UK - Visitors to Sport Wales' Cardiff headquarters will be able to listen to sports commentaries without disturbing staff working nearby, thanks to the installation of innovative directional loudspeakers in the organisation's newly refurbished reception area.

The speakers are the first commercial product to be launched by the Ebbw Vale-based audio technology company ZonarSound and the Sport Wales installation is the first to be undertaken by the company.

Sport Wales, the organisation responsible for developing and promoting sporting activities in Wales, has adopted the technology to enable visitors to enjoy sports events - displayed on large screens in the waiting area - while others can work or use the telephone without distraction.

Based on technology pioneered by parent company Warwick Audio Technologies the speakers are flat and very thin, so they can be concealed within

USA - At the National WWII Museum in downtown New Orleans, the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Centre now relies on the Meyer Sound CAL column array loudspeaker to tackle the acoustic challenges in its massive vaulted pavilion. Using CAL's beam-steering technology, New Orleans-based JBA Consulting Engineers has created a system that delivers highly intelligible music and speech while tailoring coverage for the audience size at an event.

The US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Centre is a 36,000sq.ft angular edifice dominated by a five-story, steel-and-glass atrium which houses six wartime aircraft suspended in frozen flight, including a B-17 Flying Fortress. Despite the acoustical hazards posed by surfaces of glass and concrete, the CAL loudspeakers allow the museum to direct exceptional audio clarity to the audience for almost daily programmes of lectures, video screenings, and mus

USA - Celebrating a nearly 100-year history as a venue for live entertainment, the Varsity Theatre is a Minneapolis landmark. Originally built for vaudeville in 1915, the theatre featured a compact auditorium that inspired the nickname 'The Dinky' and later led to the surrounding neighbourhood - today a hive of restaurants, bars and venues on the north side of the University of Minnesota's East Bank campus - being dubbed 'Dinkytown'.

The venue was upgraded and expanded in the 1930s into a 900-seat Art Deco standout, which it remains today. In its present life the Varsity features stunning new interior lighting and architectural design details, and hosts an eclectic variety of events, including national touring acts (KT Tunstall, The Fray, Goo Goo Dolls, Imogen Heap, Suzanne Vega, etc.), local music, live theatre and special events such as weddings, fundraisers and corporate even

Spain / Japan - 2013 marks 400 years since the first official diplomatic relations were established between Spain and Japan. To celebrate, both countries are staging a number of events over the coming year. The first of these was an inaugural gala, held in Madrid on 11 June, where Yamaha digital mixers were a highly appropriate choice.

The Embassy Keicho was an official Japanese delegation which stopped in a number of European countries between 1613 and 1620. An important landmark in Hispano-Nippon relations, the quadricentennial celebrations include a range of cultural, political, economic and technical exchange events taking place in different parts of Japan and Spain.

Featuring Yamaha CL5 and CL1 digital mixing consoles, together with two R-series i/o units, the inaugural gala was performed in the presence of His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan and Their Ro

USA - Recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's largest music festival for the past 15 consecutive years, Milwaukee's Summerfest knows how to throw a party. With over 700 national and regional acts performing on 11 stages - this year's 'Big Gig' at Henry W. Maier Festival Park on the city's Lake Michigan shoreline drew more than 840,000 visitors over its 11-day run in late June and early July.

To handle audio production duties for this year's 46th annual bash, Milwaukee World Festival, the non-profit organisation that runs the event, once again turned to local provider Clearwing Productions, which specified the use of more than 340 L-Acoustics loudspeaker enclosures for FOH throughout the grounds.

According to Bryan Baumgardner, Clearwing audio operations/logistics manager, eight of Summerfest's nine largest stages - including the 25,000-capacity Marcus Amphitheater

UK - Orbital Sound has announced the appointment of Adam Thorneycroft to the newly-created position of operations director.

Thorneycroft joins the existing four-man board with immediate effect, working alongside Chris Headlam, managing director; Eric Simpson, event and comms director; Bill Addison, technical director; and Tom Byrne, sales director. His primary role is to oversee all operational aspects and processes of Orbital's rental business, across warehousing, engineering and logistics.

He is also closely involved with Orbital's apprenticeship scheme.

UK - Production manager Kevin Hopgood has been working with Mark Knopfler since 2006 and has developed a strong relationship with Paul Crockford, Knopfler's manager and his team. With Hopgood's recent move to SW19, it was a logical step for the newly formed production company to take on the logistics of Knopfler's current tour.

