USA - On 23 June 2018, a dedicated group of music industry professionals will embark on a 12-day, 500-mile bicycle ride along the California coast to raise awareness and funding for spinal cord injury sufferers.
The event, produced by non-profit organisation Celebrate Overcoming, is inspired by the physical and spiritual journey of spinal cord injury survivor and musician David Francisco. In April 2016, David’s life changed forever, in a split second.
While the 24-year-old was riding his bike home from his recording classes at Nashville’s Blackbird Academy, a distracted driver ran a red light and crashed into him at 40 miles per hour. The impact was catastrophic: He shattered his spine in three places, and was told he’d likely never walk again.
After a year of intense physical rehabilitation, David has defied the odds and learned to walk, and this past June, graduated Blackbird Academy. His next goal: Learning to ride a bike again, which he is accomplishing on a tandem cycle with his fiancée, Kristi, at the helm.
David’s indomitable spirit throughout his path to recovery gave rise to the David Francisco Ride for Hope. “Witnessing David’s courage and determination through his recovery from a catastrophic injury moved me to put this event together,” says ride executive director Kevin Becka. “The 500-mile trek is an effort to bring awareness and drive funds to those with spinal cord injuries and to help others to overcome and move beyond life-altering events.” “I am inspired every day by David and his positive attitude and

Belgium - The band at the heart of popular Belgian TV series Ghost Rockers – produced by Studio 100 and syndicated throughout Europe – hits the road for a series of gigs around Belgium this autumn, complete with a fresh lighting design by Belgian design studio Painting with Light’s Paco Mispelters.
One of Paco’s starting points was the practical consideration of different sized venues on the tour, so from the outset, the look and the lighting rig had to be scalable.
The audience is young and the music is lively pop-rock, so he needed lots of dynamics, colour and vitality. Added to that, there is a narrative to the set – the show is directed by Tijl Dauwe so some strategic tricks were required, including a classical touch of theatrical magic - a Pepper’s Ghost.
With no set as such, apart from some low stairs and a couple of risers, Paco also needed to create additional structural elements, and proved that 48 active Showtec Sunstrips upstage and a bit of imaginative programming can go a long way.
The Sunstrips were rigged in 10 continuous and broken columns, and to four vertical trusses at the back.
Behind this – far upstage - the band’s scenic logo is rigged and illuminated with its own set of LED PARs.
All this combines to bring a depth and a sense of three-dimensionality to the space.
The Pepper’s Ghost effect is created by an area of LED floor on which the ghosted character (from the theatre) appears, and this image is bounced to the audience via a screen immediately above centre stage, angled at

UK/Ireland - Unusual Rigging are no novices when it comes to the technical ins and outs of Miss Saigon. The company worked on the original show when it opened in the West End nearly three decades ago and again in 2014 when the show re-opened to rave reviews at the Prince Edward Theatre in London. Cameron Mackintosh's production of Boubil and Schonberg's Miss Saigon began touring this summer – and once again Unusual Rigging have been brought on board to ensure the success of the musical as it tours the UK and Ireland.
The show is currently running at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin until the end of November when it moves to the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Helen Guest, production manager explained: "The tour itself is based on the version of the show which ran at the Prince Edward Theatre but with some additions that were introduced in the Broadway version earlier this year.
“The set is a mixture of new built elements and a refurbishment of a set that we used in Korea. All in all it is actually a bigger show that in London – even though it's a tour! We transport 16 x 45ft trailers and Unusual Rigging are asked with overseeing all the rigging elements of the production."
With the Unusual team headed by Simon Stone being brought onto the project in April 2017, they were supplied with a hefty brief. "We basically supply all the hoists, control and rigging to the flown lighting, sound and set," commented Simon. USA - Special Event Services (SES) used Outline loudspeakers to craft the live sound of the Avett Brothers during their three-night stint at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver.
The 9,525-capacity mountain venue lies over 6,000ft above sea level and presents some unusual conditions to visiting sound reinforcement companies.
SES president Jason Farah comments: ‘Red Rocks is a challenging venue, as it is very long, very steep, and the PA is at the bottom of the hill with limited trim height. I employed a few innovative techniques to overcome these challenges, and the results were nothing less than remarkable - in fact, the Outline GTO / C-12 / Mantas design I deployed provided the best outcome of all the PA systems I've ever used there.”
Farah continues, ’Because the Avett Brothers’ music ranges from the very lively to tender moments, it was amazing to stand in the back row at the top of the venue and still feel every nuance of their music. It was utterly uncanny that they were so far away, yet felt so incredibly close.”
The main system used a combination of Outline speaker elements, all drawn from SES’s extensive inventory of the Italian manufacturer’s products. Each of the main L&R arrays comprised 10 GTO modules at the top for the long-throw with three GTO C-12 below them for the shorter throw, then four Mantas at the bottom for down-fill. Normally, Outline’s dedicated GTO-DF downfall cabinet would used for the lower cabinets but since at Red Rocks the bottom of the array was so close to the audience, Mantas provided

