Logic has come a long way since first introducing its own-brand systems at PLASA 1997. Its CS Series speakers, for example, have seen success in both live music (recently serving Deacon Blue, The Levellers, The Stranglers, Bjorn Again, Van Morrison and Jools Holland) and larger install applications (football grounds such as Chelsea, Sunderland, Southampton, Newcastle and Manchester United, as well as Cardiff's Millennium Stadium). Logic's presence at Frankfurt this year, however, represents a new phase in the company's development, as it introduces an innovative, compact line array system - the Ethos - and looks to expand its export activity.
The Ethos is aimed at the live market primarily, although its compact size and ground-stacking flexibility will also suit it to other applications including houses of worship and corporate events. The system consists of the main Ethos VA (vertically arraying) cabinet, with a dispersion of 120°H and up to 10°V (depending on splay angle) and a frequency response of 60Hz to 20kHz; the Ethos B2 - a 2 x 15" cabinet optimized for use from 40Hz to 150Hz; and the Ethos SB2 - a complementary 2 x 18" sub cabinet intended for ground-stacking only. Two SB2 cabinets are the same height when stacked as three B2s. The system is completed by a choice of four monitors (LM8, LM12, LM15 or LM20 models).
The VA, B2 and SB2 cabinets share a common width (780mm), enabling a variety of ground-stacking options, while for the VA and B2 an integrated flying system is included. A minimum array size would be three boxes, while a hang of six to 12
Previewed at SIB's Soundpower demo in Italy during March (see L&SI April), Proel's new Axiom vertical array system received its official launch at Frankfurt. The full-range AX 3210P cabinet is a passive, three-way, bi-amped system engineered for live concerts and fixed install sound reinforcement applications.
The cabinets feature two 10" woofers featuring ISV, or 'interleaved sandwiched voice coil' technology - and feature a die-cast aluminium basket with double ventilation for improved heat dissipation and reduced power compression. The HF section is internally divided into two sub-systems: an annular 4" film diaphragm handles the mid-range and a coaxially-mounted 2" diaphragm the high range. Frequency response is given as 63Hz to 20kHz. The cabinets measure in at 79.5cm in width, weigh 48kg each and feature a built-in flying system.
Tannoy announced the set-up of its own dedicated sales team covering the pro audio (commercial products) and residential audio markets in Germany. Matthias Exner, formerly of Peter Strüven GmbH, will be responsible for sales and marketing of professional products for the sound reinforcement and installation markets.
Product-wise, the company showed the latest additions to its V-Series of installation speakers - the compact V6, which was first seen at PLASA last year, but is now in full production.
New at Frankfurt was the 5.1 Sub15 - a multi-purpose active subwoofer with five additional powered outputs which, depending on the application, can drive five single or five pairs of speakers such as Tannoy i5 or i6 installation models or Reveal monitors. The 5.1 Sub15 is an active150W RMS sub with a substantial 15" (380mm) bass unit with on-board 5-channel amplification (5 x 75W RMS).
It's good to see the recently-reborn RCF back on the trade show circuit, and not just for the excellent Parmigiano Reggiano and San Giovese di Romagna which are so copiously dished out at its press gatherings.
Just three months on from his re-acquisition of the brand from Loud Technologies, RCF's Arturo Vicari was able to introduce new ranges of loudspeaker and amplification products for both commercial audio and pro audio applications. These include eight new compact speaker systems in the Art Series - a combination of both active and passive systems making for a flexible range of options for live, PA and band use, as well as AV applications and fixed installations. The R&D team has addressed the need for varying requirements for these applications: consequently, alternative full-grilled models are available for fixed installation, with the 'MI' versions offering pole-mount options, with matching sub-woofer systems for stage use.
The four active models use RCF's new 'True Active Extended Dynamics' (TAED) amplifier technology, based around 250W low and 50W high bi-amplified modules. These include the ART 312A, which uses a 12" woofer and 1" Neodymium compression driver with 250W of power to the woofer and 50W for the HF. The ART 315A is similar in specification, but offers a 15" woofer assembly and 1" HF compression driver. The ART 322A is a igh-performance model using a 12" woofer pairing up to a high-spec RCF Precision Series 2.5" diaphragm / 1.4" exit neodymium compression driver which, say RCF, provides enhanced HF clarity and defi
For the majority of us who sadly aren't part of the fitness community, the specialist audio needs of this group may not be immediately obvious. If you think that musical theatre performers are hard on their audio gear, imagine what kind of stress is placed on a microphone that's used all day for classes in a fitness centre. Sydney-based Aerobic Microphones (Aeromic) make waterproof microphones that are guaranteed to survive seven classes per day, every day, for their first year of use. Available in more than two dozen countries, in all regions, Aeromic also produce a variant for use in musical theatre.
