USA - VLPS Lighting Services provided a full lighting package to Footstar's National District Managers' meetings - a corporate tour which traveled to each of the company's regional divisions (West, South, and North) with a customized set and full event production designed and provided by Available Light Productions.
"We've been working with Footstar for about eight years, but this year they brought us in at the very beginning to plan the technical and creative elements of their event, including picking out the meeting's theme and the different venues in Las Vegas, Chicago, and Orlando," said Kirk Garreans, principal of ALP. "I designed the lighting, along with Matt Lemmon of True Light Productions, to feature a variety of presentations from corporate speeches to panel discussions, award ceremonies and musical entertainment."
"I chose to use VLPS because I've always received excellent support and customer service. Having VLPS offices around the country is a big bonus if I need parts or other service while I'm on the road," commented Garreans. "No equipment is perfect, but the manner with which I am taken care of by VLPS is unsurpassed by any other lighting vendor I have ever used and that makes all the difference in the world on a touring show, or any event, for that matter!"
To go along with this year's theme of 'We Make The Difference', the set was designed to resemble a giant jigsaw puzzle, along with two side projection screens and a centre panoramic screen image created by using the Folsom BlendPro system. "We
UK - Stage Electrics has moved its Central Stores operation. To ensure the minimum disruption to customers, the stores closed at lunchtime on Saturday and re-opened at 08:00 Monday morning - by which time 4,500 product lines were moved. "I have been planning this move for eight months," said distribution manager Darren Williams, "and it has gone like clockwork, thanks to everyone's help."
Stage Electrics Central Stores is now housed in 17,000sq.ft with 5,000 linear feet of space. The building holds 320 pallet spaces as well as the store for the expanding contracting installation arm of Stage Electrics. "This new space will allow us to work more effectively," says Dave Friend, the company's central stores manager, "and will revolutionise the way we pick and process orders ensuring we improve the service to our customers. With a Central Stores Team of 9 we hold approximately £1million of sales stock and pick and despatch 200 orders a day for both internal and external customers. We will continue to develop and are planning to operating fully on Barcode within 12 months."

USA - Surprise moves at Texas-based High End Systems (HES) recently have seen the departure of the company's well-known chief technology officer Mike Wood after nine years with the company, as well as other members of the R&D team, and Bill Morris, vice-president of worldwide marketing. The departure of Wood, a former chairman of PLASA in the UK and one of the industry's most respected figures, has caused the most ripples, not least because he is also the current president of ESTA - North America's Entertainment Services & Technology Association.
However, while the industry at large ponders that, High End has announced the other, more positive side of the latest restructuring, which sees the return of company co-founder Richard Belliveau to a full-time role - as chief technology officer - and HES' stated aim of focusing its energies on digital lighting, and lessening its dependence on electro-mechanical products.
Belliveau left HES in 1998, since which time he has served as a consultant to the company, with a focus on intellectual property and patent development. In his new position, Belliveau will concentrate on advancing the development of digital lighting technology, say HES. Of course, the company has already made its mark in this area, with the introduction of the Catalyst system in 2000, which won five industry awards its first year. The DL1 digital light engine and Catalyst v3 Media Server and software debuted late last year, winning awards at PLASA and LDI.
In the company's official statement, which makes no mention of anyone having left the company, CE
The Netherlands - Since its official launch at the end of January, Midas Consoles Holland has made a number of significant console sales, including 20 Venice consoles of different types, five of the new 8-bus Veronas and a 48-channel Heritage 2000. Among the most recent sales was a 48-channel Heritage 1000 to Dutch rental company Van den Berk Stage Equipment.
Van den Berk is active in both concert touring and the festival markets, but specializes particularly in theatre tours, and required a console that would be capable of handling the demands of all three environments. Proprietor Toine Van den Berk compared several brands including a demo console from Midas Consoles Holland before making his choice. "I felt that a digital console was not an option given the still relatively complex nature of the equipment and the fact that the sound quality, in my opinion, still does not compare with that of an analogue console," he said. "However, the Heritage 1000 combines superb audio quality with a broad acceptance in the rental market."

UK - A new nine-screen multiplex cinema has opened at The Kassam Stadium, home to Oxford United Football Club. With two showcase screening rooms (and four of the nine screens running full digital formats), the cinema forms part of the major Ozone Leisure and Entertainment Park, developed at a cost in excess of £25 million by owner Firoz Kassam, and also featuring bingo, bowling lanes, health and fitness centre and restaurant facilities.
