Europe - Milos has announced the release of its latest 3D component libraries for direct use with AutoDesk platforms and other DWG file compatible CAD systems.
The library contains over 1000 new blocks from the vast range of truss systems available from the Milos portfolio. The new edition features quick-snap assembly points as well as pre-assigned component attributes including part codes, system weights, dimensions and accurate bracing patterns for rigging and set construction integration.

UK - After taking Las Vegas by storm, Channing Tatum is bringing a new production of Magic Mike Live to London this autumn. Opening at the Hippodrome Casino in November, full service technical production company Hawthorn has been chosen to supply lighting equipment to the production.
Conceived and co-directed by Tatum, Magic Mike Live is a large-scale, live production show based on the hit films Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL. The show will see the theatre at the Hippodrome Casino transformed into an intimate 325-seat in-the-round performance space where guests will witness artists perform a 360° dance and acrobatic spectacular.
Hawthorn is supplying lighting from its extensive hire range to meet the specification of theatre lighting designer Philip Gladwell. Having designed the rig for the Las Vegas production, Gladwell has modified it to suit the intimate nature of the new venue, whilst also adding in some exciting new enhancements.
“Despite being a smaller space, we’ve maintained the same big lighting motifs that we have in Vegas” says Gladwell. “This includes a large grid of 20 Robe Spiiders overhead which form a sort of visual ceiling to the piece. These sit ever so slightly lower than the rest of the rig, making them much more pronounced to the eye. Not only are these a necessary way to get top light to the stage but, by pixel mapping them, they’re a great way to get movement without flashing lights.”

USA - Doughty Engineering is set to launch the new Fifty Clamp at this year's LDI. The clamp which will make its debut on booth 1827 has TUV approval, a safe working load of 50kg and has been designed to fit tube diameter 38mm-51mm. Made from pressure die cast aluminium ensures it prevents damage to thin wall truss. It is captive with M10 or M12 bolts and comes supplied with an M10 fixing kit.
Mark Chorley, design engineer at Doughty commented: "We've been working on the Fifty Clamp for a little while, so we're very excited to be launching it at LDI this year. Our Twenty Clamp is one of our best-selling pieces of kit and we realised that a clamp which could take a safe working load of 50kg would be a welcome addition to the range."
Doughty's Omega Space Saver will also make its debut at the show. Mark continued: “We actually brought the prototype version with us to LDI 2017, but this year we want to let our customers know that the Omega is now available to order. The Omega version of our popular Space Saver sees one of our Omega clamps permanently fitted to a lumiere with a hinge that locks into place. Not only is it a more ergonomic solution but it also speeds things up for the lighting technician who might find themselves having to move lights into different locations on a rig or for the touring lighting professional for whom time is always of the essence.”

UK - In September, drama school Mountview moved from its temporary home in Wood Green, north London, to a purpose-built building in Peckham. The new building houses all of Mountview's undergraduate and postgraduate performance and production arts courses under one roof and includes a 200-seat theatre, the 80-seat Backstage Theatre and a rooftop bar and restaurant with views across London.
As part of its Theatre Production Arts (Lighting) Course, Mountview receives generous support from White Light. So when the school needed to find a way of storing its equipment when it moved into its new home, they approached the technical solution specialists.
Alex Cann, senior lighting tutor at Mountview, explains: "We've operated out of our 'temporary' Wood Green home for around 30 years now. It’s a small space with a very compact lighting and sound store and nowhere near enough space for all our equipment. The new building in Peckham gives us the room we’ve all craved for some time. That said, we knew that we needed to be organised with our kit from the word go so decided to invest in some Doughty Transporter Trolleys through White Light."