Sweden - A sound system from d&b has been installed at Stockholm’s historic Maria Magdalena church as part of the building’s renovation.
SoundCop Consulting, who provided consultation and installation services for the project, had initially chosen another system, but switched d&b’s xC-Series column loudspeakers after attending a demo by d&b’s local partner Arva Trading at another Stockholm church, Stefanskyrkan (Saint Stephens church).
SoundCop Consulting decided to go with a combination of d&b’s xC-Series 2-way passive column loudspeakers, xS-Series loudspeakers, and B4 cardioid subwoofers along with the 10D four channel amplifier.
Natanael Lyckelind, sales and support AV/pro audio, at Arva Trading explains: “The passive cardioid function of the xC-Series column loudspeakers results in excellent dispersion control, which makes them particularly good for an environment like Maria Magdalena. SoundCop Consulting was very impressed with the results that they saw – or rather heard – at the demo.”
“We were totally blown away by how good it sounded at the demo,” confirms Jacob Julin, co-owner, SoundCop Consulting. “So, we went back and changed the whole specification for Maria Magdalena. This is the first two-way passive column speaker that we have seen that actually sounds like a proper PA system. The sound stays coherent and warm, rather than like it’s coming from a flimsy speaker, which is so often the case with the sound setup in a church.”

UK - Creative technical event production company Hawthorn constructed a 4,830sq.m set for eSports company ESL Gaming at the UK’s biggest games trade fair, EGX, held at NEC Birmingham in September.
Hawthorn delivered the vast custom-made set and supplied lighting, sound, rigging and staging, with five artic lorries needed to transport their kit - three of which were used just for the mammoth set.
The company created two large gaming stages, the ESL Premiership stage and the Twitch stage, both of which designed by ESL. Hawthorn custom built each set to ESL’s specifications, including the creation of custom gaming desks for the high-octane competition over the four days.
“With the ESL Arena covering nearly 5,000sq.m of space, this was a demanding job for us in terms of scenic creation” says Hawthorn senior project manager Ryan Grant who led the project. “Not only did we produce two stages, but we also custom built the exhibition stand for Intel to ESL’s exact specification.
“In total we had about a month of prep work and planning for the project before the on-site build started. We worked closely with the ESL team throughout the process to ensure everything met their specific requirements and achieved the best possible results.”
ESL creative team came up with an ambitious brief for the Intel stand, measuring 21m x 14m. The stand featured three large graphic walls with custom designed lightboxes used to highlight each of Intel’s featured processors. The brief also specified fitting a sub-hung flown truss that acted as a

UK - SGM moving heads are used for an art installation currently projected on the facade of Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London.
Wall of Dreams by Danish poet and artist Morten Søndergaard is being showcased from 18 October to 1 November as part of the Centre’s year-long Nordic Matters programme and aims to raise awareness of the refugee crisis in Europe.
The projection is realised by the deployment of 16 SGM G-Spot LED moving heads mounted on existing poles surrounding the building. Special gobos have been designed containing the textual messages with each moving head containing several of these custom-made gobos making it possible to alter the building facade over night for a changeable appearance through programming. The bright output of the G-Spot produces razor-sharp effects for spectators to see and read from a distance.
“The light SGM can deliver is fantastic. Those G-Spots are magical; they display the words with such brightness and sharpness. We needed a weatherproof luminaire for this three-week period, and with the G-Spot we got exactly that. In addition, we also got a LED solution ensuring that we maintain the power consumption at a low level,” says Søndergaard.
Owing to the London Literature Festival also taking place at the same time, the melting pot of The Southbank Centre will be enveloped by words both inside and outside.

