UK - After winning a competitive tender to provide a technical infrastructure at the London School of Economics' new Saw Swee Hock Student Centre in central London, LSI Projects turned to the Harman Professional catalogue.

Responding to a specification drawn up by consultants, Arup - to supply and fit sound and communication, lighting and staging systems in the 850-capacity nightclub/live venue - they constructed their digital routing network around BSS Audio Soundweb London components, before turning to sister company Soundcraft's digital VI platform for the main FOH and monitor mixing consoles.

Named after an alumnus who made a sizeable donation towards the £24m development cost, the building itself was designed by Irish architects Sheila O'Donnell and John Tuomey (O'Donnell + Tuomey).

Brazil - The BBC relied on Calrec Audio's digital audio consoles during its coverage of the FIFA World Cup. The broadcaster used a combination of three rented consoles to mix the audio in Brazil for transmissions in the UK.

At the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) in Rio de Janeiro, two 24-fader Artemis Light consoles served as the first point of control in the signal path, responsible for submixing all sound associated with the matches and creating simultaneous 5.1 and stereo mixes. In addition, controlled commentary and controlled effects were passed on to all other users including the edit suits in the IBC, the various multiplatform control suites in the U.K., and the BBC's studio broadcasting center (SBC), also in Rio.

At the SBC, a 56-fader Artemis Beam was used to combine the submixes from the IBC with other sources, including studio mics, postproduction playbacks, co

"I like the new ideas and easy layout of the GLD-80," comments engineer, Oscar Soederland."It's very simple and quick to setup, and has all the greatness of iLive, such as dynamics, EQ and the killer FX, combined with great speed and sharpness. GLD is also very roadworthy with a thick steel shell, quality screen, nice hard rubber sides, and the feel is very sturdy."

UK - Proving last year that London's controversial Hyde Park festival site could be protected from noise leakage into the surrounding neighbourhood by deploying Martin Audio's MLA technology, promoters AEG Live adopted a similar solution for this year's Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park festival - but with significant enhancements.

While Capital Sound, again deployed MLA and MLA Compact to guarantee coherent site coverage, Martin Audio's R&D director, Jason Baird, was determined that new optimisations would enable them to eke out as much as an additional 3dB at front-of-house without increasing offsite pollution.

As a result, 102dB(A) was achieved for McBusted, with 73dB(A) recorded offsite, comfortably within the maximum allowable of 75dB(A), while both Tom Jones (during his more strident numbers) and Black Sabbath nudged 103dB(A).

USA - Danley Sound Labs has announced the expansion of its OS Outdoor Series of fully-weatherized loudspeakers, including a new fully-weatherized subwoofer. Although all Danley products are optionally available with level-2 weatherization, which includes fibreglass seams, stainless steel hardware, and protective coatings over all wooden components, the fact remains that those wooden components will have a shorter life span in the elements than they would have had in an indoor installation.

In contrast, Danley OS products are constructed of moulded plastic with a custom injection moulded shell rated to last 50 years. The cabinet is sealed so the inner components are also protected from harsh outdoor elements. The materials are sourced from within a half-hour of Danley's Gainesville, Georgia headquarters - a boon for large orders and/or short lead times.

USA - To attract a younger, media-savvy demographic, The Crossing Christian Church in Las Vegas has installed a concert-grade Meyer Sound system. The design features the JM-1P arrayable loudspeaker and the 1100-LFC low-frequency control element, Meyer Sound's most powerful loudspeaker for the 30 Hz to 85 Hz frequency range.

"It's great to finally have a system with enough headroom so that we can push it hard when needed, and have it respond with a smooth increase in gain, without distorting or changing the tonality," says Bob Meyers, principal audio engineer at The Crossing.

For uniform coverage of the wide, 1,800-seat room, the system relies on four main clusters of JM-1P loudspeakers, with four in each end cluster and five in each of the two center clusters. One UPA-1P loudspeaker provides down-fill under each cluster, while six UPJunior VariO loudspeakers supply f

The line-up of A-List artists included David Guetta, Ellie Goulding, Miley Cyrus, Enrique Inglesias, Pharrell Williams, Calvin Harris, 5 Seconds of Summer and numerous others.

Adlib's resident KSE system engineer Tony Szabo once again designed and specified an L-Acoustics K1 / K2 PA system to complement the new stage design.

For the first time at the Capital shows, Adlib opted for DiGiCo for consoles at both ends of the multicore, this lead not only by artist requests but also Adlib's recent heavy investment in the premium audio console brand.

Full A and B line systems were run flip-flop style for the main stage revolve system. This was to facilitate the exceptionally tight changeovers. The unforgiving event schedule again fo

USA - St. Madeleine Sophie is a Roman Catholic Church in Schenectady, New York. The church has a modern architectural design with a fan-shaped sanctuary and an attractive, wood-beamed ceiling.

St. Madeleine's open ceiling promotes good acoustic diffusion but its ceramic tile floor, hardwood pews and painted walls contribute to an overall 'live' sound quality. In this environment, St. Madeleine's previous point-source audio system was unable to provide good vocal clarity and it suffered from uneven coverage, frequent feedback and a noticeable rear-wall bounce.

St. Madeleine's contacted Dominick Campana of Pro Sound Associates in Guilderland, NY to design a new sound system. Campana chose a Community Entasys ENT-FR full-range column coupled to an ENT-LF low-frequency column for each side of the chancel and a Community dSPEC226AN DSP processor for loudspeaker management and syste
