The Midas distributor for Finland, Oy Hedcom, have recently supplied a 52-input Midas Legend 3000 to the Crazy Reindeer (Hullu Poro) club in Lapland as part of a larger AV installation completed late last year, which also includes three video screens with multiple cameras and a Nexo Alpha E sound system. Located in a ski resort way above the Arctic Circle, the Crazy Reindeer Arena is a 1,500-capacity club/live venue which also offers full conference facilities during the day as well as saunas and a jacuzzi. In addition to the Arena, the Crazy Reindeer complex includes hotels, restaurants and an extensive leisure programme.
Oy Hedom's Ari Manninen explained that versatility and reliability were strong factors in the decision-making process. "During the season there is a show every night and the place is packed out, so the desk will be working pretty hard," said Manninen. "Midas is the number one brand in the world, and the fact that Legend offers XL4 preamps and XL3 EQ in such an affordable format was a very attractive proposition. There was also the fact that it is so flexible, with the ability to handle front-of-house or monitors or both at once for occasions when no monitor engineer is present. In fact, the client asked that the console be supplied as a full touring package so that when it's not working in the Arena it can go to local festivals and other events during the summer months."

The much-anticipated new Bond film, the 20th film in the series, is currently in production at Pinewood, near London. Die Another Day, produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli and directed by Lee Tamahori, will see Pierce Brosnan return in his fourth outing as James Bond, and will be released in the UK on November 22nd 2002.
As usual, the film set is closely guarded and few details of the plot or its characters are available, but significant quantities of custom and pre-made Van Damme VGA cable have been ordered by Chris McBride, the film's computer and video supervisor. "We're using Van Damme cabling both for on-screen and off-screen applications," explains Chris. "Our department provides all the on-set video and computer requirements, working with the shooting crew. And we also supervise the on-screen screens, those seen in the film."
As in many, if not all, Bond movies, the British Secret Service and the villains ranged against it work in high-tech environments. "Van Damme cable has been used for all the computers and videowalls in these control centres, including a 30ft wide LED videowall used outdoors. It's a completely reliable, high-quality cable choice for us, which also proves cost-effective."

Funktion One has always had a love of dance music. Tony Andrews' loudspeaker designs from the 1970s and 80s were mostly designed using funk music from the likes of James Brown, Sly Stone, and Parliament. In response to the combined reaction of the current dance world suggesting a ‘no holds barred’ design approach, the company has developed a sonically and visually imposing ‘stack’ of matched components.
Fundamentally, the dance stack is a four-way system with sub bass, bass/low-mid, mid-range and high frequency. It uses 24dB/octave crossover slopes and time alignment. Equalization, being an unnecessary evil, is not required, say the company. Funktion One’s David Bruml expands on the design background: "To make sure of the low end, we have a newly designed 2 x 18" infrabass - patent pending - dealing with the ‘weight’ part of the bass from 20Hz to 65Hz, whereupon we move to a hybrid horn-loaded 15" which takes care of bass and low mid, the speed part, from 65Hz to 280Hz. This combination for the low end needs the extra power in the mid provided by the new 10" axhead which handles from 280Hz right up to 5KHz. The remaining high frequencies are handled by the Funktion One-designed 1" compression driver."
The Dance Stack will be demonstrated in the Mayfair Suite on the Mezzanine level of Earls Court 1. Funktion One can be found on stand T18.
When the new dance club Rehab opened in Leeds this month, it positively reflected the changing DJ requirements for audio processing. Aside from recognizing the growing popularity of the straight tone arm, with the incorporation of a pair of Stanton’s STR8-100s into DJ mission control, it followed the lead of other pioneering British clubs by installing Stanton’s flagship VRM-10 mixer, with valve preamp and built-in filter. All products were supplied by the company’s UK distributor, Lamba plc.
Most Technical’s Dave Parry - mastermind behind the technology at London superclub Fabric - acted as technical consultant on the Rehab project. The Stanton install comes a month after Lamba plc appointed Marquee Audio as their new professional dealers, to further increase their exposure at the top end. The move is already paying off, and this month sees the installation of a pair of STR8-100 turntables alongside a Stanton RM-100 6U DJ mixer and S-650 dual CD player in a Stanton-dominated front end at the new Marquee Club in Islington.

