Powersoft's cartoon band The Mosfets in action
Italy - A new international supergroup has been launched by Italian amplification specialists Powersoft. With all the swagger of Damon Albarn's cartoon group Gorilliaz, The Mosfets have invented their own universe, and will be central to a new marketing campaign being mounted by the electronics manufacturers.

Follow the activities of these allegorical amplification figures, with soubriquets like Roger Woofer, Jeff Porchetta, Lane RA and 'The Wedge' (each a nod to a famous musician or system) as this mythical rock band hits the media, says Powersoft.

"The idea of The Mosfets is to illustrate just how 'active' powered loudspeakers have become," says Powersoft marketing and communications manager Francesco Fanicchi, who is also the creative mind behind the campaign.

So just how did the band derive its name? A phenomenon of the late 1970s, the MOSFET (which stands for Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) was designed to handle significant power levels and is the core of switching mode technology, the basis of Class D amplifiers.

Luca Giorgi, Powersoft Pro Audio Business Unit Manager goes further: "Since Powersoft is the first company to have manufactured Class D amplifiers in such a way that they are both operationally perfect and stable for high levels of power, we wanted to proudly highlight the technology which we helped to pioneer, by assigning a rock band to our power amplifier modules."

The company is a fervent believer in active speakers and it was one of the first to develop purpose-designed professional amplifier modules that could be integrated into the speakers. These offer exceptional 'high power density' and can be used in a wide range of applications. In addition to powered loudspeakers, this includes amplified mono/stereo mixers, active studio monitor speakers and modular mono/stereo amplifiers.

"The Amp Modules Campaign is really original in terms of what the pro audio industry is used to seeing," Fanicchi continues. "It's a new way of communicating something deeply technical in both an enjoyable and educational way."

A new 'episode' will be released every month, and at the end of the video the user can interact by answering questions about Powersoft's amplifier modules and their correct application. The aim of the campaign is to engage users and allow them to learn about the amp modules with information that - even if not relevant to loudspeakers constructors - will open the door to other consumers and markets.

The Mosfets are each represented as follows - for instance in recent stories users have had the chance to discover more about specific amp modules:

DigiMod 2004PFC2 - Featuring a new power supply design and integrating 4 output channels, the DigiMod 2004PFC24 represents the new generation in amp modules technology, and is the ultimate solution for high power multi-way applications.

DigiMod IS Series: A true plug 'n' play solution for active loudspeakers, these are easy to fit in a number of different configurations, from subwoofers to typical 2-way applications, such as wedges, line arrays, studio monitors or satellites.

DSP-4: DSP-4 is a 1-in / 4-out processing board ideal for any application with high processing and digital audio networking requirements. It represents the perfect 'brain' for top-level multi-way systems and line arrays where complete control and premium performances are required.

IpalMod: A new standard for low frequency applications, IpalMod implements, together with specifically designed transducers, a full boundary-conditions technology that dramatically raises the overall efficiency of the amplifier-loudspeaker system.

"Stay tuned in, as these bad boys will be coming to a venue near you soon - complete with all their stage antics," concludes Powersoft.