Outline showed the new H.A.R.D. 115 SP. This self-powered, low-profile stage monitor employs a 15" woofer and a compression driver with a 2.56" diaphragm, loaded by the same parabolic acoustic reflector (patent pending) used on the H.A.R.D. 212 monitor, used on tour by Eric Clapton, Steve Howe and by top Italian artists such as Claudio Baglioni (see L&SI next month).
It's a two-way enclosure with a passive crossover and high-powered single-channel amplifier with DSP control. It offers high performance (135dB peak) and weighs just 25kg; it also has the same sound quality of H.A.R.D. 212, say Outline, with wide vertical and narrow horizontal dispersion, as well as the range's characteristic resistance to feedback. Just 39cm high - despite its components being vertically aligned, the unit offers a symmetrical horizontal dispersion, enabling artists to hear the same sound balance in any position on stage.
Renkus-Heinz celebrated its 25th Anniversary on 1 April - and broke out the bubbly to mark a quarter century of audio innovation. They also unveiled a new three-way, high output line array combining - for the first time - the company's proprietary line array technology with its pioneering CoEntrant Waveguide Topology.
Ralph Heinz, VP of R&D, said: "We have had amazing reactions to the PN102/LA, our first foray into line array design. Based on that experience, and to meet customers' demands for a very high power but reference quality system, we developed a unique Renkus-Heinz solution, combining two technologies with lightweight, high power amplification to build a new standard in high performance line array design."Also from Renkus-Heinz, the STLA/9 is a lightweight, 'full-size' self-powered line array module (the STXLA/9 is the passive version). With 139dB peak SPL broadband per module, the STLA/9 can handle the largest sound reinforcement applications - yet the self-powered version weighs in at under 200lbs (86.2kg).
R-H also announced that the company would be distributing EASERA, the Electronic and Acoustic System Evaluation and Response Analyzer from Software Design Ahnert GmbH.
EASERA provides a software-based audio measurement system featuring four independent modules - a measurement module, a signal generator, a real-time analyzer, and a post-processing module. Hardware requirements are minimal; the program will support complex and powerful data acquisition systems using up to 32 simultaneous inputs and outputs with individual volume controls, record
Alcons showed a range of new products, aimed at both touring and installation applications, including the LR16 line array module, featuring the RBN601 pro-ribbon HF driver on a 'morpher' waveguide. In addition to 'the Ribbon' system, the LR16Bass is a bass extension to the LR16, which can be flown or stacked.
Also new, the LR14, Alcons' ultra-compact line-array module, featuring the patented RBN401 pro-ribbon driver and double 6.5" cone transducers. Designed as either ultra-compact line-array system, or as an under-fill for the LR16, the LR14 has a dispersion pattern of 120° x 15°. The 800W peak power handling offers similar dynamic response as the LR16.
This year's show saw the launch of MC2 Audio's E45 power amplifier, the third in its E-Series of lightweight, touring/rental amplifiers. Aimed directly at the national and international touring market, it follows the successful introduction of the E25 and E15 last year. The E45 is rated at 2250W per channel into 4 ohms, built in a 2U chassis, and has all the sonic qualities and reliability of the MC and T Series amplifiers but without the physical weight, an advantage for touring. The switch-mode power supply is capable of delivering high peaks without any perceptible bass 'sag' at very low distortion and is kept within its safe operating area by the new, MC2 'intelligent' limiter, making it ideal for driving high power PA systems.
Main features include a digital power supply with a large power reservoir, proprietary-designed progressive switching rail output, proprietary current driven output stages for ultra high-definition sound, full power delivery over the entire audio bandwidth, lightweight aluminium construction, all-new low distortion limiters with adjustable threshold points for extra speaker protection, optional 24dB/octave Linkwitz Riley crossover cards and full DC, short circuit and thermal protection.
beyerdynamic (GB) announced it had taken on the distribution of two brands new to its distribution portfolio - Altec Lansing Professional and Powersoft - while at the same time showing some new developments from beyerdynamic itself. These included the first acoustical boundary microphone with USB connection - the MPC 70 USB - which features a low cut filter, adjustable gain and easily selectable operating modes such as Mic On/Off, PTT (Push-to-Talk) or PTM (Push-to-Mute). Also new from beyerdynamic and serving the conference market, is the SIS (Simultaneous Interpreting System) 1202 interpreter station - developed to allow two interpreters to work in the same booth, using either headsets or headphones and microphones.
