UK - Scandinavian flat-pack super chain IKEA’s flagship store in Wembley, North London, is immersing potential buyers into an interactive, projection mapped environment this summer, thanks to an inspired project by Motion Mapping using Hippotizer Karst+ Media Servers.
The popular furniture and houseware brand’s team approached Ipswich-based Motion Mapping, which specialises in video mapping, to realise the project. The initial brief focused on a furniture section of the IKEA store, constructed from an L-shaped wall with large desk, hung cabinets and a series of 12 differing-sized empty photo frames, each one video mapped to synchronise with the back wall projections across all of the cabinets, hung in a portrait and landscape formation to create a wide display canvas. The team wanted to turn this into the immersive environment, using projections and interactive elements.
“The IKEA team found us through our website, and we immediately responded to their needs as this project is right up our street,” says Stuart Harris, creative director at Motion Mapping. “After hearing what they wanted to achieve, we knew that by using the features of Hippotizer and our experience with the platform, we could actually elevate the project to another level.”
Harris and his team collaborated with the IKEA creatives to develop the project into a richer experience, harnessing the power of Hippotizer. Now installed, a raft of colourful content slides seamlessly across the cabinets, walls and TVs. The closed cabinet doors are video mapped to show virtual stocked

Germany - As one of Europe’s leading wholesalers of visual presentation technology, Lang is renowned for its passion for innovation and willingness to invest in long-term partnerships that ensure an ample supply of state-of-the-art technology of the highest calibre. The company has invested in Brompton Technology Tessera LED video processors which complement Lang’s stock of Venus and Jupiter LED panels for high-quality and high resolution applications.
“Our goal with Venus and Jupiter has always been to set a benchmark in the LED market,” explains Manuel Müller, director rental at Lang. “With this in mind, two of the things next to resolution that were most important to us were usability and brightness, with Brompton’s leading Tessera LED processors serving a perfect match for those key requirements.”
Thanks to Brompton’s Dynamic Calibration technology, the Lang team, together with Absen, were able to increase the brightness of Venus to a level much higher than on conventional LED screens. “And we are able to further surpass the brightness for those applications that require exceptionally realistic-looking visual content and extra-wide colour gamut by utilising Brompton HDR,” adds Müller.
“For almost 45 years, Lang has been at the forefront of offering its know-how on visual presentation technology, earning a reputation of being the leading service provider for professional video applications in the European market,” says Peter Mathia, CEO at Lang. “Whether it’s for the big stage or small-scale events, we can offer the
UK - First announced in 2019 and opening its doors fully later this year, Sky Studios Elstree is a joint project between Sky and NBCUniversal. The 27.5-acre, complex located just north of London houses 13 sound stages, with media operations provider Xytech Systems offering total operational and financial control by streamlining the new film and TV studio’s internal processes across quoting, resource scheduling, cost management and reporting.
“Not long after Sky Studios Elstree was given the go-ahead in 2019, we started searching for a media operations solution that would meet the strict demands of our cutting-edge studios catering for high-end TV shows and films,” said Tom Avison, director of operations at Sky Studios Elstree. “Sky already had an excellent, long-standing relationship with Xytech Systems through its Transmission solutions installed at the Sky facilities in Italy, Germany and the UK. We also knew Xytech was already servicing other major studios across the UK, so we naturally approached them to see what they could offer us.”
Avison notes how from the early discussions and right through to the implementation and go-live phase, they found both the solution and the expertise offered by the Xytech team to be “highly flexible and responsive to the requirements of our operation and our ambition to use the system from quote to invoice and at every point in between.”
Xytech’s Media Operations Platform now manages the studio’s scheduling requirements, including studios, ancillary room and equipment bookings.

