Lighting stands and gel filter holders are also included in the hard roller kit cases.
Due to its active cooling system the DLED7 light sources have now nearly doubled in output when compared to the DLED4 (40W) units. Although these light heads provide significantly higher light output, the weight of these light heads is still identical with the original DLED4.
The DLED7 light heads are compatible with all the same imaging attachments as DLED4 and classic DLH4 which makes them extremely versatile, says the company. These compact and powerful lighting systems with remarkable focusing capabilities have already become one of the most sought-after tools on professional film sets.
USA - For the second year running, Houston-based event staging company Stage Directions Inc. provided the creative visuals for the city’s annual Toast to Living Well gala, considered Houston’s largest black-tie event. Held to raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Harvey, this year saw a large Elation lighting package light the variety of gala events.
Stage Directions Inc. was responsible for event staging and media production, working for client ZT Wealth and the Altus Foundation. “We worked closely with the client, as well as décor, and helped contribute ideas to the overall event flow,” states Trent Blake, executive vice president of Stage Directions Inc. “Our main purpose was to maximize the environmental aspects of the event, what the attendees feel, what they see, and what they hear. We used scenic design elements, lighting, video, lasers, and audio to create the appropriate effects that the client wanted.”
The event, which took place at Hilton Americas Hotel on 9 December and attracted 1,500 attendees, had a ‘high-end futuristic’ theme but still required a corporate gala feel, according to Blake.
Lighting needed to work overtime as the event included a fashion show, CEO presentations and awards, a band, DJ, illusionist, after-party and, of course, a seated dinner. Stage Directions Inc. contracted freelance lighting designer Elliot Matson to light the show.

USA - Years ago, Mark ‘Junior’ Jacobson met a Milwaukee band, London USA! Fast forward a couple of decades and Jacobson’s career has soared to great heights as the lighting designer for a number of top artists, including multi-Grammy winning metal giants Tool. This fall, the well-known LD was reunited with his old friends when he stepped up to the FOH desk at the Saloon on Calhoun music hall to run the board for their Not Dead Yet reunion show.
In addition to reuniting with old friends on this warm fall night, Jacobson made some new ones when he worked with the Chauvet Professional Rogue fixtures on LD Glenn Ottenbacher’s power-packed house rig. “This is what I would call a pretty high-energy venue,” said Ottenbacher. “We have a relatively small stage for the level of acts we get in here, so there’s a strong artist-audience connection. I built the lighting rig to bring out the immersive atmosphere of this room.”
Ottenbacher’s rig for the London USA show included six Rogue R1 Spot, four Rogue R1 Wash and two Rogue R1 FX-B fixtures, as well as 11 COLORado 1 Tour units. The spots were flown about 10’ on vertical poles positioned along the upstage deck. Jacobson used them to backlight the band in colours and white, and to create sweeps that accented high points of the group’s performance.

USA - Bicentennial Park was aglow with the lights from Bandit Lites as the city bid farewell to 2017 and kicked off 2018. Voted the best destination to ring in the new year by USA Today, Jack Daniel’s Music City Midnight: New Year’s Eve celebration boasted an estimated 100,000 in attendance.
Following the famed Music City Note dropping at midnight, country music super star Keith Urban took the stage, while earlier performances included Maren Morris, Cheap Trick, Carly Pearce, Jonny P, Larkin Poe, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
In a collaborative effort between lighting designer Erik Parker, production managers Chris Lisle and Mark Anderson and the Nashville Convention and Visitor Corp event producers, the massive event featured spaces built on the previous year’s show with different areas needing various lights, including a selfie station, street arches, roundabouts, bridges and site lighting.
“As this was the second year on this site, we had a lot of knowledge on ways to improve based on last year’s show and ways to continue to brand this event,” said Parker. “One of the top priorities with everyone (after safety) is to create a vibe across the entire site for people to enjoy their evening and celebrate bringing in the new year, whatever that means to them.”