Specialist audio supplier to the corporate and entertainment market, Delta Sound, has recently added a Legend 3000 to its inventory of Midas consoles, which now totals five Heritage 1000s and two Heritage 3000 consoles in a variety of frame sizes. Since its arrival at Delta Sound, the Legend 3000 has already been out on a number of prestigious events including the Commonwealth Games, for which Delta Sound was principle audio contractor. Other events include the Microsoft Tech-Ed conference in Lisbon, an annual event with over 5,000 delegates, and an accounting conference in Vienna for Braxton (formerly Deloitte Touche). The company is currently in service at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh for the Edinburgh festival.
According to Delta managing director Paul Keating, there is no better desk for the money: "I bought the Legend 3000 so that I have a Midas console to compete with other manufacturers in a certain price range, and as far as I'm concerned there's nothing to talk about. In terms of bang for buck and features for money, it's the best in its class. And it's still a Midas with that classic Midas sound. If your budget doesn't stretch to a Heritage, then Legend is the answer to your prayers!"

Logic System will exhibit at PLASA 2002 riding the crest of a wave having achieved the most successful six months yet. This years’ show sees an array of new product launches including the second generation of product for the IS Series and the addition of the IS10 enclosure. The evolution of the installation series has been achieved by working closely with customers and aims to build on the runaway success of the original boxes. The LS Series, aimed at theatre and A/V markets sees the addition of the LS8 to plug the gap between LS7 and LS12.
Recent jobs keeping the factory working to capacity include Yates venues in Leeds and Blackpool plus Jumpin’ Jaks, Blackburn for TTL and Toad in Chelmsford for Image Sound. Meanwhile, LMC identified the LS Series as the obvious solution for an installation at St Mary’s church in Paddington.
In the live arena, Glasgow-based hire company SAS added eight CM15 cabinets to its existing stock of CM20 units in order to service the BBC Saturday morning show, whilst Nottingham-based Merlin PA added four stacks of CS1296 to the hire inventory to cover a busy summer schedule which included Status Quo at Newmarket Racecourse. Last but not least, Edinburgh venue The Liquid Rooms has added to its existing Logic front-of-house system with 15 CM20 stage monitors. Local dealer Northern Light handled the deal.

A new mid/high pack has been launched by professional audio systems specialist Shermann Pro-Audio. The company, based in Newtown, Wales, is delighted with early orders for the Shermann RS-5. Designed for use mainly with the successful Shermann R118 VLF system or with any Shermann LF unit, the RS-5 is a bi-amped, four driver mid/high pack featuring a 12" horn-loaded low-mid device, twin 6.5" mid-range and a 1" HF drive unit.
Weight saving within the RS-5 has been achieved through the use of highly efficient, British-built 12" low-mid and 1" HF drivers equipped with neodynium magnet assemblies. The mid and high units are front-loaded, mounted on an easily removable housing, which doubles as a phase plug for the 12" drive unit. In such a design, the external cabinet is effectively a sealed chamber which eliminates the need for removable access panels or doors, thereby creating an extremely sturdy structure. The cabinet is fitted with rear-mounted 100mm castors, six handles, MAN 2.5" flying points, a heavy-duty steel grille with foam cover and twin NL8 connectors (NL4 to order).
A realistic balance of smooth response, effortless vocal reproduction and relatively high efficiency has been the major design priority for the compact RS-5. Both sections have a nominal impedance of 8ohm and require just 400W per section to realize the 132dB continuous output (138db peak).
