Sweden - XM Automation started the new year on a high by successfully demonstrating its XMove software controlling a number of automated bars in an existing theatre system. The XM team were able to show how easy it could be to upgrade the control front-end without requiring costly upgrades to the existing hardware or electrical installation.
The demonstrations attracted more than 50 Swedish theatre technical directors, technicians and consultants, all keen to see how XMove, the new front-end software could be used to run an existing system with minimal changes to the back-end. According to one attendee,“This event is too interesting to miss.”
The ease of use and intuitive, familiar feel of the software also surprised many attendees, who were able to try programming and running even quite complex moves for themselves after just a short introductory tutorial.
As XM Automation’s founder and director, whose previous experience includes setting up and running the theatre automation company Stage Technologies, Mark Ager explains, “My aim was always to bring automation to a wider market with fewer barriers to entry for smaller and mid-sized venues. Over the last decade automation seems to have become more complex and prohibitively expensive. XM Automation aims to redress that balance by offering a genuinely cost-effective, intuitive, user-friendly alternative.”
This is important because there is a mismatch between the lifetime of the software compared to the hardware of a system. The expected lifetime for the electrical and mechanical equi
Spain - HOF will debut the PG3 NEO Design Stand. The set contains all the necessary items to realise countless installation variants: the universal carrier enables lighting or small loudspeakers to be mounted. There is also a universal plate to mount moving lights, projectors etc. and a TV mounting plate. Speakers can be mounted centrally using a spigot.
The set is rounded off by a display mount to hold two displays with a maximum surface area of up to 1.5 m² per display (back to back) and a display holder that can be adjusted in four angles (e.g. for previewers or touchscreens).
The PG3 NEO Design Stand can be built in 11 different heights up to a maximum height of 3200mm with a permissible load capacity of 60kg. So in a nutshell: one stand fits all!
The surfaces are powder-coated in black. The steel base plate is used to mount the extensions in three different positions, allowing the weights of the units to be optimally balanced.
The design of the PG3 NEO Design Stand is deliberately discrete and understated, making it ideal for use at trade shows, conferences and live events. And thanks to the set, everything is where it should be when setting up.

UK - The festive period is a busy time for the riggers at Unusual. The team certainly has its hands full with Christmas lights being hung in Regent St, more than 20 pantomimes taking place across the UK and a big Christmas musical on the West End.
Based on the Hollywood hit movie starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, Elf opened at London’s Dominion Theatre on 15 November for a limited eight-week run, with production manager Stuart Tucker bringing the Unusual team on board to handle the rigging requirements.
Stuart commented: “This is quite an involved show from a rigging perspective as the venue is actually quite tight for space. With everything from drift ladder beams off fly bars for lighting and rigging for flying pieces overhead to Kinesys, storage hoists, front of house trusses for snow machines, etc.”
With drawings completed by Unusual’s Emily Egleton and onsite rigging managed by Tom Berry and Dave Curtis, load in was relatively straightforward, though not without some challenges as Stuart explained; “The set was actually purchased off the former producers of the show and is actually quite old fashioned, heavy and on the large side.
“Getting it in through a small door takes time, and once in, it takes up a lot of space. It was built nearly 10 years ago and of course, if it was built again today it would be very different and nowhere near as heavy. Getting Santa’s sleigh in and out takes time – never underestimate the complexities of loading a large west end show lin in five days.”
Stuart’s rock & roll bac