UK - Dimension Audio, the audio division of the Avesco Group, has relocated from Wandsworth to Avesco's new corporate headquarters in Crawley, Sussex. Under new general manager, Mark Boden, the 12-year-old company has wasted no time in bringing an upgraded inventory to its new warehouse.
Boden took over from his long-time colleague - Colin Duncan - at the helm, when the latter departed recently to pursue his interest in flat-panel technology. "We had worked together for seven years, joining Dimension at the same time," Boden reflected. Of the new development, he rationalizes: "We are a highly-specialized audio company but being back in the bosom of the Avesco, alongside Creative Technology, will enable us to raise our profile. The CT office environment is great, with good back-office support and transport - in fact all the facilities we didn't have we now have access to."
This includes expanded warehousing, enabling Boden to significantly upgrade the company's inventory. Heading his shopping list is three new 32-channel (8-stereo) Midas Verona 8-bus mixing consoles. Qualifies Boden: "Midas is a good, reputable company and the Verona's build quality, EQ and preamps are of a high quality. The colour scheme immediately puts you in mind of the old Midas desks - but its ultra-compact size means its footprint is probably only two thirds of the size of a conventional desk. Also it has an internal power supply - but via the multipin we have been able to add an external linear supply as a safety precaution."

This relatively young company was launching the new version of its popular A-16 personal mixer, which enables the performer to create a custom monitor mix tailored to his or her personal needs. The monitor enables control over channel volume, grouping, pan, stereo spread and master volume and can create a unique monitor mix for any individual performer.
Up to 16 personal mixes can be saved and recalled as presets and it can be used to drive either floor wedge monitors, in-ear monitors, headphones or spot monitors. Further recent developments have resulted in the Aviom16/o-Y1 output card for the Yamaha digital console. This is a mini-YGDAI format card that fits into an expansion slot in Yamaha digital consoles. It allows the FOH engineer to assign and send 16 mono or eight stereo channels of audio in the digital domain to each performer on stage or in the studio directly from the console control surface. The development of the card has been lightning quick: Aviom began speaking with Yamaha just after Christmas, concluded the project in March and should be shipping by May.
UK - Leading audio specialist Autograph Sales has supplied and installed a complete Meyer Sound loudspeaker system at the Queen's University, Belfast, in its brand new and unique Sonic Arts Research Centre.
(see previous news).
The Sonic Laboratory Concert Hall, where the installation took place, has a steel mesh floor to allow diffusion from speakers above and below the audience, all of which are driven independently by ProTools. The system was set-up by Autograph Sales' technical department using Meyer Sound's SIM IIanalyzer to align the system.
A total of 32 Meyer Sound loudspeakers were supplied - comprising 16 UPJ-1Ps and 16 UPM-1Ps. Four 'rings' of eight speakers are either suspended or mounted on stands at different heights, while an additional four Meyer Sound UMS-1P subs were strategically placed around the venue. Further equipment included a custom rigging system designed by Autograph Sales, and hybrid power/signal cable from Reference Laboratories.
Michael Alcorn, director of the Sonic Arts Research Centre, was delighted with the result and commented: "Having created a near-silent working environment, the right choice of loudspeaker was essential. Autograph Sales conducted extensive noise tests and provided a demonstration of the Meyer Sound loudspeakers, proving they were the right cabinets for the job."
The Sonic Arts Research Centre was opened last month by the famous contemporary composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and the Concert Hall hosted its first performance, by John Chowning, the
UK - Supporting Role, the small business support consultancy for the event and entertainment industry headed by Marco van Beek, has appointed Andy Mace as a web and database programmer and IT support specialist. Coming from Star 106.6 FM, the local radio station for Maidenhead, Windsor and Slough, Mace's presence increases the company's ability to support small businesses in the event and entertainment industry by bringing in experience of a different sector of the industry, they say.
Mace also brings his specific knowledge of radio station-specific IT solutions, including TXTMaster, a SMS to website tool which allows presenters to read text messages from mobile phones from a centralized database which includes an address book lookup for frequent callers, and talkshow surveys.
