Belgium - Following a busy spell of exhibitor bookings during the last two months including 3LCD and Belden, the organizers of ISE 2006, Europe's biggest trade show for AV Systems Integrators report that the event next February in Brussels will be twice the size of the 2005 show and is almost sold out.
Mike Blackman, managing director ISE 2006 is delighted, but not surprised by these figures. "The AV Systems Integration market continues to grow at an increasing rate, the outlook for new business is buoyant and we have more than justified our decision earlier this year to invest in a substantial increase in floor space at the Brussels Expo to accommodate the increase in bookings."
Visitors who attend will see a number of new displays, a comprehensive conference including a new manufacturer's forum and a series of displays in the Brussels Expo. The Residential Solutions Area offers visitors an opportunity to see the potential of the Home Theatre and systems integration industry. UK - Weather Cluster is an ambitious multi-screen permanent video installation launched in November 2005 at the Clacton County High School. The installation is part of 'Coast', a major visual arts project which started in 2003. Over four years, a series of newly commissioned permanent and temporary artworks will be installed along and around the Essex Coast.
Hanging in the atrium of Clacton High School's new wing, Weather Cluster is a complex web of screens and data-cables, which resembles a 21st Century chandelier. This cloud of thirty screens emits weather conditions from around the world. Students from the school film weather conditions at every opportunity; these video clips form a computer database, which constantly searches the Internet to ascertain the local climate. As the weather conditions change, the computers broadcast the relevant video loops. Year after year, the database will grow as students continue to contribute their films, enriching the weather library.
Stage Electrics provided the technical expertise for construction and installation of the cluster. Twenty-six TFT monitors were suspended from a custom-designed rig manufactured and tested at Stage Electrics' premises in Bristol.
The Bristol team designed and manufactured bespoke hanging brackets to allow monitors to be mounted at specific angles and to incorporate safety features. An equipment rack was incorporated into the design, mounted on the metal substrate and covered with a 'top hat' making it accessible yet aesthetically pleasing. Before any work started on the project, a full scale
- Doha was the destination in November when Stage One worked for technical director, Adam Wildi and production company, The Bank, on the official opening ceremony of the 'Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence'. Built by the Government of Qatar, Aspire offers an enormous complex of sporting amenities, providing unparalleled facilities for training and developing student athletes.
Stage One was responsible for building the Paul Bonomini designed set for the opening ceremony, which highlighted the history of the region, including shipping and pearl diving. Students of Aspire played a starring role in the performance.
The set included several stages, a huge desert backdrop, billowing wave effects and the movement of a dozen aerial performers swimming 'underwater' across the set, using Stage One's Q-Motion control system. To achieve this, Stage One mapped each individual performers movements, using a joystick control, and recorded them as macros in the Q-pos controller. These programmed movements were then played back in real time, saving huge amounts of rehearsal and programming time.
Jim Tinsley, technical director, Stage One, said, "We understand how important live events are and the need to get it right." He added, "Our QMotion control system is ideal for an event like this as it allows the accurate movement of people and objects in a very theatrical way and importantly, it is incredibly reliable."
Designed to celebrate sporting achievement, Aspire has the largest indoor sports dome in the world, providing not only a landmark development fo
UK - Buro Happold engineers dominated this year's Teambuild competition taking home the overall winner prize as well as the award for best contract strategy.
The competition, run by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), sets a series of challenges for groups of up to six engineers under the age of 30 to test their team working skills. Each team has to provide the necessary, multi-disciplinary skills to cover all aspects of masterplanning, building design and construction, tested through completing five stages of a build project, based on a real site.
The winning team, named Imhotep after the architect credited with building the first pyramid in ancient Egypt, included Rachel Banham, Rachel Sandbrook, Ivan Chan, Ben Worth and Ruth Bailey, all based in Buro Happold London, and Alex MacLaren, an external architect.
"Congratulations to all our staff who took part," says Mike Cook, Buro Happold partner. "The competition is a serious test of the broad range of skills an engineering team needs in the real world and it's gratifying that our people fared so well. One message from the competition, which all young engineers would do well to heed, is the importance of effective communication. As projects become ever more complex, and boundaries between the professions blurred, so a team effectively presenting the whole range of multi-disciplinary skills - to each other and the client - is vital."
