Kelsey Acoustics, leading manufacturer and supplier of professional audio and lighting cables, supplied a number of Kelsey 100 touring multipin connectors, looms and breakouts to ATG Spectrum for its recently-completed installation in Studio 3 at the BBC's Television Centre in Wood Lane.
Studio 3 is the new home of the Top of the Pops and Later with Jools Holland broadcasts, and the request for Kelsey's involvement came directly from the sound supervisor responsible for both programmes. Mike Felton explained: "We were temporarily housed at Riverside Studios for TOTP whilst the move and refurb was going on, and SSE were supplying all the monitoring and PA facilities. They use Kelsey's 32-way multicore as standard, and having used it ourselves, Gary [Clarke, sound supervisor TOTP] and I immediately requested that a compatible line system be installed in Studio 3. It entirely fitted the bill of what we were looking for."
Felton went on to explain that the key features were reliability and flexibility. "When you are using anything up to 160 circuits for just one programme which is basically five lots of 32-way multicore systems that have to be set up and broken down again in record time, they have to be tough to cope with the hurly-burly and the hostile; environment of professional use. Reliability is an essential feature for us, and the Kelsey equipment, which is military spec, seems more than tough enough for the job. Sennheiser has redefined miniaturisation in terms of wireless technology with its latest SK 5012 UHF beltpack transmitter, which, according to the company, is the smallest commercially available UHF transmitter yet designed.
The latest addition to the 5000 series, the SK 5012 is a third shorter than the current SK 50A beltpack model (itself one of the smallest available lavalier transmitters). Weighing in at just 130g, including two AAA Alkaline cells, on which it operates continually for approximately seven hours, the SK 5012 provides the lowest profile of any available professional RF transmitter while incorporating the full range of the 5000 series' features. Additionally, the all metal casing design provides greatly improved protection against moisture and humidity levels, while a new antenna design provides the SK 5012 with an RF power out put of typically 30mW - optimised for multichannel systems. Like its SK 50 A stablemate, the SK 5012 is intended for use with Sennheiser’s range of MKE 2 miniature clip mics.
Julies nightclub is a well-known Newcastle landmark. Like most clubs, it’s had its fair share of small upgrades over the years, but owner Keith Gibbon, of Lazi Leisure, felt the time had come for a major renovation - hence Julies 2.To effect the refurbishment, the venue was closed at the end of January to allow for major structural alterations to increase its size. Keith Gibbon came up with the design concept and called in the team at Lighting Technology Projects - Craig Grieveson, Dave Philips and Ray Scott - to undertake the installation. The effects lighting rig centres around Martin Professional’s MAC 250s, MiniMACs, Mx4s and CX2 colour changers, with Abstract Moonrays, Pulsar Demon Strobe units and shed loads of neon providing further punctuation. Controlling all this, and the Jem ZR12 Smoke machine, is a Pulsar Masterpiece 216. A Sony-led, four-screen video system is also installed in the venue.
For the audio elements, Ray Scott contacted Steve Coxon of Mackie/RCF to discuss the new system. The brief was for a rig that was capable of producing an articulate sound at background levels, but one which could also reproduce full-on levels when required. Following a site visit, Mackie Industrial ART 300s were spec’d, in conjunction with Monitor 8s and Vision 180s for subs. DJ monitoring was supplied by a single Mackie Industrial Art 300a.

QSC Audio has introduced the new RMX 1850HD two-channel power amplifier, aimed at performing musicians, mobile DJs, and anyone needing a portable PA system. The RMX 1850HD features a high-current toroidal transformer coupled with enhanced thermal performance and is designed to deliver higher continuous power to 2-ohm stereo or 4-ohm bridge mono loads. The amplifier includes low-frequency filters to boost system response, protect speakers, and ensure low-end tightness by accurately matching the amplifier’s range to the loudspeakers. Each channel can be independently adjusted - 50 Hz for most full-range systems, 30 Hz for subwoofers and large full-range systems, and full-range for studio monitoring.
