Olympic Countdown - Sir Paul McCartney has confirmed he will end the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games on 27 July. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live he said "I've been booked," and added that he would be "closing the opening". A total cast of 15,000 will take part in the Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies, to be watched by an estimated four billion people worldwide. The full line-up of the opening ceremony is yet to be announced. The opening ceremony is intended as a celebration showcasing the best of the host nation.

A performance by the former Beatle has long been rumoured, and in January he disclosed he was in talks about taking part. Sir Paul wrapped up the proceedings of Monday's star studded concert to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee , with a bass guitar specially made for the occasion.

Peace Plea - Madonna has kicked off her MDNA world tour in Tel Aviv, Israel, wishing peace in the Middle East. The two-hour concert at Ramat Gan Stadium saw the pop star perform tracks from her latest album, as well as some of her other hit songs. Midway through the show, she told the 30,000-strong crowd: "If there is peace in the Middle East, there can be peace in the whole world.

"I chose to start my world tour in Israel for a very specific and important reason. As you know, the Middle East and all the conflicts that have been occurring here for thousands of years - they have to stop." The tour will run until December and take in more than 65 cities worldwide.

Jubilee Note - The Beatles have been declared the biggest selling singles act under the Queen's 60-year reign. The group, who split more than 40 years ago, had 17 number ones during their eight-year chart domination. They held off artists such as runner-up Elvis Presley, Sir Cliff Richard and Madonna.

Hair On - The cast of a planned touring production of Hair, which was cancelled after its producers went bankrupt, will perform the musical for one night only in July. It is being performed to raise money for Help For Heroes. The tour - which was meant to star Gareth Gates and open in April - was pulled after its producers, EJB Entertainment, filed for bankruptcy. However, Gary Lloyd, who was due to direct the tour, has now announced plans to stage the show for one night at the Piccadilly Theatre on 1 July 1, to raise money for charity and "to give the cast the opportunity to do it after what happened," he told The Stage.
