UK - Take That's The Circus Live - Summer 2009 tour exceeded everyone's expectations. With concerts throughout the UK and held in the largest stadiums, over 1,000,000 tickets were sold for the flamboyantly themed extravaganzas, based on Take That's latest album 'The Circus'.

With the stage set as the Big Top, a ringmaster welcomed the audience to the show, which included jugglers, unicyclers, clowns and trapeze artists alongside the ultimate showmanship of the boy band themselves.

Creative Technology has been involved in all three tours since Take That reformed, which enables CT to provide the production with experience and knowledge allowing for smooth transit and seamless rig and de rig for each of the stadium stints. Utilising a Barco MiTrix screen for the back screen and two IMAG panels for each side, CT once again worked alongside XL Video who provided the central

UK - In a new initiative announced by PLASA Events Ltd, this year's PLASA Show (13-16 September, Earls Court, London) will include a new focus on developing business opportunities for the industry's service providers and consultants.

PLASA Connect, an idea developed in conjunction with RH Consulting and sponsored by L&SI magazine, will provide service-based operators - including consultants, installers and rental companies - with an opportunity to find new potential clients from a wide range of vertical markets.

People involved in large projects in many different walks of life often have very little idea of who to go to for the supply of sound and lighting equipment. The idea behind PLASA Connect is to help those people gain information and make an informed choice. The result will be a targeted business development opportunity which will bring genuine business benefits to all

UK - July 2009 sees the release of Hippotizer software version 3.0.13 for public use. The release heralds several new features including new HD-SDI and DVI options, colour correction and support for Matrox's Dual and Triple Head To Go output extenders. Other new components include a Cue Controller and the ability to flag media.

"This release is a milestone for us because the features within provide solutions to issues we see time and time again in current media server applications," says Nigel Sadler, head of Green Hippo's special projects division.

The new HD-SDI card option bypasses the traditional drivers, allowing Hippotizer software access to the card functionality directly. "We sent one of our key developers into the manufacturer resulting in a relationship which we feel is unique in the media server field," says Sadler. "We believe our research

UK - Automation experts Kinesys designed and supplied the bespoke motion control system that moves and shapes the 'transforming' video screen for U2's 360° world tour.

The system consists of 40 Kinesys Evo zero-speed chain hoists and eight custom built winches, all controlled by their K2 3D software control package.

Kinesys' Dave Weatherhead comments: "This was the heaviest, most complex and interconnected system we have undertaken to date, with 48 motors following unique motion profiles to allow the deployment of over 52 tonnes of video screen."

The screen was originally conceived by Willie Williams and Mark Fisher, long term creative collaborators on U2 shows. New York based designers/architects Hoberman Associates assisted Innovative Designs in engineering and realising the revolutionary centrepiece for the show, which consists of 888 individual hexag

South Africa - Gearhouse South Africa supplied lighting, sound and video production plus crew for singer/songwriter R Kelly's first visit to South Africa.

The five days of production rehearsals at Sun City Superbowl was followed by one show there and another at Cape Town's Grand West Casino. The project was managed for Gearhouse by Michael Lewis, and their teams worked very closely with R Kelly's lighting designer Nook Schoenfeld and FOH sound engineer Rob 'Cubby' Colby.

Llewellyn Reinecke, Gearhouse Audio's systems engineer also looked after FOH. Colby specified a V-Dosc system, which was flown in Sun City as 12 elements a side for the main left and right hangs, complete with three dv-Doscs underneath for front down-fills. He also specified a 1:1 ratio for subs and V-Dosc, so the 24 subs were ground stacked three high and four wide on the floor of the Superbowl. Additional ha

Images were provided from a live camera feed supplied by XL Video.

At Glastonbury, two 23.2m2 R7 screens, mounted back-to-bac

A full-service lighting, audio and video production and rental company, PCE had purchased 48 of the Elation panels, which are modular in design and can be used to create vibrant video pixel screens, curtains and backdrops. UK - Reliability is a word Green Hippo like. It isn't a word used quite so often in relation to the British weather! So when Green Hippo's Nigel Sadler visited the setup at Channel 4's T4 On The Beach event in July of this year, he encountered 4 seasons in one day!

The live TV show caters for the current pop market and had an impressive line-up of chart-topping artists including Basement Jaxx, Florence and The Machine, Tinchy Strider, Calvin Harris and Dizzy Rascal and not surprisingly takes place on the beach at Weston Super-Mare on England's west coast. Although live transmission began at midday, there were many other acts running prior to this time to warm up the huge crowds.

As has been the case for several years now, all stage media was handled by Green Hippo's oldest friends Digital Insanity. Richard 'RB' Bagshaw and Kate Perring were already knee deep in media when Nige

UK - Catalyst distributor SNP Productions has supplied three top spec Catalyst v4 PRO media servers in custom SNP designed Catalyst system flightcases to the Mariinsky Theatre from St Petersburg for their production of Wagner's Ring Cycle.

The company - under the artistic direction of Valery Gergiev - performs all four operas in Das ring des Nibelungen on consecutive evenings at the Royal Opera House in London this week. In this latest staging of the production (first seen complete in 2003) projection has been added as a key visual element.

UK - i-Pix supplied a special package of BB4, BB7 and BB16 LED fixtures to Electric Fly Productions, show and lighting designers for the main stage, four arenas and two outdoor terrace areas at the 2009 Global Gathering dance event. This was staged at Long Marsden Airfield in Staffordshire, UK.

Electric Fly's Nick Jevons wanted to use specific fixtures for certain special effects. "I approached i-Pix because I could think of several areas that were ideal for their very high quality homogenised light output - which doesn't even resemble an LED fixture - and they came to the party with great enthusiasm," he says.

i-Pix Chris Ewington adds: " Nick is one of the most innovative lighting designers and his work is always interesting. Our products have all been developed after careful and considered end-user feedback, so events like this present great opportunit