Romania - Acclaimed DJ David Guetta used the Claypaky Scenius Spot as the exclusive lighting fixture in his festival rig at the launch of Romania's inaugural TimeShift held at Bucharest's Romexpo arena in July.
Guetta's set design comprised four pieces of automated truss forming a large diamond shape that was rigged with 24 Scenius Spot fixtures.
"TimeShift's main stage rig was an adaptation of Guetta's touring rig," says Bogdan Gradisteanu, technical manager of Marbo Trade, Claypaky's official Romanian distributor. Marbo Trade worked alongside rental house Bivolul and ASC Systems to supply the festival's entire lighting package.
Providing keylight from the sides of the main stage were 16 Claypaky B-EYE K20s. "We selected the K20s because of the fixture's advanced versatility, beamshaper and CTO," explains Gradisteanu. The award-winning LED hybrid Wash, Beam and FX light was rigged in two lines of four on either side of the stage interspersed with Claypaky Sharpys. By alternating the two fixtures, the TimeShift team created varying textures of light onstage, whilst ensuring that the artists performing remained visible.
"The Sharpys are known as an industry standard in lightweight beam lights and are very popular fixtures in Romania due to their powerful, sharp beam and high output," says Gradisteanu. "To create depth to the stage we positioned them across eight pieces of horizontal truss, split four either side." The fixtures' beams reached out into the audience to create a high-impact light show.

France - L-Acoustics and French theme park Puy du Fou have signed a privileged partnership agreement, joining the Puy du Fou Club of Partners.
The partnership between L-Acoustics and the Puy du Fou represents the culmination of more than 10 years of collaboration between the two organisations. The first L-Acoustics system at the Puy du Fou was installed in 2000 for the Gallo-roman Stadium. The Netherlands - Elation Europe gathered lighting professionals for a PRO Theme Day, a day of seminars and discussions on relevant industry topics and technological developments.
Held on 10 October at the company's European HQ in Kerkrade, the event featured various presentations including a talk by Ola Melzig, head of production for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest.
Elation Europe sales & marketing manager Marc Librecht said: “Thank you to everyone who shared a sensational PRO Theme Day with us. It was really a big success and perhaps the best PRO Theme Day we’ve ever had. Ola was as informative and entertaining as ever and our guests came away with a lot of valuable knowledge. Everybody’s Talking - A new musical about a teenage boy who wants to be a drag queen has scooped two theatre awards. Everybody's Talking About Jamie won best musical production at the UK Theatre Awards, with its star John McCrea named best musical performer. The UK Theatre Awards reward the best stage shows outside London. The musical has songs by Dan Gillespie Sells, lead singer with pop band The Feeling, and a script and lyrics by writer Tom MacRae.
The show's West End transfer begins at the Apollo Theatre in London on 6 November. Other UK Theatre Awards winners included Narvik by Lizzie Nunnery, which was named best new play; and Joseph Millson, who won best performance in a play for his role in the Royal Shakespeare Company's The Rover. The Who's Tommy picked up the prize for best touring production, while Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse artistic director Gemma Bodinetz won best director for successfully reviving the Everyman's repertory company.

UK - PRG has appointed Caroline Hill and Mark Davies to its UK TV & Film account management team.
Caroline joins from Panalux Broadcast and Events where, for five years, she oversaw the delivery of a diverse range of events including fashion shows, television series, rigging for feature films, and, most recently, the lighting and rigging elements of the factual show World War One Remembered: Passchendaele for the BBC. She is now based in PRG’s Covent Garden, London office.
Caroline is an addition to the already bolstered TV & Film account management team that welcomed Mark Davies earlier this year. Since joining PRG as a lighting project manager over 10 years ago, Mark went on to head up his department before moving into this current account management role.