This year's challenge was to develop the conceptual design for a primary school and community centre based on the Meridian Delta Development site, beside

UK - Windsor is rapidly becoming home to a thriving community of stylish bars and nightclubs, designed to standards more usually found in the capital, just 25 miles away. The latest addition to Windsor's nightlife is Bar Indigo, built underneath the arches supporting a railway line, with all the acoustic challenges to match.
Privately owned by local Berkshire entrepreneur Duane Clark, Bar Indigo comprises two discrete areas; a separate bar and chill-out zone at the front of the club, and a much larger bar and dancefloor at the back. The long tunnel-like shape of the club premises ensures a great architectural space, but also offered, "fairly foul acoustics" for sound installer Paul Knight of Ascot Audio.
"The reverb time is horrendous, like being in a cave," says Knight. "The only solution was to get everyone as near to a direct source as possible, so that the reflections don't come into play."
Knight chose NEXO's PS8 loudspeaker for the job, installing 12 cabinets in the larger bar and beside the dancefloor, with four more PS8 units custom-sprayed in white and ceiling-mounted in the front bar. "There isn't a better small box than the NEXO PS8; if there is, I haven't heard it," says Knight. "The shape of the vault dictated the sound design somewhat, we couldn't put them all down one wall, so they are fixed on either side of the room, mounted high up on the arches and angled quite sharply down at the dancefloor."
The new Tecton Series power amplifiers from Camco power the system. Ascot Audio used two Tecton 24.
USA - Now in its ninth year, the Rock 4 Xmas Foundation is presenting its annual holiday tour, covering over thirty cities throughout the US. Again this year, Community Professional Loudspeakers is donating six of the company's M12 stage monitors for the events.
Founded in 1996 by Morrison Music and Production's Wayne Morrison, the Rock 4 XMas Foundation works to bring food, gifts and holiday spirit to less fortunate families by hosting the annual concert series. Past shows have featured performances by Bad Animals, Blue Oyster Cult, Randy Jackson, and members of Toto, Quiet Riot, Dio, Vanilla Fudge and many others.
"The annual Rock 4 XMas tour is a massive effort, and has grown bigger every year," remarked Morrison. "We'd never be able to pull it off without the help of our sponsors. Community has been a generous supporter of the organization, and we really appreciate their contributions. The response of these Community speakers is incredible! We can finally hear what's going on clearly, and perform with the dynamics the music needs."
"Every autumn, Wayne and his group work tirelessly for a really worthy cause," added Julia Lee, Community's director of sales and marketing. "They're an inspiration to people in our industry and elsewhere, and we're proud to be associated with Rock 4 XMas."

China - Aviom, manufacturer of the Pro16 Monitor Mixing System, has announced that a digital snake consisting of five AN-16/i Input Modules, five AN-16/o Output Modules and three A-16D A-Net Distributors was installed for audio distribution at the opening ceremony at the 10th National Games at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Stadium in Nanjing, China. The Aviom gear was supplied by Acton Audio & Musical Instruments, (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., which is part of the Tom Lee Group.
"For the opening ceremony, more than 60 audio signals generated from the mixing console needed to be distributed to processors located 300m away," comments Jeffrey Lim, Aviom's international sales manager for Asia. "System designers Ruan Feng Audio & Lighting Company Limited decided against using a conventional analog snake system, choosing instead to use a distributed audio system from Aviom."
The Aviom digital audio distribution system eliminated the need for long multi-core analog audio cables, and their potential for added ground loops and hum. The audio signals generated from the mixing console were connected to AN-16/i Input Modules where they were converted into high-quality 24-bit, uncompressed digital audio in the form of Aviom's proprietary A-Net data transmission protocol. A-Net allows digital audio to be distributed over inexpensive, industry standard Category-5e cables up to 150m. In this installation, A-16D A-Net Distributors were used to extend the digital cables to 300m. The A-Net distribution distance can be extended simply by using another A-Net device.

Hungary - The Palace of Arts is a multifunctional and extraordinary architectural construction. Situated along the banks of the Danube on the Pest side of the Lágymányos Bridge in Budapest, it is described by the Palace of Arts Co. as "a place where tradition and avant-garde can coexist and interact fruitfully, in all branches of the arts."
