UK - The popular Soundcraft LX7 console has received an upgrade to the LX7ii - both in terms of audio specification and cosmetics. The stylish new desk gets its looks from Soundcraft's MH3 and MH4 touring sound consoles, and includes a new frame, module ID graphics and end-cheeks.
Electronically, the LX7ii gains a new Soundcraft mic-preamp and EQ section, both designed by Soundcraft founder and electronics wizard Graham Blyth. Designated the GB30 Series, the new designs coincide with Soundcraft's 30 year anniversary and the new 4-band EQ with swept mid sections is based on the acclaimed EQ in the new MH3 and MH4 touring consoles. "The new GB30 mic pre on the LX7ii brings together some of the quality and precision of the mic pre's we use on our biggest touring desk, whilst retaining the cost-sensitivity demanded at this point in the market," says Blyth. "We're conscious that we must provide the best possible audio quality at the best price for the customer - we do not allow compromise - and it starts at the mic preamp.
Blyth continues: "The GB30 EQ, owing its heritage to the work we did on the new MH range, gives a steeper than usual slope on the fixed LF and HF sections, removing unwanted mid-frequency 'mush' and delivering a clearer sound. We've a unique, cost-effective design that brings high-end EQ into an affordable mixing console for the first time."
Other standard features of the LX7ii include frame sizes up to 32 mono inputs and four stereo inputs/returns with four groups, main stereo output and a dedicated mono output for centr
UK - ElectroVoice's elegant boutique loudspeakers, the EVID range, continue to make inroads to some of the trendiest bars and restaurants in the UK. Installation company Xtreme Audio Visual has recently provided a number of EVID 6.2s, the largest model in the range, for the bar area of Smollensky's restaurant in Canary Wharf.
Duncan Baines of Xtreme AV acknowledges that the ergonomics of the EVID units are an important selling point. "Visually, this is a very good-looking cabinet, and its design fits in really well with the décor in a smart interior like Smollensky's."
EVID 6.2s offer high performance as well as aesthetic appeal. Smollensky's commissioned the new EV installation because the bar area has replaced its background music with a DJ. For similar reasons, Xtreme AV has installed EVIDs at the Hub Bar in Colchester. "The bar only opened about a year ago," says Baines, "but now it's got a late licence and a DJ, and it needs a sound system which can take a lot more punishment. We've put in six EVID 6.2s, powered by Dynacord S1200s, and this will more than meet their audio requirements as well as looking appropriately stylish."

USA - EAW, a Loud Technologies Inc brand, recently announced a new series of arrayable loudspeakers incorporating a revolutionary coaxial MF/HF driver design to provide the most consistent coverage, over the widest possible frequency range. The new EAW AX series new coaxial MF/HF driver combines an 8" cone and a 1.4" exit compression driver. Both share a neodymium magnet while a sealed aluminum chassis acts as the heat sink for the entire assembly.
To achieve consistent coverage over the widest possible frequency range, the MF/HF driver assembly is coupled to a single horn, which occupies almost the entire front of the AX Series' enclosure. The EAW engineering team then incorporated their new Concentric Summation Array (CSA) technology, an advanced design based on their patented Radial Phase Plug, to solve the complex acoustic problems that generally prevent the coupling of a coaxial driver directly to a horn. The result, say the company, is a smooth frequency response, consistent polar patterns over a wide operating bandwidth and exceptional vocal clarity.
The AX Series speakers are a true tri-axial design. As such, a pair of 12" woofers are located on opposite ends of the enclosure, creating an acoustic origin on axis with the coaxial MF/HF driver. The spacing between these woofers provides exceptional pattern control at low frequencies.
To facilitate construction of horizontal and vertical arrays, EAW engineers designed the AX enclosure with trapezoidal angles on all four sides. Furthermore, the MF/HF horn can be rotated, allowing the pattern

USA - Even the best live sound engineers can use a little help every now and then. Mark Ballard, a UK-based independent front-of-house engineer and system technician, reports that he never leaves home without Metric Halo's SpectraFoo sound analysis, metering, and control software. "It just works on everything and anything," says Ballard. "I take it on every show."
Ballard has been using SpectraFoo's SpectraGraph, SpectraGram, and the Transfer Function applications for nearly five years, during which time he has seen live sound technology advance to such an extent that Metric Halo's analysis software has become indispensable when fine-tuning a system. At a recent corporate show, he reports: "I took about three or four frequencies out, just minute slivers. I gained 6 or 8dB of headroom compared to doing it with a graphic equalizer just from being that accurate."
SpectraFoo provides standards-based level metering, high-speed, high-resolution spectral analysis, transfer function measurement, the unusual Phase Torch, correlation metering, triggerable waveform display, power balancing, and a variety of power, envelope and spectral histories and phase analysis on any number of input or output channels.
Ballard notes that SpectraFoo's precision is now matched by performance sound system technology. "Before, you'd be hacking things out and it would make no difference. Now, when you make a change, it does make a difference and you can actually hear it. I also find that you now have to be far subtler than you ever were with the older sys

