Italy - An Outline sound system consisting of self-powered Micra Reflex enclosures and KW-15 subwoofers (Kanguro system) was chosen for installation in the innovative multimedia flagship stores opened in Milan and Rome by Telecom Italia, Italy's national leader in the information and communication technology field and one of the most solid industrial groups in Europe.
Naomi Campbell and Ettore, the "talking" dog in the group's publicity spots, were at the inauguration of the Milan store in December. Mauro Sentinelli, general manager of TIM, and Giuseppe Sala, general manager of T.I. Wireline, were at the Rome event in Piazza Colonna, the square that hosts the Italian Parliament. The aim of these two new venues, designed as 'multimedia workshops', is to present in an innovative way all the new products of the Group (Telecom Italia, Tim and Telecom Italia Media), including the world of TV - La7, MTV, news from APcom and digital experimentation - under one roof.
As far as the audio is concerned, the client's expectations were clear: sound reproduction as accurate as studio monitors, combined with great dynamic capacity, ensuring a high physical impact, say Outline.

UK - Allen & Heath's iDR DSP system has been installed to manage the communications and audio requirements of Tussauds Group's new Splash Landings waterpark hotel at Alton Towers. The new system integrates and administers all audio requirements from paging and alarms to conferences and entertainment within the new complex and Alton Towers' existing hotel.
Bose Professional Systems Division carried out the audio installation, which covers 31 zones including receptions, shops, changing rooms, toilets, corridors, restaurants, lifts, conference facilities and the main pool area. Four iDR-8 networked units were installed at three stations around the complex, providing up to 27 inputs/outputs for the numerous audio requirements. PL-4 wall plates give rotary, switch and infrared control and access to the system is also available via a laptop from any of the three racks, enabling changes to parameters such as EQ, volume and routing to be made remotely. Furthermore, local monitors in each rack can source from any part of the system.
The installation makes extensive use of the iDR Switch, as switch closures operated from pager panels, conference room dividers and the pool's panic buttons, change patches in the system to allow announcements, zone configuration and messages. The venue also uses mobile racks containing equipment such as a mixer, CD and mics; these connect to 5-pin XLR wall plates with pins 1, 2 and 3 carrying audio with 4 and 5 shorted in the output lead from the rack. Pins 4 and 5 are connected to the iDR Switch so that when the rack output cable is inserte
UK - Stage Electrics has announced the launch of its new website, which combines information on all the services offered by the company, with key data on products in their extensive hire and sales inventory. David Whitehead, Stage Electrics' managing director said: "The new website is the first phase of an ongoing plan to provide customers with a 'one stop' approach to gaining knowledge on the technical equipment and services we can provide."
An added feature for the technicians in the industry is the incorporation in the Hire section with useful information on some of the equipment, such as weight, lamp, power rating, number of DMX channels etc. There is also a facility for technical manuals to be downloaded.
Linda Moore Stage Electrics sales and marketing manager said: "We believe the site is easier to navigate, we wanted it to be bold and dynamic, providing our customers with an extension of the services we offer, whilst not losing that all important human element of picking up a phone to contact us for further information and help. If you need to contact us the site contains a detailed company directory and contacts list."

