USA - Recent weeks have seen a ground-swell of opinion among LED lighting manufacturers following the granting of US patent 6,788,011 to Boston-based manufacturer, Color Kinetics. The patent appears to give Color Kinetics ownership in the US market of any control of two or more colour-changing LEDs for illumination purposes - something which has caused great concern among lighting professionals.

In a meeting organized by Super Vision International and Artistic Licence (UK) Ltd in October, over 30 lighting manufacturers pledged their support to this group, which calls itself 'The LED Alliance' and is calling upon all interested parties to submit any related prior art on the subject of colour mixing. Specifically, the call is for prior art information dating prior to August 1997 on the following applications:

1. Utilization of Pulse Width Modulation with LEDs; 2. Utilization of LEDs in colour changing lighting fixtures; 3. Utilization of DMX or any other control system in conjunction with LED lighting fixtures; 4. All applications of LED lighting systems utilizing standard Edison screw-in base; 5. All applications of LED lighting systems to light everything from cars to computers.

In addition, the Alliance is also looking for all applications of LEDs for white light applications dating prior to 2002, including: 1. Utilization of dimming applications of white LEDS; 2. Utilization of Red or Amber LEDs in conjunction with white to warm up white light colour temperature; 3. Utilization of Blue LEDs in conjunction with white to create a colder, higher Kelvin, colour temperature; 4. Utilization of white light LED fixtures with DMX or any other control system.

The LED Alliance points out that the deadline for contributions is 20 December 2004, and is asking for photos, documentation, published papers, lab notes, trade show records, sales invoices, samples, trade journal articles and advertisements to be sent to: Brett Kingstone, c/o Super Vision International Inc, 8210 Presidents Drive, Orlando, Florida 32819, USA.

An interview with Color Kinetics appears in the November issue of Lighting&Sound International magazine.