Independent clip limiters are included on the RMX 1850HD to reduce distortion without sacrificing performance. Other features include front-mounted gain controls for easy access, signal and clip LED indicators to monitor performance, balanced 1/4" (6.3mm) TRS, XLR and barrier strip inputs; binding posts and Neutrik Speakon outputs, independent DC and thermal overload protection on each channel to automatically protect speakers and amplifier; and a continuously variable speed fan with back-to-front air flow to keep the amp and rack cool. The new RMX 1850HD is 2-RU, 16" deep (19" rack mounting) and weighs 45 lb. (20.2 kg). The unit is scheduled to ship in January 2002.
California-based Apogee International has announced the launch of a new line of internally powered loudspeakers. The line consists of seven models - four full-range loudspeakers and three subwoofers. Each model offers integrated amplifiers, matched to its driver's power requirements, plus internal signal processing and control electronics that eliminate the need for outboard crossovers and controllers.
Three models of full-range powered loudspeaker are presently available: the APL-800, APL-500, and APL-220, with the APL-110 scheduled for release early in 2002. Both the APL-800 and APL-500 feature dual 400W amplifiers and are fully arrayable and highly effective when used alone or as the building block for a large system. The APL-220, also with dual 400W amplifiers, is designed for applications requiring extremely high power and tight directional control. The APL-110 features a 300W low-frequency and a 150W high-frequency amplifier. All models are bi-amplified. Apogee's switching style amplifiers use a patented control law that reduces the distortion levels and distortion characteristics to those of a high-grade linear amplifier. The sonic quality is superb while retaining all the best properties of a switching amplifier - high efficiency, minimal heat, small size, and low weight.

An all-new sound reinforcement system has recently been installed in the historic chapel at Harrow School by installation specialists Scan Audio. The Grade 2 listed building was designed by Gilbert Scott - famous for landmarks such as the Albert Memorial and St. Pancras station, so the installation had to be carried out with great sensitivity.
"A key area to address was the problem of hearing the choir properly at back of the chapel over the large pipe organ," notes Dee Couchman of Scan Audio. Improved sound reinforcement for speech was also required throughout the chapel. "It was the opposite to the usual problem of long reverberation times in that type of building," comments Paul Malpas of consultants Arup Acoustics. "We needed to lift the choir and subtly balance their level with the organ."
The solution was to completely strip out the old column speaker-based system and to use a brand new 100v line installation. The opportunity was also taken to improve the visual aesthetics of the chapel by re-routing the new cabling underfloor or otherwise concealing it. Couchman specified mainly Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers, including six RFX81s - one of each in the north and sound transept, a pair in the chancel position and another pair in the nave. Three TRC32s were also positioned at the rear of the chapel for choir reinforcement. Orbital Sound's company brochure 'Working With Sound' has won the Award of Excellence for a corporate or promotional brochure at the 2001 Communicators in Business Awards. Designed and produced by London-based design company, Mot Juste, the brochure was judged by a panel of industry experts on its design, content and communications factor.The judges commented: "On picking this publication up we were immediately struck by the obvious high quality. Regardless of the role you play in theatre, it is obvious that the content has been geared at a number of posts, all of whom have different reasons for using this sort of equipment. The contents were very well handled and we have no doubt gave the reader sufficient information on which to make a decision whether to ask for more information.

This is a flexible, durable, and feature-packed unit with clear audio quality which is ideal for use in the most demanding of live venues, recording studios or for live broadcast applications.
Features include non-contact crossfader and channel faders. Rane's new proprietary magnetic fader is the fastest, most accurate, and long lasting on the planet. The design uses non-contact magnetic position sensor technology - previously used only for challenging aerospace and industrial applications. Unlike optical non-contact faders, the magnetic fader is impervious to smoke, moisture, temperature and aging. The electrical performance of these faders is totally unaffected by heavy use, and the mechanical life of the magnetic fader exceeds 10 million operations.

A Turbosound TCS system has recently been installed in an upgrade to an impressive school chapel in New Zealand. St. Paul's Collegiate Chapel - set within the schools grounds - underwent an audiovisual and conferencing system upgrade, undertaken by installers Audio Video Solutions Ltd.