The Park is operated by the stadium's owners, Firoka Leisure Group, and the work was completed in just 12 weeks by designers and architects, NBDA Ltd. The audio and projection infrastructure was designed and fitted by cinema specialists, Sound Associates, who chose Cinemecanica projection and a combination of Martin Audio's purpose-designed Screen 4 and Screen 2 loudspeakers, both biamped, Martin Effect 3Rs (for surround sound) and Screen Sub 1A for the low frequencies throughout the complex. The system is powered by a combination of QSC ISA 750 and 450 low impedance power amplifiers, with a quantity of DCM's, QSC's Digital Cinema Monitors providing signal processing and monitor functions in a single integrated system.
Sound Associates' sales and marketing manager, Jerry Murdoch, says that the Martin Audio/QSC combination has proven its worth: "We've been using Martin cinema speakers since they started trailblazing in the cinema market - and QSC cinema amplifiers even longer than that. What we are looking for is high-reliability, high output and lower power."

UK - PA/VA specialist Millbank Electronics has recently supplied Metronet - the company responsible for upgrading and maintaining two thirds of London's Underground network - with their new DsPAC Class D 3U mainframe amplifier.
The DsPAC was specified by Metronet to augment the original Millbank PowerPac system in Bank underground station. Situated in the heart of London's financial district, with more than 45 million passengers passing through each year, Bank is one of the most used underground station in London.
Installed and integrated by London-based contractor Qubic Transportation Systems Ltd, the DsPAC integrated seamlessly to the system, and has dramatically augmented its capacity as a contemporary VA system. Metronet's commercial asset engineer, Neil Wilkinson, commented: "The DsPAC is a superb product. It offers Metronet a powerful tool, which has seamlessly upgraded and enhanced the PA/VA capacity of Bank Station. It benefits from Millbank's superb quality and build and has proved that it is extremely robust. Additionally, by virtue of its compact design, it affords a valuable space/performance ratio plus it is simple to operate, even by non-technical users."
Millbank's new DsPAC has been designed from the ground up at the company's Macclesfield HQ. As well as being a suitable retrofit and an up-grade for the original Millbank PowerPac systems, it is an infinitely configurable modular system, which will accept up to five CDA 250 Class D amplifiers. Millbank reports that a number of other major industrial organizations, including Shell, hav
China - Fujian Broadcast and Television Group is a popular Chinese television station, which broadcasts a wide range of programming and special events. Martin Professional's Shanghai office recently supplied 60 intelligent fixtures for a recent tribute show in celebration of the station's founding.
Lighting designer Zhao Vanan of Fujian Television created a spectacular, contemporary look for the show that was highly complementary to the ultra-modern set design. Behind three large set pieces hung a 12m wide by 10m high wall of lighting that included MAC moving heads, moving mirrors and conventional fixtures.
MAC 2000 Profiles served as backlighting with stage-positioned MAC 2000 Profiles used for pattern projection onto the large set pieces. MAC 600s coloured the scenery from different angles. The large, black, empty space above the stage was solved using a large triangle truss of MACs and conventionals with additional conventionals used as truss warmers. The intelligent fixtures not only allowed for a large variety of looks but their high tech functionality and design fit in ideally with the party theme and futuristic set pieces.

UK - James Thomas' Pixel range LED fixtures are being used to light the stunning Toyo Ito Pavilion sculpture, in a scheme by architectural lighting designers from Cook & Associates Design Consultants (CADC). The Pavilion is a white metal construction designed by the renowned Japanese architect, originally created for an exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in 2002. It's now been installed at the Battersea Power Station site.
Glass panels have been fitted to the previously open elements of the Pavilion. The eye-catching temporary building will now be utilized as the marketing suite promoting the Power Station's redevelopment. The four exterior walls of the Pavilion are now lit with five PixelPAR 90(A)s, fully weatherized architectural fittings. The fixtures are attached to poles, two washing the front wall and one each across the others, and all are positioned to minimize reflections. Some fittings are fitted with LSD (light shaping diffuser) lenses from Physical Optics Corporation in the US, which allow the modification of the 6° Luxeon LED to vary the spread of the beam, giving a more even wash across each fascia.
