Italy - The Università degli Studi di Torino (University of Torino) is one of Italy's leading public Universities with an international reputation for high quality teaching and research. With its 13 Faculties, 55 Departments and approximately 70,000 students, it is one of the largest in Italy.

Although the Rettorato (Chancellor's Building) at the Palazzo dell'Università - which houses the entire administration - occupies an architecturally-magnificent building with a historic quadrangle that dates back to the mid-1700's, the University was originally founded in 1404 by Pope Benedetto XIII, making it among the few of European Universities to boast a medieval origin.

Recently the Rettorato's aula magna - the great hall, and main assembly room for the University - underwent a complete audio-visual fit-out.

UK - Manchester-based DBN Lighting has completed the design, supply and installation of lighting for the new Da Vinci - the Genius exhibition at the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester.

DBN was working for Grande Exhibitions from Melbourne Australia and also for MOSI, and the project was designed and managed for them by Nigel Walker. The Da Vinci Exhibition occupies most of the top floor of The 1830 Warehouse, a Grade 1 Listed timber frame building, originally completed in 1830 as the Manchester terminus of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway.

Da Vinci - The Genius features four rooms, some sub-divided and a small theatre space that the DBN team created with rigging and drapes, plus a separate area devoted solely to the Mona Lisa.

The major challenge was in rigging all the equipment without actually attaching anything directly to the building's superstruc

UK - Fibre Optic Systems (FOS) have joined forces with Cheshire-based VME to provide the ever important lighting element to an installation at Altrincham's newest bar, Heart and Soul. The project went so well, the two companies have decided to embark on future sound and light projects together.

FOS supplied DIVAflex LED - RGB colour-changing flexible LED - which was installed by VME to run sound-to-light. DIVAflex also provides a strobing function which the bar uses as the atmosphere heats up later in the evening.

The lighting element, which highlights and accents the bar and seating areas to provide the elegant main lighting scheme, joined an initial sound-only installation completed by VME. This featured Kling & Freitag SONA5 compact installation speakers around the seating areas, coupled with Kling & Freitag SW112 compact sub woofers.

The Netherlands - The De Doelen in Rotterdam underwent a major refurbishment this year. De Doelen was last reconstructed after the end of Second World War as part of the rebuild of this Dutch city and incorporates four individual concert halls that also double as a congress venue making it the largest of its kind in the Netherlands. The lighting design for the 2009 refurbishment was undertaken by the design team at ARUP headed by Rogier van der Heide. In particular the Grote Zaal's (Large Hall) renovation included a new lighting rig and control system.

VisualDMX software lighting control from Visual Productions has been selected for controlling the house lights, stage lighting and LED fixtures throughout the Grote Zaal. The project manager for this renovation was Harm Ruitenbeek, overseeing a wide array of important issues that the control solution was required to resolve. Key t

UK - The organisers of EvenTech Scotland exhibition, which was due to take place on 10-11 February 2010 in Glasgow, have announced that the event has been postponed.

A statement issued by Scattered Media blamed the "current economic climate and the strain this is having on many companies' budgets at present" and said that they were "in the process of looking at the calender to find suitable dates later in the year".

USA - The Baby Grand is the smaller of two venues at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware. The historic Grand first opened in 1871 and the Baby Grand debuted next to the Grand in September 2000. The Downtown Wilmington location where it now stands had once been occupied by the Aldine Theatre.

The 300-seat Baby Grand is an intimate venue, which hosts a variety of different performances and features many small independent musical acts. Its stage stretches 56ft, and has a proscenium arch opening that measures approximately 36ft wide by 17ft high. The Baby Grand and The Grand combine to draw approximately 100,000 people to their shows each year.

The Baby Grand's configuration made the installation team's job challenging. Howard Fulton, audio engineer for the Grand Opera House, explained that horizontal coverage was difficult because the Baby Grand's seating area is wider

Italy - The Magna Lecture Theatre in the Roma Tre University, Rome, is a modern, elegantly-styled venue. Located in the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy, it hosts important lectures and conferences. The only problem it had was sound coverage, which can often be a challenge when fine architecture and acoustics come together. The solution was to completely change the sound system for a new innovative system designed specifically to meet this challenge.

The new sound system is based around Bosch's Hemi-directional Loudspeaker. Embodying an innovative acoustic design using 14 specially positioned speaker drivers combined with advanced filtering, it provides a large opening angle for the whole frequency range. The result is consistent, high-quality sound reproduction over the whole coverage area.

The new installation resolved the innumerable coverage problems that plagued the p

UK - The new self-powered Meyer Sound ultra-compact UP-4XP loudspeaker recently made its debut at the Royal Albert Hall's renovated Elgar Room. With its peak SPL of 121 dB at one meter, the UP-4XP has helped transform the Elgar Room into an intimate and atmospheric venue in which to appreciate live events and discover new artists, from late night gigs to after-show parties, comedy nights, cabaret and theatre performances.