Supplied through Turbosound distributor Audio Telex, a sound system comprising numerous TCS-56, TCS-59 and TCS-10 loudspeakers, was both flown and wall-mounted, along with a set of TCS-118 subwoofers and TCS-12M floor monitors. The chapel consists of highly reflective, angled walls, plus an all glass rear wall. With large amounts of glass panelling throughout, the client brief required the design to impress acoustically, whilst being aesthetically discreet.
Stuart Craig of Audio Telex told us: "The client wanted to be able to use the system for music playback vocal reinforcement, as well as live music. Excellent feedback rejection and the way the TCS boxes are voiced, helped us achieve all of these objectives."
The TCS56 and 59 speakers were also chosen for their slim line characteristics, which allowed them to be placed in front of the chapel columns, minimizing visual obstruction.
Central London-based Orbital Sound, specialists in the design and supply of sound and communications systems for theatre, broadcast and entertainment, has just celebrated its eighth successful year in business. To mark this point in the company's development, it has announced an expansion of its board of directors.
The board will work together with Orbital's managing director, Chris Headlam, whose decision to realign the organization's directive from within will ensure that the company is well positioned to advance into its next evolutionary phase. Jane Finlay has taken on the role of director of personnel, Sebastian Frost is creative director and Dominic Rozendaal commercial director. This new company structure will not only allow for organic growth, but will also augment the company's consistently high standards across all divisions from hire to sound design, supply and installation, through to their round-the-clock technical support services, without losing the company's attentive and informal nature.
Chris Headlam commented: "These exciting changes are aimed at helping to position Orbital so it can tackle its next evolutionary phase, in effect the next decade and beyond. We have some very exciting opportunities and plans ahead, things which not just the company, but its clients are going to be very pleased to see. The new board is well placed to take us into the future."
The Tivoli, one of Holland’s most established rock clubs, has announced a leasing agreement with Synco Europe for 12 Synco 15" monitor wedges with matching Synco amplifier and control racks. The deal makes the Tivoli the fifth club in Holland after O13, Music Center Utrecht, Nighttown and The Milky Way to have acquired the Synco wedges. All leasing contracts cover a period of a 60-month rental.
Dick te Winkel, managing director of the Tivoli told us: "Although it's our usual policy to own all the equipment in the club, the demands from our technicians and performing bands for these wedges have been very high so we're very pleased with the leasing option we got from Synco Europe, since their wedges are not for sale."
Rod Geary, Audio-Technica’s general sales manager, has recently left the company. Geary, who has overseen a period of strong growth for A-T’s UK sales operation, is a well-liked and respected member of the audio community and accordingly has already received a number of offers from some of the industry's leading manufacturers. He explained: "I intend to assess all the options and I will take my time to ensure that I make the right choice. Whatever my next step may be, I am simply looking forward to getting my teeth into a new role with the enthusiasm that comes from a fresh challenge."

L&SI has learned of further important changes from within the Harman Pro Audio camp. John McFarland and Mike Sowden of Precision Devices have negotiated a management buy-out, acquiring in the process both the company’s premises and brands.
McFarland and Sowden, who have spent the past three-and-a-half years managing the company’s operations in Redruth and Rotherham on behalf of Harman International Industries (HII), agreed the deal for the purchase of the Redruth site and brands in mid-October. The new company will be called Precision Audio Products Limited.
John McFarland told L&SI: "I believe that this move is the first step in an extremely positive future for the business, for our employees and our customers, and that our new-found independence will enable us to better develop the different arms of the business." McFarland will be taking the role of managing director and Mike Sowden will become financial director.
The new DS-12RF from DAS Audio provides an instant plug-in and go solution to a whole range of indoor and outdoor conferencing, presentation, small PA, and wireless communication links applications. The DS-12RF is a fully integrated, UHF wireless equipped, two-way self-powered speaker cabinet. The high pressure injection-moulded cabinet features high density, mineral-loaded polypropylene construction, combined with extensive internal structural reinforcement to provide a cabinet of exceptional rigidity and acoustic dampening, while maintaining a considerable weight advantage over equivalent wood or MDF type construction. The cabinet features a high power handling, low compression 12" low/mid driver and 1" HF compression driver with 2" throat, coupled to a constant directivity HF horn. Internal amplification circuits deliver 150W RMS to the low/mid driver and 50W RMS to the HF compression driver.