UK - European stage automation specialist VisionLite invested in a new Kinesys Apex hoist system - comprising 21 x Apex motors - plus Kinesys K2 control to help facilitate its busy summer work schedule.
The new Apex products went straight out on the Resistance summer season in Ibiza where they helped create a spectacular production design for the popular club experience.
Resistance embraced its underground roots in curating a serious line-up of superlative techno, led by artists like Carl Cox and Sasha & John Digweed in the 10,000 capacity Privilege venue, running for nine incendiary events over the summer.
The Resistance creative team has developed a distinctive dynamic industrial aesthetic for their live shows which is often based on moving video and lighting pods transforming the architecture and shape of the space as the night unfolds.
Thirteen moving pods defined this year’s Ibiza look, 10 filled with LED screen elements and three with moving lights.
Those with LED were flown utilising 40 x Apex hoists, while 12 x Kinesys Elevation 1+ motors flew the three lighting pods, allowing them all to move, tilt and pitch in any direction via the K2 control.
Kinesys LibraCELL load monitoring was added to the Elevation hoist system to keep a ‘live’ check on the loads (the Apex system comes with inbuilt loadcells as standard). The safety system was controlled by two Kinesys Mentor 4 units which are SIL3 compliant, so all the e-stop buttons went through Mentor.

UK - This year’s PLASA Show was a special outing for LITEC, as their new MyT Virtue truss was entered in the PLASA Awards for Innovation 2018 and won over many show attendees with its design, folding feature, compact form factor, and 60mm main chords that allow use of standard clamps. The EXE-Drive controller range features standalone and digital multilinked controllers with both 4 and 8 channels. And the innovative EXE-Cell Interface system is a standalone load cell reader that fully integrates in a chain hoist body to provide riggers with a reading of the individual weight applied to a chain hoist during all rigging operations, in real time!
The new EXE-DST66 (dynamic stack tracks) multipurpose rail system was also presented at the show. Designed for larger projects, the DST66 claims amazingly high towing loads and extremely quick speeds.
UK - The Ladder Association, a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting work at height safety practices, is stepping up ladder safety through training with its Get a Grip on ladder safety campaign.
With falls from height still one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities and injuries - accounting for 35 fatalities in 2017/2018, according to the organisation - and with businesses facing record fines for failing to keep workers safe, the campaign sets out to ensure that everyone using a ladder is fully trained and competent to do so.
Steve Booker, chair of the association’s training committee, comments: “Safety and competence in the workplace begins with thorough and consistent training. The saying ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ is all too familiar where ladders are concerned. It’s an attitude that encourages a complacent, over-confident and potentially dangerous mentality.
“The Work at Height Regulations require that everyone involved in the work is competent, so successfully completing a Ladder Association training course – and getting a LadderCard – is one way of helping to demonstrate that competence.”
The association has created a free Ladder Safety Pack providing information on the recent changes to European ladder standard EN131. It details the correct way to use and inspect ladders and, most importantly, the route to obtaining a LadderCard through official Ladder Association training.
Russia - Twenty-five years after the launch of ChainMaster products, the Saxony-based company has grown to become one of the world's leading manufacturers of hoist technology in the event industry, offering a comprehensive range of products for everything from set up operations and complex scenic movements, to complete automation of theatre and opera house performances around the globe.
The latest projects for the chain hoist specialists from Eilenburg include the Zaryadye Concert Hall and the Helicon Theatre in Moscow.
For the Zaryadye Concert Hall, 24 chain hoists with 500 kg load capacity and 20 chain hoists with 1000kg load capacity were integrated into the existing in-house control system. The new hoists are equipped with absolute value encoders and load measuring cells and comply with DGUV V17 (formerly BGV-C1). The installation was carried out by the local sales and installation partners Stroyscirc and Doka Center.
In the Helicon Theatre, they decided on a chain hoist system for the set-up operation in accordance with DGUV V17. The system consists of 32 chain hoists with 500kg load capacity and a ChainMaster Protouch StageOperator control. The technical implementation was also realised by Doka Center.
In the course of the modernisation of the Gessneralle Theatre in Zurich, 28 existing BGV-C1 chain hoists with a load capacity of 800kg were updated. UK - Trussing manufacturer MILOS racked up another “overwhelmingly positive reception” at this year’s PLASA Show. With a selection of products from their extensive range of truss on display in the Area Four Industries UK stand, the company showcased the quality of their products and spoke with visitors about the many structural solutions they deliver for a wide array of projects.
Making its world debut was the new S10 deck from Xstage, sporting a light-weight, improved profile design, new cube lock leg attachment system (for both round and square legs), and hexagrip anti-slip surface. From the comments and praise received at the show, the future of the S10 certainly looks bright, says the company.