As part of a £1 million makeover, Sound By Design created a sound reinforcement system of four UP-4XP and four UPJ-1P loudspeakers for the diverse activities at the 350-capacity Elgar Room, with equipment supplied by Amber Sound. "Our brief from the Royal Albert Hall was to create a flexible new performance space that would sound great," says Griff Hewis of Sound By Design. "The UP-4XP fit perfectly for what I needed for the bar area, and a

USA - In an upgrade, Baker Audio recently selected JBL VLA and PD series loudspeakers for the new audio system at Bobby Dodd Stadium, home to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets' football team.

Renovations to the Boddy Dodd Stadium audio/visual system began two years ago with the upgrade of the Stadium's 10-year-old video setup. Although most of the budget focused on the video system, Baker Audio was still charged with providing an audio system that could mirror the new scoreboard's quality. The company developed a JBL solution that included two arrays of four VLA601H and two VLA601 line array loudspeakers in the stadium scoreboard on either side of the video board.

The VLA series loudspeaker arrays cover approximately 80 percent of the stadium. There are four PD5212 boxes for down-fill in front of a Panasonic video board in the south end zone, and four PD764 loudspeakers used for

UK - SSE Sales has recently completed a major audio and lighting installation, bringing Nexo's compact Geo S8 line array system to a former North London church for the Nigerian-based Christian charity, House on the Rock.

The old building at St George's Church, in Tufnell Park, has been renamed Rock Tower and has reopened as a place of worship. The building, which operated as a theatre and a community space in recent years, has been fully refurbished with a new extension, a cafe with free Internet access for the community, a youth centre and a day care facility for under-fives.

The charity approached SSE over two years ago at the earliest stages of the renovation. SSE was commissioned to install a complete audio and lighting installation for the church auditorium and adjacent spaces.

The audio design for the main auditorium was a challenge because the local Council had set de

UK - Initially supplying the cruise ship, Saga Ruby, with lighting equipment to Richard Horley Lighting's specification during its £17million refit in 2005, Point Source Productions' maintenance department has been involved in a concerted maintenance and repair programme during 2009.

Focusing on two areas, the large Main Ballroom and the more intimate View Bar and Restaurant, the Point Source Productions team carried out necessary ad hoc repairs to the venues' lighting and control equipment whilst the ship was taking passengers on board at Southampton. The team's organisation and sympathetic approach ensured they completed the work without affecting the smooth workings of the ship. This was followed by a complete service of lighting equipment in both venues and the installation of architectural systems in the shop and Lido Restaurant when the Saga Ruby went into dry dock i

Switzerland - Headquartered in Lausanne, The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) is the governing body with global responsibility for all forms of volleyball. With 220 member National Federations, operating via five confederations based in Africa, Asia, Europe, North & Central America and South America, it is currently one of the largest sports organisations in the world.

The new main meeting room at the Lausanne headquarters features a Bosch Digital Congress Network (DCN) Next Generation flush-mount installation. The flush-mount system was considered particularly attractive for this application as it enables tailor-made fixed installations to be built into the furniture.

The meeting room's elegant wooden conference table features a centre that rises up to give delegates access to the microphones and voting units. And the channel selector units are installed in the edge

Hungary - Only 60 km from Vienna, southwest of Lake Neusiedler, lies the Hungarian city of Sopron. Sopron (Ödenburg in German) is not only a university town but also the home of HK Audio's Hungarian distributor IFK.

Recently when the Petõfi Theater of Sopron was looking for a new sound system, they asked various vendors to conduct a system demo. Naturally IFK was among the bidders. IFK won with the HK Audio Cadis System they proposed.

The Petõfi Theater, with a rich tradition going back two centuries and its Vienna Secession style, is located in the middle of the Old City of Sopros and holds an audience of about 550. The programme ranges from classical and modern drama to comedy and musicals. The new system is made up of six HK Audio Cadis CAD 208 cabs as the centre cluster, two ConTour Series CT 112 12"/1.4" mid/high units and CT 118 Subs on both the left and the

UK - Entertainment retailer HMV is expanding its presence in the live music market by buying venue owner MAMA Group for £46m. HMV's move comes nearly a year after it took a 9.9% stake in MAMA, which runs 11 concert venues including the Hammersmith Apollo. MAMA also owns other interests, including an artist management business which represents bands such as Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs.

Since January, HMV and MAMA have been partners in their Mean Fiddler joint venture, which runs venues in London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

HMV chief executive Simon Fox said: "Our joint venture has worked well since its formation and the full combination of HMV and MAMA will enable us to accelerate our growth into live music.

