USA - Thommy Hall of Barbizon Phoenix describes the outdoor lighting system at the city's new America West Arena as "the ultimate mega-rig of all time." Integral components of the "mega-rig" are 16 Vari*Lite automated lighting fixtures - eight VL3000 Spot luminaires and eight VL1000Arc units.
The luminaires are located outside the arena in the Paseo, a 400ft x 65ft area where visitors gather before and after events. A perforated steel canopy above the area serves as a projection surface: four 12ft x 9ft glass kiosks suspended 10ft off the ground each house two VL3000 Spot luminaires, two VL1000 fixtures and a video projection system. Each kiosk also has its own enclosed three-ton air conditioning unit. Barbizon provided the Vari*Lite automated fixtures to Genesis Audio Systems for the project.
Jim Jorgensen, owner of Genesis Audio Systems, was originally brought in as a vendor to provide materials, and was later asked to act as consultant and project manager. Jorgensen then sold the architect and designers on the technology and function for the area. "The planners wanted the area to be more entertainment focused," Jorgensen explained. "They wanted to give it sort of a sports bar look, and wanted it to have a dynamic feel, not just become a giant Lava Lamp."
"I went with the Vari*Lite fixtures because I think they are the best moving fixtures on the market," Jorgensen continued. "The combination of zoom and gobo wheels made it the right choice for this application."
The biggest challenge of the projec
USA - The Kansas and Missouri departments of transportation began operating the Kansas City Scout traffic congestion management and traveler information system in January this year. Designed to provide freeway travelers with the latest in technology and communication to help make their drive safer, faster and more manageable, the system's elements include traffic sensors, surveillance cameras, electronic message boards, and a highway advisory radio system.
Traffic information from these elements feeds into Scout's Operations Center located in Lee's Summit, MO. Operations staff monitor traffic on 75 miles of Kansas City's most congested freeways; and respond to freeway incidents by notifying the appropriate authorities to clear the roadway and keep traffic flowing as freely as possible.
Scout's traffic operations staff use information from its cameras and sensors to launch a comprehensive response plan tailored to each traffic situation. The response might include dispatching motorist assistance services; notifying and co-ordinating emergency services; creating electronic messages along affected routes; sending updated information to local media; and broadcasting traffic updates over the Internet.
Central to the Kansas City Scout traffic management system is the Control Room and an Electrosonic video display system. The display consists of 12 52" SVGA Clarity cubes. Graphic and video images are managed on the cube display by Electrosonic Vector processing.

The Netherlands - Dutch hire company A.J. Kooijmans Audio is the first European company to place an order for 16 Linex systems, Sound Projects' new line-array. The company already had long experience with the Sound Projects 4 (SP-4) hybrid line array system, and after a comprehensive market analysis and several live gigs with different FOH technicians, Kooijmans was ready to opt for the Linex. A first order was placed for a medium-sized rig of 16 Linex systems. Kooijmans already owns over 120 self-powered Sound Projects systems including a major SP-4 rig and is one of the fastest growing rental companies in the Netherlands.
Second in line is rental company Spot & Speaker, located in Utrecht. House supplier of the European Darts Championships and specialising in major events, Spot & Speaker also placed an order for 16 Linex systems. Dennis Bos, managing director, said: "Initially we rented well respected Canadian and French line-arrays, until some day one of our engineers suggested to try out a new Sound Projects array. Although reluctant (because most of our gigs include live national television broadcast) we followed this suggestion and quickly made up our mind. In fact it became quickly apparent that we were spending so much money on renting the Linex system, that it was only common sense to buy our own. We felt that Linex could not only compete with the major brands on all audio qualities, for the achievable loudness it is also smaller and lighter."

UK / USA - According to acoustic specialist Arup, it is now possible for the first time to 'hear' a building even before the foundations have been laid. The company's Arup SoundLab is an immersive listening environment used as a new acoustic design tool to allow the auralization of any building, whether existing or virtual. With listening rooms in London and New York and shortly in Melbourne, it has already had an impact, say Arup, on the design of concert venues, opera houses, studios, airports, railway stations, offices, museums and galleries.
Created by measuring more than 70 prestigious concert halls and opera houses and using over 15 years' research to calibrate 3D models and validate the accuracy of a predicted sound environment, the SoundLab enables the listener to experience the sound of a space or potential space as never before. Listeners can compare the same orchestra playing Handel's Water Music in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, or in the Musikverein, Vienna, fully enjoying and understanding the subtle differences between the acoustics of each hall. They can also listen to a new concert hall design and compare it directly to the world's best concert halls.