ANSI E1.60 offers guidance for the use of raked stages in live performance environments to mitigate the risks for the protection of actors and technicians. The guidance offered is fundamentally a risk assessment/risk reduction approach, with a process outlined and suggestions offered on what must, should, or might be done to control the risk.
UK - PLASA has said the 2018 edition of the PLASA Show has been ‘the busiest and most vibrant’ show since it moved to London Olympia in 2016.
PLASA 2018, which took place on 16-18 September, saw a 4% increase in visitors with a palpable atmosphere that was reminiscent of its popular Earls Court days. The show welcomed a stream of exhibitors and attendees from around the world, primed to explore the leading edge of live entertainment technology.
The expo also confirmed its importance for networking and trade, with 63% of visitors being final decision makers or specifiers, and a quarter being business owners, managers and directors.
Jonathan Walters, UK sales and purchasing director from A.C Entertainment Technologies comments: “This third year back in West London has really confirmed PLASA’s decision to relocate to Olympia, each show here has worked consistently well, but this year has been one of the best shows of PLASA’s history. Sunday was busy for us, but Monday surpassed all expectations. There have been many discussions over the past four years that trade shows do not generate hard sales success: Monday’s result proved that is a misnomer.”

USA - Over 60 worship bands took to the stage at Soulfest in early August in Gilford NH. Not all of them were as famous as the festival’s headliners (a group that included for King & Country, Skillet, and Toby Mac.), but each was supported by a lightshow worthy of a star, thanks to a main stage rig that featured over 75 Chauvet Professional fixtures.
“We designed this rig to be complete so it could provide big looks for the opening acts, while also complementing the floor packages brought in by the headliners,” said Tim Messina of Events United, which also supplied a “world class sound system” for the event. “As Soulfest has continued to grow over the years, Events United’s role has grown with it - from first providing production for a few smaller stages, to this year providing full production (audio, video, lighting, and backline) for the large stages of the festival.”
It was Events United’s goal to create striking, yet simple symmetry and basic fixture profile modes for the downstage, mid-stage and upstage trusses of the Revival Stage (A stage) rig. The Events United team provided this straightforward and impactful set-up to allow easy cloning for touring LDs, all of whom carried their own floor packages to complement EU’s flown system.

UK - Alan Jacobi of Unusual Rigging was honoured with the 2018 Gottelier Award at the PLASA Show. Named in memory of Tony Gottelier, the renowned industry innovator and commentator, this annual award recognises product developers who have made significant long-term contributions to the advancement of entertainment, presentation or installation technology.
Voted for by his industry peers, Jacobi was this year's recipient, having worked rigorously to raise the profile and professionalism of the rigging industry and having long recognised the need for training and education in the sector. He has been a driving force behind the NRC accreditation scheme since the beginning in 2005, and Unusual Rigging is an Assessment Centre for the NRC.
Jacobi comments: "I am so very honoured, not just to be this year's recipient of the Gottelier Award, but to know how much support I have from industry peers, friends and colleagues. They not only voted me the winner of this year's award, but have been a source of support over the years as we strive to give riggers the credit and professional respect they deserve."
He continues: "We have just made a giant step forward, having just this month won the case for having a CSCS card for members of the rigging industry to access construction sites and carry out the work they need to do. The Gottelier Award by no means signals that my work on this issue is done – there's still lots left to do and I look forward to the challenge."