HMV's takeover offer for MAMA, which is still subject to approval from shareholders, comes after the group rejected earlier bids from Luxemb

UK - St Anne's Church on Alderney in the Channel Islands has long been central to island life, both as a church and more recently as a venue for concerts and events. Often referred to as the 'Cathedral of the Channel Islands' because of its size and grandeur, it has a capacity for a congregation or audience of up to 650 people, and makes the perfect setting for visiting choirs and bands.

With the church actively encouraging appropriate use of the church for outside events, a high quality sound system is imperative, but over the years it became increasingly difficult to hear and enjoy both the spoken word and recorded or live music over a system that was installed more than 25 years ago. When a bequest from a local island resident made money available for 'a project that would benefit both the church and the congregation', the sound system was top priority.

UK - When Wendy and Jonathan Joseph were running Mama Stone's live music venue in its former location, they contacted Tad Barker at Tickle Music in London to provide a rental studio to a standard that would enable Wendy's daughter - the singer Joss Stone - to record an album.

But Mama Stone's duly became a victim of its own success. When the club's popularity outgrew its location in Wellington, and the council started to receive noise complaints from neighbours, the Josephs sought to upgrade the operation, moving to larger premises in the centre of Exeter.

This time they approached Tickle Music for a fully-installed public address system, including a Soundcraft Si2 digital desk. Once again the technical infrastructure needed to be equal to Joss Stone's performance criteria, since she would be opening the new venue.

Wendy and Jonathan Joseph spent in excess of £500,000

USA - The Union Ballroom is a social hub at Duquesne University, a private, coeducational university founded in 1878 and located on a bluff above Pittsburgh's downtown. The room's split-ceiling design has in the past presented a challenge for any PA system in that space, but especially for the older, nondescript speakers that had served the room for years.

A solution was reached with the installation of two AX366 Arrayable Install Loudspeakers from EAW. When the units were installed in November 2009 as part of an overall renovation of the system, the room's sound improved dramatically. The installation was specified and installed by McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania-based Hollowood Music and Sound, which specializes in design, installation, and service of multimedia and sound systems.

"The large concentric horn design of EAW's AX366 disperses the sound evenly throughout the room

USA - The newly-renovated Victory Brew Pub in Downingtown, Pennsylvania includes two main dining areas and a conference room adjoining the large bar area and a Community Professional based sound system.

The brewery owners had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted - a sound system that delivered good sound and even coverage across the entire venue. The bar area is very open, with plenty of background noise and there are some areas with high ceilings and lots of reflective surfaces, while others with carpeting and finished ceilings.

A distributed system based on 24 Community VERIS6 full-range, two-way loudspeakers provide even coverage and hi-fidelity sound for both music and voice. The conference room and arcade areas, all of which have a more finished, dropped ceiling look, are served by Cloud6 ceiling speakers.

UK - Hawthorn has recently completed the Phase 2 refurbishment and technical fit out of The Crucible in Sheffield.

As The Crucible was awarded Grade II listed status by English Heritage as a building of architectural and historic importance in 2008, Hawthorn's in-house installation team had to ensure that the fittings used were not only in keeping with the period of the theatre, but also state of the art and energy efficient at the same time.

Phase 1 of the project was completed prior to the 2009 World Snooker Championship with Phase 2 commencing immediately after the championship and completion by December 2009.

Undertaking the installation of new dimmers and technical infrastructure to the Studio Theatre and the expansion of the paging system, Hawthorn's installation team, working closely with Theatreplan Consultants, undertook a 12-week installation programme compl

UK / UAE - SES Entertainment Services, based near London, has appointed the newly formed RFW Trading LLC as its sole UAE distributor for its extensive range of power distribution products.

RFW, owned and managed by Fragille Wade, formerly of Dubai-based Protec, has tied up with SES to sell its products to an already extensive client base in the region.

Fragille Wade commented: "Having worked with SES's products for many years, I was pleased to be able to represent them in the region and supply a market that has an insatiable appetite for quality distribution equipment. There has been a significant gap in the market here for some time which we hope to be able to fill with a wide range of Power Products which we will hold in stock at our new warehouse in Dubai. We will be adding to our product range over the coming months and will be a one stop shop for the production and e

UK - G-LEC Phantom30 frames have been used for an interactive art exhibition at the National Railway Museum in York. For the installation, media artists KMA formed a bridge-like structure across the roof of the exhibition space using 13 2m x 2m screens, each of which comprised four G-LEC Phantom30 frames.

Artist Tom Wexler explains: "It was the railways which first created the need for standardised time across the country, so we came up the idea of an exhibition based on time, place and distance. We placed the 13 screens across the curved roof of the hall, with a thermal imaging camera at each end. The cameras captured people's movement and a few seconds of each person was looped. This was then shown on each screen in turn until the two people's images met in the middle.

"We specified the G-LEC transparent frames because we didn't want the screens to be too 'heavy' o
