UK - Avolites’ video and lighting control integration system Synergy has won a coveted PLASA Awards for Innovation.
Picked by an expert panel of judges, Synergy stood out because it “opens up the creative opportunities for visual effects on stage as well as providing time-saving opportunities in production workflow.”
Koy Neminathan, Avolites sales director, says: “We’re all thrilled that Synergy has won a PLASA Innovation Award. Synergy is the product of years of experience and innovation as we continue to push forward what’s possible for total visual creative control. To have this recognised by the judges is a testament to the forward-thinking attitude at Avolites and the hard work we put in to achieving our vision of the future - which is empowering our users to achieve even more incredible things.”
Synergy was launched at this year’s Prolight+Sound and quickly gained acclaim for being a simple and functional solution that enables users to connect and configure Ai media server from the Titan interface.
Stephen Baird-Smith, Avolites sales manager, adds: “Developing the integration of two very different platforms is a formidable challenge, but one which makes so much sense for our industry. Our goal is to create a platform which is creative enough to ‘speak’ to the artists who are creating content, or lighting the shows or scenery, yet is technically adept enough to be able to deliver all of the detail and precision that is required on shows.”

Belgium - Boomtown Fest (see LSi September 2018) is part of the 10-day Gentse Feesten (Ghent cultural festivities) in Belgium. Running since 1843, and therefore celebrating its 175th anniversary, today it attracts as many as 1.7m visitors over the duration.
Held at the 850-capacity Handelsbeurs Concert Hall, as well as Opera Ghent and on outside festival grounds, Boomtown started in the year 2,000, and today provides three stages and 41 acts over five days. The event combines indie music from some of the country’s up and coming talent with international acts like Suzanne Vega (who appeared in Opera Ghent).
Martin Audio’s rental partner, ARC-Productions from Dentergem, added MLA Compact to their vast inventory of the manufacturer’s components back in 2014, when they used it for the first time at Boomtown. Prior to that they had deployed Martin Audio’s W8LC, and going back even further, a W8C and W8CS combination.
This year they hung eight elements of MLA Compact on each stage wing, with 12 x SXH218 subwoofers in 4 x 3 stacks, run in cardioid mode. They also added two MLA Mini / MSX delay positions to cover a 900sq.m outdoor area. This met a design and specification conceived by freelance sound engineer, Jan De Rycke, who was appointed by the organisers.
However, MLA needed astute optimisation by De Rycke himself, to ensure there was no offsite pollution and that levels rem
UK - Innovative technology and insightful seminars have been the highlights on Day One at the PLASA Show, with exhibitors wowing visitors with new technologies and stylish solutions.
After revealing its new stand concept, Platinum Sponsor Robe continues to showcase its latest lighting fixtures in a show-stopping stand production featuring a dance troupe, rain, fire and a mysterious cave, all visible from the Gallery Level. “We decided to create a ‘Lost World’ trilogy for three trade shows,” explains design duo Nathan Wan and Andy Webb. “We drew inspiration from Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones and the Goonies, creating an epic fire VS water battle. We always go big and this year sees a 22m wide rain feature.”
Stand aesthetics have led the way for Yamaha, too. Chris Irvine, Yamaha’s product manager, says: “This year we took a new approach which has had a great reaction. Rather than bringing loads of gear, we built an aesthetically-pleasing stand and chose a few key products - the legacy PM5D digital mixing console which is out of production, and the modern, cutting-edge PM7. This has allowed us to engage with visitors regarding which products they have used over the years.”
Debuting at PLASA for the first time are Epson with their PLASA Award for Innovation-nominated EB-L1755U projector, which has already proved itself as a show-stopper. Hungary - Such is Capital Sound’s long-term and consolidated contract with the Sziget Festival organisation, that the rock-solid production formula now ensures that the massive seven-day festival on Hajógyári Island, north of Budapest, runs seamlessly.
With Martin Audio MLA again reinforcing sound on the main and second stages, and further Martin Audio PA on the Colosseum dance stage, the biggest news was that in its 26th year the event again broke attendance records, with an aggregated 565,000 estimated to have visited the picturesque location on the Danube, over the seven days.
A veritable line-up this year included Arctic Monkeys, Stormzy, Clean Bandit, Kendrick Lamar, Gorillaz, Lana Del Rey, Mumford & Sons, Dua Lipa - and many more. And with such an international line-up of A-listers, Capital account manager Paul Timmins says: “All the top acts bring experienced sound engineers who know they will be able to get the levels they are seeking - whether it be 96dB(A) or 106dB(A) and it’s just not a subject that is spoken about anymore.”
Drilling into the minutiae we see that a slightly wider stage this year called for two additional MLA Compact enclosures boosting the infill complement to 18 MLA Compact, and the newer Martin Audio SX218 subs replacing the older models on the delay towers.
“We are geared up to respond to any changes, no matter how small,” adds Timmins. “For us it is a two-truck mission, reinforced by our partners, BG Event and Polish PA company Musnicki, who service it locally.” Thanks to their proximity,
