UK – The 2020 final of popular TV show Britain’s Got Talent wowed millions of viewers with a spectacular LED screen stage set and virtual audience, powered by Green Hippo’s Hippotizer Boreal+ and Karst+ Media Servers.
Three active Boreal+ and one Karst+ were used for the main system, with the same amount again running as backup for the live show. One Boreal+ fed the main stage LED display, driving 6K content to 3mm screens from supplier Anna Valley, with another Boreal+ dealing with camera overlay effects and live camera shots. The Karst+ fed Art-Net data from two lighting consoles to an array of SGM LED Tubes.
This was a very different finale, with no physical audience present in the studio due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In substitute, more than 1000 live feeds from viewers at home were fed to a new LED ‘audience wall’, positioned behind the judging panel. This was driven by the third Boreal+, with data fed in via NDI by broadcast graphics specialist, Happy Graphics.
The virtual audience was collated from PCs using real-time communications (RTC), and after being brought into the network via NDI was applied to a Hippotizer layer. Using VideoMapper, the team structured the feed to fit the different screens, using tint and colour match to unite them and make the virtual audience look harmonious with the video content and graphics, which were created by Ben Foley and Alex King at Buckloop Films.

Presented on the Holopops Ultra Holographic Projection System, the event was the debut outing for the innovative product but thanks to the occasion it secured a global launch that most manufacturers can only dream of.
Since then that single tweet has received over 35,000 quote tweets and over 18,000 retweets, with over 235,000 likes. Similar posts on Facebook and Instagram also went viral with over 14 million views of the hologram on Instagram alone.

UK - The Complete Laser Display (CLD) bundles, newly announced by Visual Displays last month, have received such positive market feedback that the company has decided to take the concept of all-in-one macro displays a step further. The result is the new ‘XL’ version of the bundles.
Explaining the rationale, company director Greg Jeffreys states: “When we originally announced the CLD concept, the intention was to go head to head with flat panel displays starting from 100in. But the feedback we received suggested that we could supersize this, starting from 130in, as an alternative to dvLED.” The resulting CLD-XL bundles are as easy to use and maintain as dvLED, he maintains, “and at a fraction of the cost.”

The Netherlands - LED display brand, Absen has signed a distribution partnership with Fairlight, a distributor of light, sound, and video equipment for professional users.
Headquartered in Bemmel, in the Netherlands, Fairlight will primarily be tasked with bringing Absen’s expanding range of LED products to customers across the Benelux region. The new partnership will allow prospective customers in the region to experience Absen LED at Fairlight’s Bemmel showroom, as well as taking part in product-specific training and making use of the company’s on-site maintenance and repair services.

UK - LED Creative’s Byte Controller has entered its fourth year of providing some of television’s largest shows with maximum control and small channel footprint.
The Byte Controller gives production companies and LD’s the ability to create a pixel map look without the cost of extra processing. This is done by the controller offering multiple FX layers and a background colour layer including adjustable speed, size and copies of the effects, this is all controlled from a maximum of 32 DMX channels driven from a lighting console.
Other control options are available to reduce the amount of DMX channels required while still giving the operator the utmost control.
New Features include: Virtual Canvas - allowing grouping over multiple controllers, meaning up to 140m of LED can be controlled as if it was one piece; Colour Wipe Effects, and New Channel Mode (32 channels) that allows 16 fixtures to a fit on a single DMX Universe.
Console Offset is increased to 16-bit allowing pixel by pixel control of linear effects even up to the maximum 140m of LED Grouped. FX speeds have been refined for even more control, while Setup Menus have been made more user friendly and faster to navigate. FX Stop allows the operator to stop or pause any effect at the desired point for any length of time.