The plinth running along the bottom of the Pavilion is lit with four more PixelPAR 90(A)s, each shooting horizontally along the foot of each wall. Internally, the Pavilion is lit by five mobile information displays which are effectively white fluorescent light boxes, with an additional individually dimmable fluorescent discreetly added to their tops. This contrasts dramatically with the saturated colours of the exterior and raises the ambient lighting
USA - At its recent meeting, the General Executive Board of International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) voted to contribute $75,000 to the development of the new Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP). IATSE president Thomas C. Short commented: "Assuring safety on the job is of paramount importance to our members. The new certification program is a step toward achieving a more secure working environment for our members."
IATSE's generous donation further demonstrates their significant commitment to safety in the entertainment industry. The organization was formed more than a century ago and is the largest labour union in the entertainment and related industries. Underlining their commitment to , IATSE has appointed Anthony DePaulo (international vice-president), Brian Lawlor (international vice-president and division director of Stagecraft, and Tim Wade (chair of the IATSE Labor/Management Safety Committee) to serve on the Certification Council.

The Netherlands - The Vakbeurs Theater Techniek show which took place in The Hague at the end of January saw the official public launch of Midas Consoles Holland, the new distribution organization for Midas and Klark Teknik products throughout the Netherlands.
Midas Consoles Holland is the brainchild of Axel Nagtegaal of Electric Audio. Electric Audio already distributed Klark Teknik in Holland, but Nagtegaal's vision was to develop a structure that would concentrate exclusively on Midas and Klark Teknik in order to maximise both brands in the Dutch market. "Midas Consoles Holland, although part of Electric Audio, operates entirely independently," explained Nagtegaal. "It has its own very distinct identity including its own dedicated logo, website and personnel, plus a fully stocked showroom and demo facility which we call the Midas Cave. MCH exists exclusively for the sales and support of Midas and Klark Teknik. Unlike most distribution set-ups where many brands from several manufacturers are represented, there is absolutely no affiliation with any other brand. It's almost as if you were buying direct from the factory. Indeed, our strategy is to deliver the same service and the same standards of customer care and support as you would expect direct from Midas and KT themselves."
"We also aim to add value in other ways," he continued. "For example, for customers who do not wish to purchase a console outright, we offer a variety of leasing options and finance packages. We have also developed what we call a 'Service Pack'. This is
UK - LXCO, in conjunction with DLD, created the lighting visuals for the prestigious Olivier Awards, which took place recently at London's Park Lane Hilton Hotel. The awards ceremony brought together some of today's greatest theatrical stars for a celebration of the year's productions. Clive Anderson, aided by the cast of The Rat Pack, presented the awards for the sixth consecutive year. Awards were presented to Eileen Atkins for Best Actress in Honour, Matthew Kelly for Best Actor in Of Mice and Men and Jerry Springer-The Opera for the Best New Musical. The Best Lighting Design Award went to Hugh Vanstone for Pacific Overtures and the inaugural Best Sound Design Award went to Mike Walker for Jerry Springer-The Opera.
LXCO and DLD were asked to create a lighting system based on the design already used for The Rat Pack production at the Strand Theatre, to produce a similar look for the awards. The challenge for the LXCO team was to recreate the look of the West End musical with less equipment, less time and in a smaller space. Director of The Rat Pack, Mitch Sebastian and the cast had developed a good relationship with the LXCO team, headed by LD Mark Wheatley, and trusted them to create the show's look for the awards ceremony, which LXCO completed successfully. Mark commented: "As we have been working on the show, it meant we understood the desired ambience for the numbers performed at the Olivier Awards. We were able to make decisions about the equipment and set that would not affect the integrity of the show's
UK - The growth of the international marketplace, and a significant rise in digital communications, has made the protection and management of Intellectual Property an increasingly important issue for all those investing in design and development. USA / Canada - Linkin' Park's lighting designer, AJ Pen, is using 24 Robe Spot 1200s on the band's massive Meteora 2004 world tour, which is completely sold-out and currently working its way through the US and Canadian legs. Pen has worked with the band for the last 12 months, and they have toured constantly since then in various configurations in support of the Meteora album, which is triple platinum in the US alone.
Pen was introduced to Robe Show Lighting's array of moving lights and the great potential of the Robe Spot 1200 in particular, by Robe America's Randy Wade through Linkin Park's production manager, Jim Digby. This is the first time Pen has used Robe, and the powerful 1200 Spots are proving to be a great creative asset for the show. Six Spot 1200s are deployed on the upstage truss for beam effects, four are used as followspots, 10 are rigged on custom trussing and utilized for specials and cosmetics, and four are placed beneath the stage, shooting up through the downstage grille deck. All are used to produce high-powered hard-edged beams as well as for air texturing and dynamic effects.
