UK - Just a week before the second anniversary of his arrival at Total Solutions Group (TSG) and Mervyn Thomas is appointed MD of Total Fabrications Ltd (TFL). "If more evidence were needed of the impact this man has had, this is it," said Group chairman Chris Cronin. "He's a great team leader, a superb operations manager; I have every confidence in him."
Thomas was equally enthused, commentin: "This will relieve Chris of the day-to-day running of TFL," he said, "leaving him free to concentrate on what he does best; steering TSG strategically, and addressing the increasingly complex engineering demands placed upon us. So much of our work is now project led, and that's where Chris excels; with enough metal you can engineer your way out of any problem, but Chris creates elegant solutions that are lightweight and efficient."
TFL is the core manufacturing function of the Total Solutions Group, producing the company's extensive range of trussing and other aluminium based products - as well as fabricating all the structural and engineering requirements of their burgeoning stage set operation. "I've already implemented a number of work flow efficiency changes," commented Thomas. "Reducing materials handling has proved popular and frees up my team to focus on production."
"His talents are obvious," concluded Cronin, "it was one of the best days of this company's history when Mervyn came to join us."

UK - Stage Electrics is supplying lighting to The Sound of Music, working alongside production electrician Fraser Hall and production manager Matt Towell. The show premiered at the London Palladium on Wednesday 15 November 2006 with Stage Electrics also supplying the lighting to the star studded after show party.
The Sound of Music opened to critical acclaim with Connie Fisher the winner of the hit TV show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? taking the lead role. The show produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Ian, The Really Useful Group and Live Nation is already a huge success. In January 2007 Fisher pledged her allegiance to the show till February 2008.
Stage Electrics have supplied a total of 17 tonnes of equipment that was delivered to the Palladium in just three weeks from point of order. The show has 108 moving lights consisting mainly of Martin MAC 700 profile and wash fixtures and the brand new Martin MAC TW1 tungsten wash. The Martin fixtures are complimented by 19 Vari*Lite VL1000AS spots.
Lighting designer for the production, Mark Henderson says: "The MAC TW1s turned out to be a great unit - wonderful to have the colour mixing and variable beam size. It gave us good scope for a good Tungsten based wash enabling very good pastel colour range which works well on skin tones. On the TW1s I particularly liked the colour mixing together with the facility to be able to change the beam size. That's not really been an option on a colour mixing tungsten unit previously."
"The 700s were great for all the gobo and movem

USA - A pair of grandMA consoles is controlling lighting and video for the national tour of High School Musical: The Concert which is now touring major US cities. Loosely based on the Emmy Award-winning Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical, the show includes songs from the teenage-targeted feature and showcases solo material from the powerhouse young performers.
"High School Musical onstage is more like a rock concert than a Broadway show," notes lighting programmer Patrick Dierson. "There's a lot of choreography, set piece moves, pyro, CO2 jets and big video projection screens."
With so much happening, Dierson hails the grandMA's multi-user programming capability, saying: "It's great. Touring lighting director Calvin 'Mac' Mossier can run the show and call spots as he would normally, and I can take notes from Patrick Woodroffe and make changes in realtime all the while not affecting Mac," he explains. "The grandMA is the only console I've ever worked with that can do that in realtime with complete reliability. The grandMA is also the first and only system - and I've worked with just about all of them - that's able to keep up with the speed at which I hit buttons and make changes."
On the lighting side, 28 Martin MAC 2000 Profiles and 39 2000 Washes and 10 MAC 700 Profiles and 24 700 Washes as well as various conventional fixtures are run from the two grandMA consoles and three NSP units. The lighting rig primarily revolves around a centre circular truss and a downstage 180-degree truss
USA - Picture the band in a box, interior-decorated with 12 High End Systems DL.2 projections all around. That's the set design for The Tragically Hip, touring North America to promote their new CD World Container.
LD Brent Clark, says: "The DL.2 looks pretty cool and I was really surprised by the brightness and the edge blending. They are way brighter than I thought and creating the Collage (using Collage Generator software feature) on 12 of them a day is actually pretty easy. Also to be able to move the image around from the band to the house to the rear screens is so cool. DL.2 is an amazing light!"
Concerning the overall set design, Clark says: "The idea was to make a box (relating to the CD title World Container) and then project images from around the world. We contracted a company from Vancouver called The Collective to film all the content, which is totally reality-based."
Mainlight Industries supplied the DL.2s to the tour's main lighting contractor, Christie Lites. Christie techs include Jason Lewis, Denis Lee and Scott McLaughlin.
"Both Christie and Mainlight were fantastic in their support of this project," says Clark. "Both companies helped me out in so many ways and went the extra mile for me. It was an absolute pleasure to deal with them.
"Regarding the DL.2s, all I have to say is 'Awesome'. I am so impressed by this light!" says Clark.
The tour started in late January in Canada and runs through the U.S. until April 29.

