UK - London’s Roundhouse concert and performing arts venue in Camden now has an all Robe moving light rig with a recent investment in 20 x Esprite luminaires, fitted with the HP (High Performance) LED engine for the highest output and strongest colours. The order was overseen for Robe UK by Curtis Lewis, their business development manager for the London area.
These fixtures join 82 existing Robe moving lights at the venue – 42 x LEDBeam 100s, 16 x DLF Washes, six DLX Spots and six LEDWash 600s – with the Esprites now the primary house rig spot fixtures, and available to all incoming productions.
Roundhouse head of lighting Steve Royle explained that the new Esprites are part of a major technical update and an ongoing sustainability drive to make the Roundhouse as energy efficient as possible.
He has held the head of lighting post since 2010 and was instrumental in the purchase of the LEDBeam 100s, DLF Washes and LEDBeam 600s in 2013. At that stage, there wasn’t an LED spot fixture on the market that was bright and viable enough to add to the rig, so they went with a set of discharge source fixtures.
Steve and his team looked at several possible options when it came to choosing the new LED spots. The Esprite emerged a clear winner.
“They are incredibly bright and bring a whole new meaning and range of possibilities to how shows can be lit,” he stated. “They ticked all our boxes and more. We needed a flexible, multipurpose light that fulfilled several requirements and that could cover our varied artistic and commercial pro
Spain - Naostage will welcome ISE 2024 attendees to an immersive and interactive experience on stand #5D750. The company’s award-winning tracking solution, K System, forms the cornerstone of the Naostage stand, where a dedicated ‘black box’ live tracking experience will present visitors with an immersive, interactive show in four parts.
The show will begin with an immersive video made by Naostage partner Cutback, with video mapping handled by SMODE (Naostage’s technical partner at ISE) and tracking and interaction managed by K System. Comprising three scenarios and designed to be interactive and contemplative, the segment caters to professionals in cultural tourism markets, such as museum spaces, as well as those in marketing looking for cutting-edge solutions.

Developed and set up in collaboration with La FabSonic, and delivered in partnership with L-Acoustics, whose L-ISA audio processor is powering the spatial audio, the 3D sound system will attribute visitors an audio source that follows their movement, enablin
Europe - Claypaky continues its efforts to improve its environmental performance with the CP Green project launched in 2022. The company has already implemented several aspects of the long-range project, which is constantly revised to make Claypaky’s sustainability strategy more effective and efficient.
The main objective of the project is reducing Claypaky’s impact on climate change and mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To achieve this goal, the first and most important step is calculating GHG emissions, since it is not possible to improve what is not measured. For this reason, for the second consecutive year Claypaky obtained in November 2023 the ISO 14064 certification, which calculates impact on climate change at the organizational level for the year 2022.
This study, performed with the support of Spinlife, spin-off of the University of Padova, has been carried out with a “cradle to grave” approach analysing all direct and indirect emissions. This organisational carbon footprint assessment allows Claypaky to understand where the environmental hot-spots are and to define concrete actions to reduce its impact on climate change. The result of this analysis will also permit updating the carbon management plan established in 2022 (created according to data of the ISO 14064 study of the year 2021) and delineating a more precise and realistic GHG emission reduction strategy.
With this in mind, Claypaky has already started implementing some of the GHG mitigation activities established by the carbon management plan of last year.

UK - Build solutions specialist Star Live has invested in a QC-Check safety inspection system from Data Strategy following its recent investment from LDC, part of Lloyds Banking Group. QC-Check embeds safety into the processes of Star’s new lifting division which underpins the safety and compliance issues for the company’s four pillars of business.
QC-Check streamlines the process of professional electrical appliance and cable testing in bulk, with full electrical-safety test records referenced to an individual asset level. For Star Live’s purposes however, QC-Check’s ability to facilitate the equivalent tracking and maintenance of data from the new heavy duty mechanical testing equipment, made it a pivotal part of the plan.
Star Live technical director, Roger Barrett, maintains, “QC-Check has absolutely transformed our testing capabilities here. It’s been noted by people who’ve been with us a long time that there’s a new level of confidence now: knowing that when they grab half a dozen cables on-site, they’re all going to work.” He adds, “It’s difficult to imagine anything else could do what it does.”
Every item in current use at Star Live went through the QC-Check testing and tracking process ahead of the King’s Coronation celebrations that kicked off the 2023 summer season. Barrett emphasises that, with the benefit of QC-Check, getting control over kit during that time “makes such a difference. It’s difficult to appreciate just how much of a difference it makes.”
In conclusion, Barrett states, “QC-Check h

UK - Located in Horsham, West Sussex, The Capitol is a multi-arts community venue which comprises a main theatre, two cinema screens, a studio theatre and a gallery space. It first opened in 1936 as a cinema and today prides itself as an accessible and diverse building, accommodating a variety of performance arts. It’s 410-seat main theatre space is one which regularly plays hosts to UK touring shows, concerts and even celebrity talks.
It was recently decided that the space would upgrade its lighting equipment to ensure the venue reduced its overall carbon footprint. As both a B Corp, as well as an organisation that has helped several venues in their quest to become more sustainable, White Light (WL), a d&b solutions company, was approached to provide these fixtures.
The investment at The Capitol was overseen by venue and productions manager Matthew Effemey. He comments: “I look after all the programming of the venue and act as Head of Production for anything produced in house, including our annual Pantomime. As such, I am very much aware of the technical infrastructure of the building and where its previous set-up was somewhat lacking when it came to being environmentally friendly.”
He continues: “The main drive behind the upgrade was to reduce our carbon footprint. We had a lot of fixtures that were nearing end-of-life; ones that were often burning away throughout rehearsals and performances. We knew this wasn’t sustainable if we were to achieve our goals and that moving over to LED was the best way forward.”