Followspots are Pen's top priority during the show. Linkin' Park's two singers, bass and guitar players are all highly energetic performers and are never static for more than a few seconds! These four are currently all covered by both front and rear spots, while the 1200s are used to simulate the followspot 'look' on the DJ and drummer.
Pen also designed the show's video, all of which is run via a Catalyst digital media server from his MA Lighting grandMA lighting d
USA - The United Nations building in New York City became one of the first venues in the US to use the recently launched Midas Verona 8-bus mixing console for its sound reinforcement needs in addition to the new ElectroVoice Plasma powered speaker line for main FOH stacks and delays. New York Audio Service was asked to provide sound reinforcement services for an all-star line-up of jazz legends including Herbie Hancock, Larry Coryell, Terri Lyne Carrington, Nestor Torres and Buster Williams, who performed a special concert for the 'Culture of Peace' benefit at the UN last month.
New York Audio Service founder David Gibson remarked: "The Midas Verona is extremely user-friendly and straightforward. I spent a day with it in the shop, and had no trouble at all in familiarising myself with the board. I actually ran the entire show off the matrix busses, and only used 16-17 of the 32 available inputs. I found the input meter on each channel very helpful, and a real bonus on a console at this price point. The pre-amp section sounds great - super-quiet. There's just no noise in the system at all, plus you've got a rock-solid on-board power supply that's also silent. The Midas Verona, although substantially smaller and, as you'd expect from a desk at this price point, minus some of the bells and whistles of its big brother the Heritage 3000, still sounds like a Midas, and that's the important thing."
David was equally pleased with the performance of the new EV powered Plasma system, particularly given the difficult acoustic characteristics of the room - "ha
Gambia - The New Covenant Worship Centre, part of Abiding Word Ministries (AWM) in Serrekunda, the Gambia, has undergone an upgrade of its audio equipment to meet increasing technical demands. Headed by Pastor Francis Forbes, a well-known national figure, the church is heavily involved in TV and radio broadcast and music production, beyond the capabilities of the existing sound system.
Tim Kemp, director of Hull, UK-based installers Euronis Ltd, was responsible for the specification and installation of the system. The PA was refurbished with Crown amplifiers, Peavey loudspeakers, Alesis outboard devices, Sennheiser mics and a 32-channel Allen & Heath GL2200 mixing console.
The GL2200/32 was chosen for its suitability as a multi-role mixer. Its main function is for live sound reinforcement during services and concerts where the audio requirements include wired and wireless mics for the ministers, a 16-strong choir and a band. However, the desk is also used for multi-track recording due to the Centre's production and broadcast requirements, for which Euronis established a PC-based studio as part of the installation.
The Centre hosts TV and Radio shows, including a weekly national TV broadcast, which has predominantly been a simple piece to camera in the pastor's office. With the increased audio quality, footage from the services can be incorporated. The desk's large number of ins/outs and flexible grouping allows the Centre's sound technicians to provide a separate audio mix for the video crew and also for monitors.

USA - Color Kinetics Inc has announced a string of signage installations for which its LED systems have provided a greater impact than conventionally illuminated signs. Most recently, CKI's ColorBlast units have illuminated the high-profile Washington Mutual beanstalk sign in Times Square - an 80ft tall, three-dimensional sign with a fibreglass exterior that shimmers in varying shades of green. "The visual impact . . . is extraordinary, and Color Kinetics' LED lighting technology played a significant role in bringing our vision to life," said Mike McGraw, director of spectacular development for Clear Channel Spectacolor, who designed the sign along with Washingon Mutual's advertising agency, Sedgwick Rd.
Color Kinetics reports that its LED lighting fixtures are widely used to enhance signage, storefronts, and facades of some of the USA's most recognizable brands, with advertisers, sign builders, and designers increasingly choosing LED illumination in preference to conventional coloured light sources.

UK - One of the leading UK generator suppliers, Powerent - part of the Longville Group - has had a busy couple of years providing silent power to some major film productions. The company's list of credits include this winter's box office success Love Actually staring Hugh Grant. Powerent's silent 1000kW and 500kW generators were used to power an impressive reproduction of a Heathrow departure lounge in Shepperton Studios. Simultaneously in the same studio, Powerent also provided power for period drama Complete Female Stage Beauty starring Rupert Everett and Claire Danes, due to be released later this year.