UAE - In November 2023, aviation companies and organisations descended on the new Dubai World Central aerotropolis for the biennial Dubai Airshow.
The 645,000sq.m site, which features a purpose-built 42,870sq.m exhibition hall - about the size of seven football fields welcomed some 1,046 exhibitors from 60 countries and drew a trade attendee intake of 60,692. Such a massive event required an equally massive amount of rigging, with Tarsus Group contracting Unusual Rigging and Engineering to handle the task.
“In total we provided more than 900 rigging points - 750 of which are hoists, along with more than 2000 metres of truss”, said Unusual rigger, Khalid Ali. “The 2023 airshow has broken all records for us, with only the 2009 event coming close in terms of scale.”
URE has been contracted to provide the rigging for both the Dubai Airshow and MEBAA for over a decade. However, as well as providing rigging points, the Unusual riggers have worked directly with many of the exhibitors too. The team has also worked on outdoor static display areas.
Khalid said: “Perhaps the biggest challenge was completing the build before the venue filled up with exhibitors wanting to build their stands. Things were changing every day, with orders and demands increasing. We were still working when the stand contractors and exhibitors turned up to build their booths and the carpet was being laid, and this of course made things a lot trickier.”
He continued: “This is one of the few instances where planning ahead is not the answer. New surprises rea
UK - Celebro is a global broadcast TV company that rents out production and studio space around the world. All studios are located in prime city centre locations in Washington DC, New York and London - and all boast quality broadcasting equipment, including a wide range of kit from Doughty Engineering.
The London studio recently moved to a new location - from Portland House near Oxford Circus to the old Hospital Club in Covent Garden. And, because the team are such big fans of Doughty, they decided to take all their kit with them.
Wesley Dodd, CEO, Celebro explained; “We have always had Doughty rails as part of our system and in Portland House, the ceilings weren’t particularly high so they did the job. However, in our new location, there was already an amazing Doughty Lighting Rail which was put in by the previous owners. This was essentially made from Doughty scaff poles - however at nearly 5m high, this wasn’t necessarily going to work for us. We do a lot of TV and B2B work and we find that with these shoots, there isn’t that much time for complex lighting work.”
What Wesley decided to do was to utilise the company’s existing stock of studio rail and pantographs and add them on to the existing system. “This gives us the ability to work much faster. We have about 100 lamps on pantographs and slides. However, with ceilings of that height, the only way to get up and change them is with a scissor lift. But with pantographs and poles, 90% of the resetting can be done from the ground. Not only does this save us and our clients a lot of ti

USA - The first ever Power Trip music festival was considered epic before it even took place. Six of the world’s best known heavy metal and hard rock bands gathered to play on one stage, and 4Wall, Paradox and Elation had the honour of lighting the event.
Metallica, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Tool (subbing for Ozzy Osbourne) all played at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California, 6-8 October, where up to 80,000 fans gathered each day. Power Trip marked the first concert in seven years from AC/DC.
Some 80 Proteus Maximus, 18 Proteus Excalibur, 84 DTW Blinder 700 IP and 80 DTW Blinder 350 IP luminaires from Elation, were all used by the lighting design team at Paradox Production and Design and 4Wall Entertainment, led by 4Wall account executive and production manager Dallas Gaspar. 4Wall also supplied additional lighting packages for the Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metallica performances.
Dallas commented: “It was amazing. I grew up listening to AC/DC and Metallica so it was a great full circle moment for me to help design the stage that those bands signed off on and played on.”
At Power Trip, just two bands played extended sets each day on a single, massive stage backed by a huge video wall. Potent lighting was needed to cut through, and as the festival was outdoors for several days it also needed to be IP65-reliable. Temperatures over the weekend turned out to exceed 100°F, which proved no problem for the fixtures’ innovative cooling system.
“It was a huge show with intense rock bands so the p

