The MP-5 moving head luminaire from SGM.
Italy / Germany - At last week's Prolight&Sound exhibition in Frankfurt, SGM unveiled the first fruits of the new R&D team headed by the former founder of Martin Professional, Peter Johansen. A total of seven new products were launched, all based on LED lighting technology. Johansen believes that the new products will revolutionise all fields of LED application - from fixed architectural to mobile concert touring.

In all its stylish new LED models, the company says cooling methods have been improved via rectangular heatsinks, set-up and address procedures improved with the aid of internal diagnostics, and control procedures implemented to ensure that lamps run flicker-free.

First up, the MP-5 is a full-colour moving LED wash light. In a notable change from its conventional round-can form, this IP65-rated fixture retains the same LED structure but adopts a more compact rectangular profile, making it tour friendly. Housed in a slim, black aluminium chassis, the low-profile MP5 is suited for both indoor and outdoor use. It features 44 each of the Luxeon Rebel Red, Green and Blue LEDs, offering CTC and White Balance control, with just 400W power consumption and a lamp life expectancy of 50,000 hours. It comes with an interchangeable Narrow, Medium and Wide lens kit and has 16-bit pan and tilt control. The fixture uses 7 or 12 DMX channels and set-up is via an OLED graphic 5-button display. A static version of this fixture is the P-5.

The company also launched the X-5 (white) and CX-5 (colour) strobes, using 3,000 and 1,200 Wellypower Optronics LEDs respectively - along with the ultra-stylish MP-5 rectangular full-colour moving LED wash light. Johansen drew particular attention to the strobes, commenting: "Compared with the market leaders in conventional strobes, we are delivering the same output from one fifth of the power."

He added: "Strobes have proved a problem for many tours - they are such high wattage that they need extra generators to power them. With our new LED's we can overdrive the LED 20 times without destroying it to produce different flash combinations."

Other innovations are the four-bank IP65-rated CC-4 Multiple LED Wash Light - each bank containing 44 each of the RGB LEDS - and the Q-7 wall washer, which also contains 1,200 Wellypower LEDs. Finally, the LED video ball system is a "unique LED video ball concept to create controllable wall patterns" the company says.

"We have achieved exactly what we set out to do - which is to create a new approach and direction for LED," stated Peter Johansen. "LED is perfect for theatre, TV studios, exhibitions and major concert touring - but some of the fixtures on the market are ugly and heavy; we have made them stylish and lightweight so that they can be used architecturally. At the same time, with products that are on rental our aim was to reduce the footprint - and our fixtures take up as little as 30% of direct competitors. We are also getting more light yield from the power we put in."

In addition to its new LED products, SGM also showed for the first time the G700 Spot, Wash and Beam with conventional Philips MSR Gold 700/2 MiniFastFit lamps.