"Most people on the tour, including Paul's team of Lauren Sass and Bree Ishikawa have been working with Mark for many years; they're great people to work with and Mark has such a good work ethic," says Hopgood. "We're doing 71 shows over four months during this tour, which started in mid April and will finish at the end of July, with around five or six shows a week, most of which are back to backs. We do a residency at the RAH for six days, which normally falls in the middle of the run."

Bulgaria - Clubbers in the Bulgarian city of Razgrad have been treated to a new kind of experience which is one of a kind.

The innovative Soho Club bears an exclusive interior design, conceived by the renowned professional design team from Goev Studio. In complete synchrony with the complex concept of the club is the music, which is soft during daytime, and challenging and edgy after dark as the venue metamorphoses from coffee and food bar into a full-on night club.

Forming the bond in this unconventional combination is the sound quality of Martin Audio's premium architectural AQ system, with the atmosphere further enhanced by the impressive lighting as Soho stages a tight schedule of events.

This programme itself varies depending on the climate. For example, as the weather grows warmer, Soho offers a summer garden (and children's corner for the club's youngest visitors). Fo

UK - The golden era of Disco, which started in 1970s Manhattan, has now been recaptured by Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling (of Inception Group) in a Soho basement. Renowned for their innovative concepts, Disco is a revival of this important nightlife idiom and features choreographed routines from singers and dancers, as well as nightly live performances from musicians.

Helping to bring this heavily themed venue to life with some inspired LED and discharge lighting that recreates the zeitgeist is the Sound Division Group. Said their MD, David Graham, "LED wasn't even around back in the '70s but the way in which we have mixed it with beam and flower FX represents the idiom sympathetically."

Design wise, Disco showcases a cool and quirky interior, featuring entire walls of retro televisions beaming out music videos and a nostalgic collection of iconic images of revel

Australia - Coda Audio Services recently traded up from their Shure PSM 600 to Shure PSM 1000 personal monitor systems (10 transmitting devices and 14 receivers), a move described by managing director Michael Wilkie as more than advantageous.

"We went from a non-flexible frequency situation to one where you can switch everything around and select whatever frequency you want," he added. "The diversity system is very good and means you're much less likely to get drop outs on stage. The PSM 600's had that HA and HB etc so it was complicated from an inventory point of view - you could accidently send out the wrong transmitter for the receiver - whereas now everything is the same so you're just hiring out a system."

The ability to do point to point wireless signal linking set up was a major drawcard for Wilkie as Coda do many outdoor festivals.

UK - The reactivated Radiophonic Workshop (RWS) has enlisted Behringer's X32 Digital Mixing Console and Eurolive Active loudspeakers for a series of upcoming high-profile electronic music events.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of BBC Television's Doctor Who - an institution that the Radiophonic Workshop's extraordinary music helped propel into the consciousness of the British public. To celebrate both the return of RWS and the anniversary of Doctor Who, the RWS joined a 200-strong cast of musicians for the BBC Doctor Who Proms at London's Royal Albert Hall in July. The concert, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, will also be shown on BBC television in November as part of the Doctor Who anniversary celebrations.

The RWS will also be curating and headlining a mini-festival celebrating the Workshop's legacy and their return to the stage at the London Roundhouse in

USA - Austin's Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is America's first purpose-built Formula One racing track. Completed in late 2012, COTA's campus includes the main grandstand with VIP lounge, the Grand Plaza with food court and shops, a 251ft (77m) observation tower and the pit building with an adjacent media centre. The track includes bleachers at several locations to supplement the grandstand seating.

Although the Formula One and other races are the site's main attractions, A/V systems play major supporting roles. Architect Tilke's Formula One designs include race control systems and basic audio and video systems but Circuit of the Americas chose to upgrade and/or supplement the A/V systems in many areas.

Circuit of the Americas retained consultant Acoustic Dimensions for many of the venue's networks and for the audio and video system upgrades. Acoustic Dimensions value enginee

Lebanon - Martin Audio has changed distributor in Lebanon, appointing Beirut-based Technosound with effect from 1 July.

Founded in 1969, and with a large portfolio of sole agencies in the high end pro audio sector, the company made its first approach to the British loudspeaker manufacturer at the ISE 2012 show in Amsterdam.

According to Technosound director of sales and marketing, Pierre Fahed, the company will be focusing on all core markets - from high end concert touring systems through to discreet boutique installation speakers.

