UK - Olmec Advanced Materials, based in Sheffield, has introduced a new product to the lighting design world. Surelight Super Bright wire is an innovative new way of providing illumination for TV, Cinema, and the Theatre industry. Surelight Super Bright is a low voltage; flexible wire, providing a 360° light source available in all the colours of the rainbow including white.
Recent users include Scottish Opera for special effect lighting on its productions of Magic Flute, The Ring Cycle, Aida and Minotaur. Ian Irvine, lighting manager at Scottish Opera said: "Surelight was a phenomenal success, we would never have been able to illuminate the stage, costumes or props in the way intended without Surelight and we keep finding new ways to use it."
London's National Theatre used Surelight for its highly successful production of Philip Pullman's novel His Dark Materials. Hew Llewellyn, production manager at The National was delighted with the effect produced, he said: "We created a Demon Splitter, a gruesome guillotine of light." Llewellyn sees many possible uses in future productions particularly for costume lighting.
Darlowsmithson productions used Surelight on the recently-filmed Lost Buildings series, commissioned by Channel 4 TV and The Discovery Channel, the first programme of which will be shown on 26 July at 8.00pm on C4. This first programme looks at the Drury Lane Theatre, which was pulled down in the 18th Century. Richard Herd (one of production team at Darlowsmithson) said: "We wanted to find a way to
PLASA's mid-June AGM in Wales proved an excellent opportunity for members to learn more about the work of the Association and offer feedback on some of its ongoing initiatives. It also turned out to be one of the best social events of the year for members, and part of the credit for that must go to PLASA insurance providers Allan Chapman & James, who kindly sponsored the pre-dinner drinks.
To find out what else took place during the day, you can read a more detailed report on page 38. We are now looking at the options for 2005 and will announce details shortly.
Members had an opportunity to ask anything they liked during the open Question & Answer session at the AGM. Andrew Bishop, Diane Grant and Matthew Griffiths provided the answers.
Following a detailed review of its Technical Standards office, and a consultation meeting with members, PLASA has refocused its role and relaunched it as the Technical Resources Office. Key initiatives already in place, or to be introduced shortly, include:
The creation of a PLASA Standardization Programme utilizing PLASA member interaction to develop industry-specific technical standardization (not BSI/European standards), codes of practice and guidance.
Increased availability and accessibility to British Standards, industry codes of practice and guidance documentation.
Databases of testing facilities and other member technical support functions.
An online forum open to all in which the more common problems discussed could be the trigger mechanism for deciding if a subject is a candidate for involvement in the standard or guidance writing process.
Downloadable forms (risk assessments, policy documents).
Recognized training support in Technical and Health & Safety areas.
In terms of Standardization, many members expressed a desire to have a process that mirrored the committee-style approach adopted by ESTA in the US. With a similar approach to consensus-building, PLASA could then develop a vehicle in which industry standardization and guidance could be produced. As a result, we are looking for companies and individuals willing to join a steering group.
Already in place is the new online access to numerous British and European standards. All PLASA members need to do to gain access is to contact the PLASA office with the details of their requirements, and w