"The RS-5 is proving very popular because it's easily rigged and lighter than most competitive boxes," explained Shermann Pro-Audio designer Ken Hughes. "It wil
Sennheiser continues to clock up endorsement agreements with major artists across the world. Among the latest signings are The White Stripes, who have been performing their signature brand of stripped-down guitar and drums rock to capacity crowds at gigs and festivals in the UK and across Europe with a clutch of Sennheiser evolution mics, including e865 condensers for both Jack and sister Meg’s vocals. Jack White (guitar and vocals) and Meg White (drums and vocals) cut an especially distinctive sound, which has propelled them rapidly to ‘major selling artist’ status.
evolution microphones were chosen before the start of the tour by front-of-house engineer Matthew Kettle, after success using them on previous projects. "Sennheiser has provided not just top quality equipment for this tour," he said of the UK and European dates, "but as on previous occasions, the back-up has been first rate."
With the line-up comprising just guitar and drum kit, with Jack and Meg sharing vocal duties, a range of microphones was needed to accurately convey the desired sounds. Meg’s drum kit was set up with the new e664 condenser for overheads, e604 clip-mics for snare and toms and an e602 kick drum microphone. Meanwhile Jack’s guitar cabs were mic’d up with evolution e609s - a classic Sennheiser design for the job and a mic which Kettle has used in the past and was confident would provide the response and sound he was looking for.
With vocal duties split between them, Jack and Meg were each going to require a microphone of similar qua
Ibiza’s popular nightspot, Bar M, is where many eager clubbers begin their night of revelry before going on to dance the night away at Privilege, the world’s biggest club, where the weekly Manumission can pull a crowd of up to 10,000. Naturally, Bar M wanted to give the happy clubbers as good a sound experience as they expected from Manumission, and to do this required an innovative approach by Britannia Row Productions’ sound system designer, Roly Oliver.
"KLP approached us in April, looking for a sound system which would be the talk of the island and with dedicated clubbers worldwide," said Oliver. KLP represent Orange, sponsor of both Bar M and Manumission. Oliver flew to Ibiza to see the challenges for himself. Bar M has two indoor bars but most of the action takes place outside. His first problem was that local bye-laws prohibited placing speakers outside. "Using 16 Turbosound TQ310s mounted direct to the edge of the ceiling and backed up by three SB828 subs overcame this," said Oliver. "However, the key to the whole system lay in the right mixing engine," said Oliver "and after talking to Yamaha’s Richard Metcalfe, I had no doubt that their DME32 digital mixing engine fulfilled all our needs."
Oliver needed to have a number of pre-sets for different days and different times of day as well as a unit that could be programmed directly without the need for a laptop. The DME32 met all these criteria. "Being able to alter and store new settings such as different EQs and levels for sounds such as House
Last Autumn, Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani opened his new worldwide headquarters at Via Bergognone 59 in Milan. Located in the up-and-coming Porta Genova district, the facilities are set to be the global stage for the Armani brand. Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who, like Armani, is famous for his appreciation of simplicity and purity in his design, was commissioned to transform the space into an ethereal fusion of concrete, water and light.
Central to the 12,000sq.m building is the 3,400sq.m Armani Teatro, which caters for a variety of events, including fashion shows. With simple reorganization, the black-box theatre, normally laid out for catwalk shows, can form a proscenium stage for drama, a thrust arrangement for dance, or be emptied out for use as an art gallery or a site-specific installation. It can also be used as a lecture hall, convention area, or even as a temporary cinema or nightclub.
The technical systems were designed by Change Performing Arts (CPA) with lighting designer AJ Weissbard, who was brought in as project designer, to enable the adaptation of the space and include tools for lighting control which can grow as technology develops without interfering with the architecture. The systems focus on three main areas: a flexible grid and hanging system allowing for different configurations, two unique dimmable fluorescent runways with colour-changing capabilities and, most importantly, an advanced lighting system with a sizable inventory of equipment.
Some 340 ETC Source Fours make up the majority of the conventional lighting rig, which is d
Royal Philips Electronics has launched the Plena All-in-One PA system with combined background music (BGM) and paging to meet the growing public address requirements of small to medium-sized businesses. With a 120W mixer amplifier, a professional quality CD player with MP3 capability for long play time and a digital FM/AM tuner all in one compact housing, it provides a 'one-box' solution for many applications - including public address in retail stores, supermarkets, car showrooms, garages, small factories, and schools.