Japan - TryAudio's Masaaki Azuma has taken delivery of a DiGiCo D5 Live 56EX for his live operations in Japan, purchased from Japanese pro audio supplier, ComodoMattina. "I knew of the D5's existence from my overseas friends in the PA business and first saw the D5 at the Frankfurt Musik Messe," says Azuma. "I was given a 15-minute 'how to use' explanation and was surprised that the D5 not only has a method of operation like an analogue mixing console, but is also very easy to set up. The D5 56EX version has many functions and doesn't take up a large amount of space at the mix position.
He continued: "I took a big risk with the D5, because we are the first user in Japan. But it has many advantages such as fantastic sound quality, clear sound image, easy operation and a variety of dynamics that analogue consoles do not have - this made it an easy choice. After extensively using the D5 in many applications, I feel it is the number one digital mixing system. Its many mechanical, electronic and software features place it way ahead of anything else available today."
TryAudio also took delivery of a DiGiTracs hard disk multi-track recorder to develop a new market for live concert recording in Japan. "Not only does it make recording 56 tracks of live material easy and convenient by way of two BNC MADI cables," commented Azuma. "It also provides additional, and invaluable, audio reference points during system set up and sound check."
TryAudio provides services to major Japanese tours and festivals, and to major international
UK - The latest CCS 800 Ultro analogue discussion system from Bosch Security Systems features built-in digital acoustic feedback suppression to ensure there is no annoying acoustic howl in conferences or discussions. Conference units such as the CCS 800 Ultro incorporate a microphone and a loudspeaker so there is always the possibility of feedback depending on volume levels etc. The new digital feedback suppression facility instantly suppresses any feedback interference right at the point of generation and prevents it from being fed into the system. As it is fully automatic, it acts much faster than any operator using a control unit.
According to Bosch, it's like having a skilled sound engineer permanently built into the unit. None of the participants will notice the sound adjustments - they simply benefit from howl-free sound whether speaking in a soft or a loud voice, with the same clarity and distinction for listeners. The CCS 800 Ultro is ideal for conferences in hotels, training centres or schools, meetings in agencies or government administrations, board meetings in industry or congresses.
In its basic form, the CCS 800 Ultro discussion system handles up to 50 delegate units, but Bosch also offers enhanced solutions for up to 150 delegate units. In addition, every unit of the CCS 800 Ultro has a double socket for two separate headphones allowing two delegates to share a unit using a single microphone on a long flexible stem - effectively doubling the number of simultaneous participants at a conference without any inconvenience.Up to four microphones can be
UK - The recent Asian Music Awards, held at London's Hammersmith Palais, saw the installation of KV2's revolutionary ES sound system by BEDA nominated installers, 52nd Street.
Looking for an improvement in overall sound quality and coverage at the venue, the KV2 system was physically dwarfed by 28 boxes of an existing NEXO house system installed five years ago, and in replacing it with only Six stacks of the more compact ES system, the management and promoters were interested if not slightly nervous as to what the results would be.
"At 2500 capacity everything tells you that these small speakers should not be enough, but like so many other KV2 experiences, the reality was a jaw dropping, word eating one" said KV2's Jonathan Reece-Farren As the Palais promotions and events co-ordinator, Atif Malik put it "Our sound proof Glass Bar isn't sound proof anymore, but the system sounds great"
The biggest improvements were in coverage, and clarity, particularly important for the multitude of events that the Palais host on a weekly basis. For the less discerning an increase in overall level, and stomach churning tightly controlled bass were order of the day on the dance floor, not to forget the ultimate "DJ proof" limiting system that claims to temper even the wildest Anthem spinning speaker sadists. Over the following weeks the system was used for student nights, General Club, as well as the famous School Disco, and Carlton T.V awards.

UK - VME Ltd. supplied an Allen & Heath ML4000 as part of the PA system for the ITV programme, That's Entertainment, which aired in Northern regions in early December. The programme, hosted by former comedy favourites Cannon and Ball and featuring Duncan Norvelle and Duggie Brown, is a variety show that resurrects the traditional performances of the Seventies recently stylized in the hugely popular comedy series, Phoenix Nights.
"We toured three Northern venues," says VME's Dion Davie, "the Batley Frontier Club, The Willows in Salford and The Gosforth and District Club, Newcastle. The technical requirements were varied, as there was an array of acts from stand-up comedians and magicians to live bands. We used a PA System which consisted of a Kling & Freitag loudspeaker system, Line 212 Amps from Lab Gruppen, Apex processors, mixed through a 32-channel ML4000 VCA live sound console."
"The ML4000 really fitted the bill; it is a great desk for touring as it is compact in size but has a lot of features. We find the VCA function invaluable for controlling multiple channel groupings, which can be monitored from the VCA master faders. We used every single channel on the desk and gave it the ultimate test for this live broadcast show."