The waterproof and dustproof Aqua 350 Beam moving head features a 350W lamp (6800K colour temperature), and thanks to its advanced optical system delivers a precise, tight and powerful 2.1° parallel beam. This makes it suitable for all outdoor situations, particularly where an outdoor searchlight and big air looks are required.
The fixture is fully-featured as would be expected, and includes 12 dichroic colours (including CTO and White), two Gobo Wheels (one fixed and one rotating) and three prisms. The fixed wheel contains 16 gobos plus open and the rotating wheel 12 interchangeable gobos plus open. The three prisms offer eight-facet, 16-facet and linear, with bi-directional rotation plus CTO, Frost and Open.

UK - More than 45,000 music fans attended this year’s Wild Life Festival and Digital Insanity used Hippotizer Media Servers to help direct visuals throughout the two-day run. The resulting ‘all-LED wall’ seamlessly integrated with performances from acts including Fatboy Slim, Hannah Wants, David Rodigan, Disclosure, Maya Jane Coles and Gorgon City.
Launched in 2015 by Disclosure and Rudimental, Wild Life has quickly become one of the South East’s most highly anticipated music gatherings. Occupying the open expanse at Brighton City Airport – formerly Shoreham Airport – the venue offers the organisers plenty of space in which to create, as well as host thousands of revellers.
Digital Insanity secured the welcomed task and for a third year provided playback for the festival. The UK-based video solutions provider called on Hippotizer’s playback power to harness its video design. Running a Hippotizer V4 Karst Media Server, Digital Insanity created a stunning frontage comprising a 4K canvas of 8mm LED, delivering a look, big and bold enough to work in Wild Life’s capacious surroundings.
Richard Bagshaw from Digital Insanity, has an extensive design portfolio and he is a long-time Hippotizer user. Reflecting on Wild Life 2017, Richard said: “I’ve been using Hippotizer for parties for over 15 years now. UK - HSL supplied lighting, trussing and rigging equipment to the two main arenas at the 2017 Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) for event producer and artistic director Nadia Raibin and her company, The Production Team.
Nadia and The Production Team have been involved with HOYS for over 20 years, bringing together the best imaginative and technical solutions. Their brief to HSL included providing theatrical lighting for a number of equestrian-based entertainment and display acts as well as lighting for the main international show-jumping competitions, working hunter and driving classes.
Nadia explained that when she first decided to bring a rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere and ‘entertainment experience’ to the main International Arena – there was some trepidation from the horse fraternity!
“This is the pinnacle of the horsing calendar so the idea of adding a lighting spectacle and specially selected popular music to displays was originally met with some hesitancy! However, thankfully, 20 years on, it’s now as much a part of the overall visitor expectations and show presentation aesthetic as watching some of the finest horses and riders compete at the highest equestrian levels!
Nadia is very proud of how they changed the face of the Horse of the Year Show, and with that, the role of technical suppliers became even more involved and crucial.

Europe - Robert Juliat’s Lancelot followspots are joining Ed Sheeran for his 187-date world tour.
Supplied by UK-based lighting hire company Lights Control Rigging (LCR), the two Lancelot followspots were specified for the tour by production designer, Mark Cunniffe, who has worked with Sheeran as lighting and production designer since the star first broke onto the music scene in 2011.
Robert Juliat’s Lancelot is a 4000W HTI followspot designed for very long throw applications, with a 2°- 5° zoom and an innovative optical train that delivers an extremely flat beam and improves on the power of its smaller counterparts. It was clear Cunniffe needed a quality fixture to pick out the singer to his best advantage against the massive, video-heavy set that surrounds him.
“I chose the Lancelots for a number of reasons,” says Cunniffe. “Firstly, I love the optics of the Robert Juliat products which guarantee a flat field and good output. Secondly, the Lancelot is always a rock solid followspot to take on tour. It is great to be able to travel with the lamp in situ in the spot and, with 187 dates, we needed something we could trust to be truly durable.”

