UK - UK - The only British surviving Second World War-era submarine, HMS Alliance, stands proudly in Gosport, just across the water from Portsmouth.

It has undergone a major £7m restoration project to bring it to life as a visitor attraction, allowing people young and old to go on board and experience what it would have been like on the vessel throughout historic wars.

The audio system was devised by sound designer Sarah Angliss, who also programmed the submarine's novel, generative audio system using MaxMSP. DJW was briefed to install the AV hardware and design, programme and install elements of the audio soundscaping throughout the 218ft submarine. The solution needed to help bring the submarine 'back to life', submersing visitors in the feel of a working vessel.

Belgium - Paul Van Hees, former director and founder of Apex Audio NV, has joined forces with Hendrik-Jan Gielis, an electronics engineer who was formerly in charge hardware at Apex, to create GiVa Audiovisual Technologies BVBA. The new company has purchased all the assets and IP rights of the Apex brand as well as the production facilities and all the stock, and has already started shipping.

"We created GiVa with the sole intention of continuing the Apex brand," declared Van Hees. "Whilst the collapse of Apex as a distribution/integration company was a devastating time for us all, it was no reflection on the Apex product line itself, and I really wanted to find a way to save the brand."

UK - Serious Stages created a visually striking structure that was the focal point at Singapore Day, when 9,000 Singaporeans came together to celebrate at London's Victoria Park.

Serious Stages designed and installed a 29.8m wide temporary structure to make sure the audience enjoyed great views of the artists and speakers from all areas of the park. Working with the organisers, Serious designed and engineered the system, which allowed them to create a large structure to give the production 'a bigger bang for its buck'. This was branded uniquely to characterise the look of the event, while delivering a cost effective alternative to hiring a stage of comparable size.

UK - Projection and video artist Ross Ashton collected his second Guinness World Record, this one for the 'Largest Card Illusion Reveal' which took place at the 2014 e-Luminate Festival in Cambridge, UK and was a collaboration with Italian illusionist Alexis Arts.

The five minute choreographed performance in front of a live audience featured projected video effects and animations throughout, beamed onto the side of the chapel at Sidney Sussex College. It culminated in two audience members picking cards which were then revealed on the wall as giant projections measuring 128.25 square metres!

This was declared as 'Officially Amazing' by the adjudicators from Guinness World Records.

UK - XL Video supplied projection and Catalyst control for the recent UK tour by quirky and interesting indie rock band Bombay Bicycle Club, which kicked off their So Long See You Tomorrowalbum campaign and world tour.

The equipment was specified by lighting and set designer, Squib, who is enjoying his second album tour with the band, which is also the first time they have embraced video visuals in their live work.

The band were heavily involved in the overall visual concept explains Squib. They wanted to bring the clean and unadulterated aesthetics of the album artwork created by London based design studio La Boca to the stage and into a completely different dimension, so Squib asked video designer Adam Young to assist in this process, joining animator Anna Ginsburg who was another integral part of the team.

UK - BSc (Hons) Lighting and Live Event Technology students from the University of South Wales have showcased their best work at the successful Innovation Expo 2014 event, held at the Wales Millennium Centre. The two-day event, held on Tuesday and Wednesday 1-2 April, saw 27 students present nine different products to industry employers.

Each group were tasked with developing and building a product prototype and creating their business model before marketing their product to potential buyers. This was a six-month process in their final year of study where students took their existing skills and interests and then sought out new knowledge and techniques to enable them to realise their products.

The White Light Award for Best Lighting was won jointly by two lighting design teams - Paul Pyant and Jon Driscoll for Charlie & the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, and Tim Lutkin and Finn Ross for Chimerica at the Almeida Theatre and the Harold Pinter Theatre.

The Best Sound Design Award also saw two winners - Carolyn Downing for Chimerica and Gareth Owen (on his third Olivier nomination) for Merrily We Roll Along at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

Spain / UK - XL Video has recently supplied LED and plasma screens and control for two separate events for Taiwanese global technology brand HTC - the first was for their exhibition stand at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, followed shortly after by the high profile London launch of the One M8 flagship smartphone at Olympia.

HTC at the 2014 Mobile World Congress, Barcelona took place at the Gran Fira expo centre, with XL working for global brand experience agency SSG Create. XL's Project Manager was Rich Pow.

HTC were revealing their 2014 mid-range portfolio, making their presence felt with one of the larger booth spaces of the show.

XL supplied and ground-supported a prominent 6 metre wide by 3.4 metre high 16:9 aspect ratio 6mm high definition LED screen which was incorporated into the building structure.

At an event in New York on Monday evening, Rene De Keyzer, XL's founder/president was introduced as the new head of XL Video Inc. De Keyzer, who started the company around the 1996 Atlanta Games, has already taken the reins in the Atlanta office, and is relocating there with his family.

UK - The live dance action at the heart of the newly released British movie Cuban Fury directed by James Griffiths and starring Nick Frost was given additional visual dynamics by S+H Technical Support's Video Floor product.

Thirty-six panels of the Video Floor were delivered and installed as a dancefloor surface at north London venue Koko by S+H for production company Awesome Effects. All the riveting salsa sequences were filmed there over the course of a week.

The floor brought colour, animation and plenty of WOW factors to the party, and is clearly visible in the scenes as the film reaches a crescendo.

Says S+H's Terry Murtha, "It's fantastic that our product was chosen for its part in the film ... it's great to have a bit of glamour in the house! The floor did a great job in adding excitement and bringing a whole new layer of depth to the filming."