International - One of the features of David Bowie's vocal performance during his present A Reality Tour has been the way in which FOH engineer Pete Keppler has been able to iron out any inconsistencies. He was able to move the vocal treatment onto a BSS Audio DPR-901 Mk2 after speaking to Bryan Olson at Firehouse Productions in New York - who supplied some of the equipment for the tour. Keppler, who doubles as Bowie's studio and live engineer, realized he would need a de-esser for the artist's live work to negate any sibilance. "When Bryan suggested the DPR-901 I remembered I had used one a long time ago - but the first model didn't have the side-chain monitoring function."
But the Mk2 contains four non-interactive bands of frequency-selective compression or expansion. And Keppler says that when he upgraded to this during production rehearsals he fell in love with the dynamic processor's ability to provide a visual reference for the individual frequencies he needed to work on.
Pete Keppler said: "Bowie is generally great with mic technique but his timbre can change a bit and he will suddenly sing a foot away from the mic. If he's working the mic up close the DPR-901 is great for getting rid of proximity, and you can notch out the sibilant frequencies rather than compress the whole high end. There are certain peaks in his vocal range and the DPR-901 will let me work on those particular frequencies, which makes limiting unnecessary."
BSS pioneered this style of Dynamic EQ with the original DPR-901, basing it on the subtractive VCA top

USA - Cadac Electronics Plc reports on a number of new US shows and tours, featuring R-Type and J-Type Live Production Consoles, shipped by rental companies Masque Sound & Recording, ProMix Electrotec, and Sound Associates.
Masque Sound's new touring division - Masque Live - is headed up by long-time sound designer and touring audio engineer, Lucas "Rico" Corrubia Jr. First out for Masque Live was a tour with R&B supremo Brian McKnight, using R-Type consoles for FOH and monitors, plus L-Acoustics V-Dosc loudspeakers powered by Camco amplifiers and proprietary Valvotronics tube preamps, limiters and parametric equalizers. Sound engineer Glen Odagawa said: "It is the closest thing to mixing in a studio I have ever experienced. After mixing on Masque's system, I have been so spoiled, I can never go back."
Two new shows are set to open around the US this month, complete with Cadac J-Types and sound systems supplied by ProMix Electrotec. In Los Angeles, Baz Luhrmann's Tony Award-winning Broadway production of La Bohème opens at The Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, moving across the Atlantic to London later in the spring. Second on the bill is Fiddler on the Roof - opening at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre and starring Alfred Molina as Tevye. ProMix Electrotec also supplied a brand new 101-slot J-Type for the Broadway production of Wicked, which opened at The Gershwin Theatre in October 2003. Sound design is by Tony Meola, with the show featuring a cast of 34 performers, with a 24-piece band. The J-Type console is specified with a
UK - Idea Audio was recently commissioned to design and build seven sets depicting the story of Joss Merlin, the landlord of Jamaica Inn, on Bodmin Moor. Six of the sets were in close proximity to each other and as a result, the audio had to be clear and accurate, with controlled dispersion to avoid spillage into the adjacent booths (Idea Audio had experienced a similar scenario when installing the Tales from the City exhibition at the Plymouth Museum).
The booths at Jamaica Inn were themed with life-sized models and artefacts, and as such, concealing the audio and lighting equipment became a real challenge. Idea found the solution in a design for the booth ceilings that incorporated a full width cupboard above each, in order to house the control systems.
In most instances, there was a step in the ceiling sufficiently large to discreetly fit a pair of Work Studio 3 loudspeakers (along with the necessary lighting). Other sets contained 'hiding places' large enough to fit one or two Work Studio 3s. Idea director, Ian Dixon said: "We decided to use the Work Studio range of speakers as their sonic quality and 100V line compatibility made them a natural choice, to power these, we used an Australian Monitor IC30 amplifier in each of the first six sets. At 30W, they are exactly the right size for the application and they don't take up as much room as standard 19" units." The amplifiers take signals from a minidisk based control system.
Lighting is mostly low voltage with the odd special effect - all controlled from Zero 88 Alcora desks and NJD DPX12/4 D