UK - SLLFX, executive producer Pete Goulding and PSP AV recently deployed the rental company’s new Unilumin UPADIII HD LED screen for a live broadcast from telecommunications provider Gamma Communications. The broadcast was organised as an internal event for employees and featured a number of musicians, as well as a Zoom call style karaoke section starring staff members from the Gamma Communications team.
SLLFX, has seen its livestreaming services in popular demand since the UK’s lockdown began.
The Unilumin screen is a new addition to SLLFX’ extensive inventory of equipment and is designed specifically for live broadcast. The curvable screen can be installed and disassembled by one person, with a handy modular design and optional ground stacking system for maximum flexibility depending on the application. SLLFX also supplied a pair of Novastar VX4S processors to control the visuals.
“This was a highly anticipated event, with the added pressure of it being a live broadcast, so we knew that a high-end solution was required,” explains Adam Turbill, MD of SLLFX. “The Unilumin screen is a fantastic addition to our stock because it’s so versatile for both indoor and outdoor events and it always delivers. With hybrid events on the rise, the Kilowatt AV team are implementing the same passion and dedication they would for a large-scale show, and for the latest progressive event for Uber South Africa, a client for the past three years, supplied the design, manufacture and full technical.
Hosted for the second consecutive year, Uber’s Tech for Safety Summit, attended by 120 people and joined by 2 000 others via live stream, tackled Africa’s most pressing safety-related concerns now further complicated by the Covid-19 Pandemic.
With the participation of various leaders, innovators and talent across the spectrum, and journalist and former radio presenter Redi Tlhabi stepping in as the master of ceremonies, the event incorporated numerous speakers and panels both at the venue with others interacting via a live stream.
While social distancing measures were in place, Kilowatt AV utilised equipment to create an enticing atmosphere and the important visual element. The equipment included the use of an Absen 2.9mm D2V LED screen (Kilowatt AV own 400 panels). “The set-up for the LED was pretty straight forward with a 16:9 format (4.5m x 2.5m),” explains Neil Zaayman, chief operating officer at Kilowatt AV. “We've always been very happy with Absen, it’s a solid product.”

UK - It’s been a tough time for all performance venues and especially for community theatres like The Congress in Cwmbran which cancelled all its shows in March as COVID-19 took hold, mid-way through one of its busiest seasons.
However, through successive lockdowns, the venue has been reimagined as The Congress Virtual Studio, a fully equipped streaming facility encouraging local artists and businesses to record and broadcast music shows and engage in events, generating interest and at least some income during this period.
Cwmbran is also the home of Zero 88’s manufacturing facility. There are close ties between the popular lighting control brand and the 300-seat venue, which has Zero 88 Chilli dimmers installed, and furthermore, Zero 88’s international sales manager Tyler Holpin is actively involved as a volunteer on the technical side.
The Congress Theatre opened in 1972 and became a charity run venue in 1992 after being faced with closure. Martyn Redwood then assumed its management 16 years ago has seen many challenges over that time, but it’s always managed to keep going.
Jon Salman and Green Room Events based nearby in Abertillery are also regular technical suppliers to the theatre, and he, Tyler, Martyn, and a few others came up with the idea of transforming the space into a studio.

In June 2019, the team behind 7thSense acquired the Medialon brand and ShowControl activities from Barco to form Medialon Limited. Since then, the Medialon team and product line has expanded from offices in North America, Canada and the UK.
As part of the integration strategy, which became effective on 1 October 2020, all Medialon products have been added to the 7thSense product portfolio and Medialon product names remain the same.
All Medialon staff will now join the 7thSense team and continue to work on the development of the Medialon product line.

UK - Arts Council England has opened its £18m Developing your Creative Practice (DYCP) fund to a wider pool of creative practitioners in light of the COVID-19 effects on the workforce.
Able to apply for a grant this year will be DJs, performer/creators, arts and cultural educators, community practitioners/engagement specialists, movement directors, cultural conservators, creative enablers and creative technicians.
“We know that COVID-19 has had a significant impact for individuals, and many will need to develop themselves and their work to respond to the new environment,” says the Arts Council. “We want to support as many people as possible to reshape and redefine their work and continue to make a positive impact on creativity and culture.”
The grants, ranging from for £2,000 to £10,000, will be awarded for development activities from practitioners working across music, theatre, dance, visual arts, literature, libraries, combined arts, and museums practice. This includes professional development or researching or creating new work.
The money will be allocated in four rounds running until October 2021, with the first round now open to applicants. To be eligible, practitioners need to have one year’s experience, be based in England, have a UK bank account, and be aged 18 or over.
The first round closes at noon on 5 November, with decisions announced in the week commencing 21 December.

Nick Askew is stepping into the role of head of corporate events and will have overall responsibility for CT UK’s corporate projects.
Matt Eve is the new commercial director, focusing on the development and alignment of sales and marketing across CT.

The new curved LED Volume, recently installed at the Lab and running on Brompton Technology processing, is a testament to the company’s continuous commitment to empower new ways of content creation using the latest technology advances.
Whilst UE has been at the forefront of Virtual Production (VP) since the first workflows began to emerge, it is the first time that the company has introduced its state-of-the-art virtual studio, working with partners such as Brompton Technology, ARRI and creative technical production company 80six, ‘to bring the magic of virtual production to life’.
“Our initial conversations with Brompton took place at this year’s ISE, where we met with several other vendors to discuss our needs to create a virtual production studio at our Innovation Lab in London,” says Epic’s technical artist, Ben Kidd. “Brompton’s Tessera processing ticked all our boxes, so we were very keen to go ahead and test the full LED solution in situ.”