UK - Event company Logistik co-ordinated and produced the Athens 2004 Ball - a high profile charity live event staged at London's Battersea Park Marquee, for Sparks, The British Olympic Association and The Sir Steve Redgrave Charitable Trust.
Over 1,000 people enjoyed the event during an evening of entertainment hosted by Radio 2's Jeremy Vine and Sir Steve Redgrave - an official 'send-off' party to wish the GB Olympic team success at the upcoming Athens Olympics. Leeds and London-based Logistik were called in to oversee the event's creative and technical production including the design, graphics, dressing and venue themeing for the event.
The night culminated in live performances by international artists including Gabrielle, Mike & The Mechanics and Amy Winehouse. It was recorded for broadcast by Radio 2, and a post-event DVD will be produced by Logistik Vision, the company's video production department.
Logistik's production director Attila Keskin and project manager Will Sutton headed up the team. Theming was Olympic-orientated, with the main room's set and scenic backdrop including a set of bespoke Olympic-style rings, complete with British Olympic Association branding, created by Logistik Inspire, the company's theming division.
Keskin - an experienced LD and production co-ordinator before joining the Logistik team - approached some of the UK's top production suppliers and asked for good deals to allow the charities to gain the maximum benefits from the event. Lighting equipment was supplied by VLPS, sound by GPA, live video production by XL Video and cr
USA - In mid-July 2003, Mice Creative awarded Total Structures the contract to fabricate the elliptical acoustic canopy which is flown under the new Hollywood Bowl structure in Los Angeles, California. The Bowl dates back to the late 1920s and several attempts have been made over the years to improve the acoustics so that members of the orchestra could hear each other. The last incarnation included the installation of 11 fibreglass spheres of various sizes under the direction of renowned architect, Frank Gehry.
The Design Architects for the new facility was Hodgetts + Fung Design Associates, with Gruen Associates acting as project architect for the main client and owner, Los Angeles County. The project, essentially comprised demolishing the existing Bowl and rebuilding from the ground up - the buildings on either side of the main roof structure to house new dressing rooms and production areas. The old bowl structure could fit inside the new Bowl with some 20ft to spare!
The new Bowl incorporates a radical acoustical approach developed by Chris Jaffe of Jaffe Holden Acoustics, Inc. Large panels hinge on the bottom chord of the cross-stage trusses and deflect the sound back down to the stage in a controlled way. The new acoustic canopy measures some 78ft by 68ft and is supported at a 10° angle below the main roof structure by inclined tubular steel struts. The principal components of the canopy are an elliptical perimeter ladder truss with integral catwalk, four cross-stage triangular trusses which support acoustic panels and three lighting battens.

USA - US manufacturer Light Stream Controls (LSC) has announced that it is re-branding its lighting controllers under the name of its affiliated Elation Professional division. All LSC controllers will now bear the Elation brand name in every market where the products are sold.
The name change was implemented in light of the growing popularity its controllers have enjoyed in Europe, Australia and other areas of the world where the Elation brand is known, according to Scott Davies, general manager of the American DJ Group of Companies, the parent company of both LSC and Elation Professional.
LSC controllers are being marketed internationally by the same distributors, to the same customers, as our Elation lighting products, so it makes sense that they should have the same brand identity," commented Davies. "This is especially true because the Elation name has become so well-known throughout Europe and other international markets, where it's synonymous with the highest quality professional lighting."
The company manufactures a complete line of lighting controllers - DMX, intelligent and non-intelligent - for a wide range of entertainment uses. Included are controllers aimed at lighting programmers, small to mid-level productions, rental inventory, smaller light shows, clubs, DJs, musical performances, stage shows, theatres, churches, and large entertainment venues.

