USA - Alobar's Lighting and Sound has installed a state-of-the-art lighting and lighting control solution at the Villa Duchesne school in St. Louis, Missouri. The new system, which features an NX1 lighting console from Obsidian Control Systems along with Netron signal distribution, includes an array of Elation KL series and Seven Batten lights, providing the school’s Pavich Theatre with a high level of control and creativity in their lighting design.
Alobar's Lighting and Sound, based in St. Louis, has been a long-standing partner of Villa Duchesne, having provided audio and lighting services for the school for over 20 years, including support for graduation ceremonies, Maypole celebrations, and various school events. When the school sought to revamp its theatre lighting system, they entrusted Alobar's with the task.
Ted Kretschmar of Alobar’s was instrumental in the project, having designed and installed the new system. The space, originally a gymnasium transformed into a makeshift theatre two decades ago, underwent a comprehensive renovation, including a new raked floor. According to Kretschmar, a building that originates from the early 1900s posed its own challenges, as did the fact that the ceiling had already been drywalled when they came in, but the company overcame the obstacles and delivered a comprehensive lighting solution that helped revitalize the space. The rigging aspect of the project was overseen by Scott Johnson from Alobar's.
Kretschmar has been using Obsidian’s Onyx lighting control platform ever since the company took over
UK - PowerBase Gym within Loughborough University has undergone an extensive multi-million-pound upgrade, transforming the facility an impressive strength and conditioning environment. Now boasting 3,200m² of training space, the gym caters to both professional athletes and students seeking top-tier fitness facilities.
Recognising the crucial role audio plays in creating an immersive and motivating fitness environment, the university made a strategic investment in audio equipment for the Powerbase Gym. Partnering with audio visual integrator GVAV, in collaboration with Audiologic and the on-site AV team, the gym now showcases a comprehensive audio solution that enhances the overall workout experience.
The university has a longstanding relationship with Ecler, widely deploying their innovative audio solutions across campus facilities, including teaching spaces and sports facilities. Ecler strikes a balance between performance and return on investment, making it the natural choice for the PowerBase Gym installation.
Ben Spurgeon, technical manager at Audiologic led the design of the system, commenting “Designing an audio system for such an expansive space came with unique challenges, and acoustics played a crucial role in the meticulous planning process. Given the gym's high ceilings, reflective surfaces, and limited mounting locations, the decision was made to implement a surface-mount distributed system. This choice was complemented by straightforward control interfaces, ensuring user-friendly operation.”
The installed system includes an E
UK - Welsh National Opera's head of lighting and sound, Ben Naylor, was delighted to take possession recently of an MDG ATMe haze generator with a digital theFAN unit, both housed conveniently in MDG's purpose-built Vertical Flight Case.
Naylor explained his choice of MDG and this combination of equipment which was supplied by Robe/MDG UK. “We have been looking for a better consistency of coverage of haze for a long time, as the hazers we’ve used in the past have looked patchy and generally produced more haze in the wings than on stage! The MDG ATMe with flight case and fan not only gives us fantastic haze coverage on stage, it is a safe and efficient way to tour the equipment.”
The Vertical Flight Case is a bespoke design with fitted compartments that hold an ATMe haze generator (or any of the Me1, Me2 or MAX 3000 fog generators), theFAN, two, 9kg (20lb) CO2 bottles, a 4L bottle of MDG Neutral fluid and a handy tool drawer - all in a plug-and-play unit of rugged construction that can be simply and safely used for transportation then rolled into position.
The ATMe, theFAN and Vertical Flight Case were purchased for WNO’s general inventory, rather than a specific production. “We do a lot of co-productions with other opera companies and we see MDG specified on many of the productions we work on. It’s also noticeable how, over the past five years, more and more lighting designers are asking for MDG products too.”
Naylor and his tech team have been very impressed with their neatly packaged and moveable new products, and with their ea
Germany Calling - Adele has announced four concerts in a specially-built stadium in Munich this summer - an idea she described as "a bit random, but still fabulous!" The shows will take place in an 80,000-capacity open-air venue in the German city on 2, 3, 9 and 10 August. It will be the first time the singer has performed in mainland Europe since her last tour in 2016.
She said she hadn't been planning any more shows after her current Las Vegas residency and two London shows in 2022. But the star said she had been tempted by the offer of "a one off, bespoke pop-up stadium designed around whatever show I want to put on", which was "pretty much slap bang in the middle of Europe".
Grammy Awards - Taylor Swift stole the show at this year's Grammy Awards, becoming the first performer to win the prize for album of the year four times. The superstar had previously been tied on three best album wins with Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Frank Sinatra. She received the prize from Celine Dion, who made an unexpected appearance amid health fears. Swift also used the event to reveal a surprise new album. Miley Cyrus and Billie Eilish took the other top awards at Sunday's ceremony.
The Los Angeles show was dominated by women, with R&B stars SZA and Victoria Monét and all-female indie supergroup Boygenius picking up multiple awards, and music icons Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell giving rare and poignant performances. Killer Mike was the top male winner, taking three rap trophies. But his success was overshadowed by an apparent altercation backstage, w

