UK - Since Pearce Hire first committed to an intern development programme with local Further Education College Peterborough Regional College (PRC) over four years ago, the main Pearce Hire team has expanded with a number of permanent members of staff who honed their skills through the project.
The internship programme at Pearce Hire is headed up by Jim Brown, warehouse manager, and students are given the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience of working at the HQ of this busy rental production company.
Brown picks up the story: “This year there have been some new requirements set down for the students and their course work, and because we acknowledge the value the intern programme brings to Pearce Hire on a number of levels, then we were more than happy to adapt our structure to suit.”
As a result, throughout 2017, Pearce Hire has embarked on various initiatives to nurture young talent in the technical and event production industry. In the first instance, the company delivered a four-month rolling programme of one-week placements for over 20 first year students at PRC, who have each participated in 30-hours work experience. During these intense one-week placements the students gained a first-hand understanding of what happens behind the scenes of this extremely busy production and installation company; servicing and prepping kit, and working as fully integrated members of the team fulfilling warehouse and workshop duties.
“We have long lamented the limited availability of trained technicians coming into the industry so wi
Germany - The Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association (AVIXA) presented a session on the role of AV technology in higher education at OEB Global 2017 in Berlin.
The cross-sector conference focused on the latest developments in learning, with insights and best practices from leading organisations in the field. AVIXA took part in OEB Global for the first time and was a gold sponsor of the event.
Moderated by AVIXA CEO David Labuskes, the session The Power of Integrated Audiovisual Experiences in Higher Education demonstrated that AV experiences were important not only as a way of drawing the best students to their institutions, but also for improving their learning outcomes.
“Your next new class of students has grown up in a world that’s totally connected,” Labuskes said. “They live their social lives in the palm of their hands. They speak in images rather than words. They access content when and where they can. How will you convince them that you offer a unique environment to best realize their learning potential? Don’t simply answer ‘technology,’ because that’s already the old answer. Today’s connected students are looking for meaningful, impactful, integrated experiences. Audiovisual solutions enable that.”
Labuskes was followed by Dr Piet van der Zanden, education expert AV-IT in learning spaces at Delft University of Technology, who explained how the right combination of pedagogy, space and technology create exceptional AV experiences for students and staff. He encouraged the audience to foster interdepa
UK - The Association of Lighting Designers (ALD) announced the first full-year Lumière Scheme at this year’s Annual Lighting Lunch held in London on 18 December (Monday).
The scheme, which will run in continued partnership with Chichester Festival Theatre, underlines the ALD’s commitment to emerging talent, enabling them to work in mainstream theatre with established lighting designers, fostering important relationships with those whom they may work again as assistants or associates on future projects. They will receive first-hand experience of the collaborative nature of creative teams together with knowledge of how various departments work together, creating further opportunities in the industry as they develop their careers.
Having previously run two successful six-month pilot schemes, the intention is to build up to three Lumières per year.
ALD chair Johanna Town explains how this step will develop the role and status of the lighting designer, “Every year that we run the Lumière Scheme in three venues, it means that that there will be at least 36 shows happening in the UK with a paid assistant working on them. Surely the producing managements will start to take notice, so that lighting designers can have the support we need to make better art… and with investment in people.”
The Lumière Scheme is designed to transform the working life of a lighting designer through opportunities and connection. As a successful participant of the pilot scheme, Rachel Cleary states, “Having now come to the end of my period as a Lumière

USA - ASTC and USITT have announced the fifth collaborative project between university students and ASTC member theatre consultants. Projects will be presented at the USITT 2019 Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky on 20-23 March 2019.
By working together with a professional theatre consultant as a mentor, students will learn more about how venues are designed or renovated. Additionally, students will see performance spaces differently and therefore will be exposed to other available career paths within the entertainment industry. Teams may consist of undergraduate or graduate theatre students and should be under the supervision of a faculty advisor.
Working together, the teams will select a theoretical project of a building that is on, or accessible, from the team’s campus. They will survey and study the current conditions and develop a plan to transform the subject space to meet the team’s stated concept goals. Potential projects include: substantial improvements to an existing theatre; conversion of non-performance space into a new performance space; changing the form and function of an existing theatre.
The ASTC member judges will make their final selection for awards based on both the submitted design and the live presentation. One team will be presented the Edgar L. Lustig Honour Award, and a Director’s Award may be presented to a second team by the judges.
Save the dates below to make sure students and advisors plan this project for the 2018-19 academic year. Say the organisers, advisors should consider including this projec