UK - CP Sound has completed the installation of two JBL sound systems with Adastra 100V line amplification at Beirut Express venues in West London - Old Brompton Road in South Kensington and at the prime location of Kensington Church Street.
Beirut Express, part of the Maroush Group, is one of the liveliest and fastest growing new restaurant chains in London. Old Brompton Road is the second complete Beirut Express venue to be kitted out from scratch by CP Sound, following on from the success of the busy Kensington Church Street outlet.
The client wants to create an animated, lively atmosphere in the restaurants - so good sound is an essential ingredient. Some venues also feature live music, belly dancing and other entertainment.
The Brompton Road location is a long narrow design with stunning marble walls and stainless steel finishes - so a real acoustic challenge for CP Sound. Colin Pattenden designed a system to overcome these physical disadvantages by very precise speaker positioning - ensuring even coverage throughout the venue. The other consideration was that whilst background music needed to add to the general hubbub, it couldn't to be so loud that holding a conversation became difficult.
The budget was also expedient, so he used six JBL Control 26 CT ceiling speakers - one of the range's flagship small installation products. With a coaxially mounted 6.5" woofer and 3/4" titanium-coated tweeter, Pattenden says: "It's just the perfect speaker for the job of delivering good but not overly loud sound levels across a wide coverage area."
USA - Elation Professional has announced the schedule for its 2007 Elation Training and Products Roadshow.
A series of travelling seminars designed to educate dealers on the use and application of Elation lighting products, this year's Roadshow will stop in major U.S. markets from coast to coast and will even travel north and south of the border to Canada and Mexico City. Presented by factory-trained specialists, the one- or two-day seminars are offered free-of-charge to Elation dealers.
"The market for professional stage, club and architectural lighting products is booming, while at the same time these products are becoming increasingly more technically sophisticated," said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. "There are great opportunities for retailers to grow their lighting business, but to do so they must possess the knowledge required to sell today's cutting-edge products. Through our Roadshows, we aim to educate dealers about the latest products and inform them about emerging markets for lighting, so they can maximise their sales."
Among the topics covered in the seminars are: automated lighting, LED technology, lighting controllers and software, professional fog machines, data distribution, and wireless DMX solutions. Dealers will get a chance to have hands-on experience with the latest Elation products, including CompuLive and SD3D software. Additionally, there will be a sales training course covering features, benefits, applications and troubleshooting Elation products.

USA - GoboMan has introduced the GP100 GoboMan Projector Light. The new GP100 is designed to be a brighter version of the popular GP75 GoboMan Projector Light. This 100-watt Gobo Projector has all the same features of the GP75 but is 30% brighter. Rebel Hoffman, co-owner of GoboMan says, "Everything is the same in the GP100 as far as operation and simplicity of design; we just increased the light output with the 100-watt lamp. The ease of operation is a key feature of our Projector Light and we didn't want to sacrifice any of that by changing around too many things in this next step."
GoboMan's Steve Hoffman agrees, "We've had such a great reaction to the original GP75 Gobo Projector, but from customer feedback, we knew that people would want a brighter unit so we started working to introduce this 100-watt version quickly. Our goal at GoboMan is to listen to our customer feedback and respond to it in as timely a fashion as possible. We launched the GP100 Gobo Projector at the recent WFX Show in Dallas this past November to wonderful response and are pleased to announce that it is now widely available."
Like the previous model, the GP100 includes everything for immediate projection, even the gobos. Five steel gobos and four colour filters come as standard along with a 12V, 100W halogen lamp. One additional option now offered with the GP100 is colour choice of either black or white. "We received a lot of requests for a Gobo Projector Light in white, which we are happy to have now added as an option in the GP100 line," says Hoffman.