Israel - Robe Pointe and DL4S Profile moving lights have been installed as part of the spectacular City of David Lightshow - Hallelujah - in Jerusalem, a gripping and intense multimedia experience relating the history of the city which is projected onto the walls of the ancient citadel of King David, surrounded by the associated archaeological site and steeped in history dating back over 3000 years.
Lighting was designed by Micha Margalit and delivered by Danor Theatre and Studio Systems who won a tender issued by the Israel Government Tourist Corporation (IGTC). Further, Danor was also asked by AVS Creative - who co-ordinated all the project’s multimedia aspects and the integration between light, sound and projection - to work on the actual physical lighting installation.
Challenges included dealing with the difficult topography and the specific positions where lights needed to be rigged, managing the cable runs with diligence and care and negotiating the environment which is both an active archaeological excavation and a popular heritage site and tourist destination.
All this entailed a very complex operation to integrate the lighting and maintain the integrity, history and significance of the site.
The team at Danor worked closely with Micha the lighting designer and proposed a Robe solution for the entertainment elements that support the 45-minute projected show.
Danor has also supplied hundreds of LED lights dotted around the two sites highlighting the architecture, excavations and the totally unique spaces.
UK - In December, specialist lighting and rigging provider TSL successfully met the large-scale production requirements and tight deadlines for a festive event with a difference - the UK's largest carol service, staged at the SSE Wembley Arena, London.
Continuing a long-standing client relationship with international Christian church organisation Hillsong, TSL provided rigging and lighting services for London Carols, which saw three back-to-back performances on 17 December, reaching a total live audience of 30,000.
Arena-scale show production always places huge demands on suppliers and crew, and the requirements for London Carols were no different, says Sam Tamplin, managing director of TSL. "We supplied the rigging equipment for all departments, so it was imperative we didn't hold anything up. The load-in schedule was meticulously planned by Hillsong down to 15-minute slots, and we were kept accountable to that."
According to Tamplin, TSL's solution to these demands was great crew, and great preparation. "Crew Chief Karl Lawton and Marcus Brown looked after the rigging, using our moving pre-rig for every lighting truss. We also had a full four days of prep in our warehouse, which saved hours of time on-site."
Hillsong called on the services of lighting designer Tim Routledge - more commonly associated with the likes of Take That and Jeff Lynne's ELO - to create a suitably awe-inspiring set and lighting for its 2016 carols. USA - Grace Fellowship Church in Bogart, Georgia has completed a major audio and video system upgrade including an Allen & Heath S Class Digital Mixing System with S5000 Surface, DM64 MixRack, DX32 Expander and seven ME-1 Personal Mixers with an ME-U Hub.
The church hosts two contemporary worship services each Sunday with praise vocalists, a 30-voice choir and a band with keyboards, drums, acoustic and electric guitar and bass. Services are recorded and live streamed over the church’s website.
dB Integrations of Gainesville, Georgia designed and installed the church’s new systems. dB’s Ronnie Stanford says, “Grace Fellowship had an older analogue mixer and wanted to move to digital for its flexibility and for their streaming broadcast.” The church auditioned several digital mixers but, after a dLive demo from dB Integrations, Rick Freeman, technical advisor to the church and a broadcast engineer for the University of Georgia Athletics Department, said, “Hands down, there was no question about which mixer was the winner.”
Grace Fellowship’s dLive mixes both FOH and monitors. To minimize stage clutter, the church’s vocalists have wireless in-ear monitors and the band uses a mix of wireless and wired ears fed by six Allen & Heath ME-1 Personal Mixers and an ME-U 10-Port Hub. The church uses a seventh ME-1 to mix its streaming broadcast. Freeman explained, “We stream both of our services on Sunday and the dLive provides a clean, adjustable mix but the ME-1 allows us to make minor adjustments easily.”
Germany - Lleyendecker Event Solutions has chosen the immersive spatial audio capabilities of TiMax SoundHub to animate its various auto industry clients’ corporate events; ranging from Porsche, BMW to Volkswagen, TiMax is used to add immersion, presence and impact to large-scale multimedia tradeshow booth creations as well as dealer meetings and launch events.
Due to the high-profile nature of such events, Lleyendecker always install a pair of TiMax units ensuring full and immediate cover for redundancy. To this end, the company recently invested in two TiMax SoundHub-S64 frames, each providing 64-tracks of playback, audio editing and spatial rendering, plus 64x64 channels of source and system EQ and group control, dynamic delay-matrix and Dante64 audio networking.
Lleyendecker deployed their two new TiMax units immediately, first for BMW at the IAA, Germany’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt, and then in Johannesburg for a prestigious Porsche promotional event.