UK - Audio-visual integrator Design AV Europe cooperated with AMS Acoustics and sound reinforcement manufacturer Nexo on the new sound system for the recently-renovated Winter Gardens Pavilion in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset.
Design AV Europe was contracted to provide audio and video technology in four areas of the Pavilion: the ballroom, the adjacent bar and restaurant, the reception, and the College reception. Damien Orritt of Design AV approached Nexo to supply the audio system for the ballroom/concert hall, designed to work in any one of five audio scenarios: speech, dinners and table-seated events; live band and concert-type events; a ballroom mode with sound only on the dancefloor; and a full DJ mode with sound on the dancefloor and the promenade.
The central space of the Pavilion is the unusual oval-shaped ballroom, with a raised promenade encircling the sunken floor, under a domed roof. Huge floor to ceiling windows ring the space, which can accommodate 450 people in a variety of layouts.
London-based AMS Acoustics was keen to work on the electro-acoustic tuning of the project, as Helen Goddard explains. “This is not an easy space to put loudspeakers into. It has been designed with a natural acoustic which allows a band to be heard all across the dancefloor. The elliptical shape of the room has two distinct axes, and the domed roof was focussing sound back down into the room. There was even a stunning ‘flutter echo’, which is a very rare event!”

Thailand - Mahajak Development recently installed a multi-zone distributed audio system by Harman Professional Solutions at Vana Nava Jungle Water Park.
Located on eight acres outside of Hua Hin, Thailand, Vana Nava is Asia’s first ‘water jungle’ and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.
In order to provide excellent sound quality for background music and announcements across a wide range of facilities and attractions, developer Proud Real Estate hired Mahajak Development to design and install a complete Harman networked multi-zone audio solution throughout the entire park.
“The project required a great number of loudspeakers, and the Harman constant-voltage speakers enabled us to extend the number of outputs and minimize power loss over long speaker cable runs,” said Roengrith Jantarima, project manager, Mahajak Development. “The park has been up and running smoothly for five years now, and we continue to provide Vana Nava with technical support and maintenance. Thanks to the durability and seamless integration of the Harman solutions, we haven’t had to replace anything due to equipment failure. The park’s audio system sounds as good today as the day it was opened.”
The system installed by Mahajak Development includes JBL loudspeakers, Crown amplifiers, Soundcraft mixers and BSS digital audio processors. USA - Canadian superstar Celine Dion’s lighting designer Yves Aucoin has added Robe’s new MegaPointe multi-purpose moving light fixtures to the rig for her popular Celine show at the Colosseum, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas. This is the first live concert show for MegaPointe in North America.
The Grammy Award-winning artist plays around 70 shows a year in Las Vegas in a series of three-week stints, and tours other territories in between.
Yves has worked with her since 1989, and Montreal based lighting supplier Solotech, represented by Richard Lachance and François Desjardins, has also been involved since Celine’s shows first started carrying a production.
Yves jumped at the chance to add MegaPointes to the Vegas spectacle! He likes to keep the long running residency looking fresh by introducing new elements.
The 4,296 capacity Colosseum was inspired by the architecture of ancient and contemporary Rome and has been in operation since 2003, when it first opened with a showcase of Celine Dion’s residency show Celine in Las Vegas - Opening Night Live … Yves recalls the event extremely well, and at that point he says they had around 180 fixtures in the theatre.
Some of these luminaires are still there, but over the years other visiting artists have added to the rig, so there are now around 300 fixtures in the house rig, the very latest of which are the 22 x MegaPointes.

USA - KDKB 93.3 radio celebrated alternative music with a star-studded Dia De Los ALT show at the Mesa Amphitheatre.
Featuring Top Ten alternative recording artists from around the world, like New York’s Bleachers, London’s Bishop Briggs, and Denmark’s New Politics, the event served up a nightlong smorgasbord of music done in a seemingly endless array of quirky and highly individualistic styles.
John Garberson of Creative BackStage reflected this quixotic music in light as it wove its way through a free-flowing stream of creative interpretations. Aiding him in this undertaking were his assistant LDs Rita Assi and Chris Brodman, as well as a very flexible rig that featured Chauvet Professional fixtures.
Key to creating this immersive visual flow were the rig’s eight Maverick MK2 Spot moving fixtures. Flown four apiece on midstage and upstage truss, the 440-Watt luminaires filled a wide range of roles for the Creative BackStage team, from backlighting and casting specials on performers, to engaging the crowd with audience lighting, to aerial effects, to underscoring ballyhoo moments with colourful crossing patterns.
“The Mavericks always give us a lot of options with their rotating gobos, colour wheels and nice zoom range,” said Garberson. “Having eight of them set up on two rows of truss created a lot of depth on stage. Plus, their output is very intense, more than up to the task of handling a 5,000-person venue like Mesa Amp.”