Hong Kong - The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), one of the largest horse racing organisations in the world, has recently undergone an overhaul of the audio system in its plush executive suites. The extensive new system comprises seven Allen & Heath iDR-8 digital processing mixers, an iDR-switch, iDR-Out, and from the accompanying range of PL remote control units, six PL-10 rotary fader panels, four PL-9 connection hubs, and forty PL-4 wall plates.
Designed and installed by Eastern Acoustic Development (EAD), the new system has been installed to manage three executive floors at the Happy Valley racecourse, which house the offices of the chairman, vice-chairman, and board members, as well as various meeting rooms. Each floor has two iDR-8 digital mixers with PL-10 LED display rotary fader panels to manage the audio distribution to different zones. The system is accompanied by Lab.gruppen C16:4 amplification, which includes an Ethernet interface to the NomadLink network.
A total of forty PL-4 remote control wall plates have been installed in all the steward boxes and executive rooms for commentary selection from one of four different languages sourced from a language transmission programme, and for easy access to the output level control. The PL-9 units provide up to seven connections to chains of PL devices, simplifying wiring, and eliminating the need for complex daisy-chaining.
"This is the most ambitious and technically extensive system we have designed and installed in Hong Kong," comments EAD's technical director, W H Chan. "Allen & Heath's iDR
Sweden - Dalhalla, a natural amphitheatre by picturesque Lake Siljan, hosts an annual summer programme of opera, classical, jazz, and rock concerts. The open-air design makes it impractical to maintain permanent audio and lighting installations. As a result, Dalhalla requires an AV installation each May. That task is the responsibility of Park Brothers (Bröderna Park AB), a full-service production company with headquarters in Insjön. Managing director Bengt Park notes that the annual installation consists entirely of sound and lights. "We don't use much video," he says. "Because the environment is so bright, video is not often used." What is often used is the venue's system of Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers.
Diana Krall's FOH engineer, Dave Lawler, was impressed with what he found at the facility when the jazz pianist and vocalist played at Dalhalla this past summer. "You're going to a very remote area and don't know what to expect, so to find a Meyer Sound system there was amazing. It's high technology in the wilderness; quite a contrast."
The primary house system at Dalhalla is self-powered, consisting of two Meyer Sound M2D compact curvilinear arrays of 12 cabinets each. "We knew that Meyer Sound was a reliable system," says Park, "and its being self-powered helps make it very efficient to run and convenient to set up." The arrays are driven from a Meyer Sound LD-3 compensating line driver, which provides EQ to compensate for air absorption of high frequencies on longer throws, ensuring consistent soun
UK - Lakeside Arts Centre in Nottingham has become one of the first venues in Europe to take delivery of ETC's newest lighting control console, Congo jr, via dealer Stage Electrics. Lakeside is the University of Nottingham's public arts centre and presents an eclectic programme of music, dance, theatre, visual art and family events.
"It became clear that our old desk was not up to the demands we were making of it," explains technical manager Gareth Chell. "We test drove a few consoles and decided that the Congo jr was by far the best of all of them. It's made a real difference to the quality of lighting at the theatre, and we're really proud that we got one of the first desks in Europe.
"We chose the Congo jr as it has all the features and more that we were looking for and has the flexibility to meet with the demanding needs of a very diverse building. We also like the fact that ETC is dedicated to the development of the console and updating the software on a regular basis."
Chell was speaking during a break in a training session being run at Lakeside by ETC's associate regional manager Jeremy Roberts for technicalstaff and freelancers from the theatre. They were joined by staff of BBC Scotland, who are about to take delivery of nine Congos.

USA - Lighting Designer Carlos Colina turned to a Martin lighting rig that included BigLite 4.5 and SuperBig 7K fixtures for Univision Network's Nuestra Navidad presented by Target. Aired on December 8, 2006 on Univision, America's leading Spanish-language network, and produced by Emilio Estefan and Univision, the show featured an array of the most popular holiday classics and current chart toppers performed by an all-star line-up of Latin performers including Mexican superstar recording artists Pepe Aguilar and Joan Sebastian.
"The concept behind the lighting design was to help expand the set beyond its borders," comments Carlos Colina. "The audience and starfield was the only set, so I created a symmetrical look with two circular trusses with ten spokes coming out extending towards the starfield. I finished it off with 20" box trussing connecting between the spokes to close off the look of the set."
Taped from a dazzling snow-filled set at Greenwich Studios in North Miami, Florida, the rig consisted of Martin MAC 2000 Washes, MAC 2000 Profiles, MAC 2000 Performances, MAC 250 Entours, Atomic 3000 strobes with Atomic Colors scrollers, other automateds and conventionals. Colina also used BigLite 4.5 and SuperBig 7K fixtures.
"This was the first time using the BigLites and I have to say that if not for them the rig would have seemed empty," adds Colina. "Since there wasn't much of a set, the BigLites filled that void. They cut through the haze with these beautiful big beams that just filled the space with colour. The BigLit