Dominican Republic - More than 50,000 fans packed the Dominican Republic's Olympic Stadium in November to experience The Festival Presidente, the Caribbean's largest international music festival.
On the festival's opening night, Latin music star Gabriel performed in front of epic LED screens displaying florid, fast-paced graphics, powered by Avolites' Ai R8 media servers.
Yamil Charif of YC3 Lighting Design worked with a team of South American creatives, including lighting design partner Richard Vincens, to create the vivid Gabriel set. He initially programmed it using an Ai template at his Miami studio using dummy content before the real content, designed by a team of animators, was delivered just days before the event.
With a team of people inputting ideas and many last-minute developments, Charif needed to continue programming the R8 servers right up until show time. Due to the number of artists performing at the festival, including Justin Timberlake, Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias, Charif's programming time on site was limited so he programmed both off-site and on the fly.
"Some of the final content was only delivered a day before the show," he says. "Thankfully, the R8 servers are very strong because they are intuitive. You can tweak parameters as you go, producing really fast results. With the R8s you have versatility - by just right-clicking on a clip you can make changes to it or add timecode time to it. It's not complicated at all."

Actor-Musicianship - Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance is to launch a master’s in actor-musicianship. It will be rolled out in October this year and will add to the school’s existing BA (hons) in actor-musicianship. The drama school claims the course is the first of its kind in the world. It is being designed by Jeremy Harrison, author of the book Actor-Musicianship.
Following an initial year, the students will have the opportunity to progress to a master of fine arts qualification. This will be followed by an optional second year of study. “With actor-musicianship very much part of the established theatre scene, in the UK and America, it’s a natural step for professional theatre makers. They will see an intensive and in-depth exploration of how musical and acting processes can interrelate and feed each other,” Harrison said. Rose Bruford is holding information days about the course on 20 February and 6 March.
Fame on the Road - Fame – The Musical has announced a 30th anniversary UK tour. After opening at the Manchester Palace Theatre on 26 July, Fame will visit locations including Glasgow, Blackpool, Bradford, Sheffield and Birmingham. The tour runs until February 2019, with the final date at the Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury. Fame the Musical has seen seven West End runs since opening in Miami 1988.

Europe - In response to the news that the EU is once again contemplating banning the use of tungsten halogen light bulbs in entertainment lighting, the Association of Lighting Designers (ALD) is co-ordinating a high-speed effort to gather reasons as to why this ban should not move forward, particularly from those who would be materially affected by such a ban, in time to create a formal response before the end of the proposal’s consultation period on 26th January 2018.
“The ban is not strictly new,” notes acclaimed, award-winning lighting designer Michael Hulls, who is leading the effort as a continuation of his earlier ‘Save Tungsten’ campaign. “The EU has been moving towards banning the use of all tungsten light sources for some years. However, theatre lighting has, until now, had an exemption from this ban. This exemption is what the EU is now proposing to end. Were that to happen, it would mean that by 2020 we would no longer be able to obtain bulbs to keep our stocks of familiar, reliable tungsten theatre lighting fixtures, from the Source Four all the way back to the Patt 23, working.”