Supporting Role was started over five years ago by Marco van Beek, who says he was frustrated by the lack of good, industry-aware, consultancy, help and advice in a number of areas, including IT, Health & Safety and CE Marking - providing smaller companies within the industry the "support" services that they are unable to provide internally. These include areas as diverse as Health & Safety, ISO9000, CE marking and compliance, project management and business consultancy.Van Beek comments: "Andy brings wider experience of different sectors of the business, broadening our palette of skills that we can offer clients. Many people in our industry are suspicious of outside consultants because we all feel most of the standard rules don't apply to us. Yet many of us are too busy to b
UK - Sennheiser recently announced the launch of this year's Unsigned Artists Contest. This is the forth year that Sennheiser has run the competition, which aims to track down the best young bands in the UK and give them as much exposure as possible.
This year's six finalists will perform on the big concert stage at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and the winners will not only get to perform live at Glastonbury 2005 but they will receive £2,500 cash, £2,500 worth of Sennheiser evolution G2 microphones and £500 worth of Sennheiser headphones. UK - The weekend of 25-28 March saw Tidy Weekender 5 descend upon the unusual venue of Pontins in Prestatyn. Four thousand hard-house clubbers were present on-site throughout the three-day event, with sound and lighting packages provided by South West Audio. SWA's production manager Mike Taylor took this opportunity to try out EM Acoustics' flagship product - the Quake subwoofer.
The main arena for the event held 2,000 people, and was powered by a 30kW system comprising 16 EAW KF850 mid/highs and 16 Quake subs. The horn-loaded Quakes were arranged in two blocks of six either side of the stage, with a four-unit block in the centre. EM Acoustics' director of R&D, Ed Kinsella, explains: "Due to the heavy weighting towards lower frequencies in music like hard-house, SWA used more Quake subs than would be necessary with other styles of music to achieve the desired effect. Using 16 units allowed them to get the real low end right to the back of the arena, and still maintain ample headroom."
The mid/high of the system was powered by Crest P-Series amplification, with all 16 Quakes being powered off a pair of Crest 9001 power amplifiers. XTA DP series processors were also used throughout. Mark Bott, SWA's operations manager, who was engineering the event, said of the new subs: "The low-end response from the Quake subs was fantastic. The program material at an event such as Tidy is very demanding, and with many of the DJs at the event also being producers, the sound has to be just right. Also, the clubbers are very educated when it comes to the sound they
UK - Linea Research was formed in 2003 to design, develop and market cutting-edge professional audio technology. Since its inception, the London-based company has been busy developing OEM technology and researching the way forward. Now, Linea is ready for its official launch into the world of pro audio.
Sales director Davey Smalley is joined on the board by Ben Ver (engineering) Paul Williams (R&D) and Pip Wilson (production). For over a decade, Ver and Williams have been responsible for a number of innovations in the power amplifier, DSP and audio networking fields, with Wilson bringing over 20 years' experience in manufacturing and quality control. Smalley, formerly sales manager at BSS Audio, explains the philosophy: "Our potency lies with integrating the key technologies of the future, initially focused towards high power amplifier modules for integration within OEM loudspeakers," he says. "Consequently we're concentrating on switching power supplies, PWM amplifiers, DSP and networking."
With these four important technologies, Smalley believes that Linea is well placed to provide flexible solutions to the industry. "We're not fixed in product strategy or routes to market - rather we are combining our design experience with these modern technologies to create the building blocks from which a range of complete of solutions will flow."
Linea's X-Pod series of loudspeaker power modules have already been adopted, not only by several well-known pro audio manufacturers but also high-end monitor and hi-fi companies. "We're working
UK - Manchester-based ACE PA Ltd. has purchased an Allen & Heath ML3000 VCA console to provide sound reinforcement for its medium to large events. The 40-channel console made its debut at BBC Music Live 2004 in Manchester's Exchange Square on 1 May, where ACE PA provided the PA system for a nine-hour live event.
"We selected the ML3000 because it fulfilled all the requirements without breaking the bank," commented ACE PA's Gary Jones. "This is the first VCA desk that ACE PA has ever owned and we are very impressed with the grouping capability. The 36 mono and six stereo format has the capacity to cover the medium to large events for which we predominantly cater. Furthermore, the ML3000's eight auxes provide the perfect solution when we have to control both monitor and FOH sound from the FOH position."