The technique can also be applied to a wide range of acoustic design issues commonly found in buildings, enabling the client to understand the problem and determine the investment needed for reaching the optimum solution. It is possible to optimize the speech intelligibility of a sound system in a large reverberant space, listen to the reduction in aircraft or road traffic noise using various types
Germany - Frankfurt's ProLight&Sound exhibition closed its doors on 3 April after registering a 30 % increase in visitor numbers, say the organizers. This is the largest number of visitors ever recorded in the 10 years since it was launched. Over the four days of the fair, 26,735 trade visitors - including more than 9,000 industry professionals from outside Germany.
"The fair was very well attended, business people have been able to make the contacts they want and, with the innovative segments of media technology and systems integration, a new, future-oriented growth market is opening up for the sector," said Florian von Hofen, chief executive of Germany's Association for Professional Light, Sound and Event Technology (VPLT), summing up the fair.
The mood of the exhibition appeared to be indicative of a new upswing in the sector: according to the organizers' research, the level of exhibitor satisfaction was around 12% higher than last year, with 86% of exhibitors reporting themselves to be very satisfied with the course of business at the fair. The research also shows an increase in the number of transactions concluded during the fair - reported by more than half of the company representatives polled from all segments and, on average, is up five percent on last year's event. The news was also good from the visitors, 93% of whom were satisfied with their visit to the fair.

China - Turbosound reports that over 50 of its products - including some 32 QLight systems - have been installed in the People's Great Hall at Wenzhou in eastern China. Handled by Turbosound's exclusive distributor for the Chinese territories, Hong Kong-based Phoenix Audio and Lighting Technology, the project was designed by Mac Lo, the company's technical director.
Housing five separate conference spaces, the Wenzhou People's Great Hall is a new purpose-built and highly prestigious venue, and the first of several government projects planned for the region. Bordering the East China Sea, the city of Wenzhou represents the economic, cultural and political centre in the southern part of Zhejiang Province. Principally used for high-profile government-level conferences, requiring clear, intelligible speech reinforcement, the Great Hall is also utilized for live music events, particularly during celebrations such as the Chinese New Year.
Mac Lo's system design for the venue's Main Conference Hall included 12 TQ-315 units and two THL-828 sub-bass enclosures as the core system, with four TCS-35 and TCS-10 units, and four TFM-212 monitors. System control in the main hall is via a Turbosound LMS-D6. Six TQ-315 loudspeakers form the basis of the International Conference Hall's system, with two TFM-212 monitors. Eight TQ-310 systems, along with two TCS-12M units, have been deployed in a separate multi-purpose hall. The News Briefing Hall also features TQ-310 enclosures, with six units installed, while the smallest space - the Conference Hall for All Districts and Counties -
UK - The Haunch of Venison is one of Salisbury's oldest pubs and features small intimate dining areas amongst oak beams and winding stairwells. Owner Rupert Willcocks wanted to enhance the ambiance within the building's unique structure, adding to the overall dining experience for his guests.
As part of the electrical refurbishment led by electrical consultant Kevin Flynn, Zero 88 supplied a ChilliNet control system to the historic tavern. Six Chilli 410's and three 5 Button Brass control panels were used throughout the three levels of public space including the bar, separate drinking areas and the dining rooms. The system allows for the levels of each space to be individually controlled, with preset scenes easily accessed by staff using the push button control panels.
Willcocks explained: "In a restaurant environment it is essential to maintain an appropriate ambience whatever the time of day. Since we have refurbished our dining areas we have doubled our turnover, and I have no doubt that the ChilliNet controlled lighting system has contributed enormously to this."
The Haunch of Venison pub and restaurant, dates from the 14th century and has a colourful past including acting as a brothel in the 1700's and has its own selection of ghosts! Between 11pm and midnight a grey lady ghost is often seen from the window overlooking the graveyard of St Thomas' Church. It was also here that a cheating card player had his hand amputated and his agitated ghost has often been seen.
All Zero 88 products were purchased through Stagecraft, Salisbury.

USA - Well-known for his past work with Primus, as well as the current line-up of Guns n' Roses, drummer Brain (Bryan Mantia) has been pursuing a parallel career in computer music and beat programming for the past few years. Using two portable Metric Halo setups, Brain is able to bring his programming talents to bear on multiple projects simultaneously.
"I do a lot of programming for albums," Brain acknowledges. "I just did a load of stuff for the new Vanessa Carlton album. I also just did an album with Buckethead, the guitarist from Guns n' Roses. His new album has a lot of programming."