USA - KERO-TV is the most recent E.W. Scripps TV station to upgrade their studio lighting with a full Brightline system. Long known for its audio innovations, Bakersfield was home to Bakersfield Sound, producing honky tonk and rock legends like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens.
“Scripps has a storied history in journalism and cable and is well regarded for its latest multi-platform initiatives,” says Sam Cercone, managing partner, Brightline. “Widely known for pioneering new technologies, the expansive lighting upgrades underway throughout the group further solidify its position as a broadcast innovator.
“With the retrofit kit, we can upgrade existing Brightline fluorescent systems to LED at an attractive cost through repurposing fixtures”, says Cercone. “And the high-colour rendering LEDs enhance video. Upgrading to LED reduces energy consumption, renews the lifetime of the fixtures, and lowers maintenance costs, providing significant savings.”
Converting stations in Billings, Boise, Bozeman, Buffalo, Lexington, Milwaukee, Omaha and West Palm Beach, a team of Brightline lighting directors have assisted local facilities with their installations.
Industry veteran Chris Boyd was the lighting director on the recent KERO-TV project. India - With 2023 marking its 99th season; the Tansen Samaroh (Tansen Festival) has stood proud as an annual musical extravaganza that pays tribute to Tansen - classical music composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist.
Hosted every year in the city of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, since its inception; the event's transformation into an international classical music festival can be attributed to the initiatives of former musical institutions – with the 2023 edition of the festival encapsulating a myriad of celebratory activities designed to pay homage to Tansen.
Held from 22-28 December 2023, the Tansen Samaroh unfolded at various locations across the city of Gwalior and a few neighbouring cities as well; and featured participation from several native, national, and international artists who showcased their talent through live performances in Hindustani Classical music as well as Sufi music, in addition to several informative seminars, workshops and exhibitions of various forms of fine art.
Since the soul of any live music event lies in the quality of its sound reproduction; the organizers of the Tansen Samaroh once again relied on the expertise of Phoenix Networks.
A seasoned partner of the Tansen Samaroh, Phoenix Networks deployed audio setups tailored to precisely meet the specific requirements of each individual performance venue.
Mr. Animesh Mishra, founder-director of Phoenix Networks, shared his insights, stating, "At Phoenix Networks, we are consistently driven by challenges, as they prompt us to think outside the box, innovate,

Switzerland - Circus Knie, one of Europe’s oldest, has just-concluded its 2023 season which featured acts ranging from dancing horses to motorcycles spinning around in a sphere at high speeds whilst parallel to the ground. Lighting by Axel Melchior supported every performance
An example of Melchior’s precise work was evident in the way he lit the waterfall stage at this year’s Circus Knie. Made up of a circular pond with a waterfall at its centre, the stage uses 7,000-litres of water each day. Nimble acrobats perform on the surface above the cylindrical waterfall. Accenting their performance, as well as the captivating beauty of the pond and fall, is a collection of 33 Chauvet Professional COLORado PXL Bar 8 motorized RGBW tilting battens supplied by Dushow.
Initially, Melchior considered using another IP65-rated COLORado model, the PXL Bar 16, but switched to the PXL 8 for a more exact fit around the circular stage. “We wanted a colour rendering LED batten with tilt, zoom and pixel mapping that was IP rated,” he recalled. “Our initial thought was the PXL Bar 16, but the layout around the 8m diameter stage didn't allow us to integrate that product, so we opted for the COLORado PXL Bar 8 instead.”
Drawing on the colour capabilities of the PXL Bar 8, Melchior was able to create a range of moods around the water stage, immersing it in an array of colours, often deeply saturated monochromatic hues.
“We use the wash lights mainly used to illuminate the water during the various effects,” he said. “The PLX’s zoom allows us to ob

Portugal - NEXT Audiogroup has introduced the Moka System, a compact plug´n´play line array system optimised for flexible, high power and modular array configurations to fit a diverse range of sound reinforcement applications.
The system comprises three fundamental elements — the Moka Array, Moka Sub and the Moka Sub A.
Its capabilities span from a small to large event, extending all the way to flown line array systems for professional live sound reinforcement at concerts and festivals, complete with adaptable subwoofer arrangements on the ground, or flown if needed.
The Moka Array speaker, encased in a polyurea painted multi-laminate birch plywood enclosure, serves as a line array element. It accommodates a 9” neodymium woofer with a 3” neodymium driver coaxially mounted. The wave guide ensures minimal interference among the arrays, creating a classic line array dispersion pattern with remarkable throw and energy density.
The Moka SUB A is a 15” active bass-reflex subwoofer powered by a 4x2300w Class D amplifier module with DSP. This professional active subwoofer was engineered for high-level and extended low frequency output. Each Moka Sub A can power up to another Moka Sub (passive) and four Moka Arrays.
“We know how flexible all the systems should be to fit the different venues. Having that in mind, we have developed these configurations to allow multiple combinations, and each system Medium, Large and Giant can be converted in a smaller configuration. As an example, the Moka Large is equivalent to 2 Moka Medium which is
Vietnam - With the opening of the Ho Guom Opera in Hanoi, Vietnam has vaulted to the front rank of Asian countries offering the most advanced technical facilities for hosting the performing arts. The new venue was presented to the public in a soft opening in July and has since earned international accolades for its visionary architecture, audience amenities, and an aural environment instantly optimised for any event by the Constellation® acoustic system.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security, which operates the theatre, focused on acoustic priorities led by “a passion for art, and especially, the natural sounds of musical instruments in concert”, says General Tô Lâm, Vietnam’s Minister of Public Security. “We need a place with a good sound field for artists to flourish.”
The large 900-seat hall in the new performing arts complex is a multi-purpose venue equally suited to hosting all arts and entertainment genres. In addition to opera in the Eastern and Western traditions, the hall also hosts symphony concerts, Broadway musicals, ballet, jazz and pop concerts, conferences, and film screenings.
With Constellation, both the intensity and spectral envelope of the reverberant field can be optimised for the event at hand, with multiple zones allowing fine-tuning of the effect both on stage and in different sections of the auditorium. As originally proposed by Vietnamese government officials, the Ho Guom Opera was intended to host classical orchestral and choral concerts.
“As we progressed through the design development the concept