The building's design - by Zoboki, Demeter and Associates - and a 21st century technological backbone enable the staging of high quality and large-scale performances, bringing together various branches of the arts under one roof. Its permanent residents include the Ludwig Museum, the National Concert Hall and the Festival Theatre. It is part of the Millennium City Centre, a major urban renewal development program in Budapest that includes the adjacent National Theatre.
Client and main contractor on the project, Arcadom Co. Ltd., approached Martin Architectural's Hungarian representative, LISYS Co. Ltd., to create a dynamic outdoor illumination solution on three sides of the building. LISYS proposed a color changing scheme using Martin Architectural's range of Exterior luminaires.
On three sides of the building LISYS installed Exterior 600 fixtures on custom made poles 5 to 10m high. Additional Exteriors of different types (Exterior 600, Exterior 600 Compact, and Exterior 200) are located on the roof to illuminate the upper cube of the building. Most of the Exteriors used on the project are equipped with extra wide angle optics. LED strips on the sides of the building break up the colours of the large surfaces.
Georgia - A football stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia provided the unlikely location for a huge rock concert - in honour of the BP operated Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline running some 1100 miles between Baku in Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea, to a newly constructed terminal at Ceyhan on the Mediterranean.
RG Jones was contracted to provide the audio - based around their Synco Martin three-way W8LC/WLX line array system - for an event which was headlined by Simply Red and staged at the Mikheil Meshki Stadium, home of Lokomotiv FC.
The company were working for Steve Nolan's Chromatic Productions, who in turn had been contracted by Neos Creative, BP's main contractor for the event.
RG Jones' engineer, Simon Honywill explained: "BP as operators of the BTC pipeline are staging events to celebrate the completion of this pipeline which runs through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. Our first show took place in Baku, Azerbaijan in May and we have now completed the Georgia event where as well as 155 miles of pipeline being laid, two massive pump stations have also been constructed."
Part of the cargo flown out in a massive Antonov aircraft were 44 x W8LC enclosures and 20 x WLX subs, which formed the main PA system. Honywill reports that the original venue earmarked for the event had been a nearby park. "But it was not suitable for a free concert, as the authorities had no idea how many people would turn up - so it was agreed to use the football stadium next door instead."

UK - Architectural and feature lighting specialists LTP has supplied nearly 300 Color Kinetics LED fixtures for a lighting installation in the atrium of Prudential Assurance's City Place House, London HQ.
The lighting feature, which involves the up-lighting of 10 various sized bubble tanks, was created by architect/designers Natalia Kudriavtseva with Sean Mahoney of Hoare Lee, and specified by LTP after referral from Architainment, CK's UK distributor.
To up-light the tanks LTP's project manager Terry Reeves chose 92 pieces of Colour Kinetics Cove MX for their optical qualities as well as their practicality when it came to the actual installation.
The top of the atrium is glass panelled, and therefore filled with daylight for most of the year, so any lighting had to be exceptionally bright to hold its own. The MX is a Powercore fixture, which requires only a data enabler at the start of the run with a 230V power feed and the control input from a DMX device. This feeds a single four-core cable which passes through each MX fixture delivering unified mains power and data for up to 90 fixtures.
This neatly deals with the issues of running power and data to inaccessibly located fixtures, cutting the need for any subsequent power supplies along the way, saving costs to the client and also ensuring a highly efficient installation process.
The MX fixture digitally transforms the 230V down to 24V. Through chromasic technology, (i.e. the onboard processor used in each fixture) smart addressing is possible for the fast uploading of ID tagging through the data enabler,
Europe - An EU-wide campaign will start next year to address the safety of young people at work as according to European statistics they run a 50% higher risk of work accidents than other workers.
A 16-year-old worker's legs were broken less than two hours into his first day at work as he fell from the footplate of an 18-ton refuse lorry. He was riding on the outside of the vehicle because there was not enough room in the cab for him and the three other workers. A 17 year-old girl lost part of a finger only one hour of starting her holiday job. Her fingers were crushed in a machine at the bakery where she worked.
Figures from the UK Health and Safety Executive show that Men in the 20-24 age group suffer the second highest total incidence of non-fatal work place accidents. Women in the same age group are the fifth most vulnerable group.
Accidents like these are a daily occurrence and a serious threat to EU's 58 million young people. According to Eurostat data, the risk of work accidents is at least 50% higher among those aged 18-24 years than in any other age category. Accidents and damage to the health of young workers are particularly distressing where the young person has to live with the consequences for the rest of their lives. Worse still is the premature death of a youngster from a usually avoidable work accident.