Puerto Rico - The design team at The Playground created a memorable moment this December during La Meta, the final five concerts in Daddy Yankee’s career. It occurred in their show’s fourth act when a massive stone bust emerged on the deeply immersive stage at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico to reveal the reggaeton star and his trademark geometric goat head logo.
It was a moment that no one in the packed arena is ever likely to forget, which is precisely what the Playground team of Curtis Adams (show and creative director); Trevor Ahlstrand (production designer); and Sooner Routhier (production designer), aspired to achieve when they collaborated on the show.
Working with lighting programmers Will Flavin and Dane Kick and drawing on the power of a 4Wall Entertainment supplied rig that featured over 500 Chauvet Professional fixtures, the designers captured the essence of one of the music industry’s most influential careers.
“To make the entire design cohesive, we were inspired by the shape of the language within Daddy Yankee’s branding and career, which gave us an incredibly fun playground to dream within,” said Adams. “Daddy Yankee asked us for his biggest show yet, so we were driven to discover ways to engineer the performance space creatively and artistically.”
Added Routhier: “Given that these were the final shows of Daddy Yankee’s career, we were tasked with creating his biggest arena production ever. Our design spanned the entire arena, allowing the audience to feel totally immersed in the show.”

UK - Max Webster’s intense production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, featuring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, opened to positive reviews at London’s Donmar Warehouse in December.
Played out on Rosanna Vize’s stark, minimalist set, comprising a flat white platform backed by a glass wall that isolates off-stage actors from the action, the audience listens through binaural headphones that catch every nuance of the actors’ speech, drawing them deeper and more intimately into the text - and Macbeth’s mental state.
Lighting designer, Bruno Poet, accentuates this intensity with the help of Ayrton Khamsin TC fixtures: “The simplicity of the set - the sharp-edged white platform contrasting heavily with the black surroundings - combined with the detail of the soundscape meant it wasn’t always necessary to see the actors’ faces fully,” explains Poet. “This gave me a lot of freedom to use lighting in a very directional, sculptural way, and the Khamsin TCs were the key element in this.”
Poet used just six Ayrton Khamsin TC (True Colour) fixtures in the overhead rig as his main workhorse fixtures. “The quality of light from the Khamsin’s TC engine was beautiful and the output gave me so many creative possibilities,” he says.
One Khamsin TC was rigged over each corner of the stage with a further two in upstage- and downstage centre positions. “Because the zoom goes so wide, I found to my delight, I could light the whole stage using just one Khamsin. Obviously at other times we balanced them in different ways, but one single
Turkey - Lighting designer Martin Kuhn tapped into the power and reliability of a grandMA3 replay unit to run a spectacular permanent show that he designed for Istanbul’s Maiden’s Tower. The landmark stands on a tiny islet at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus strait, 300m from the coast of Üsküdar in Istanbul, and has recently re-opened after restoration.
Martin was working for Istanbul AV specialist ASTEL and end client, the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The lighting includes 48 Ayrton Cobra moving lights which are positioned around the perimeter of the lower sea wall in protective cabinets that open when the show starts, and a selection of 76 Anolis Eminere and Calumma fixtures illuminating the various architectural elements, together with 27 SGM P2s and P6 LED floods.
The lights are connected via six grandMA3 2Port Nodes and two MA Network Switches and the show was programmed on and offsite on a grandMA3 light console by Martin and Marc Marlo Schelesnow. Once they had completed all the finessing, the showfile was transferred to the grandMA3 replay unit.
Martin researched the history of Maiden’s Tower and its role in Istanbul’s culture and heritage as he wanted to deliver a meaningful and educative lightshow that represented its significance and importance to this thriving dynamic city.
He collaborated with one of Turkey’s leading authors, Ayşe Kulin, who storyboarded a narrative from which Martin, via Depence 3 software, produced a three-minute video showcase for the client to pitch his lightshow ideas.

Ireland - A team from Dublin-based Spectrum Productions led by David Lawless and Jack Quirke supplied a large quantity of Robe moving lights rig for a sold-out electro-extravaganza gig by popular Irish mixmasters, Belters Only, at Dublin’s 3Arena.
David and the team have been working with the artists for the last year and designed the floor lighting package for their 2023 festival appearances. Their brief for the 3Arena show was to make it big, bold, and breathtaking visually, helping pump the energy and excitement everywhere in the room - from the stage to the back of the auditorium.
On the lighting plot were over 100 Robe moving lights - 52 Robe Tetra2’s, 12 TetraX’s and 32 MegaPointes - comprising most of the moving lights, joined by strobes, some other profile moving lights and 10 30W lasers.
The lighting design was based on a 10m diameter circular truss centrepiece, inspired by the ‘circle of life’ in the musical duo’s logo, which was flown vertically and prominently in front of a large LED screen masked into a spherical shape. The DJ booth sat on a riser downstage of both these elements.
Four two-metre upright truss sections in front of the riser were rigged with the 12 TetraXs, providing whizzy and crazy effects to fill the space where there was no screen and for dramatic back lighting for guest vocalists and dancers using the space in front to perform.
Twenty-eight Tetra2s were rigged around the perimeter of the large circle. More were on four floor-mounted vertical truss towers measuring 3m and 6m respectively and p