The latest Harry Potter film utilized a super silent generator with fuel tank to supply extra power for a set being filmed in St Pancras Chambers in London. The Victorian Gothic building, which was being used for some interior shots was unable to supply sufficient power for the filming equipment.
2003 also saw Powerent's sister Longville Group company, CRS Ltd, on the cast list for the much anticipated Thunderbirds movie. It provided 500kW of air conditioning for an overheating Tracey Island set.
Powerent's influence has not just been limited to the silver screen. The company also provided specialist power generators for the launch of Kylie Minogue's new album Body Language - a performance watched by 4,000 specially invited guests and millions of television viewers.
2004 sees Powerent in Luxembourg where it is providing power for a new production of The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino. The company has also jus
UK - The Evenser Group, the UK's largest event services company, has announced a refinance and restructure package agreed with its majority shareholders (comprising funds managed by Candover) and its principal bankers. Evenser will demerge the companies that make up the Broadcast and Presentation Services divisions to a newly incorporated company to be called Blitz Charter Group Ltd ('Blitz'). Following the restructuring, Blitz will operate as an entirely independent broadcast and presentation services group and Evenser will operate as an independent events services group.
Following the demerger, the Evenser Group will consist of Arena Event Services Group and Melville Exhibition Services, headed by David Walley and Nick Marshall respectively. The new Blitz Charter Group will comprise Blitz Communications and Charter Broadcast, which will be headed by Paul Hutton and David Carr.
The restructuring has been prompted by the differing requirements of the two parts of the group as they move forward and is designed to allow each part to focus on its core business, innovating in the market sector it knows best. Evenser and Blitz will continue their working relationship without the constraints of a group structure, say the company.
Barry Day, CEO of Evenser Group commented: "In the current market conditions it's essential that we focus on what our clients want and what we are best at. The restructure allows us to do just that."
UK - Young musician Kelly Stanley won Medway Council's Sound Generation Concert, held in Chatham this month, and walked away with the first prize of a Soundcraft GigRac, the latest in professional audio mixing consoles.
The Sound Generation concert, which was organized to generate awareness of the Council's road safety SAFE (Stop Accidents For Ever) campaign, attracted a large audience under the Chatham centre flyover, as the bands blasted out their music on a Sunday afternoon.
Kelly Stanley, the youngest finalist in the competition at just 13, demonstrated her ability with a stunning mix of feminine rock and acoustic ballads. In a fiercely contested afternoon all six finalists produced outstanding performances with sets consisting of original music. The other finalists included bands PKFY, Seven Story Down, CCTV and Delayed Experience and rapper 'Richie D'.
Medway Council's road safety unit teamed up with Soundcraft, the designer of the GigRac, in order to offer this essential gigging tool to the winners of the competition. GigRac is distinctive in its capabilities as a portable unit that integrates the mixer, amplifier and preset sound functions to offer professional sound quality. The unit allows easy connection for multiple mics, instruments and loudspeakers to deliver a punchy performance. GigRac features quality mic preamps for clear voice definition, a two-band EQ and a seven-band graphic EQ on the output designed by BSS Audio - together with a selection of preset digital effects.

UK - Autograph Sound Recording, the world-renowned sound design and theatre rental specialist, has been invited to work on the brand new West End musical Jailhouse Rock. Based on the classic 1957 Elvis film of the same name, this energetic show will no doubt have London's Piccadilly Theatre 'all shook up'!
Autograph's award winning Simon Baker, recently honoured as LDI's sound designer of the year, was chosen to design the show by production company Theatre Partners after their collaboration on 125th Street. Simon is working with the unusual situation of the entire cast being actor/musicians, who play all their own instruments live with no orchestral backup, resulting in a much more complex and intuitive system design.
Autograph have supplied a Cadac F-Type mixing console, as well as three additional digital Yamaha D1000 desks, one for foldback, one to pre-mix all on-set microphones and the third for a multi-track pre recorded mix. An extensive and almost exclusive range of Meyer Sound loudspeakers have been chosen for this fast moving rock musical, including the M1D ultra-compact cabinet as the main system, with MSL-2s as a central cluster while several more are positioned on stage for sound effects. A number of UPM-1Cs and UPA-1Cs have been employed for foldback, and a further 50 UPM-1Cs are installed around the auditorium for delay and surround sound effects.
The show uses a large volume of microphones for both cast and set - 20 Sennheiser SK5012s for the cast and 16 SK50s for live instruments, along with 30 Sennheiser compact low distortion e