UK - Lighting Technology Projects has supplied and commissioned architectural lighting for the Ten Pin Megabowl complex in Cambridge. Color Kinetics' ColorBlast 12 LED wash units were specified by the Nottingham-based lighting design practice Into Lighting, for the eye-catching installation in the venue's main hall. LTP's Terry Reeves worked closely on the project with designer Jonathan Rycroft. The wall-washing, colour changing fixtures were chosen for their design and uniform colour range.
Other factors were cost effectiveness and build quality, and also Lighting Technology's recommendation after using them on numerous other projects. Terry Reeves explains, "The ColorBlast 12 gave the right quality of light output and is also easily controllable." From the initial design brief, LTP worked with Into Lighting, creating several different solutions in a mock-up scenario. The end result, featuring the ColorBlast 12s, was a clear winner. From there 'LTP' liaised with the electrical contractors to supply and commission these and the other products in the scheme.
The lighting highlights the back wall of a busy video gaming area, slightly separated from the bowling alleys. The wall has a raised block-work design, which is up-lit with the 12 ColorBlasts. The creative effect is an interesting illuminated break-up to the room, separating the gaming area from the main bowling alleys and providing dynamic relief from the intensive environment of video screens and game sound effects.
LTP also supplied Anytronics RGBY four-colour 'DFB' (digital fluorescent ballasts
USA - ETC has announced the release of version 1.8.0 software for its Emphasis lighting control system. The release is part of the ETCNet2 Version 4 Suite, compatible and interoperable with other Net2 products. UK - Stand-up, sausages, a shindig and the support of Stage Electrics, marked the first ever fund-raising event at Battersea Art Centre. Stage Electrics donated the use of sound and lighting equipment to support BAC's contribution to developing theatre arts on a local, national and international level. BAC's programme structure helps new work to grow by showing it at unfinished stages to an audience. The collaborative approach this fosters means that BAC is a creative breeding ground for the next generation of theatre makers, not just actors and directors but for lighting designers, sound artists and technical staff.
Stewart Lee, comedian and long-term fan of the trailblazing theatre, organized an extraordinary line up of comic talent in aid of BAC's fundraising campaign. Lee is also the co writer of Jerry Springer The Opera, the breakaway smash hit that began its life at BAC. Harry Hill (TV Burp), Lee Mack (ITV's Sketch Show), Catherine Tait (BBC2's Catherine Tait Show), Stewart Lee (This Morning with Richard Not Judy), Simon Amstell (C4's Popworld), Peter Baynham as 'Peter' (Fist Of Fun, I Am Not An Animal), Arnold Brown (inventor of Alternative Comedy), Kevin Eldon (Nighty Night), Richard Thomas and Kombat Opera (Jerry Springer The Opera), scoffed gourmet sausages and rocked the mikes in front of a sell-out crowd. BAC is fund-raising to maintain current levels of activity in light of a reduction in funding from Wandsworth Borough Council.

USA - ATI was recently commissioned to custom-manufacture a 64-input Paragon II Production live sound mixing console for the Grand Ole Opry House, home of performances of the world-famous Grand Ole Opry. The new PII replaced a 64-channel Paragon P40 that had served every Opry show for the past 11 years.
The flexibility and functionality of the ATI Paragon PII Production includes state-of-the-art dynamics, including ATI's patented compressor, plus four-band parametric EQ on each input channel. The console can generate eight stereo subgroups, eight mono aux sends, four stereo aux sends, eight stereo matrix outputs, two mono main outputs and two stereo main outputs, allowing it to fit any application. Each channel also provides two variable direct outs. Onboard scene automation utilizes the company's Distributed Intelligence design for improved performance over traditional systems.
The PII is used for the FOH mix for all Opry productions. The FOH mix includes the backline of Opry musicians with various instruments like the fiddle, mandolin, bass, drums, steel guitars, acoustic guitars, as well as several inputs for vocals. Tommy Hensley, FOH engineer for the Grand Ole Opry explained: "For the Opry, I normally run 58 channels. Some folks think it's a simple show, but the reality is just the opposite. In one Opry performance, we can do 60 acts in two-and-a-half hours. The show is broken up into 15-minute segments with four acts each; the maximum is two songs. The PII has recallable faders and soft switches and keeps group assignments so it saves me a lot of time

UK - Blitz Sound has purchased a quantity of iP2100 Lab.gruppen amplifiers, selected for the show Songs My Mother Taught Me for sound designer, Mike Walker. The show opens at the Savoy Theatre on 6 July.
Following its Broadway success, Songs My Mother Taught Me is a one-woman show featuring Lorna Luft, daughter of Judy Garland, who reminiscences about her childhood with a number of her mother's most famous songs including Come Rain Or Shine, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, The Trolley Song and, appropriately, For Me And My Gal. The show also features tributes to famous figures in Judy Garland's life including Harold Arlen, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.
This follows other recent purchases of Lab.gruppen for theatre shows by Blitz. Specified by Martin Levan, Lab.gruppen iP1150 amplifiers were used for Phantom of the Opera in Madrid and, in a refit of some of the core equipment of Phantom in London, Lab.gruppen iP2100 amplifiers were chosen.
Commenting on the purchases, Blitz regional manager, Chris Jordan, said: "Lab.gruppen is being specified more extensively in theatre as it continues to prove its audio quality and dependability. It's a real credit to the original equipment used on Phantom in London, which has been running for 17 years, but it was time for an upgrade to the better sounding product now available and to ensure the continued reliability of the system."
Lab.gruppen's UK distributor, Sennheiser, has supplied all of the amplifiers to Blitz.