The new venture combines a physical event production offering with services such as live streaming, extended reality (xR) and social media amplification to enable organisers and agencies to expand the reach of their event.
“We wanted to create a company which was fluent in virtual event technologies while not forgetting the importance of more classic elements of event production,” comments Davies. “High quality design, lighting, sound, staging etc. remain at the heart of live events but in the COVID-19 era we have to be willing to integrate virtual elements too.”

USA - Fuse Technical Group turned to 13 disguise gx 2c media servers with Designer software and Sockpuppet control features to help deliver a home game feel for teams and fans at home, as the NBA resumed its season.
The NBA has set up a ‘bubble’ isolation zone at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Florida to enable professional basketball to resume in the US, while keeping players safe. Although spectators were not permitted in the stands at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex where the games were held, fans have been able to watch televised basketball once again.
“This was a totally new experience for the NBA as well as the teams involved,” says Charles Dabezies for Fuse Technical Group. “Our largest challenge was understanding how to adapt 22 different team’s shows for this new environment. Adapting a traditional basketball game to this layout was new for everyone.”
From July to October, the bubble has been host to the final games of the 2019–20 NBA regular season and the 2020 playoffs. Four production teams ran 33 scrimmage games and 88 regular season games across three courts, amounting to over 9,000 minutes of basketball broadcast to millions of viewers worldwide - making this one of the longest running live TV productions powered by disguise.
“We have a long history of deploying disguise on large-scale projects, so we knew we were picking the right tools for the job,” Charles notes.

UK - Epic, the company behind Unreal Engine, has finalised the refurbishing of its London-based Innovation Lab, including a complete virtual production LED stage featuring ROE Visual LED products.
Epic Games, known for its video games, develops the Unreal Engine realtime 3D creation tool. This game engine not only powers their internally developed video games such as Fortnite and Infinity Blade series but is used to develop the virtual backgrounds and sets that made virtual production in film possible.
Since the technique of LED virtual production was explored and the first pioneering steps were taken, both Unreal engine and ROE Visual have been involved.
“ROE had already proven itself at the very cutting-edge and high end of LED virtual production with its pioneering use on Star Wars Mandalorian. It was important for us at Epic to give customers and our own teams a chance to get hands-on with this world-class tech in the heart of London. More importantly though is the amazing working relationship we have with ROE Visual, so together we can experiment, discover and shift the boundaries ever further”, states Ben Kidd, technical artist and project lead for the LED stage.
“With the new London studio we now have the availability to try and test new features on a screen the size which is normally used for mid-sized to smaller virtual production stages and studios as well.”

China - A watch tower that overlooks China’s second-longest river - the Yellow River - is lit by Christie laser projectors for a light show aimed at promoting Yellow River culture and boosting the local cultural tourism industry.
Located in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, the 90m high Yellow River Tower is the centrepiece of a night-time extravaganza titled The Great Lanzhou, which made its official debut on 29 September ahead of China’s 71st National Day celebrations. The outdoor show features 3D projection mapping, stage lighting, lasers, atmospheric effects and live performances to tell the story of the Yellow River basin - birthplace of ancient Chinese civilisation, and the most prosperous region in early Chinese history.
Projection is accomplished by Christie’s newly-appointed distributor Zhongqing Yingye Group using 32 Christie 1DLP and 3DLP laser projectors comprising DWU2022-HS and Crimson WU31 models featuring Christie BoldColor Technology, which offers enhanced colour performance and saturation. They are strategically installed to deliver bright and colourful visuals on the Yellow River Tower’s eastern face, as well as the grand stairway and podium in front of it.

USA - Foo Fighters recently played the #SOSFest livestream with Brit Row providing the virtual remote mixing solution. Performing at West Hollywood’s Troubadour, the gig was streamed to fans on 18 October as part of a collective action weekend in support of independent US-based music venues.
A total of 35 artists - including Miley Cyrus, The Roots, Major Lazer and Leon Bridges - played in multiple venues in cities across the US and joined the Foo Fighters in raising awareness and funds to keep North America’s cherished independent concert venues from closing indefinitely.
Named #SOSFest, the three-day virtual music festival was created to support the Save Our Stages initiative and America’s National Independent Venues Association’s (NIVA) Emergency Relief Fund. NIVA’s YouTube hosted the festival, with individual sets also aired on artist channels.
Prior to the gig, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl told Forbes why raising awareness is vital: “The smaller music venues are the ones that are really struggling and are not only culturally important, they are emotionally important.”
