Denmark - Following "an overwhelmingly positive response" from both lighting designers and rental companies leading to the biggest pre-sale success ever in Martin's history, the MAC Viper is now on its way to rental houses around the world.

Martin CEO Christian Engsted comments, "We are ecstatic about the unprecedented feedback we have received on the Viper Profile. Never before in our history have we had such a success even before we started shipping. It is a testament to the success of our strategy to stay at the forefront of the industry. When we knew that this would be our last development of a new family of discharge-based moving heads, we decided to make it the best the industry has ever seen.

"This product seriously eclipses products above its class and redefines the standards for moving heads. It contains all of our accumulated knowledge over 25 yea

Canada - A Boston Pizza franchise owner broke away from the relaxed, family-style setting and created the first modernized restaurant in the chain. To set this location apart, a design team installed nearly 60 TVs, more than 50 speakers and 276 Iluminarc interior lighting solutions programmed with custom scenes.

Design Electronics based in Niagara Falls, contributed to more than 60 Boston Pizza installations. For this restaurant, which is located in the middle of Toronto's bustling entertainment district, Rob Jones, project manager for Design Electronics, and Darren Fousert, systems technician for Design Electronics, installed and programmed the lighting, audiovisual and system control components.

The team used a combination of Ilumipod Logic 6, Ilumipod Logic 12 and Ilumipod Logic Tri-4 interior lighting solutions to provide variable and controllable lighting in the dining ar

Ukraine - The Ukraina and Novy channels are two of the most watched television outlets in Ukraine. Last year, Ukraina launched a new HD-capable facility, complete with four television studios. At the same time, Novy also opened a new, expansive complex with two broadcast studios. Both networks have ambitious production schedules with multiple shows being filmed on each set every day, covering everything from news to sports shows.

To keep up with the demands of the fast-paced broadcast environment, they installed ETC lighting equipment.

In Ukraina's largest studio, the lighting staff rely on an ETC Ion control desk with a Universal Fader Wing. They had looked at other lighting desks, but decided on the Ion in order to future-proof their rig, as dynamic light becomes more prevalent in broadcast applications. They also liked the output count and the fact that the desk supports tw

Canada - An enduring relationship has been renewed, with SGM and its Canadian distributor SF Marketing signing a new contract which will see the Montreal-based company represent SGM's next generation of LED fixtures under the name 'SGM Canada'.

This will give the company much greater responsibility. But what makes the move significant is that SGM had been the first professional lighting brand that SF Marketing - originally established back in 1978 - brought into its portfolio almost a decade ago.

There is also an irony in that 20 years ago SGM's chief executive Peter Johansen came close to signing up his company at the time with SF Marketing president, Sol Fleising. How that decision might have impacted on the respective companies' fortunes we will never know - but two decades later the two industry giants are determined to grasp the opportunity this time around.

Olympic Countdown - The Musicians' Union has accused Olympic organisers LOCOG of breaking the terms of their agreement on performers' pay. The union claims that it has received reports from several musicians who have been asked to play at Olympic gigs for no fee and that it has forwarded these onto LOCOG.

Horace Trubridge, assistant general secretary of the MU, told The Stage, "We have been sending [LOCOG] examples all year of professional musicians who are being approached by LOCOG representatives to work for free . There seems to be a trawling exercise going on where LOCOG representatives are looking at band websites, listening to the music, thinking, 'I quite like that' and sending them an email to see if they will work for free. That seems to be what's happening, which is a complete breach of the agreement that we have with LOCOG."

However, this was his first year with responsibility for lighting a complete stage; working for suppliers Midnight Lighting, he produced the lighting plot for the Outpost tent, using large quantities of fast moving GLP LED heads to create the wow factor among the more conventional luminaires.

Promoted by Pipeline Productions, and held in the picturesque Mulberry Mountain, the festival featured five stages in all - including Outpost, a medium-sized tent with a self-climbing grid.

LD Philip Lindhfelt racked the Sharpys up at the rear of the stage and used them to beam directly onto the audience, which provided some spectacular, 1990s scanner-style, mid-air displays.

Playing to packed houses in arenas in the Norwegian cities of Stavanger, Bergen, Ă…lesund and the capital Oslo, We Love the 90s was a sell out event. Lindhfelt used the Sharpy before but never quite like this, as he explains: "I used them primarily as an effects fixture. Bands such as Scooter are quite progressive in terms of their music.