Germany - Few TV series in recent years have got people so worked up - and entire nations so riveted - as Big Brother, which first aired on the Dutch channel Veronica, and few series have enjoyed quite the same success internationally, as home-grown versions of the show have sprouted in countries all over the world. The harbinger of the current 'reality TV' boom, Big Brother made the likes of Zlatko and Jürgen into national celebrities in Germany - only to see them plunge back into obscurity within a few months. The same phenomenons, and the same phenomenal ratings, have been seen all over Europe and even in America. Love it or loathe it, you have to admit that on a technical level, the production is first rate.
With multiple camera units positioned all round the set and much of the material being broadcast live, a large production team working flat-out is needed to film, record, edit and broadcast the drama. All this requires a high level of behind-the-scenes coordination. To provide a smooth and reliable solution to the complex communications logistics, production teams in Germany, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Holland, Norway and Bahrain have all opted for broadcast and communications tools from Telex. Manuel Brico, product manager for Telex E.A.M.E., explained why: "Representing leading companies in the broadcast sector, the teams producing Big Brother had no desire to take risks. The locations are equipped with Telex AdamCS matrices with between 32 x 32 and 56 x 56 ports. Depending upon the size of the production and the topology of the
UK - Continuing the series of successful opera productions staged at London's Royal Albert Hall, the presentation of La Boheme continues to build on the high production values set in previous years. Directed by internationally renowned Francesca Zambello and featuring Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by David Parry, the piece played in the round in the splendid surroundings of the Royal Albert Hall to audiences totaling around 50,000 people during February and March.
Once again, Out Boards' TiMax delay matrix system was specified because of its unique localization capabilities, enabling the vocal reinforcement system to be as transparent as possible while delivering the highest levels of intelligibility. Remaining in the digital domain between the D5 console and TiMax, thus removing unnecessary D-A and A-D conversion, further enhanced quality.
Out Boards' Robin Whittaker who was on site to set up the TiMax and program the show commented: "There is no doubt that the improvements that we have achieved over the years with this kind of production have been as a direct result of better accuracy measurements and tightening up on over-delay factors used as well as using more closely spaced image definitions."

All presenters were wearing the highly regarded Sennheiser SK50 radio microphone.
Audio Alliance also supplied a further system of d&b E3s, ins
Denmark - On 16 March 2004 Seelite A/S and DPA SoundCo A/S signed a collaboration agreement and to simplify business procedures and the communication flow for customers and partners, DPA SoundCo will move their office to Seelite's administration building in Copenhagen on 1 April 2004. The agreement, will strengthen the two companies' position on the market resulting in a collaboration that makes it one of Scandinavia's largest suppliers of technical turnkey solutions for the event and entertainment industry, concerts and theatres, fairs and exhibitions, film and TV production and the corporate market.
"The fact that we share office is not to be interpreted as a merger between Seelite and DPA SoundCo. We remain two independent companies merely sharing office, skills and resources", says Sten Adlet Jensen, managing director of DPA SoundCo. He adds: "We have chosen each other with great care. Years of mutual experience and knowledge of each other lie as ballast and guarantee for a successful collaboration to our customer's and business partner's benefit. The office share is the materialization of the bonds between us and we are very pleased".
The collaboration agreement meets the common strategy of the two companies to meet an increasing demand for cost effective supply of technical turnkey solutions and optimize supply capacity of specialized equipment through local and international partners
"For the past 1 ½ years, Seelite has determinedly worked towards realizing our strategy to supply turnkey solutions to our customers and partners.
UK - Nottingham based concert PA hire company, Sound of Music Ltd, recently purchased a 40-channel Allen & Heath ML4000 live sound VCA console to update its existing hire equipment.
"The events for which we are providing sound reinforcement are increasingly high profile and high-tech making our original desk rather dated. We needed an innovative console with plenty of AUX sends, dual functionality to handle monitors from FOH if we needed to without compromising on FX sends and superb features like VCA capability for grouping," comments Sound of Music's audio engineer, Sash Pochibko.
"When Allen & Heath launched the 'B' option offering extra stereo channels for the ML series at the PLASA show last year, the ML4000 was the ideal mixer for our needs. Not only did it fall in our price bracket, it fulfilled our spec requirements. The brand status also complements our stock of Nexo Alpha-e loudspeakers and Camco amplifiers, as well as the ML3000 already on our kit list."
Recent events where Sound of Music Ltd. has provided sound reinforcement using the ML4000 include, Bjorn Again at the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, London with the ML4000 FOH and ML3000 on monitors; the live band stage at Warwick University Ball at the Metropole Hotel, Birmingham; Westlife performing at The Powerhouse in Newcastle, where the ML4000 mixed FOH and monitors on stage; and Beenie Man at the Isis, Nottingham.

