Italy - For the past 400 years the Roman city of Pompeii has been one of Italy's top tourist attractions. Famously buried under volcanic ash for over 1500 years, since 1599 the remarkably-preserved city has been excavated, revealing an insight into the life of the Romans. Now, the city's past has truly met the future, with a Yamaha installation telling the story of one house's inhabitants.

Today around 2.5m tourists visit the city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, every year. Yamaha equipment has been installed in one dwelling, playing a key role in a multimedia experience which gives visitors the experience of what life in Pompeii was like at the time of the eruption.

Commissioned by the Special Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritage of Naples and Pompeii, the installation is in the house of Iulius Polibius, an affluent citizen.

Canada - Fresh from a whirlwind European tour, Canadian indie pop band Stars are now back on home ground for their Fall tour with a DiGiCo SD8 digital mixing console at Front of House.

Specified by FOH engineer Kevin Madigan, who had just finished an extensive tour with Crosby, Stills and Nash using a D5 and supplied via DiGiCo's US and Canadian distributors, Group one and Gerr Audio respectively, the SD8 was a good fit for the Stars tour.

"I already knew the SD8 would sound great," says Madigan. "And it fit the bill perfectly for this tour; great sound quality, functional layout, small footprint, and suitable input capabilities."

Madigan utilises 38 inputs for the SD8's 60 available flexi channels for the band and picks up 'racks and stacks' daily. "I usually run four or five outputs; left, right, sub, front fill and sometimes a balcony feed, then I

UK - Rental company Adlib Audio reports that its L-Acoustics K1 line source system has been employed on a diverse range of events since its purchase this summer.

"We were lucky enough to be able to work the K1 on many widely different styles of gigs soon after it arrived," says Adlib's Tony Szabo. "This included the Radio City Liverpool multi act arena show, the 12,000 capacity Green Man festival, a 94m long big top tent at the Leeds festival and a show with German band Pur at the Schalke stadium, in combination with Network Rental Agent Sirius. On all these gigs and others, the K1 has lived up to expectations and more."

One of the things to impress Szabo is the K1's rigging, which he describes as "the best cabinet rigging on the market. We have confirmed that the 'L-Acoustics method' of putting the K1 up and bringing it down is actually the best way.

USA - "Thirty years ago most churches had an organ, a piano, a microphone on the pulpit, and a pair of column loudspeakers," says Chuck Walthall, whose Pensacola, Florida design and consulting practice covers both acoustics and technical systems. "But churches have responded to the impact of entertainment on our society, and yesterday's sanctuary has evolved into today's worship cenre. Worship now incorporates elements from the worlds of theatre and live music, and the technology has changed to reflect that."

A case in point is First Baptist Church Cleveland in Cleveland, Tennessee. When the church decided that its campus in downtown Cleveland was no longer meeting its needs, it set out to build a new facility whose technical capabilities would support and enhance a variety of worship styles, including contemporary services with a strong sound and media compo

China - As part of a week-long visit to China to provide training for their distributor BVCAM, and visit a number of important clients, loudspeaker manufacturer APG took over the Haidian Christian Church in west Beijing for a full day of demos of their new-generation products. The ultra-modern HCC, now the largest Christian church in China, provided an imposing backdrop for the event which was attended by around 50 sound engineers and consultants from a variety of professional audio backgrounds.

BVCAM's managing director, Danny Huen, was pleased to note that the event was a great success. "It was very well attended," he stated. "We had delegates from rental companies, TV stations, theatres, nightclubs, and stadia. It has to be said that some of them were sceptical about doing a demo like this in a church because even a modern church like this one is a notoriously

UK - Southbank Centre is adopting a more flexible approach to digital sound mixing through its three flagship venues, the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room - thanks to the acquisition of several Soundcraft Vi1's from Richard Nowell Sound Services (RNSS).

Based at London's Southbank Centre, the experienced rental company has been servicing the audio requirements of the concert halls for many years.

Technical director, Eddy Smith, decided that a more flexible platform was needed for incoming sound engineers than was offered by their existing digital desks. "We didn't feel the sound of the preamps was as good as we wanted, nor were the configurations particularly user friendly - which was important when shows needed to be set up quickly."

He asked Richard Nowell to arrange a three-desk shoot-out and the Vi1 came out on top in terms of usabilit

Italy - Billy Cobham played to an excited large crowd cramming St Peter Square in Galatina, on the latest stop on his Palindrome Tour. It was one of the highlights of the 12th season of the Cloister Concerts.

The audience was absolutely pleased and excited by the quality of the sound Proel equipment provided for this musician and his band, whose performance included a full range of tunes ranging from jazz to funk, and from rock to soul."

Netherlands Protest - Dutch singers, painters and TV presenters have demonstrated in the Netherlands against government plans to slash arts funding. The Dutch government has pledged to cut 200m euros (£171m) from its arts budget over the next five years. It has also approved plans to raise sales tax on theatre, cinema and concert tickets from 6% to 19%.

Organisers said the cuts had been justified by lawmakers who argued the arts were only for the "wealthy elite". "A 13% rise in sales tax hits all of the public because tickets get more expensive," organisers said in a manifesto published online. "By cutting culture budgets and raising tax on tickets, culture will become an elitist pastime and less accessible for people with less money."

In Amsterdam, around 20,000 people gathered on Saturday afternoon on the Leidseplein to listen to music and

Europe - The Peter Gabriel New Blood, Scratch My Back Tour features the singer and a 54-piece orchestra - No drums, no guitars. Gabriel and the New Blood Orchestra performed cover songs to sellouts at amphitheaters and arenas throughout Europe this spring and fall. Audinate's digital media networking technology Dante was chosen by Brit Row Productions as a key part of the production package.

Because of the complexities of delivering an even orchestral sound to large arena audiences, a number of finely controlled zones were required. Richard Sharrat, FOH engineer for the tour, used nine sends from the Digico SD-7 to Dante enable products. In order to ensure that these sends were combined properly, a Yamaha DME 64 with a Dante-MY16-AUD was used to transfer the AES outputs of the console to the entire Dante network.

The DME also allows for fine system matrix control and te

USA - Aviom Personal Mixers are helping the audio staff at Sunset Christian Centre in Rocklin, CA, win the war against loud stage volume. The Aviom personal mixing system, along with an upgrade to the acoustics of the space, has helped Sunset Christian Centreadapt its sanctuary, originally designed for a traditional worship service comprised of a choir and piano, to a more contemporary form of worship.

Stage volume became a challenge when the loudness of monitor wedges and guitar amps began competing with the PA system. In addition, there was a constant struggle to make each performer comfortable with his monitor mix. What would make one musician happy would be wrong for the next one. The Aviom Personal Mixers, along with in-ear monitoring systems, have solved these challenges, allowing the musicians to customize their monitor mixes while also reducing the extra volume caused by
