China - Audio-Technica is supporting the host broadcaster of China’s most significant live sporting event this winter with ‘an exceptional number’ of microphones, headphones and associated accessories.
For some 26 years, Audio-Technica has been providing audio acquisition solutions to the biennial global broadcasts that cover multiple sporting disciplines across many different and varied venues, played out over two weeks of intense physical action.
Camera positions are often set up with Audio-Technica’s shotgun microphones, at Beijing there are over 700, with the majority being BP4027 and BP4029 stereo models in order to deliver an enhanced soundscape.

Italy - Loft01 in Prato is a former warehouse, newly converted into a lounge, restaurant and cocktail club in the heart of the Italian city of Prato. With a capacity of 90 (seated), it can be hired out for any type of event, from birthdays, weddings, art exhibitions and dance parties, customised to suit. In addition, clients benefit from a full technical infrastructure, including a Martin Audio Wavefront Precision Mini (WPM) PA, installed by dealers CLS Service.
This is used for special events like the opening night party, where more SPL was required. Well known DJ / producer Nicola Zucchi was at full tilt playing through WPM - stacked, four elements per side - above a pair of SX218 subs, run in two-box resolution from Martin Audio’s iKON amplifiers. In addition, an LE100 wedge monitor provided his reference sound.

UK - Shure has announced that The Thursford Christmas Spectacular upgraded to the Axient Digital Wireless system for its run of 2021 shows.
The Thursford Christmas Spectacular is a fast-moving celebration of the festive season, featuring a mix of both seasonal and year-round favourites. With a cast of over 130 members, consisting of a 30-piece orchestra, a 60-piece choir, 24 dancers, a comedian and speciality acts from all over the world, all performing to 1400 audience members on a stage that’s 140ft wide, it is one of the biggest shows of its kind in Europe. Musically, the show consists of a variety of performances ranging from classical choral arrangements to Christmas rock ‘n’ roll!

Europe - A number of rental companies across Europe are streamlining their hire fleets for the coming touring and outdoor seasons by acquiring Optocore’s Festival Boxes. These are available in Grand (12 SFP) and Petit (6 SFP) fibre transport platforms in order to convert and send multiple signal formats down a single fibre.
One leading international hire company, Major Tom, first saw the device at the ISE Show in Amsterdam, and after being given a system to demo they knew right away that this would become an essential tool in their inventory. “Why run six cables when you only need to run two,” reasons Major Tom project manager, Andy Banks. “It makes total sense even on non-festival shows; we can run PA returns on AVB, and then multiple consoles for headline and opening acts on just a single snake with a pair of fibres, rather than multiple runs.”

UK - “Absolutely amazing” is how lighting designer Tom Campbell from creative collective MIRRAD describes working with singer-songwriter and poet Arlo Parks (Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho). Her 2021 debut album Collapsed in Sunbeams, produced during the pandemic lockdowns, won last year’s Hyundai Mercury Music Prize for Best Album and she also collected a Brit Award for Breakthrough Artist.
Tom started working with the artist mid-2021. USA - Tonmeister and University of Saint Francis music technology director Miles Fulwider was recently tasked with recording a series of performances of more than 500 student violinists at the Suzuki Association of Utah (SAU).
The event, dubbed ‘Violin Celebration’, was held at Abravanel Hall, home of the Utah Symphony, and featured guest artist Rob Landes. The concert was edited into 19 videos that were streamed weekly as an immersive audio experience to Landes’ 3.62m YouTube subscribers, as well as those on the SAU page.

Israel - When tech giant Rapyd, which provides an API-based fintech-as-a-service, hosted a company rooftop party in Tel Aviv, LEAD selected an array of Claypaky fixtures to pull off one of the most innovative show concepts of the year.
Tel Aviv-based lighting and stage designers Omer Israeli and Dor Aichner, who are known as LEAD, utilised Claypaky Sharpy Beams, Mythos II and Scenius Unico fixtures for the event, which kicked off on the roof of Azrieli towers and concluded at Expo Tel Aviv. The fixtures were supplied and installed by Sincopa 2002.
Headlined by international DJs Tiesto, Martin Garrix, Armin Van Buuren, Nervo, Skazi and Infected Mushrooms, The Moment party celebrated Rapyd’s employees and the progress the start-up has made this year, including doubling its valuation to $2.5bn.

India - Christie laser projectors deployed for a spectacular projection-mapping showcase on the Secretariat Building in India’s capital, Delhi, have elevated the scale and solemnity of the annual Beating Retreat ceremony to new heights.

The captivating visuals, specially designed to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence, complemented the grand ceremony at Vijay Chowk, which included military bands, pipes and drum bands, buglers and trumpeters from India’s armed forces. Held annually on 29 January, the Beating Retreat ceremony is a centuries-old military tradition dating from the days when troops disengaged from battle at sunset. In India, the elaborate military ceremony is conducted to mark the formal conclusion of Republic Day celebrations.

Mexico - The Day Zero Festival marked its 10th year in style with Funktion-One sound systems - from distributor and rental partner Loto Audio - on all three stages. The festival, which is the brainchild of organisers Damian Lazarus and Crosstown Rebels, is renowned for its melting pot of music, mysticism and natural wonder.
Born on the final day of the Ancient Mayan Calendar in 2012, the one-day spectacular takes place in the Mayan jungle surrounding Tulum on Mexico’s Caribbean coastline. For coordinator and professor of audio engineering, Dr. Ian Corbett, it was an easy decision. “Teaching signal flow on the ASP8024 has always been easy, so why change a good thing?
“We had used the classic for over 10 years and it survived hard student use and a building move so well. Less than one minor repair every five years - that’s a great track record compared to some other products we’ve had.”