Brain now uses a pair of G4 Titanium laptops. Looking for a high quality digital audio interface, he reports that friends in the industry, such as producers Michael Beinhorn and Roy Thomas Baker, recommended that he check out Metric Halo. "Everybody told me about the Metric Halo MIO, thatit's a great, portable eight-in, eight-out mixer with DSP."
Brain tried the Metric Halo Mobile I/O against his then current interface and was blown away. "The Metric Halo destroyed it," he reports, "as far as the low end, the high end, and the quality of sound. Right away, it was like someone had taken a blanket off the speakers. It's not like you have to be an audiophile - it's something where even my mom could tell the difference!"
"I ended up buying that," he continues, "then I purchased the ULN-2, so I have two portable units and two separate systems."
As Brain observes: "The system is basically in a backpack, s
Iraq - Capital Productions' contract with Combined Services Entertainment (CSE) - which provides entertainment to HM Forces serving worldwide - last year extended to Iraq.
With a high number of British troops stationed in Basra, the shows tend to be more complex. Here Capital created the staging, barriers and ground support system, supplied the backline kit and sub-contracted the lighting from Brian Leitch's company, Siyan.
Capital's Paul Timmins told us: "I'm always striving to improve on the equipment and I desperately wanted to use the Martin line array system. It's the first time these premium speakers have been in the sand."
An array of eight W8L enclosures and six ground-stacked WSX subs were positioned either side of the stage, supported by a further six Martin Audio W2s for barrier fills. With air support provided by the Royal Air Force, some 24 tons of equipment was flown out from Brize Norton on C17 heavy lift aircraft during the week preceding the show. "The first time we worked in Iraq we suffered from sand being blown into the equipment," continued Timmins. "But now we build walls of ISO containers behind the stage, which serves as a wind and sand barrier."Aided by the ISO wall, the Martin Audio system performed perfectly. "We had an audience of 5,000 standing - and the sound was fantastic," Timmins said.
UK - SSE hire has just taken delivery of two Midas Heritage 4000 monitor consoles to add to its already considerable Midas inventory. Already the biggest Midas owner in the UK, the addition of a further two Heritage 4000s serves underline SSE's continuing commitment not just to Midas but to large format analogue console technology. In addition to the Heritage 4000s, SSE has also ordered three Midas Verona's.
SSE's John Penn comments: "We have a hugely busy summer season in front of us, and we needed more consoles. We were going to invest in more Heritage 3000s, but when the Heritage 4000 came out, it made more sense for us to invest in a desk that has even more facilities and the extra capacity to handle heavy-duty monitor applications, but can still go out in the place of a Heritage 3000 if necessary. And of course, it's a Midas, and Midas has proved since time immemorial to be a really solid investment. That continues to be the case, even now that digital consoles have started to make their mark and gain in popularity."
Midas and Klark Teknik UK sales manager Richard Ferriday agrees: "Customers can see that there is still rentability in large format analogue consoles. In fact, the world's most requested console is a Heritage 3000, which tells you a lot. It's true to say that the market got tense about the advent of digital technology when it first appeared, and reined in on their spending to see what would happen. However, people have now relaxed and our sales reflect this. For now, most customers accept that digital technology is a different bea
UK - Firework display specialist Rocket Pyrotechnics has announced the acquisition of fireworks display company SWPF. Paul Franklin, MD of Rocket Pyrotechnics said: "Due to Rocket's rapid growth and success, we have been looking for other fireworks companies to acquire as part of our expansion plans. We were particularly interested in SWPF as its infrastructure could easily be integrated into Rocket's and we felt that John Kennet, (MD of SWPF), would be a great attribute to our team."
Rocket's forte is fireworks displays choreographed to live music, where as SWPF's forte is fireworks displays choreographed to pre-recorded music, using the Fire One firing systems. This combination makes Rocket a powerful player in the pyro-musical field. USA - VLPS Lighting Services recently provided a full lighting package for the nationally televised awards gala honouring those who help and improve children's lives. Hosted by Children's Miracle Network's co-founders Marie Osmond and John Schneider, the annual awards ceremony was held over two evenings in the ballroom of Walt Disney World's Coronado Springs Resort. Utah-based Cornerstone Technologies provided technical services for the event.