UK - Lighting and rigging specialist TSL Lighting has announced the appointment of respected head rigger Ali Morris to the team as rigging project manager.
Morris brings a wealth of rigging experience to TSL, having worked in the live events industry since the mid-90s. His work has encompassed many disciplines, from theatre, television and rock & roll to festivals, sports, corporate and political events, both in the UK and abroad.
During the 2012 Olympics, he looked after the rigging of specialist cameras in many of the venues across London including both vertical and horizontal tracks in the iconic Aquatic Centre.
He has also served as head rigger at Glastonbury, Wireless and V Festivals, supervising the main stages. His most recent challenge involved touring a 4.5t custom built gantry crane for Matthew Bourne’s new production of The Red Shoes.
Morris’s appointment coincides with TSL’s investment in a further 36 x Litec EXE Rise SF8:1 30m HOL hoists, supplied by Adam Beaumont at Area 4 Industries. This takes stock levels to well over 200 hoists, all rated at D8 or D8+ level.

Belgium - Patrick Van de Sande, founder and CEO of Belgian pro audio manufacturer PVS, has announced his son Tom will succeed him as CEO.
The company is also finalising an investment of €12m in new buildings for R&D, quality control and distribution in Stevoort, Hasselt.
Tom Van de Sande comments: “A few years ago, PVS invested heavily in its own experience centre at the Veldstraat in Hasselt. In the meantime, the company has bought the buildings and land of a former transportation company in Stevoort, Hasselt. We have invested 12m euro in our new logistics centre, complete with new testing facilities and R&D centre. From this location our products are shipped worldwide, to every continent.”

The stand comprises a flat, round plate and slim tube, slotted at each end to allow cables to run unseen inside it. A 28mm receiver is incorporated in the top of the stand which will take an industry standard 28mm spigot. When used in conjunction with a speaker adaptor, the stand can also be used to hold small speakers.

UAE - Event design and technical production specialist Maestra has launched a new scenic department in Dubai. It will operate from a dedicated facility close to their HQ in Investment Park.
Maestra has been providing its clients with creative scenic services for the past few years in both London and Dubai, so this consolidates the business model, and brings a key division of the contractor services portfolio in-house.
Already delivering lighting, audio, video, rigging as well as scenic elements including the fabrication of set and staging, it was a “totally logical step” confirmed Maestra Dubai’s managing director Tom Clements.
The new department will be headed up by Jurgens Potgieter, who brings over 10 years of practical experience in the region, working for several leading fabrication contractors. Before then, he cut his ‘production teeth’ in the same industry in South Africa.
Jurgens has been deployed on many demanding and high profile shows and events, and “his wealth of talent, energy and positive personality fits perfectly with our team” says Tom.
A new warehouse has been designed and kitted out for the exclusive use of Maestra Scenic, all geared towards providing a flexible workspace with maximum efficiency.
An initial investment in new tooling and machinery will assist with custom set and scenic requirements, and while it is envisaged that this will be a big part of the activity, there will also be a comprehensive range of standard rental items available from stock.
Germany - Prolyte Group has announced the opening of their new International Training Centre (ITC) at Rheiner Strasse 125, D 48282 in Emsdetten, Germany. The new ITC state-of-art facility will provide a venue for Prolyte events and Prolyte partners to introduce Prolyte products to customers and prospective clients.
The training centre includes 500 sq.m of meeting space and is comprised of a main conference area that can host up to 100 guests and five additional breakout rooms. The building was originally constructed pre-war as a textile manufacturing warehouse.
ITC’s facilities will include a lounge and bistro area, arrange of high-end technical equipment including a digital projector and screen, video conferencing equipment, and a wide screen television.
“It’s important that we provide the right tools and environment to help our partners experience the Prolyte brand. The new facility allows a hands-on training experience where they can build structures in the field in real time,” says Lambert Bouwmeester, Prolyte’s chief executive officer.