Plena All-in-One is ideal for smaller PA applications requiring compact equipment to fit into limited space. It takes up less space and is more economical and easier to use than a separate amplifier and BGM music unit. The built-in amplifier is a 120W mixer-amplifier with three microphone inputs, including one with selectable priority status for use with a microphone with remote switching contacts. A two-tone chime option is provided to precede priority calls. This microphone input also features a voice-activated (VOX) option so that when someone is speaking into the microphone, it automatically mutes or reduces the volume of the background music to an adjustable softer level. The amplifier has controllable outputs for two separate loudspeaker zones and an additional call-only output, effectively giving it a third zone for priority announcements. Call-active contacts are provided to override local volume controls on loudspeakers (if fitted).
The CD player is a professional quality, drawer-loading unit which plays normal audio CDs and recordable discs (CD
d&b audiotechnik’s development and support teams are conducting live tests and presentations across Europe of their long-throw extension to the renowned d&b C4 system. This is the final development stage of the C3 line array module.
The 2-way active C3 loudspeaker is an entirely horn-loaded design which, unlike other ‘line arrays’, can be arrayed not only vertically but also horizontally, and by employing the distinctive 30° angled rear side panels and rigging accessories of the C4 cabinet, it extends even further the scalability of the C4 system. Utilizing an identical horizontal dispersion of 35° (above 900Hz) and with a 5° vertical HF dispersion per cabinet, the total frequency range of the vertical curved coherent wavefront of a C3 column is naturally dependant on the overall length of the column. This enables the C3 to address distances above 30m in two different ways: on the one hand as an integrated module for a C4 array where mid and high range to the far field is required, and on the other hand as a full line array approach optimized together with C4-Subs and B2-Subs. The C3 is also driven by the standard d&b P1200A mainframe to produce 143dB maximum SPL.
To date, a variety of diverse applications have been realized with the co-operation of existing European C4 users. For example, a concert at the Rotterdam Stadion with an audience of 50,000; typical open-air and arena shows with audiences of 15,000 such as the Beach Festival in Skive in Denmark, the Palais Omnisports Paris and the Sportpalast in Antwerp, pus a selection of shows ranging fr
The Klark Teknik Group has appointed Dublin-based Sound & Communications as the exclusive distributor for all Midas products in Ireland. Sound & Communications already has a long-standing partnership with Shuttlesound and Electro-Voice and is therefore well placed to take on Midas distribution. According to Midas international product manager David Cooper, Sound & Communications was the natural choice. "We felt that the time had come to get closer to our customers in Ireland, especially since the launch of higher volume products like Legend and Venice. We needed someone who could offer local support and local market awareness. Given the strength and nature of their customer base, plus their proven success with other related brands, we feel that Sound & Communications is the best partner for Midas in Ireland."
Sound & Communications Alan Murphy agrees. "We're delighted to have the Midas brand on board. It's the most prestigious brand of live consoles in the world and now they make a range of desks to suit every application and every budget. It's the perfect complement to the brands we already represent in this territory."

Concert sound specialists Tour Tech - already owners of Soundcraft Spirit 328 digital production desks - recently upgraded to the new-generation 328XD. Dick Rabel’s company purchased a pair of the feature-packed digital production consoles - and immediately had several of their artists lining up to use them - with the Levellers heading the list.
"This follows the success we had with the standard 328s, which were used with Stereo MCs and PJ Harvey - including her UK and US tour," commented Rabel. Top band Coldplay are another to take advantage of a new 328XD to mix down hard disk and samplers for live work, before transferring to the main console. So Solid Crew have similarly been using the 328XD. "Coldplay are currently using a 328XD and 8 way mic/line expander for live touring work," confirmed Dick. "They have been using these components since they commenced their current touring schedule, including their Glastonbury headline."
The latest generation of the 328 architecture, the 328XD digital mixing console incorporates dynamics processing on every channel, group and mix path, and has broadened the desk’s functionality - from straight sound mixing to production and control of sequencers and desktop synths.
