USA - Harman Professional has announced the appointment of Mark Ureda as vice president and general manager of the Harman Professional Loudspeaker Group, comprising JBL Professional and Selenium. Effective immediately, Ureda takes over from John Carpanini, who led JBL Professional and was promoted to a new position in Harman's automotive division.

Switzerland - The opera house in Zurich has installed a new communications system from Riedel Communications. Riedel delivered a flexible system combining Artist digital matrix intercom and Performer partyline technology.

At the heart of the installation at the opera house is a Riedel Artist 64 digital matrix intercom system. Due to its redundant power supplies and CPUs the installation provides maximum system stability. A total of 11 Artist 1000 control panels are used.

Germany - With the completion of Lawo's new production facilities, consoles from Innovason, the French manufacturer of digital live systems, will be assembled at the Lawo factory from July 2010. Relocating the final assembly of Eclipse consoles to Rastatt, Germany, is Innovason's response to the growing demand for its latest console, says the company.

According to Innovason's product manager and customer service director, Hervé de Caro, the move offers significant benefits to Innovason customers. "With the increased demand for Eclipse, we had reached the limits of our manufacturing capabilities at our own premises in Plougoumelen. The move to Rastatt will significantly increase both the speed and efficiency of the production process. USA - Audio-Technica has announced the appointment of Mark Donovan to the newly created position of sales engineer - installed sound, reflecting the company's continuing dedication to the installed sound market sector. The announcement was made by Audio-Technica US vice president of sales Marc Lee Shannon.

In his new position, Donovan will work closely with Shannon and the rest of the sales team, serving as Audio-Technica's primary technical resource for installed sound contractors, consultants and architects.

"On behalf of the Audio-Technica sales department, I welcome Mark to the team," stated Shannon. "Mark has a true passion for audio and a wealth of experience, and we look forward to working with him to continue to penetrate the installed sound market sector. Italy - Link has announced the first multi-protocol digital snake system to implement Dante into their DGlink Stage Box system. Audinate's Dante solution provides a self-configuring, plug-and-play digital audio network that uses standard Internet protocols. Dante is a scalable solution that works on both 100Mbits and 1Gigabit Ethernet and coupled with Link's unique hybrid approach, "offers the end user a distribution system that will improve audio quality and simplify setup," says the company.

USA - The largest Optocore single ring network ever installed is currently in use in the Cirque du Soleil's Viva ELVIS production at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Optocore's president, Marc Brunke, and North American director, Bill Coons, originally demonstrated the Optocore system to Cirque du Soleil sound designer Jonathan Deans and Matthew Ezold, Auerbach Pollock Friedlander's audio video systems consultant for Viva ELVIS. Based on feedback given during the demonstration, Optocore accelerated development of a server-based topology allowing simultaneous control from multiple client operators. As a result, "Optocore's flexibility and control options allowed us to consolidate multiple primary and backup switching matrices into a single routing engine," said Ezold

UK - Network Rail, which runs, develops and maintains rail tracks, signaling and other infrastructure such as tunnels and bridges - together with18 of the country's biggest and busiest stations - has chosen fire telephones and induction loop systems produced by Current Thinking for inclusion in its St Pancras Thameslink Box project.

Many rail stations on the East Coast Main line are already equipped with fire telephones and induction loop systems produced at Current Thinking's Sunderland factory and managing director Tony Smith says Network Rail's (PADS) endorsement follows installation of its products at St Pancras International, as well as Stratford, Ebsfleet and Ashford International stations.

UK - If you are an acoustic consultant, facilities manager, architect or anyone involved in the manufacture, specification or installation of voice alarm systems, you will have heard of EN54 part 16, the new European standard covering voice alarm systems, including control and indicating equipment (VACIE), along with amplifiers, processors and similar hardware, and EN54 Part 24, which covers loudspeakers.

Its introduction is causing headaches - and considerable expense - for the UK and European manufacturing sector. The UK is one of only three of the EU's 27 member states where EN54 is yet to become law, but that will change in April 2011.

The complexity of the EN54 regulations, and the demands it places on manufacturers for testing, are onerous, especially in systems incorporating equipment from different manufacturers.

The situation is not improved by widespread uncertaint

Italy/Sweden - Mid-July saw health & lifestyle products company Herbalife hold four-day Extravaganzas in Italy and Sweden, with up to 13,000 delegates at each. Featuring high production values, Yamaha digital mixing consoles controlled the audio.

Staged as part of the company's lavish 30th anniversary world tour, the events took place in Turin's Palaisozaki Arena and the Stockholm Globe Arena. Each was a mixture of conference, training sessions, team meetings, awards presentations, live entertainment and high profile 'geeing-up' for the delegates, a highlight being the company's own version of Pop Idol. UK - As the central mosque in Bolton, Zakariyya Jame Masjid plays an important role in uniting and serving all Muslims in the town. In addition to having space for up to 3,000 worshippers, it acts as a meeting place for many groups, agencies and local authorities involved in various issues in the borough, and provides Islamic education for children and adults from the surrounding areas.

As speech is of pivotal importance during prayer sessions, it was recently decided to find a way of enhancing speech quality and audibility in the prayer hall. At the same time it made sense to upgrade the audio control system to provide a simplified user interface.

India Harman Professional has announced the creation of three new sales teams positions in India and the appointments of Kaushal Garg, Robin Ghose, and Vibhor Khanna to fill the roles. The new additions will serve as the national sales manager and the regional sales managers for North and West India, respectively, and will be directed by Harman Professional's senior director of sales for Asia, David McKinney.

Garg comes to Harman with 22 years of experience at Bhartia Cutler Hammer, a switchgear company, and most recently Bose India, where he was the head of the Professional Division for sales for the past 12 years. At Harman, he will work with his team to generate demand in India for Harman Professional products across all markets - including MI, broadcast/recording, cinema, tour-sound and more - using various sales, channel network and business development strategies.

Germany - A total of around 32,000 people attended the five sold-out concerts that comprised the 19th edition of the Classic Open Air event in Berlin from 15-19 July 2010. The first night was inaugurated by German TV personality, Herbert Feuerstein, who hosted a spectacular 'musical request' night complete with lights, lasers and fireworks.

The following evenings were filled with Verdi and Tchaikovsky performed by some of the biggest names in classical music, as well as a swing night. The event culminated with The big night of film music performed by Mousse T. and his band and the Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg. TSE AG of Berlin was once again responsible for the sound production, and this year they selected two Eclipse consoles from Innovason to handle FoH and monitoring duties.

Italy - QVC, the home-shopping channel broadcaster owned by Liberty Media Corp, will start a service in Italy for on-air launch at the beginning of October.

Experienced Berkshire-based broadcast integrators, TSL, won a competitive tender to design and install a highly sophisticated broadcast system, with audio mixing based around two Studer Vista 5 32-fader production consoles with SCore Live and D21 I/O extension frames installed in the two identically-configured live studio control rooms and central technical area.

UK - Save Our Sound UK has issued its reaction to the Ofcom statement on PSME funding:

As we know, the Government and Ofcom have decided to clear TV bands 31-37 and 61-69 of all wireless microphones and similar technologies that operate on these frequencies. At the end of July, Communications Minister Ed Vaizey announced that the Government would be making a "significant contribution" to the replacement cost, but only for equipment that tunes to channel 69. Following on from this, Ofcom published a statement providing details on the compensation package, including eligibility criteria. Save Our Sound UK has since had time to digest the content and consult with stakeholders.