An integrated Sennheiser evolution 100 series switchable frequency UHF receiver system can be used with one of a selection of high quality dynamic capsule equipped, hand-held transmitters, or an alternative belt-pack transmitter and clip mic system. A line input can be balanced with the RF receiver signal, using the Master Gain, Line Level and Mic Level controls on the rear panel. Alternatively, a remote transmitter can be used to deliver a wireless communication link to a DS-12RF unit.
Following the restructuring of its top management team earlier this year, Sennheiser UK has now completed the initial phase of that process with the appointment of Alan Johnson as director of sales. Johnson, age 35, joins the company from Sony Broadcast and Professional UK, and brings considerable management experience of sales and marketing in professional audio to the post.
A career start with five years in retail management running the Sutekina hi-tech music store in London’s Denmark Street, was followed by a move into distribution with Sound Technology as Alesis ADAT specialist in 1995, before recruitment by Yamaha-Kemble to head up its professional audio sales and marketing operation.
During a four-year stay at Yamaha, Johnson was responsible for establishing the Commercial Audio division, in a restructuring of the company’s non-MI audio business. During that time he oversaw the market-leading success of products like the 02R, 03D and 01V digital mixers, aswell as the launch of the flagship PM1D live digital console. His appointment to Sony Professional audio sales and marketing manager saw his continued involvement with commercially successful digital mixing desks, with the Sony DMX-R100. He also sat on the company’s European Business team, participating in strategic planning initiatives. At Sennheiser, Johnson has assumed responsibility for planning and directing all aspects within the sales department, coordinating product and brand strategies, both internally and within the international aims of the Sennheiser Group.

ARX Systems, the Australian-based manufacturer of professional audio products has appointed well-known Melbourne-based distributor - The Resource Corp (TRC) - as its Australian distributor. ARX managing director Colin Park told us: "ARX has previously managed its own distribution network in Australia. However, with both our domestic and export markets growing rapidly, especially in Europe and South America, we realized our Australian Dealer Network needed a heightened level of support that only a truly distribution-based company like TRC could offer."

Brähler ICS (UK) Ltd, the conference technology specialist, has supplied the North-West Leicestershire District Council with a clutch of tailor-made systems. As part of an overall refurbishment, the Council Chamber is now equipped with a new microphone management system (Digimic) and an extra facility for audio-distribution for the hard-of-hearing (Infracom). The latter is an infra-red system based on Brähler's recently introduced MSI-2 transmitter and comes with daylight receivers which are immune to interference from direct sunlight.
Installation, which included a PA system for the press and public areas, was carried out by a local contractor and fully supported by Brähler. "Not surprisingly, ease of operation was emphasized," remarks Mark McGlynn, Brähler’s sales director. "For the microphones, this was partly achieved by incorporating a power supply unit that has mode switches on front of it," he explains. Once set, the power supply to the system can remain live. Moreover, the chairman's unit has a priority button which means that all the microphones can be switched off - and then reactivated as soon as they have been finished with. The installation consisted of 50 Digimic flush-mounted units, two Infracom radiator panels, and ten daylight receivers with neck loops. Standard headsets were also included for the hard-of-hearing.
The December issue of Studio Sound magazine will be the final issue of the publication dedicated to the audio broadcast and studio sector. The magazine, edited by Tim Goodyer, is part of the CMP stable, and a sister title to Installation Europe, Pro Sound News Europe and What's New in Pro Audio.
The prestigious MTV Europe Music Awards took place live from the Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany on 8 November, presented by the ever-controversial Ali G. Contributors to the event were headed by main lighting contractors Vari-Lite Europe Ltd, Britannia Row Productions, who provided a Turbosound Flashlight PA, and Black Pig, who co-ordinated the live video screen production.