Denmark - Whilst in Catholic countries, the carnival season is generally the week before Lent, the Scandinavian begin looking out their red noses at the end of May. Such at least is the case in Aalborg, scene of northern Europe's biggest carnival and place of annual pilgrimage for children of all ages. This year's theme was 'Atlantis' and the oganizers of the event relied upon the skill and equipment of DBlux, with Ascon, the Danish EVI Audio partner.
The DBlux team had their work cut out: they were tasked to provide the ideal sound system, not only for the highly varied programme of musical events, but also to ensure high quality intelligibility for the announcements, speeches of welcome and any urgent messages that might need to be conveyed. After consultation with Ascon, the DBlux technicians opted for a mixture of Dynacord Cobra-4, Electro-Voice X-Array, Delta-Max and RX-systems, with EV amplification and a variety of Midas consoles rounding off the system. Ascon chief, Helge Stensballe, said: "We had no technical problems the entire weekend, a thoroughly satisfied client and an enthusiastic response from the audiences. In short, the event was a total success."

USA - Following the live broadcast of the National Hockey League's post-season awards show, CBC lighting designer Brad Dickson praised the 24 Vari*Lite VL3000 Spot luminaries he used in the rig: "The VL3000 Spot was the main light," Dickson said, "mainly because of its zoom range. In the set itself, we had a bunch of headers, so we were tight for real estate. We needed fixtures that would give us as much spread possible in a short space. That's why the VL3000 luminaires were chosen."
Although the trim was 27ft, the set height was just 20ft, and the point of focus was only 10 to 15 feet away in some places. The 10- 60° zoom range on the VL3000 Spot luminaires provided Dickson with the smooth beam spread he needed. Because the show was televised live on CBC, Dickson also needed fixtures that would provide good skin tone colours. The ability of the VL3000 Spot luminaires to "get the green out" was another attribute that made it valuable during the production.
"The variable CTO is nice, but in television, we also need that variable minus green," Dickson explained. "With most fixtures you can get close with colour temperature, but you've got that green spike you want to get rid of. The real deal-maker is how much light magenta you can dial in to get the green out. The VL3000 fixtures allow you to do that. The VL3000 Spot is what the VL7 was trying to be years ago."
Part of the design requested by the NHL was for Dickson and programmer Steve Plotkin to create a look so that the floor of the John Bassett Theatre look
UK - Richard Martin Lighting has a well-established reputation for bringing its customers new and innovative products, and its latest purchase is no exception, says the company, whose search for a control system that could respond to the ever-growing complexities of television lighting has ended with the new Compulite Vector. In fact, so impressed was the company, that it invested in three new Vector Blue consoles from Stagetec Distribution, which have now been delivered and are ready for hire.
With its intuitive Windows-based operating system, two TFT touchscreens, multi-use encoder wheels, backlit trackball and motorized faders, users can quickly select, modify and update information using an interface which is familiar to them. The ability to group faders to provide a 'super playback' means operators can have absolute control over all playback parameters.
Vector's dual processor architecture also means that this desk is proving to be one of the most stable desks on the market. And with up to 16 DMX outputs, 999 cue lists, 9999 groups and nine library categories, Vector not only deals efficiently with channel-heavy fixtures, but it is ready to deal with technology as it develops. RML says that the features and functionality of this desk will enable their customers to realize the most intricate of design ideas, in the fastest time with the minimum amounts of stress.