"In previous years, the show depended heavily on a conventional rig with 3K and 5K Fresnels," said lighting designer Matt Endicott of Cornerstone. "For the first time, I requested a full line of Vari-Lite products, complete with VL 3000 Spot luminaires, VL 2000 Spot luminaires, VL 1000 TS, VL5 Wash luminaires, and VL6 Spot luminaires, because we were really blown away by the performance and flexibility of these lights. The set presented some challenges for lighting design, I usually prefer an asymmetrical look but this set had staggered, co-centric archways decreasing in width from front to back. However, the archways did provide a great sail for me to paint with the VL 5's."
He continued: "I was especially impressed with how well the VL3000's performed. I used them as backlight in several situations and was able to zoom wide to 60 degrees due to the low trim height. Because it was being broadcast for television, I used the VL 1000 tungstens to balance everything to 32 and rendered a true colour. I also wanted to have some dramatic audience shots so I built four eighty-foot trusses over the audience
UK - Lighting and sound sales and installation specialists Lighting Logic has designed, specified, supplied and installed a complete lighting system for the television studio at The Brit School in Croydon, Surrey.
Lighting Logic's Mick Cocker worked closely with Brit School technical manager Andrew Smith to design and specify exactly the right equipment for the studio. The space is used constantly by students from the School's Media Department for project creation, and also by students and staff from other courses. Cocker has worked on two previous Brit School installation projects.
A major feature of the installation is a flexible Manfrotto IFF Top Rail advanced studio suspension grid system. This tracking mechanism is movable, allowing all overhead lighting fixtures to be moved around the studio quickly and easily without using cumbersome and complex access gear. Effectively, the IFF allows the moving of the grid to the saturation point or area of the studio where it is needed. It was the obvious choice for a heavily used multi-purpose space like this confirms Mick Cocker. Lighting Logic also supplied a quantity of ARRI Junior 1KW fresnels and Photon Beard 110W dimmable fluorescents.
For control, they specified the broadcast standard LSC iPRO dimmers, an LSC DMX distribution system, and an LSC maXim 24 channel lighting console. The project also entailed supply of a Doughty tab track and a full set of drapes, curtains, and other assorted soft goods. The main technical brief for the installation was that it should be highly versatile and easy to use by a wide a

Japan - Tokyo City Keiba is a horseracing track located in Ooi, Tokyo, one of four built in the 1950s in central Japan. Since its opening, Tokyo City Keiba has entertained huge numbers of fans and, since 1986, has made a great success of its night time Twinkle Race.
With the help of Martin color changing projection, Tokyo City Keiba is continuing to change the horse track's entertainment concept. In 2003, a new entertainment facility called L-Wing was opened with restaurants, indoor gardens and color projection from Martin Architectural Exterior luminaries enriching the gamblers' visit. One result has been that women are now starting to visit the racetrack to enjoy the atmosphere.
At dusk L-Wing delights the crowd with colour changing projection, and during the Twinkle Race L-Wing paints the paddock in soft shades projected by several exterior lights. Delicate colors, kept discrete in order not to disturb the horses and the race itself, are projected across the area. The view through the paddock is reportedly spectacular.
After the main lighting scheme ends, shorter light shows are held every 40 minutes until all visitors have exited the track. The Lighting design was created by Reiko Chikada Lighting Design Inc and includes: Eight Exterior 600 color changers, installed on each fan of the L-Wing roof with another six located on the side of the building displaying soft graduated colors that match the structure's design. Additionally, three Exterior 200 luminaries are installed on the third floor terrace. The Martin fixtures were supplied by Martin Japan.

UK - Entertainment technology specialists Kelco UK Limited believe it is set to bend the collective ear of the UK clubbing scene with its most recent sound installation in Nottingham. Stealth is the latest club of note to open anywhere in the UK and aims to revitalize a club scene which many have claimed is on the verge of stalling. Details of the club and its exact style and content are a closely guarded secret.
Kelco managing director David Kelland commented: "I obviously can't comment on any other aspect of the club, but I can guarantee that the sound system that we have designed and installed is as good as it gets. There is no way that words and specifications alone will be able to do justice to the systems; it really is something that has to be experienced to appreciate what has been achieved."
The two main floors of Stealth will see the first UK installation of Funktion-One's new 'Dance Stack', powered by the latest generation of amplification from MC2. "In a dance club it is important that even though sound levels are high, they don't fatigue the listener. Funktion-One sound equipment is designed to enable a venue to deliver an experience that is ultimately exciting and exhilarating, but nevertheless allows customers to stay longer, spend more and therefore improve the venues turnover. The contract with Stealth is a result of Kelco, Funktion-One and industry specialist Jason Bacon working together to fully understand Stealth's objectives and then specify the best possible solution. It's the only way to work with clients," added Kelland.