Europe - Britannia Row Productions was one of the first companies globally to make an investment in Sennheiser’s new Digital 6000 series, instantly deploying it on Robbie Williams’ The Heavy Entertainment Show tour, which started in Europe last summer and continues with dates in New Zealand and Australia in February and March this year.
Robbie’s long-term FOH engineer Simon Hodge had used a Sennheiser SKM 5200 wireless microphone for the artist since 2013, but the continuing reduction in RF spectrum prompted a look at Sennheiser’s new Digital 6000 system, which offers the same audio quality as the company’s flagship Digital 9000 series microphones in a two-channel receiver.
“It seemed a very good idea to look at Sennheiser’s digital option as it helps with reducing spectrum usage which, with a show that has so much RF, really helps us,” says Brit Row’s Josh Lloyd. “And once we auditioned them, the sonic benefits were very clear; the vocal sounds a lot more open and natural and the bleed from other sources down the mics is far cleaner and less problematic for us.”
“The process of arranging the initial demo was quite challenging, as the 6000 series was still in the final stages of production and not yet released,” explains Sennheiser artist relations manager Jack Drury. “But we were really keen for Brit Row to try the system with Robbie, as we believed it would be a great fit for the tour.”

South Africa - Staging and set company Dream Sets has purchased the Vectorworks 2018 design software from DWR Distribution.
Mauritz Jacobs, lighting designer at Dream Sets, reports: “As a lighting designer, I have been using Vectorworks since 2014. Vectorworks has all the needed built-in features that I need to create and manipulate plans from start to finish (set and technical wise).”
Jacobs continues: “As you know, our industry is very fast-paced and time is not always on our side. With the new Vectorworks 2018 they have really gone out of their way to make it as easy and quick as possible to get designs out in limited time. Once you know your way around it, it’s easy to do large designs in a limited time period. Also, the set side of the programme has many new features like the event design which speeds designing up on another level.”
USA - Pennsylvania-based Anderson Audio recently added 24 Eastern Acoustic Works (EAW) Anya modules to their Adaptive inventory, which comprises 28 Anna and 40 Otto subwoofers.
“When we invested in Adaptive almost two years ago, it gave us the opportunity to build on our existing client base and expand the business,” explains owner Chris Anderson. “It has worked extremely well. So much so that we decided to add the larger Anya system to further our growth.”
EAW Adaptive technology is designed for a wide range of applications that require exceptional sound quality, high output and precise coverage. Both the Anya and Anna modules can adapt coverage to any venue geometry in seconds. Because the arrays are made up of columns that hang straight, and are oftentimes more than one, they provide the ideal footprint for applications that require pristine coverage and clean sightlines.
Anderson originally invested in 24 Anna and eight of its companion Otto subwoofer modules. Shortly thereafter he expanded with four more Anna and another 32 Otto subwoofers. After trying out Anya with Anna for a few events, including Scott Hamilton’s Scott Cares fundraiser in Cleveland, he decided that making Anya a permanent fixture in his inventory would be a sound business move.
“For this year’s Scott Cares event we flew left-right hangs, each consisting of a column of eight Anya for the main PA and six Anna for out-fill. Low end was provided by two columns of six Otto subwoofers flown next to each Anya/Anna array,” Anderson adds. “We
UK - City Theatrical has reduced the price for the student license of its Moving Light Assistant software. The application can be used from the pre-production phase for planning and designing the moving light rig to producing the final documentation of the programming. The student license enables all features of the application for a period of three years from purchase and can be installed and activated on two computers. The application is now available in Europe for £20 or in the Americas, Asia and the Middle East for $25.
“Moving Light Assistant is being used for many large-scale repertory theatres for managing the moving light focuses of their productions,” said Andrew Voller, creator and developer of Moving Light Assistant and freelance lighting designer. “Lowering the Student Licence pricing is aimed at allowing students easy access to learn and use this software as its use becomes more prevalent on productions around the world.”