"Young persons are less likely to recognize the risk of accidents and even when they do, they may be less able to take appropriate action. And sometimes they are simply assigned to tasks beyond their capabilities or are not provided adequ

UK - HSL is supplying all the LED light sources for the current series of the X-Factor. Lighting director/designer for the show is Dave Davey, the set designer is Christopher George and it's directed by Jonathan Bullen and recorded weekly for ITV at Fountain Studios in Wembley, London.
It's the first time HSL has supplied the popular series, and follows on from a busy year in the TV world for the Blackburn-based company. The kit comprises six 10 x 2.5m high resolution Soft-LED curtains and 180 Color Kinetics I-Color tiles which were purchased specially for the series. There's also 130 JTE PixelLine 1044 battens and 120 lengths of Pulsar ChromaStrip from HSL.
Both Davey and George wanted to explore various LED concepts in the show visuals. They were looking for a single source supplier for all the LED products, which is where HSL stepped into the breach, supplying all this and requisite rigging for the Soft-LED. HSL's Mike Oates says: "It's our first time working with Dave and Christopher, and we're really delighted to be working with new clients on such a high profile series."
Both Davey and George wanted an LED floor, and they already had their eyes on the CK kit. When they discovered that they could remove the white plastic boxes covering the tiles and replace them with a very slightly frosted floor, so you could still see the definition of the LEDs through them, they decided that this was exactly the right fixture.
The SoftLED was a George concept from the outset, and it's used to wrap the whole back wall of the studio180°. The show relies on th
UK - Design and Communications company Imagination has once again unveiled a crowd-pleasing Christmas lighting display today, continuing their 25-year tradition of revelling in the fun of the festive season.
The company's redbrick headquarters has been adorned with a magnificent arrangement featuring a giant glowing garland 60ft in diameter. The garland, which was constructed out of 300 Christmas trees and weighs around a tonne, is threaded with 10,000 sparkling white lights and 20 red bows, each 5ft in width. Clusters of illuminated berries have been created out of red bulbs woven into wire mesh spheres, while a giant neon bow perches atop the glowing structure. The Imagination building itself is the backdrop for the garland, flooded in a wash of blue light.
On the first day of the festive month, staff were greeted inside Imagination with a beautifully decorated atrium. The walls of the five-storey expanse have been flooded in a festive red light and the floor scattered with holly gobos, while minimalist sculptured fur trees set atop stands of berries frame the space.
The construction of the lighting display took place over a period of 48 hours and was launched on the first of December. Imagination once again enlisted the efforts of a team of electricians, riggers, cleaners, neon fixers, tree decorators, metal workers and foresters, who used a 20-tonne crane and giant cherry pickers to construct the decorations and transform the building.
The garland display follows on from a strong tradition of festive lighting at Imagination and this year's design along wi
UK - A stunning new multi-level restaurant and nightclub has opened on the seafront at Weston-super-Mare - on a landmark site that has previously housed Joe Montana's, Volts and latterly Stars. Now known as Seven VII, directors Vas and Nick Siangoplis and Michael Michaels (of Lazerlight Ltd) have already spent £1 million converting the sophisticated art deco ground floor, and will commence work on the other two floors after Christmas.
Named after the seven deadly sins, the first phase - designed by Nick Siangoplis - also features al-fresco, dining with freshly cooked food served in a conservatory and a terrace bar with large umbrellas and patio heaters.
Lazerlight has given equal priority to the sound and vision, entrusting Bristol-based Bristol Architectural Sound Services (BASS) with fitting a Martin Audio sound system. BASS's Mike Brice has split the ground floor into eight separate sound zones, using the Allen & Heath iDR8 as his DSP/router (with output expander). The signal source accesses a vast array of Martin AQ series products (all provided by wholesalers Batmink Ltd), including 12 AQ8s and three AQ210 subs (serving the peripheral area), and four Crown-driven AQ12s (and a pair of AQ215s) concentrated on the dancefloor. All the mid/highs are ceiling-mounted on special Powerdrive brackets.
"We wanted a high-spec DJ system and via the Crown amps we can deliver 1500W onto the dancefloor, with still plenty of headroom in the system," says Brice, who has equipped the DJ booth with an AQ10 reference monitor. He also sensibly turned to multiple