Denmark - Motor Stage Automation (MSA) is a company that loves challenges. So Christian Vigsø and his team were delighted to be asked to design a bespoke flying runway solution for a recent massive show by popular Danish hip hop phenom Suspekt, for their only live appearance this year - at Parken stadium in Copenhagen.
In the process, MSA devised a new modular quick assembly touring product - M:CAT - which is now available exclusively from MSA, a fresh and innovative Danish enterprise working internationally and specialising in the art of designing and delivering stage and show automation and movement elements.
Christian was initially approached by Suspekt’s lighting designer and set designer Johnny Thinggaard and their production manager and show director Jonas Friis, who wanted a flying 45m walkway to enable the band to traverse between the Main and B stages throughout the carefully choreographed performance.
They also wanted to stage a ‘surprise’ opening with the band on the B-stage in the middle of their fans - with the runway nowhere in sight, and no obvious route for them to get to the main stage.
With VIGSØ Dryhire already confirmed as the event’s lighting supplier via project and crew management specialist 4K Projects, MSA - part of the Generator Group - also presented the best solution for the show’s required automation engineering.
The company has dealt with flying catwalks many times before, explained MSA project manager Jimmy Jonhson, however up to this point, there has not been a safe, easily deployable, off-t
Europe - HOF will reduce the prices for standard truss by up to 15% as of 1 November 2023. This affects the truss systems HOFKON and HOFFORK (with the exception of the MLT series). The prices of the HOFKON 290-4 series in black will also be reduced by up to 15%.
This price reduction is a reaction to the current easing on the procurement market for raw aluminium. Both the HOFKON 290-4 series and the HOFKON 290-4 Black series are currently available from stock.
Dennis Klostermann, Co-CEO at HOF, says: "The last few years have been challenging for all of us in the industry due to the pandemic and the associated supply chain issues. We are very pleased that the current market situation allows us to pass on the more favourable procurement prices for raw material to our partners. We look forward to a continued successful collaboration."

USA - Offering increased thickness and weight capacities, ADJ has upgraded the selection of safety cables available as part of its Accu-Cable range. With a focus on strength, reliability, and value, the new safety cables are designed to offer ‘complete peace of mind for all professional lighting and production applications’. The TÜV approved range features three different weigh loading options, which all share the same robust and practical design.
Safety cables are an essential component of any entertainment technology installation, which ensure protection for equipment and personnel. They are used to add an extra layer of security when equipment - such as lighting fixtures, atmospheric generators, and speakers - are rigged at height. A safety cable will ensure that a piece of equipment will not fall to the ground - causing damage and potentially injury - should its primary rigging mechanism unexpectedly fail.
The new Accu-Cable safety cables offer increased weight ratings compared to the previous models thanks to the use of thicker cable. Crafted from high-quality steel, the cables offer excellent resistance to corrosion and wear, making them ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications. Their rugged design provides tensile strength, allowing them to withstand demanding conditions and maintain their integrity over time. The cables have TÜV approval, which means they have been successfully load tested to ten times their published weight rating. Users can therefore have complete peace of mind that they can be relied on to provide fall protection fo
South Africa - CS Productionz, a company that specialises in conferences, corporate productions and exclusive events, has expanded its equipment inventory to accommodate its busy schedule.
With offices in both Durban and Johannesburg, the company recently made an investment in Prolyte StageDex and a Beavis II 32A 3-Phase Distro from DWR Distribution.
Clyde Shunmugam initially founded the technical supply company back in 2009 in Durban, and the opportunity to continuously meet new people and to learn from other industry professionals to fine tune his own service, has kept him passionate. He playfully hints that the delectable cuisine offered at every event is undeniably an added perk!
The company’s initial purchase from DWR included Prolyte totem truss pieces and Clyde is delighted to now expand his offerings with the addition of 10 black coated StageDex (2m x 1m) and 10 deck clamps. “All the larger AV companies use Prolyte and when I did my research I was convinced that Prolyte was the brand that would help me reach a larger clientele. I believe it also gives clients peace of mind knowing I use industry standard gear.”
In closing, Clyde commends the staff at DWR as a significant factor in choosing Prolyte. “Marlene Riley was my first sales consultant and was amazing and helped me so much when I setup my Johannesburg branch. Motlotlo Mac Makhobotloane (Mac) has also been excellent. I asked a lot of questions but he kept calm and answered everything. Thank you to the team at DWR for the exceptional service.”