UK - Continuity was the key to this year's BRITs, with the familiar and experienced production teams brought in once again by producer Mick Kluczynski of MJK Productions to create what was perhaps the slickest BRITs show to date. Presented by Cat Deeley, the show included performances from Black Eyed Peas, The Darkness (who stole the show with three awards) and 50 Cent, as well as a duet of the Cure's 'Lovecats' from newcomer Katie Melua and jazz sex-thimble Jamie Cullum.
Sound
The hugely experienced Derrick Zieba was brought in again by MJK to design and co-ordinate the sound system. Also returning to the fray, Britannia Row Productions provided the sound and co-designed the system with Zieba, this year fielding an EV X-line speaker system. Zieba has been an enthusiastic user of Yamaha mixing desks for many years and was one of the first designers to make the transition from analogue to digital. He was also involved with the recent MTV awards where, for the first time, Zieba used a Yamaha PM1D at each end of the multi-core without backup. "It's the only desk reliable enough to give me confidence to do this," he said.
Three Yamahas were used on the night: a DM2000 provided the main PA feed, driven by sound engineer Dave Bracey, while PM1Ds were used for front-of-house and monitors, manned by Brit Row's team of sound engineers Andy Robinson, Kirsten Smith and Anthony King, who either mixed or assisted the various performers' visiting engineers. The Yamaha digital desks have been used for the last two years, replacing up to 16 analogue mixing de
Germany - During the recent tour by the group PUR, one tool played a key role in communications: the Telex BTR-700. The Leonberg-based radio equipment specialists Bareither+Raisch was responsible for the communication between technicians during the recent tour by what is currently Germany's most successful pop group, Pur. The venues were 40 of the largest concert halls in Germany. Bareither+Raisch's most important behind-the-scenes weapon, according to Stefan Raisch, was the BTR-700 from Telex. When the tour was over, Raisch expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the system: "The BTR-700 provided perfect communication between the stage, FOH and the follow spot operators arranged in echelon behind the FOH, all of whom were a considerable distance apart. Quite aside from saving us the time and expense of setting up long cable runs, the BTR-700 impressed everyone - the PUR technicians included - with its ease-of-use."
The first gig in Sinsheim in mid October 2003 soon made clear that in XXL halls, an additional or alternative antenna solution would further enhance the quality of communication. With 25 years of experience in communications technology, the Bareither+Raisch technicians were able to design and implement - in a matter of days, fortunately - a new network capable of supporting dual antennae for both transmission and reception. As it turned out, two Telex omnidirectional emitters provided perfect converge for the FOH and follow-spot locations, whilst a pair of Telex ALP-450 directional antennae provided flawless and reliable coverage of
Switzerland - A sophisticated new multi-level dance venue recently opened close to the Swiss city of Lucerne. The technical infrastructure features a successful integration of equipment from the Harman Pro product portfolios, with contractors Habegger Media Performance AG selecting BSS Soundwebs as the preferred routing matrix and DSP control.
Habegger specified a pair of BSS 9088ii (respectively configured for Mic and Line), with local remote control provided by two BSS 9012 'Shrimp' wall panels. JBL Control Contractor series loudspeakers form the main PA system across the venue's three storeys, powered by Crown CTs amplifiers, and equipped with a dbx DriveRack 260. The club consists of two dance floors, which can be operated independently, or with a single sound source. In addition there is a lounge, four bars and further different small areas and alcoves covered by JBL Control 30's. A pair of EON 15's provides the DJ monitor sound. Dr. W.A. Günther Audio Systems, Swiss distributors for all the Harman Pro brands, supplied all the equipment.
