UK - The ISCVE has announced the appointment of Jim Smith as its new president, officially introduced at this year’s ISCVEx event.
Smith brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for the audio, communications and AV industries and at ISCVEx, he shared his gratitude and optimism for the future of the Institute.
“I’m deeply honoured and excited to take on the role of president of the ISCVE. I look forward to building on the strong foundations already in place and supporting the delivery of key initiatives, such as the Good Sound Charter and Training for Microphone Users. I’m especially keen on supporting the development of new and yet to be conceived initiatives with a particular focus on AV and ESG (Environment, Social and Governance).
“In the last couple of years, the Institute has forged valuable partnerships with organisations dedicated to advancing our industry and improving and enriching the lives of both those working in it and the people we serve. I’m passionate about fostering these collaborations and encouraging our members to be active participants in driving positive change.
“Collectively, we have an opportunity to promote a more diverse and inclusive membership, support early career development and strengthen professional expertise across the sector. The ISCVE is here for its members and I encourage and invite them to share their ideas and suggestions on how we can best serve and (continue to) advance our amazing and exciting industry.”
Smith steps into this role following years of active involvement with the ISCVE, and a professional career spanning more than 30 years in acoustics. A chartered engineer and associate director at Vanguardia, Smith’s expertise spans acoustic design, testing and specification for high-performance sound systems - particularly in challenging environments like stadia, arenas, airports and transport hubs. His work has supported projects on an international scale, including systems for Olympic and World Cup venues.
Smith has been a member of the ISCVE since the early 2000s and sees his appointment as president as part of a wider journey for the Institute: “Since becoming a member, I’ve seen the ISCVE gain significant recognition as one of the UK’s foremost learned authorities serving the audio and AV industry. I’m incredibly proud to be part of its future.”
As part of the ISCVE’s leadership transition, David Howe has been appointed as vice-president. Howe succeeds Smith in this role and brings invaluable insight and leadership experience to the position.
Howe is the founder and managing director of Audomation Software, specialising in software control systems for AV and PA/VA systems. With more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Howe has worked across manufacturing, installation and control systems development, including projects for the London 2012 Olympics and major stadiums across Europe.
Howe says: “Being a member of the ISCVE is one of the best ways to promote the technical competence of an individual. Being on Council has enabled me to play my part in stimulating the growth of our membership and their ongoing learning, through the extensive range of training courses the ISCVE now offers.”
ISCVE also extends sincere thanks to Neil Voce who has now transitioned into the role of immediate past president. Under Neil’s leadership, ISCVE has navigated forward with purpose, launching new initiatives, training opportunities and strengthening industry partnerships.