USA - Dodd Technologies, a full-service live events production company in Pendleton, Indiana, near Indianapolis, had a busy start to the year thanks to the College Football Playoff national championship game, which took place at Indianapolis’s Lucas Oil Stadium on 10 January. Dodd worked on several projects associated with the game including a remarkable high-rise ballet lit using Elation’s 50,000-lumen Proteus Maximus.

USA - The fact that The Rolling Stones went on tour last year is nothing short of a miracle. Not only was the tour postponed from the summer of 2020, but the band’s drummer, Charlie Watts passed away in August. Nonetheless, The Stones went ahead with the tour, paying tribute to Charlie throughout.
Front of house mixer Dave Natale had worked with The Stones many times before and joined them again for the 2021 No Filter Tour. Spain - Showtec stage and effect lighting fixtures were used on Canal Sur where three couples compete against each other in a refurbished Lingo studio.
Recently, the first episode of a new Lingo season was broadcast on CanalSur. It is a battle of words between three couples with the aim of raising as much money as possible. The game consists of three rounds and a final lap in which the candidates try to guess as many words as possible. The winning couple eventually takes home the money they have gained during the game.
The Lingo episodes are recorded by Loasur Studios. Unicorn and Galdo Media were also involved as co-producers. They have almost completely furnished the studio with Showtec products. Romania - The 2/3 galeria is a space dedicated to contemporary art with an emphasis on photography, located in Bucharest. The building that houses the art exhibitions was built in 1895 by the architect Wilhelm Bast. After undergoing many transformations, the gallery's founder decided to preserve its historic character by keeping the 19th century exposed brick arches and the natural marble added in the 1970s. The new art gallery was inaugurated in June 2021 and it is characterised by a timeless feeling, combining the historical charm of the Bucharest's Old Town with the novelty of contemporary art.
The art gallery aims to feature new artists with a distinctive perspective on the world. The name of the gallery was inspired by the 35mm frame format seen on compact cameras, another tribute to the importance of history in contemporary art.

Mexico - Daring acrobatic performers are as much a part of a circus as jugglers and clowns. This is especially true at Gran Circo Bardu, which, having no animals in its rink, relies heavily on the feats of physical dexterity by its acrobats to thrill audiences.
These nimble artists aren’t the only ones performing delicate balancing acts at Gran Circo Bardu. As a lighting designer at the popular circus, Abraham De La Curz Merida must also walk a tight rope of sorts. With no backdrop or scenery inside the circular rink, he has to create texture with lighting alone; but at the same time, he must also be very careful not to distract the performers as they go through their carefully choreographed routines.

Canada - Laval, Québec-based Creative Lab, which creates lighting and visual installations of all kinds, has invested in 24 Ayrton Mistral-TC LED spot moving lights. The new fixtures have already been put to work on the Montreal Canadiens’ Samedis FANatiques (FANatic Saturdays) pre-game show and on a glitzy auto dealership event.
“The Mistrals are our first Ayrton fixtures but certainly not our last,” declares Francis Aubin, president and founder of Creative Lab. “They are also our first moving light purchase. We decided to go with Mistral because the fixtures are well known in the industry by lighting professionals. Mistral is compact, versatile and powerful – the ideal first moving light to add to our inventory and bring more creativity to our design.”

USA - Eric Church set out on The Gather Again Tour this fall with the intention to unite fans and celebrate the return of live music, promoting his most recent Heart & Soul albums. Church is fuelled by the energy he receives from the audience and his interactions with them. Now, he doesn’t have to worry about being at certain mic positions for certain moments. With the format of The Gather Again Tour, special moments can be created anywhere on stage at any time during the show, thanks to BlackTrax.
While The Gather Again tour shows take place in arena-sized venues, the stage is set up in an intimate, in-the-round style where the audience surrounds the performer from all sides. It’s a setup that needed a brand-new stage from the ones that Eric’s used to performing on for prior tours.

Belgium - Production values were ramped up by the organisers of the two-day Rave Rebels XXL extravaganza, staged at Palais 12 in Brussels, celebrating a return to live events for this high energy phenomenon that included production design with lighting and set by Thomas Boets with 200 x Robe Pointe moving lights at its epicentre.
The show design brief from the two organisers, Jens Grieten and Nick Ramoudt, who also run the renowned Kompass Klub underground techno venue in Ghent, was to keep it “industrial” - raw, stark, high tech and with a massive impact on 30,000 techno fans over the two nights.

South Africa - Global restaurant chain Nando’s is keen to celebrate its Southern African origins. To this end, Nando’s has commissioned local art from the outset to decorate its restaurants; consequently, the chain now possesses the largest privately owned collection of contemporary Southern African art in the world.
Recently, Nando’s inaugurated one of its latest restaurants, located in the Mall of Africa, Johannesburg. Much like the collection of art, the cultural resonance of audio is also an important touchpoint for the brand. In fact, Nando’s run an entire radio station across all their restaurants that delivers a carefully curated Afro-Luso playlist.
