UK - Vortex Lighting Ltd was recently commissioned to provide the lighting for a Carols of Light concert in one of Britain's favourite buildings, Durham Cathedral. The aim of the concert was to raise funds for both the Durham Cathedral Music Endowment Fund and The Sunderland AFC Foundation. Lessons were read by HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO, Sir Tim Rice, The Rt Hon David Miliband MP, Kate Adie OBE, Steve Cram MBE and Channel 4's George Clarke while the concert included performances by Joe McElderry, Rick Wakeman, Alan Price, Barbara Dickson OBE, Sir Thomas Allen, Clare Teal and Kathryn Tickell.

Durham Cathedral is a very busy building, so the time available to rig and programme the equipment was somewhat limited, but Vortex's crew of just 4 installed all of the equipment, including the stage in just over three hours and removed in less than two hours, says the company.

All stage and lighting equipment installed by Vortex was from its own hire stock and included the following:

20 x Topdeck Cameo carpeted stage decks; 6 x Martin Mac Auras for the stage wash; 18 x Core Point 30 battery powered W-DMX LED up-lighters for the columns and Nave Aisles; 14 x GLP Impressions - up lighting for the Nave columns and roof; 4 x Studio Due StudioLED 600s for the rear of the stage and the roof above the choir to the rear of the stage; 1 x GrandMA 2 Lite console for control via a W-DMX system from Wireless Solutions and a dual universe 2.1 DMX hub from Luminex.

The power supply was limited to just 24 Amps (via 13A outlets) on both sides of the Nave, but the use of Vortex's high powered LED products allowed them to work within these limitations, obviating the need for external generating equipment.