Lighting designer Daniel Reistenhofer from D-TWO Stage&Light Creations was asked to light the 2017 season opening event and he enlisted the help of over 100 Robe moving lights - 74 x Pointes and 34 x BMFL WashBeams.
Event organisers, Leutgeb Entertainment Group and the Planai Hochwurzen Bahnen Gesellschafft, saw some of Daniel’s other stage designs and wanted something totally different to what had been done before.
The format was similar to a large EDM event, a large stage - 40 x 24m - was set up next to the Planai ski slope - normally the finish line for the Night Race - and around 16,000 people packed in to enjoy the start of December opening event and the international line-up that included Martin Garrix, Alle Farben and Alan Walker rocking the slopes.
Daniel was asked to design set, video and lighting, which was a massive bonus…, so he proposed a design based on four hills representing the contours of the Planai mountain cableway, with the big one in the middle being the Dachstein. This was topped, jauntily, by a large scenic bobble hat.
Lighting-wise, he wanted to give as much scope and flexibility as possible to the guest LDs arriving with each of the headlining DJs, so with limited programming time, they had the chance to make up great looking scenes quickly and easily.

Set to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s version of Christmas Eve in Sarajevo, the ad featured masterful pacing from subtle car headlights to a massive 65,000 DMX-channel paragon of holiday lighting highlighting the showroom building and surrounding landscape. Featuring nearly 500 various lights communicating over two V-LAN groups, with a total of 75 Ethernet devices, the network relied heavily on its nerve centre, four ProPlex EZ-LANs.
“The EZ-LANs were easy to use and kept costs down,” says Ardine. “EZ-LANs formed the backbone of the network, shuttling the two VLANs around the location. From the EZ-LANs we cascaded to other switches and we had no network issues. We created two versions of the 30-second commercial and one 72-second version. We used two MBOX units to pixel map the lights on the walls and the bushes, then sent that sACN data into GrandMA2 to do an HTP merge so that we could visualise on the model of the building in MA 3D.”
Ardine adds: “The EZ-LANs worked great and they’re the answer to simplifying complex networking productions. I’ve used them in instructional classes but this was the first real-world application, and their performance exceeded our expectations. Our thanks to Matthew Shimamoto of Volt Lites for providing the units. We’ll definitely use them again.”
USA - When the young man who celebrated his bar mitzvah at Georgetown’s upscale Park Hyatt was born in 2004, Pac-Man was about to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Such is the staying power of the video game invented by Toru Iwatani, that the youngster opted to build his reception around a Pac-Man theme. Digital wall images of the yellow circular figure with the gaping mouth adorned the reception area, as did representations of the game’s famous labyrinth.
To create a classic video arcade atmosphere in the reception area and accentuate the digital Pac-Man images that decorated it, the event organizers draped the walls in black. This created a stunning effect, but it also made it challenging to colorize the room’s dining tables. Eric Hertsch of John Farr Lighting Design successfully met this challenge with the help of Chauvet Professional Ovation E-910FC ellipsoidal fixtures.
Hertsch positioned eight of the RGBA-Lime colour-mixing fixtures on 12’ truss towers located throughout the room and used them to wash its long rectangular tables in warm appealing colours. In addition to engendering an inviting atmosphere, the saturated light from the Ovation fixtures created a balanced look against the room’s dark walls.
“The colours made the tables stand out aesthetically as part of the décor,” said Hertsch. “We selected the Ovations specifically for the colour-changing capability of their RGBA-Lime colour-mixing engine. UK - Working with set designer Joshua Grace and lighting director Gurdip Mahal, LED Creative played a part supporting the crew at A Night for the Emergency Services, a seasonal celebration and show of appreciation for the work carried out by the nationwide heroes in uniforms.
Filmed in front of a live audience at The London Studios, host Ashley Banjo was joined by high-octane dance troupe Diversity to introduce and share performances by talented members from all sectors of the emergency services.
Created around Grace’s linear installation awash with movement and intense colour, the set incorporated the LED Creative BYTE Pixel Control System matched with an array of the company’s Sigma Sparkle Wands which the designer suspended across the entire stage to add crisp, highly controllable accents and depth to the performance.