Al Gurdon designed the lighting, assisted by programmer/operator Mike Owen, and Vari-Lite supplied a massive system comprising over 400 automated luminaires, 700 conventional lights and a Virtuoso control desk. Vari-Lite also supplied a prodigious 3,500 feet of truss, 105 chain hoists and nearly two kilometres of cable. The stage consisted of two large curved set pieces, principally lit by a combination of VL5s, VL6Cs, VL2402s, together with 26 MAC 2000s and 13 truss-mounted Sky-Art Searchlights with beam divertor mirrors. There were also a number of Molefay and fluorescents scattered around the stage system. The draping and trussing was supplied by Blackout Triple E and between the two set pieces there was a large Westernhagen LED Video screen.
The auditorium lighting was mounted on a central circular truss with 14 truss spines radiating round the hall with a bend in the leg to follow the curve of the roof. Mounted on these were VL2416s, VL2Cs and VL5s. Completing the auditorium were 17 VL2C spot luminaires and bars of six Par cans mounted around the balcony rail, each with a double Encapsulite fitting attached. Ken Achard, managing director of Peavey Electronics' European subsidiary, received an honorary degree of Doctor of Science at a graduation ceremony in London's Barbican Centre on November 19 2001. Conferred on him by the University of Westminster, the award was presented by the Chairman of the Court of Governors, Sir Alan Thomas, in front of two thousand graduates, their friends and families and University academics.
In her citation, Dr. Maud Tyler, Provost of the Harrow Campus of the School of Communications and Creative Industries, recognized the lifetime achievements in the music industry. Ken Achard was born in 1942 and educated at Lewes County Grammar School. A veteran of 38 years in the music business, he became an acknowledged authority on vintage guitars in the early seventies, publishing one of the first works of reference on the subject - The History and Development of the American Guitar - in 1978. A long-standing business and personal relationship with Hartley Peavey started in 1973 when Achard became one of the initial export distributors for American music and sound equipment manufacturer, Peavey Electronics. In 1976, Peavey Electronics Ltd was incorporated in the UK and Ken Achard was appointed managing director, a position which he has held to this day. During that time the brand has grown in importance not only in the UK, but throughout Europe. A pan-European distribution operation has been created in recent years at Peavey's headquarters in Corby.

Audio rental company SSE Hire has announced the appointment of two new directors to the Board, Emma Barwell and Spencer Beard. Emma has been with the company for three years and takes on the role of sales director. Spencer has been with SSE for the last six years and joins the Board as hire operations director. SSE Audio Group sales director Chris Beale explains: "We felt it was time to enhance the scope of the Board by adding some younger members, who we know will bring along fresh ideas and attitudes. Both Emma and Spencer have proved themselves to be invaluable to the team at SSE over recent years, and we are pleased that they both accepted this new challenge."
SSE Audio Group Managing Director John Penn added: "With the formation of the Audio Group this year, we have all been very busy dealing with the wider business. It was therefore an appropriate time for us to look at expanding the Board at SSE - to pass on some of the day-to-day decision making to the leading members of our younger team. Proel has unveiled a brand new series of high quality, low cost rack and display stands, designed for studio and live applications, as well as use by retailers and others. Cadac's long-standing association with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera continues with the latest production scheduled to open in Korea on 2 December 2001. Phantom is being staged at the LG Arts Center by The Really Useful Group of Australia, in conjunction with local entertainment company Zemiro. Production sound engineer Greg Pink is responsible for all the engineering aspects of the show's sound system, which has been jointly supplied by Orbital Sound of London and the LG Arts Center. The system includes a new 31-input Cadac J-Type Live Production Console, equipped with six Programmable Group and three Programmable Auxiliary modules. Phantom's track record encompasses some 18 countries and 99 cities, playing to audiences of over 58 million to date: the Korean production follows in the footsteps of a number of major musicals staged at LG Arts Center, which is also the permanent residence of a Cadac F-Type Live Production Console.
Commenting on the new production, Greg Pink told us: "Normally we would bring an entire system into a venue, but for this production we were asked to use the console installed at the theatre. This is the first time we have used two different Cadac consoles, and due to the complexity of 'Phantom', it has been necessary to link them in a non-conventional way. Cadac provided audio bus breakout cables to enable me to link only selected parts of the two consoles, including Matrix injects on the F-Type which are not normally available on this console.
