UK - HRH Queen Elizabeth II has formally opened The Capitol, the community arts centre in the Sussex town of Horsham, which has been extensively redesigned and refurbished, with Martin Audio cinema and theatre sound systems installed throughout.

Sound Associates provided an integrated design approach to the new audio and projection systems, including projection equipment, theatre PA, cinema sound, a combined PA/VA system and general communications. The building had been substantially reconfigured, its new layout featuring a small studio cinema, a larger 160-seat cinema, and the main 450-seat auditorium which is set up for dual use as a theatre and cinema.

For all three cinemas, Sound Associates chose Martin Audio's Screen Series of loudspeakers. "Martin has been making great inroads into the cinema sound market in the last couple of years," explains Graham Lodge of Sound Associates. "They've come up with highly competitive, quality products that match or exceed the usual benchmarks in specific areas, and they offer excellent customer support across the entire range."

In the main auditorium, Martin Audio Screen 4 three-way cinema systems were installed L, C and R behind a drop-down screen, with 14 Martin Effect 3s used for surrounds. Smaller products from the Screen Series were used for the other two screening theatres, and each room was equipped with a Sub1A sub-bass cabinet. In the main auditorium, the function of the cinema sub was combined with the theatre PA, using two WS2A sub-bass cabinetsThe Martin Audio support team completed an EASE design for Sound Associates' installation in the theatre, using four WT3s per side of the stage. These are mostly used in full-range mode, but two WS2A subs have been provided, which can be wheeled onto the stage when required. An XTA controller automates the settings for both configurations.

"The WT3s have been designed specifically for the theatre market," says Graham Lodge. "They are very compact for a three-way 15" speaker, and they've got useful insert points which allow precise mounting and positioning. Also they offer very good vocal intelligibility, thanks to the 6.5" mid range, which is vital in a hall which will handle a tribute band one night, and the local amateur dramatics group the next."

The Capitol is indicative of Sound Associates' new integrated approach to the theatrical and arts venue market. "In our experience, many of our customers have not always been offered the best overall package because the more traditional sound system providers lack the specialist knowledge and experience in visual and projection systems," says Graham Lodge. "We are hoping that our specialist skills in audio-visual and projection systems will allow us to better advise the customer on an integrated approach to their requirements. This is particularly relevant at this time with many venues finding it increasingly important to be in a position to attract a more diverse customer base with a broad spectrum of facilities and performances."