UK - Absen’s versatile Polaris series of rental LED displays supplied visual flair for the recent NWG Innovation Festival, which returned to Newcastle Racecourse (UK) after a two-year hiatus.
Organised by Northumbrian Water Group (NWG), the 2022 NWG Innovation Festival featured live music, comedy, tech demos and wellbeing events, as well as design sprints, hacks, workshops and activities aimed at solving difficult problems around topics such as climate change, cyber-security and water scarcity. The theme for this year’s festival, which took place from 12 to 15 July, was ‘Untapped Potential’ and focused on bringing together untapped talent from different sectors, backgrounds and locations.
For NWG Innovation Festival 2022, Sam Gordon, director of Big Purple Group (Big Purple Productions/Big Purple Events), specified the Polaris LED panels in two configurations: two PL4.8 displays were used on either side of the (indoor) main stage, while one PL3.9 was deployed outside and displayed rolling social-media coverage of the event.
Like the rest of the Polaris range, the PL4.8 and PL3.9, which were configured as 4 × 2m screens, offer high contrast, brightness and colour uniformity, supported by technologies such as HDR10 and UltraBlack, while the PL series’ integrated curve connection block system allows for high levels of alignment accuracy in both flat and curved (from -7.5° convex to +10° convex) configurations. With a panel weight of just 14kg – 10% lighter than conventional rental displays – and an automatic vertical locking system, Po

UK - CPL co-ordinated and delivered staging, sound, video, lighting and other associated BTS (behind the scenes) infrastructure to Tropic Fest, a two-day festival style event staged in the grounds of the historic Chillington Hall in Staffordshire.
CPL was working for production company Pandora Events and their end client, Tropic Skincare with a team led by Lee Gruszeckyj. They asked Star Events onboard to supply the 15m orbit stage on which all the performance action took place.
The sound, lighting and video production design was based on the requirements of several artist riders from a lively line-up that included acts like Rob da Bank, Our Girl G, Queenz, Mr Motivator, Air Guitar Band, Magic of Marley, Twinnie, the Strictly Come Dancing Band with headliners Gok Wan, Bjorn Again and the Ministry of Sound Disco. This mixed line up meant that flexibility was essential for all technical departments.
CPL’s experience of servicing festival events like Glastonbury, Hay on Wye, Camper Calling and many others was a massive asset in staging Tropic Fest, a small festival environment for approximately 1200 of Tropic’s ‘top ambassadors’.
A 5.4m wide by 3m-deep LED screen was hung at the back of the stage which features cantilevered PA supports for a neat, streamlined finish and clear sightlines.
The LED screen and a variety of lighting was rigged on four trusses sub-hung underneath the roof. Lighting comprised 40 moving lights - Claypaky Mythos2s for specials and effects, Martin MAC Auras for washes and Ayrton Perseos for beams and additio
UK - Last week, Alexander Stadium was brought to life for the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Engaged by Birmingham Ceremonies (a Joint venture between Gary Beestone Associates and Done and Dusted), Creative Technology provided LED display technology and playback services for the show, working closely with Total Fabrications for the structural elements and BAFTA award winning artist and creative director Tal Rosner for the content.
Centre stage on the stadium floor the ‘Bullring’ was made from a specialist outdoor and waterproof LED, created measuring over 260m in circumference, incorporating ramps for vehicle access in several locations and a seamless removeable section allowing larger scenic access including the massive mechanical bull.
At one end of the stadium a massive telescopic LED tower incorporating 250m2 of CT’s flagship BQ4 LED reaching 12m high when fully extended was another spectacular centrepiece of the overall production.
In addition to these custom elements built specifically for the show, CT also supplied the four main LED screens within the stadium which will remain in place throughout the Games. These were upgraded both in size and resolution following a recent test event now measuring 125m2 each and utilising the same BQ4 product as the tower screen.
Delivering content to all these displays CT deployed their custom G1 server platform running Pixera software. The G1 hardware is configurable to run multiple software options increasing flexibility, utilisation and consequently maki
Australia - Irish playwright, poet and author Oscar Wilde and his only novel The Picture of Dorian Gray tells a provocative and dreamlike story of a young man living in a Victorian-era England who relinquishes his soul for eternal youth and beauty.
Under the direction of Kip Williams, artistic director of Sydney Theatre Company (STC), actor Eryn Jean ‘EJ’ Norvill plays 26 separate roles capturing the audience’s attention throughout a two-hour performance.
To bring each role to life, TDC – Technical Direction Company worked with the team at Sydney Theatre Company to develop an on-stage technical solution for five moving LED screens and media server technology.
“The Picture of Dorian Gray uniquely uses live camera, pre-recorded and display technology as part of the stage design. The amazing stagecraft was developed by Sydney Theatre Company over a period of ten years,” said Ben Lightowlers, sound and video manager at Sydney Theatre Company.
Ranging in size from 1.5 metres square to 5 x 3m the high-resolution and bright LED screens fly in and off stage using a track system. The screens fly low to the stage, behind and in front of the performer to cleverly reveal the next character. The screens perform an aerial dance on stage, showing recorded and live footage from up to six cameras at various angles that also circle around Norvill on stage.
“Our relationship with TDC is an essential one. Three out of 12 shows we do will have some kind of video element and we rely on an essential relationship with TDC. We may