Manchester's BBC Music Live event commenced with classical performances from twelve international cellists from the Royal Northern College of Music, the tuba quartet Tubalate, contemporary classical strings from Litmus, and world-class tenor, Jon Christoloudou. More contemporary acts followed from pianist and singer, Aiden Smith, DJ Mark Rae with vocalists Veba, followed by two bands, The Bays and Toolshed.
For the climax of the event, two local bands - Cullain and Toss the Feathers - took to the stage, creating an Irish party atmosphere in preparation for a live link up to the main BBC Music Live event in Belfast, televised via a big screen in the Square. The Belfast event was broadcast around the world and featured Divine Comedy, Ronan Keatin
UK - The conversion of an underground arcade in Carlisle's old town has resulted in one of the first installations of the new Cerwin-Vega! Vision systems. Owners of Club Concrete, the Van Lierop family, were alerted to the new system by local Cerwin Vega dealer Peter Tyson's - who had earlier fitted out the family's other bar/restaurant operation, Fat Fingers. The 300-capacity subterranean nightclub majors on natural materials - concrete, slate, tiles, sandstone and reclaimed timber. John Van Lierop, and his sons Mark and Tony, thus wanted a natural-sounding PA, which also blended with the aesthetics - but also delivered a punchy bottom end.
Mick McCall, who runs the retailer's DJ department, recommended the system after being approached by Denis Phoenix of Cerwin Vega distributor Lamba, soon after the Vision series landed in the UK. Occupying the ultra-high performance segment of CV's Professional Audio division, the Vision range features five completely new designs specifically aimed at live sound reinforcement and non-engineered sound applications.
Four Vision VIS-218s (dual 18" a dual direct radiator) subs are ground-stacked, with four wall-mounted VIS-153 (single 15" 3-way system) in the dance area. Four Sat 8 (150W 8" 2-way mid/highs) are mounted on brackets in the long bar area, underpinned by a pair of the new ProStax PSX36 (high-impact, portable folded 15" sub). In the highly-specified DJ booth, a further Cerwin Vega Vision VIS-122 (single 12" coaxial stage monitor) provides the DJ with his reference sound. The system, which oper
UK - The Elbow Room - a hybrid of bar, club and pool hall with five venues in the UK, has recently opted for a KV2 Audio sound system for its Islington site, after Elbow Room's operations manager John Power met Duncan Baines of Xtreme AV to discuss plans for the venue.
Since it opened in 2000, the venue had employed a house system for day-to-day work, hiring in something more substantial for special events. As the special events grew, so did the need for a permanent system that could handle the growing list of international DJs and the succession of live bands.
Due to the increase in live performances and to provide bands with a suitable working area, Xtreme AV devised a portable stage, constructed in front of the DJ booth before each gig. This meant that the sound system had to be portable, so that the stacks could be moved from either side of the DJ booth (behind the stage) to either side of the stage area. This narrowed Baines' options to a handful of top-line speakers. Eventually, he asked KV2 Audio's Andy Austin-Brown If he would come and do a demonstration 'live' on a Friday night.
Baines explains: "When you are specifying a system for this type of venue, you have to consider carefully the range of possible usage and expectations. Ease of operation, flexibility in the moving and set up of the system and of course, playback and sound quality is paramount. To find a system that offers you all of this in one package is not as easy to provide as it may appear from the myriad of products on the marketplace today. Budget is always a major factor - anyone

UK - Neutrik UK Ltd has announced the opening of its new, purpose-built, 1,800sq.m manufacturing and sales facility at Westridge, Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The new factory has been built and designed to Neutrik's bespoke requirements to meet the ever-increasing demands of its expanding sales operation. The company says its decision to remain on the Island demonstrates a firm commitment to their skilled and dedicated workforce, without whom such an expansion would not have been possible.
Neutrik UK Ltd started on the Island in August 1986 in an array of small manufacturing and office units at Cowes, followed by an expansion move to Binstead in 1991. Further extensions to the product range soon followed, together with Neutrik's global flagship product range of professional audio connectors. Continued success and product range growth meant that the company soon out-grew both its Cowes and Binstead facilities, at which point the decision was taken to re-locate once again to purpose-built premises.
In the summer of 2002, the new director team at Neutrik, with full support from the parent company in Liechtenstein made the ultimate statement in confidence in both their 108 strong (and rising) Island workforce and Island business support structure by commencing the design and build of their new factory on the outskirts of Ryde. This new facility provides increased storage and manufacturing capabilities, improved staff facilities and ample room for further expansion. The new factory stands on only half the total land area (3.66 acres) purchased by Neutrik UK, enabling a