USA - A D5 Live FMX (front-of-house and monitor) console supplied by Eighth Day Sound of Cleveland, Ohio, is providing the ideal digital mixing solution for Duran Duran's current world tour.
At the end of 2003, the re-formed 80s rock band sold out in the US, then travelled to New Zealand and Australia, where they played solo and in support of another D5 user, Robbie Williams on his Australian tour. The US leg of the tour played small- to mid-sized theatres and a combination of theatres and stadiums with Williams in New Zealand and Australia.
Front-of-house engineer is Scottie Pakulski with Simon Higgs on monitors, Jim Corbin - crew chief/system tech and Trevor Waite - system tech. "I'm feeding the PA as four stereo zones: V-Dosc, dV-Dosc, in-fills, and subs," comments Pakulski. "We are configured for 96 inputs and I am using just the internal effects and processing of the D5 and XTA DP226 crossovers for time correction - no outboard effects, processing, etc - and they all sound amazing. I believe I'm the first one to do this in a tour situation."
The D5 Live FMX system gives a full 112 mic inputs on stage, with a work surface for monitors and a work surface for FOH, both with their own local DiGiRacks. The Gain Tracking (patent pending) feature allows either console operator to change any input gain without affecting the sound balance on either console, and is also selectable on each channel independently. Three 150m drums of fibre optic cable are provided to allow for a digital split and full redundancy of the fibre multicore.

UK - Meyer Sound's UK distributor Autograph Sales has recently supplied over 50 M1D ultra-compact curvilinear array loudspeakers to a number of venues around the UK and Europe, for theatrical events as well as permanent installations. The most spectacular venue to receive 10 of these compact cabinets, was the new East Winter Garden, a stunning glass building that will be used for public performances and events, located in London's Heron Quays District of Canary Wharf.
This came after the successful use of the M1D on the Berlin production of Les Miserables, which saw Autograph Sales' sister company Autograph Sound Recording purchase 30 boxes, followed by a further order for 28 cabinets, to be used on the upcoming West End show Jailhouse Rock.
The M1D, the smallest self-powered line array enclosure in Meyer Sound's M Series, was also specified for installation at Colchester's Mercury Theatre, along with Meyer Sound UPM-1Ps and USW-1Ps. B&H Syscom was the chosen installer, after working with Autograph Sales and the Meyer Sound product range for more than 15 years.
Mike Mann, technical manager for Autograph Sales, explains: "The East Winter Garden chose the M1D over and above other loudspeakers, because of its low distortion and lightweight, unobtrusive appearance, which is ideal for a stylish glass building, with multiple uses."

USA - Sennheiser Electronic Corporation and TL Audio have mutually agreed to terminate their distribution agreement effective 1 January 2004. While the well-respected British manufacturer of tube-based signal processing and mixing equipment enjoys high brand recognition overseas, Sennheiser and TL Audio executives mutually concluded that the task of implementing a full-scale marketing program in the US at this time would require a more robust level of sales and distribution support than had been anticipated. Therefore, the two companies have agreed to part ways.
This decision will enable TL Audio to pursue a distribution partner more in line with their aggressive sales goals while allowing Sennheiser to focus on other ongoing initiatives. The decision was based solely on marketing and distribution issues and was not related in any way to the company's products, cultures or personnel, says the joint statement. While Sennheiser will continue to take orders on its existing limited inventory of TL Audio products, customer inquiries should be addressed directly to TL Audio until the company names a new US distribution partner.