USA - Michigan’s much-anticipated Electric Forest Festival returned for 2022 with an expertly curated line up of EDM stars, jam bands, dubstep heroes and multiple other genres.
On the Sherwood Court stage, a massive 7056x2864 canvas of LED screens made up of 180m2 of Roe MC7 and 150m2 of YesTech MG7 featured visuals created by Observatory and powered by Hippotizer Tierra+ MK2 Media Servers.
Notable on the Sherwood Court stage were US ‘heaven trap’ DJ duo Slander, bass-heavy Mersiv, and ‘chillwave’ pioneer Toto y Moi. Observatory’s brief was to create the scenic visual content for the Sherwood Court stage’s proscenium arch LED screens, and the upstage LED screen when there wasn’t a guest VJ or content supplied with the performer. The team was commissioned by Electric Forest organisers Insomniac events and Leisure Expert Group, on the back of a successful visuals collaboration on the Beyond Wonderland festival in Southern California earlier this year.
“Creative briefs from Leisure Expert Group are second to none as their attention to detail and overarching themes are crystal clear,” says Observatory’s director of production, Simon Harris. “Their initial brief was to focus on the Sherwood Elephant stained glass styling, which was the main content used throughout the day. In the evening and into the night we introduced more diverse themes including an art nouveau greenhouse structure, lush trees, growing flowers, animated branches and vegetation, natural kaleidoscopes, growing roots, waterfalls and graphic patterns.”

UK - Immersive experience company Pixel Artworks has designed and created the immersive mindfulness experience Room to Breathe. Located in Outernet London, a new ‘immersive culture, media and music district’ at Tottenham Court Road, the sensory experience is based on the science of ‘box-breathing’. It aims to help anxious commuters and busy Londoners unwind and catch their breath throughout the day.
This experience has been masterminded by Pixel Artworks, harnessing the healing power of digital light and pixel technology, with original music written by Matthew Wilcock and guidance from trauma and anxiety consultant Jayne Cox.
Jayne comments: “Anxiety and stress often changes the way we breathe, with our breath often becoming rapid and shallow, resulting in heightened anxiety and becoming ‘stuck’ in a state of fight or flight. Learning and regularly implementing a simple breathing technique reduces anxiety by helping us to have more control over our breath. Once learnt, these techniques become a ‘tool’ that support us anywhere, whether we are on the move or at home.”
Matthew Wilcock adds: “The Room to Breathe music was written as a response to the 4x4 breathing technique giving people a rhythm to breathe to and an emotion to help settle and meditate.”
Jackson Tayler, technical director, Pixel Artworks comments on the technology: “The entire experience was crafted using Epic’s Unreal Engine, giving us control over real-time volumetric cloud and advanced lighting tools. Our rendering pipeline used an in-engine 360 c
