USA - On 25 September, the multi-platinum artists Train pulled into the historic Radio City Music Hall in NYC for an album release show in support the band's seventh studio album Bulletproof Picasso. As the production team prepared the design of the show, lighting designer Brock Hogan decided that since the band was releasing their newest album, he wanted to use one of the lighting industry's newest automated luminaires. So working with longtime tour provider LMG Touring, Hogan specified 10 VL4000 Spot luminaires from Philips Vari-Lite.

"The show at Radio City Music Hall was part of a one-off performance series dedicated to promoting the release of the band's latest album," began Hogan. "For these types of shows I have a standard plot, but since it's a new album, I wanted to use a new fixture. I had an opportunity to see the VL4000 Spot at a factory demo in

Czech Republic - The O2 Arena in Prague is the latest large-format multipurpose venue to embrace Nexo's Geo S12-ST sound reinforcement systems, high-output long-throw loudspeakers developed specially for stadium and arena use.

The venue needed to replace its existing PA system installed 10 years ago, a point source system that was, by the venue's own admission, under-specified and under-powered. The brief required a complete new PA/VA system to provide information and emergency announcements as well as music: also the new system needed to integrate easily into the Arena's existing systems, and to represent good value for money.

UK - Full production and solutions provider Hawthorn was the first UK company to invest in Robe's new Big Multi-Functional Luminaire (BMFL) Spot moving light fixture - and the first event for their newest lighting purchase was the Pink Ribbon Ball, staged in the majestic Central Hall of the Natural History Museum in London in support of the Breast Cancer Campaign.

The prestigious and highly acclaimed social event - now in its 20th year - was this year hosted by TV presenter Kate Thornton. A gala dinner featured performances by the Pink Ribbon Ball house band, aerialist trio La Luna, magic from Chicks With Tricks, while Brit Award winning artist Lisa Stansfield topped a memorable evening's entertainment.

He is one of the country's top gospel artists, and his credits include several gold and platinum albums, dozens of awards and nominations, and numerous high-profile performances, including a performance at the White House in celebration of Black Music Month.

The Chicago branch of Advanced Systems & Technologies (AST) designed and installed the new system, which centres on Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers and subwoofers for the main house system, the delay system, and on-stage monitoring.

USA - Denison High School in Denison, Texas recently completed a new 300,000sq.ft building to accommodate its 1,250-plus students. Although packed with the latest in academic technology and the sort of architectural features that both provide comfort and encourage learning, the new building faced cost overruns and a budgeting challenge that required creative thinking on the part of its subcontractors.

Among them was a plan put forward by local A/V integrator Batts Audio, Video & Lighting to jettison a 70-volt announcement/bell system (and all the expensive conduit it would require) for a distributed amplifier system running a 25-volt announcement/bell system. Based around eight 8-channel Ashly Audio ne8250.25pe Network Amplifiers with built-in Protea DSP processing, Batts AV&L gave Denison a reliable, high-quality system for a fraction of the cost of the proposed 70-volt system.

USA - Wireless intercom systems play a vital supporting role in day-to-day communications within many production and broadcast operations facilities around the world. Traditionally most wireless intercoms are low-power, full-duplex, belt-pack type systems utilized within studios and theatres. When extended range operations are needed at outside broadcast venues such as motor sport circuits and golf courses for example, few commercially available "high-power wireless intercom" options exist posing significant challenges to sports and news broadcasters.

For more than 25 years Raycom has been custom manufacturing "high-power" 2-way radio based PMSE / remote broadcast wireless intercom systems that fit the worldwide dynamic applications of outside broadcast operations.

Switzerland - Laserworld has announced the release of the new RTI PIKO RGB 11 Pure Diode as laser light system for high professional applications.

The PIKO RGB 11 PD has a guaranteed output power of 10W RGB after aperture and is equipped with diode laser sources only. This ensures a great, linear colour fading behaviour and makes the unit suitable for professional projections as well as for smooth beam shows. The compact PIKO-housing makes the PIKO RGB 11 PD suitable for touring applications, rentals as well as for fixed installations.

Due to the beam specifications of ca. 4mm/<1.0mrad (full angle) it is possible to use small scanner mirrors on the Pangolin ScannerMax 506 Galvos (Standard ScannerMax, optional XScan are available at no extra costs) and thus reduce inertia - which allows for very good scan rates with 35kpps@8° ILDA.

Germany - Experienced production designer Cosmo Wilson fondly remembers the first time he used GLP impression fixtures: it was on AC/DC's 2008-2009 Black Ice Tour, where he lit the memorable giant train set-piece, an iconic element of the show. "I found that the saturation was stellar," he recalls. Prior to that he had been strictly a traditional 'PAR Can LD' - critical of the look of the early LED sources and throw distances.

Six years on, and with Foreigner and Styx embarking on a joint headline tour, LED technology has evolved a long way. For Foreigner's UK dates earlier in the year he deployed impression RZ120 Zoom to light the 'Foreigner' sign. This allowed him to make visual comparisons with his favoured conventional pars on his way to moving up to the impression X4 series - GLP's current touring workhorse.

UK - On October 14 Tate Modern's Turbine Hall opened its doors to the largest work ever created by renowned American sculptor Richard Tuttle. Entitled I don't know - the Weave of Textile Language, Tuttle's piece combines vast swathes of fabrics to create a massive winged sculpture. Weighing in at 25 tonnes and measuring 50m long, production manager Jim Leaver faced the challenge of how to suspend the artwork - not just safely over the heads of thousands of visitors, but also to create the illusion that the piece was floating effortlessly in the air.

Leaver, who was appointed by Tate Modern to oversee the construction of the exhibit, brought Unusual Rigging on board to help develop a solution and to fulfil Tuttle's idea that those visiting the exhibition should "...feel like they're in heaven".

Leon Ingram, production rigger at Unusual, said, "This was cer