UK - Canegreen provided the PA system for The Tweenies Live!, entertaining families across the UK. The BBC's popular children's characters performed 27 shows at four arenas, Braehead Ice Arena, Glasgow, Birmingham's NIA, Sheffield Arena and Wembley Arena, with several shows at each venue through December and January.
The PA for the theatrical and musical spectacular was a complex affair and although this was the third year Canegreen have supplied the system, team leader and front-of-house engineer Mike Downs was kept on his toes at all times. The Tweenies Live! production manager, Nigel Mousley explained: "These are big venues to fill with sound without it being too loud for the children. Mike [Downs] in very conscientious to ensure all of our audience get a good sound, wherever their seat. The Tweenies characters have high-pitched voices that go from monologues to them all screaming - so it's not easy to mix and Mike succeeds in getting them heard clearly throughout."
Mousley continued: "Canegreen once again maintained a very high standard with our sound, it's a great sounding system. They also provide a very complicated comms system for communication between the artists, animatronics operators and production team . . . and their technician, Jesse Godolphin, was right on the ball."
The PA system supplied by Canegreen was designed by Pete Hughes to ensure sound reached all part of the arenas. To achieve this, various components of Canegreen's Meyer speaker system were used. The 'main' system consisted of five Meyer MSL4 SP cabinets flying a

Thailand - Thailand's leading jazz guitarist, Prode Tanapat, has recently chosen Audient to help bring his live music to audiences across the world. His self-titled album, which was released this month on the Warner Music (Thailand) label, includes two live tracks, 'Daddy's Tune' and 'Back Home', both of which were recorded and mixed using Audient consoles; namely the Audient ASP8024 and live mixing console, Aztec.
"We chose Aztec for the live recording because it always maintains the integrity of the signal path during production, the preamps are very clean and access to the record outputs via D-Sub is very convenient," explains Jack Pattanatabut, owner of rental company Jack Sound. He continues: "We mixed the two live tracks in the studio on the Audient ASP8024 so that Aztec's audio quality was not compromised. The mix on the ASP8024 was quick and easy and the it guarantees fantastic results!"

USA - The US Patent Office has awarded Meyer Sound its 17th US patent, this time for the rigging system used on the M3D line array and M3D-Sub directional subwoofer. The patent recognizes the rigging system's innovations including the CamLink system, which allows splay angles to be changed more easily than in other rigging systems, say Meyer.
The system features a rigid design, which offers numerous advantages - no pullback cable, often required by other systems, is necessary. Without pullback cables, cabinet angle adjustments can be accomplished without having to release the array, while the rotating cam at the rear of the frame means that only the front of the cabinet need be adjusted to change the splay angle; no parts need to be exchanged. Rigid mounting also enables arrays to be transported intact, maintaining cabinet splaying, saving truck space, and simplifying setup.
There is no need to lay array components horizontally on stage and assemble them, arrays (typically in modules of two or three cabinets) are simply rolled out of the truck, attached to the hoist cables, and flown. Additional modules can be easily attached, as needed, an invaluable feature for a production playing venues that require arrays of different sizes. A transition bar allows downfill speakers to be hung from the bottom of an array, and all rigging linking components are stowed within the end frame itself or remain captive in use.
Meyer Sound was granted its first patent, for a method of lowering distortion in horns, only three months after the company was founded in 1979. Since then
UK - SSE Hire's investment in digital audio technology continues with the purchase of two Yamaha PM1D digital mixing desks for Sarah Brightman's upcoming Harem Tour which kicks off early this year in Mexico.
Brightman's FOH engineer Colin Boland specified the Yamaha after trying a range of alternative digital consoles. He commented: "Having used Yamaha equipment for many years I find that the layout, programming and facilities follow a logic that has been consistent and fits in with the way I work. Also having used the PM1D on several previous tours I have been impressed with the performance, sound, reliability and backup."
The particular requirements of the show, with its large number of inputs, made gain control and the ability to add inserts, effects and recording feeds at both ends of the multicore imperative. Thus each console has its own set of 96-channel inputs and DI08. It also has the advantage that both desks are complete stand-alone systems.
SSE's hire director Emma Barwell added: "The Yamaha PM1D has quickly established itself as one the most popular touring digital consoles on the market and we are happy to have an opportunity to add them to our range of digital consoles. The support and advice from Yamaha has been outstanding."