UK - Thousands gathered in London's Trafalgar Square for the third Russian Winter Festival, where Star Events Group took on the challenge of installing its groundbreaking Morbit stage. Performers included The Suvorovsky Ensemble of the Military and Music Academy of the Ministry of Defence (originally set up as a second Moscow school for the Red Army), folk groups including Cossack Soul, the Chuvash State Ensemble of Song and Dance, Pelageya and Russian Song, plus contemporary artists including Ranetki and Tokio and Russian pop legend Garik Sukachiov.
Star Events Group supplied its 13m Morbit stage for the event, plus a 5m front of house structure positioned on top of the Square's terrace. The stage, dressed with large banners supplied by Imaginators, was put into position by a standard tractor unit and built using its pair of integral cranes. These were then used to fly the PA.
"We were very lucky as the weather was fine for both load in on the Friday and load out on the Sunday, despite the horrendous storm that swept the country the previous day," comments Jane Russen, group sales director for Star Events Group. "This is the first time Morbit has been into Trafalgar Square, but with the assistance of the unit's rear steering, the load in went very smoothly."
In charge of the overall production at this, and the previous festivals, was live event company Flying Colours, whose creative director Peter Bird comments: "This is quite a challenging event for a staging company because of the variety of performances it has to accommodate: from c

World - Alternative rock band Tool has added two grandMA full-size, one for lighting control and one for video control, to its manifest for its forthcoming US, European and Australian dates. "Video is a very dominant factor with Tool," notes designer/director Mark Jacobson who has been working with the band since 1996. "All the video is pre-taped; there's no live camera. We don't use spots, just the fixtures we have on the rig to give a more mysterious look.
"I've used the grandMA almost exclusively since 2002," he continues. "It gives me the flexibility to move things around the way I like it to work. I'm not forced to run the show the way whoever designed the board wants me to; instead, the grandMA is very open to the user. I also love its wireless remote."
The lighting complement controlled by the grandMA includes 24x Martin Mac 2000 profiles, 10x Mac 2000 washes, 16x HES StudioBeams, 8x HES Spots, 4x HES StudioCommand 1200s, 6x PixelLine 110ec LED battens, 22x PixelPARs, 13x Martin Atomic 3K Strobes and 5x Eight Lights with Wybron Scrollers. Lighting gear in the US is provided by Delicate Productions; European lighting was supplied by Neg Earth Lights and Australian gear by Bytecraft. Germany - The Bangaluu club in Berlin, housed in the former city centre post office, has been transformed into a sprawling complex that houses a lounge, a dance floor on stage, and a VIP dinner club where the guests literally recline while they dine on a sea of white beds.
The company responsible for the technical design of Bangaluu's sound and light systems was Atlantis Sound of Berlin. Managers Andreas Seeringer and Benjamin Preuß had already had very positive experiences with HK Audio products on earlier projects, and so for their new project they again contacted the sound specialists from southwest Germany.
HK Audio Installation Line speakers were selected for all areas of Bangaluu. The bed-filled restaurant, an area of 220 square metres, was equipped with four IL 12.1 loudspeaker cabinets, four IL 12.2 cabinets, and two IL 218 subwoofers, all in white, driven by a DSM 2050 controller with VX 2400 power amps.
"The sound design for the dinner club alone took two days. On the one hand, the requirements specified low but clear background music for regular restaurant operation, but on the other hand, they also wanted to be able to use the entire system for conference moderation and other live applications," according to Carsten Krause of HK.
The lounge bar in the foyer features eight IL 8.1 cabinets and two IL 115 Subs, plus four IL 10.61 mid/high units for background reinforcement. "Positioning and installation of the sound system was not at all easy, but both customer and manufacturer are very satisfied with the result", adds Krause.
USA - Wybron, Inc. reports that it has been granted US Patent No. 7,163,317 which covers Wybron's core technology relating to its dichroic CMY colour-changing system that allows for colour fades across a wide spectrum, inside profile and wash style fixtures. This technology is integral to Wybron's family of Nexera fixtures.
"For more than 25 years, Wybron has continually invested in innovating and developing advanced lighting systems," said Larry Turner, CEO of Wybron. "We listen to our customers and base our unique designs on their demands. Because of positive customer feedback, we are integrating this patented technology into new products like our fibre-optic illuminator. We intend to launch this new product in the coming weeks."
The Nexera utilises a set of cyan, magenta, and yellow dichroic filters, which are introduced into the beam of light, controlled by DMX values set at the lighting console. The Nexera's filters are etched with a unique pattern to allow for smooth colour across the field.
Nexeras are now being integrated into Wybron's InfoTrace family, joining ColorRams, CXIs and Eclipse dowsers. The InfoTrace system allows full RDM functionality, including remote DMX addressing, discovery and enhanced troubleshooting ability for an entire lighting system.
