UK - Specialist video production from a Sheffield company provided the city's most successful firms with the best possible image at a prestigious business awards ceremony. Winning companies at the 2007 Sheffield Business Awards went big thanks to a giant 20m x 6m screen created by audio visual and live event specialist tdc.

For the first time in the event's history, tdc shot footage for each of the 13 award category nominees in high definition, and edited using Blue Screen overlay techniques.

Eamonn Hunt, director at tdc, which has supported the Business Awards for the last three years, said: "It is a specialist process which involves shooting two events at two different times and locations, and editing them together. The result is an impressive production placing people in locations that they may not otherwise be able to access in real life."

UK - Following its £1.3 million revamp the Wyvern Theatre Swindon is opening its doors on 4 February 2008 for a special Venue Technology Day. Coordinated by Stage Electrics the day promises the opportunity to explore some of the latest in venue technology in an operational setting.

On 25 September 2007 the Wyvern, a busy receiving venue, reopened after nearly a year in the dark following the discovery of asbestos in the auditorium roof (see Lighting&Sound International magazine November 2007). Stage Electrics was contracted by Swindon Borough Council to design, install and supply technical infrastructure and equipment to the venue.

The Wyvern Theatre is a truly multifunctional venue hosting everything from Shakespeare to ballet, live music to comedy and conferences to cinema. With a reasonably small team of staf

UK - The Kaiser Chiefs wanted something completely different video-wise for the latest arena leg of their tour, so set and lighting designer Richard Larkum came up with the idea of having five portrait screens crowning the top edge of the stage.

XL Video was asked to supply kit and crew. The project was handled for them by Jo Beirne and Phil Mercer, who also initially suggested they use Jon Shrimpton to direct the show's camera mix.

Other key decisions made on the video front included not to have any onstage content and not to have any side stage IMAG screens. "We didn't want anything at all that would physically distract or divert attention from the band," explains Larkum, adding that to keep everyone's eyes focused towards the stage, the top mounted screens seemed the ideal solution.

To encourage the flow of communication between lighting and video, Larkum insist

UK - Large-format projection specialists ETC London is supplying 18 Christie S20 Roadster projectors to Belgian superstars Clouseau for their 18-night run at the 15,000 capacity Antwerp Sportpalais.

ETC London was brought into the mix by set and visuals designer Bart Clement, who is working for the band for the first time. Clement is known for being inventive and original when it comes to defining stage environments, and this one was no exception. He created a giant 17m high by 30 wide curved wave-like back wall and projection surface from nearly 400 aluminium cubes covered in white Polystretch fabric.

Clouseau's main cube projection surface was made by WiCreations, and is fed by 12 of ETC's Christies, configured as two flown stacks of three focussed on the centre of the screen, with two more either side of stage on the deck, mounted in short towers. Two additional stacks of t

As in previous years ETC was appointed by event producers Jack Morton Worldwide.

The spectacular, which included the projections, was organised by the Mayor of London in conjunction with Visit London. The images were part of a pyrotechnic, lighting and visual extravaganza designed to capture the spirit and inclusiveness of 2008 the Olympic year, and also looking forward to London's own hosting of the 2012 Olympic Games.

The New Year event took place along the Thames, encompassing the South Bank between Jubilee and Westminster Bridges, including iconic landmarks like the London Eye and Big Ben. An estimated 700,000 people went to central

The account is project managed for XL by Des Fallon, who says: "Ivan has pulled together a great team again, it's always a pleasure to work on one of his tours, working with Paul, Phil and Judy is cool, we all clicked from the off."

The cameras were all mini cams, dotted about the stage in odd and apparently random places. Four of them were Sony robotic fixtures with a series of preset positions, operated live by engineer Gerard Corey during the show.

All the cameras were fed to a pair of 14 10ft projection screens either side

UK - PSL's new Christie Roadster S+20K DLP projectors were deployed on a remarkable multimedia event in the city of Bristol. With its festively themed large-scale video projections, Light Up Bristol ran for five consecutive nights just before Christmas.

This is the second year for the event, but it has grown exponentially, and now uses the listed buildings of the Council House as the backdrop for 400ft (122m) scenic projections of animation and moving images. The event has been put together by Bristol Media, the city's creative networking and support organisation, and the West of England Design Forum, who invited a team of 14 of the city's leading creatives from companies including Aardman Animations, E3, Beef, Oakwood DC, Thirteen and MCcann Erickson to work alongside each other on the project.

UK - For one of its biggest projects in recent years, PSL sent a 75-man team to the opening ceremony which kicked off Liverpool's year as European City of Culture. From the imposing 40' screens that dominated St George's Plateau to the 15-camera broadcast truck that relayed Liverpool's celebrations around the world, PSL technicians were at the heart of the logistically complex event.

Led by Pod Bluman, the PSL team had to triumph against the twin enemies of time and the elements. PSL's participation in the Liverpool show was confirmed only three weeks ahead of the event, just one week before the Christmas slow-down.

"The concept of the show was to tell the story of Liverpool's history and culture," explains Pod Bluman. "Its location was the open space between the city's great civic buildings, using St George's Hall as the backdrop to the stage, and in some respe

The Sheffield-based company illuminated the new City of Peace sculpture to celebrate its permanent installation on the chimney of St. Paul's Chambers, on St Paul's Parade, next to the Peace Gardens.

tdc used high power lights on the stainless steel art piece, which features seven life-size doves perched on the chimney. It was designed by Sheffield's internationally renowned artist Richard Bartle and inspired by Pablo Picasso's visit to the Second World Peace Congress held in the city in 1950.

UK - Continuing a long-standing working relationship with JVC, Quadrant Security Group has installed a large number of the manufacturer's LCD monitors in a new CCTV control room for Huntingdonshire District Council. Some 37 JVC LCD TFT screens have been used in total, in a newly built and designed facility that monitors 120 cameras across the busy Cambridgeshire town and beyond.

Huntingdonshire Council wanted to move its entire CCTV monitoring operation into a new purpose built building - a process that had to be completed while the existing security system remained operational at the existing site. Quadrant installed a fully digitised recording system along with operator and supervisor consoles, and arranged 32 of JVC's GD-19L1G 19" TFT screens into a monitor wall.

These are configured to show quad displays or any single camera. In the same facility, Quadrant installed 5

The imaginative design - which takes in the high footfall stairwell and ascending escalator - was created by Handy AV's managing director Aubrey Wright, working closely with the client and their in-store designers.

The brief was to show advanced mobility; Handy AV's solution has been to fire images along six seamless plasma screens, following the line of the diagonal escalator up to the first floor, and to provide a further portrait column of eight plasma screens, wh