Belgium - Audio rental house Studio Haifax is the first Belgium company to take delivery of a Coda Audio ViRAY system. Purchased from Coda's Belgium distributor Apex Audio, the company has made this significant investment, says Studio Haifax Audio/System and Studio Engineer Yves Van Moerbeke, "because it sounds incredibly real".

Established over a decade ago, Studio Haifax has experienced a period of rapid growth over the last few years. "This has everything to do with the professionalism that every single one of Haifax's technicians brings to the job every single day," says Yves. "But with good intentions only, you don't perform a single show."

After the success of Belgium rock band Zornik's Less > More theatre tour, for which Studio Haifax supplied a Coda Airline LA8 system, the company became better known within the Belgian live entertai

UK - Capital Sound Hire packed up its Nexo STM system in late June and headed down to Cornwall for the Eden Sessions, a series of outdoor concerts held in the beautiful grounds of the Eden Project. During the course of two weeks, artists including the Kaiser Chiefs, Tom Tom Club, Sigur Ros, Daughter, Willy Mason, the xx, Chic featuring Nile Rogers, Jessie J and A*M*E*, were part of what's been described in the UK press as "The most sublime summer music festival you could ever hope to experience," and "Magical... half Glastonbury, half Glyndebourne."

Capital configured the STM system in L/R arrays of 12x M46 Main cabinets and 12x B112 Bass units, with the M46s on the outside of the hangs, and 8x S118 Subs ground stacked per side. The main hang configuration remained the same for the duration of the event. "We thought this was the best option as the covera

USA - Students rooting for the home team at Excelsior Springs High School in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, can now enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear sound as they take in football games and other events at their school's outdoor stadium. As part of a long-overdue audio upgrade, the school has installed two Technomad PowerChiton 500 modules at the stadium to drive its loudspeakers, significantly improving sound quality.

Kansas City, Missouri-based systems integrator Harvest Productions, which performed the upgrade, housed the new PowerChiton modules inside the stadium's scoreboard. The compact PowerChiton design enabled the unusual installation, ensuring they are not visible to spectators. The PowerChiton amplifiers now deliver 1100 watts at four ohms, with excellent sound quality across the stadium.

The weatherproof design also ensures better outdoor protection than the school's pre

Switzerland - Reggaeton pioneer Daddy Yankee recently gave a well-received performance in Lausanne, his signature sound backed by D.A.S. Aero Series 2 professional sound systems. The concert was part of the I Love Reggaeton Festival held at Lausanne's Malley indoor arena, where over 6,000 fans converged to revel in the sounds of some of the biggest acts in the industry. The Puerto Rican artist headlined the festival, sharing the stage with a variety of world-renowned names in reggaeton like Prince Royce, Papa London and Rodri-go.

After weighing a number options event promoter Pro Sound & Light, with Paulo Martins at the helm, decided to roll out D.A.S. Aero Series 2 systems for the Daddy Yankee concert.

Led by sound technician Ricardo Peláez, the Pro Sound & Light team deployed 16 large-format D.A.S. Aero 50 line arrays for the main system in a typical left-right set-u

UK - An integrated JBL / BSS Soundweb audio solution has been deployed by Sound Division Group - in London's most iconic building.

On the 31st and 33rd floors of the spectacular Shard, the tallest building in Western Europe, David Yeo, founder of Aqua Restaurant Group, has opened two diverse restaurants - aqua shard (31st floor) and Hutong (33rd floor). Situated halfway up the building, they offer panoramic views over the London skyline.

Having earlier worked at Aqua London in Regent Street, David Graham's AV integration company was awarded the contract to provide sound reinforcement and control at the new venues - along with a full CCTV package. They have designed elaborate background music systems, with facility for a punchier system at the 31st floor atrium bar, while Soundweb London devices, located in the central comms room on the 31st floor, distribute feeds over an exte

UK - Folkfest is London's only folk festival and centres around The Bedford in Balham, one of the city's premiere music venues. It is the brainchild of the venue's promoter, Tony Moore, who drew inspiration from a trip to Tennessee's Folk Alliance convention back in 2009.

"Folk Alliance takes place in one hotel in Memphis, which is booked out just for the music; after 10pm, every room becomes a showcase, and over three floors, all the rooms are buzzing with live music," Moore explains. "It's an amazing adrenaline-fuelled event, and because what the US regard as folk music is a lot broader than how we traditionally define the genre in the UK, I realised that over the last 10 years, The Bedford has actually been very 'folk' under those terms: we've always encouraged organic performance; we don't like playback; and we have a number of bluegrass, Americana, and singer
